Chapter 2

Subaru woke up in the morning with tears in his eyes.

"Another dream about mom and dad…. They've been at the forefront of my mind ever since the trial…. I miss them…."

Beatrice it seems hadn't woken up yet. With all the traveling going on he didn't want to disturb the little amounts of peaceful sleep she was getting so he didn't wake her up. The carriage was currently being guided by the minister of internal affairs of the Emilia camp, Otto Suwen who was sitting next to a napping Garfiel in front of the carriage. Inside the carriage itself was Subaru, the sleeping spirit Beatrice and the candidate for the throne herself, Emilia.

"I wonder what mom would think of them….. What would they think of me….." As much as Subaru hated to admit it, these questions came to his mind quite often. As much as he wished to believe that his parents would be proud of him, the lack of confirmation always haunts him.

"I suppose nothing can be done about it anymore huh…. Can't get too depressed about it me! You already made your peace with it!"

Trying to take himself out of that downward spiral, Subaru goes up to the front to make fun of Otto, his favorite pastime. However, he didn't seem to notice the worried look a certain half-elf was giving him as he got up to go.

"Why won't you tell me what's making you sad Subaru…"

Meanwhile, back in the capital Natsuki Kenichi and Natsuki Naoko had also just woken up, the first peaceful, nightmare-less night they'd had in a while. Why you ask? Because they knew for a fact that Subaru was alive. Subaru was ok. And more importantly, they're going to see him in two days. Today they set out and with two days of travel they should reach the place Subaru currently lives in.

Wilhelm had once again gone out of his way to help them by submitting a request for a carriage. He had initially wanted to escort them on his own, but his duties as a butler didn't allow him, much to his dismay. The request had soon been accepted and the time of departure was soon after breakfast so Wilhelm made sure that his guests slept a tad early so as to not miss it.

Ferris offered to take them to the dragon carriage, which was a bit at the outskirts of the city. The couple greatly thanked Crusch and Wilhelm on their departure, making sure to thank them for every little thing. While they both initially wanted to deflect the gratitude and say that it was only natural that they help a friend's parents, they quickly accepted it when seeing the sincerity in the couple's eyes.

On reaching the stable of dragons and their carriages Naoko and Kenichi were once again hit with the realization that they had indeed been transported to a fantasy world where dragons and cat-boys in girls clothes were common, perhaps not the last one, but they had yet to see a cat-boy in male clothing so they didn't know better.

"Thank you Ferris-kun, we'll be sure to give all your regards to Subaru when we see him," Naoko truly felt happy that Subaru had made such great friends, he truly was living his best life (AN: lol no he isn't). It made her question whether Subaru even wanted to see them anymore. She was about to speak out about her worries when suddenly she heard some shouting.

"I told you not to come, you stupid knight!" The voice was that of a small blonde girl in fancy clothes that she was clearly uncomfortable in.

"As your knight, it is my duty to accompany you whenever you go for such diplomatic meetings, my lady." The one who replied was a handsome young redhead, wearing the same clothes as Ferris, a white coat and pants with a black shirt underneath, the clothes of a knight.

"Nyi he he, seems Reinhard still hasn't exactly gotten Felt-sama used to this nya," Ferris chuckled as if this wasn't the first time he had seen these two argue. Suddenly Ferris' face lit up.

"Oi Reihard! Over here nya!" Ferris calls out, catching the attention of both the girl and the redhead.

Ferris' call caught the attention of both the redhead and the blonde. Reinhard smiled and walked over to them with a smile, an angry Felt in tow.

"Hello Ferris, it looks like you have guests today," he says looking at the Natsuki couple. "Hello, I am Reinhard van Astrea, humble knight of my lady Felt, whom I believe will take the throne," Reinhard introduces himself with a small bow and indicates to Felt.

"Hah? Why do I have to introduce myself when you already did that for me!" Felt is the type to easily get worked up but she quickly calms herself.

"Ok then, I'm Felt from the boonies and I'm going to become Queen! Just watch me." Felt declares confidently with a smug smile.

"Since this is the first time I'm myeeting Felt-sama I'll also introduce myself. I'm Ferris Argyle, the knight of your competitor Crusch Karsten," Ferris also bows and then indicates for Kenichi and Naoko to do the same.

Caught a little out of their depth Kenichi and Naoko fumbled through their own introductions and bowed awkwardly. It was clear they weren't used to this. However, Reinhard's deduction saved them.

"When you say 'Natsuki' you don't happen to mean the same 'Natsuki' as 'Natsuki Subaru' do you?" asks Reinhard, the surprise on his face plain to see.

"Ah, yes, Reinhard-kun, Subaru would be our son," Kenichi says nervously, hoping there weren't any more stories of Subaru acting rashly and getting into big fights.

"You're big bro's parents!" Felt excitedly shouts, clearly happy with the news. "When big bro saved me I really didn't have anything to give him, but now I'm rich! Sounds so nice, rich," Felt turns to Reinhard. "Do we have anything precious right now? Anything we can give as thanks?" Felt truly wanted to gift something to Subaru's parents, so it only hurt when Reinhard had to say that they had nothing of value at the moment.

"We may have nothing to give but…. If you wouldn't mind we could give you a ride to Costul, the nearest settlement to the Miload Mansion. It's only a little out of the way so it wouldn't matter to us." Reinhard quickly comes up with a solution. If they can't give anything, they must simply find another way to be helpful.

"Oh no, we couldn't impose on your travel like that, you mentioned an important meeting to get to, we don't want to be the cause of your delay," Naoko hurriedly rejects the offer. From the moment they had arrived in Lugnica, the only things they'd heard about Subaru were positive, other than that single mistake he made during the ceremony for the Royal Selection. Naoko and Kenichi were starting to worry that maybe, the Subaru who left home that day wasn't the Subaru who had become a hero in this world.

"Nonsense! Those stuck-up nobles can wait! Clearly, both of you are the priority here, and besides," Felt shoots Reinhard a mean glare as she continues. "I'm sure this shitty knight planned this trip so that we got there early anyway, so if anything you're both doing me a favor by delaying my arrival to the meeting."

"Nya~ I'd take their offer, there's no better security than having the strongest man in the world be your escort nya," Ferris joins in and finally persuades them to accompany Felt and Reinhard.

And so, Natsuki Kenichi and Natsuki Naoko were being escorted to Costul by none other than the Sword Saint and yet another candidate for the throne.
