Stepping through the doors that led into the Five 0 offices as they slid open, Steve smiled, he had finally come home where he belonged. He had thought it was his father that brought him back to Hawaii eleven years before and had kept him here, that his father's murder and the subsequent discovery of long hidden family secrets were the reasons why he had stayed, but he was wrong. He believed that he had wanted to find peace, to start again …with Catherine… but he was also wrong about that, just like before, one morning without any warning, Catherine had tearfully left him behind again, unable to ignore the pull of returning to active duty. But this time there was no pain from Catherine leaving again, only a strange relief as he realized that everything he was searching for and wanted was here in Hawaii all along, his life, his home, Five 0, his ohana and … Danny.
Danny!
It was the broken and hurt look on Danny's face that day he had said goodbye that had haunted his dreams and invaded his thoughts, day and night, since that day a year before when he had turned and walked away after saying his last goodbye. He had tried hard to move on, to start his new life with Catherine, to try and find what he was searching for, but deep in his heart as hard as he tried to ignore it, he knew he had left behind the very thing he had been searching for when he left Danny sitting alone on the beach the day he left.
A grin broke out on his face as he headed towards Danny's office, only to fade as he saw the empty cubicle and the bare desk.
"Steve!" He spun around as he heard Lou's surprised voice ring out behind him as the larger man hurried across and shook his hand, hard, asking, "What are you doing here? I thought you were still somewhere on the mainland!"
He smiled, "I was but I'm back."
"Back? Back as back here for a visit or back as back here for good?"
"Back as for good. The governor offered me my old position back with Five 0, but I wanted to talk to Danny about it first. " Steve reassured him as he looked around again.
"Steve-" Lou began only to be cut off by McGarrett.
Looking back at Lou, Steve frowned, "Where is Danny? I went to his house when I got back but the house is empty, and his phone keeps going to voicemail."
"Steve!" Lou tried again, this time managing to get McGarrett's full attention as he said softly. "Danny's gone."
"Gone?" Steve frowned in confusion, "Gone where?"
"I'm not sure, Steve, I'm not sure Danny even knew where he was going." Lou sighed as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a tattered, folded piece of paper. "But after you left and then you didn't call, well Danny -" He paused a moment as he handed the letter to McGarrett before he said softly. "I…Um…I think this will answer all your questions." His heart ached for both the two men whom he considered his closest friends as he watched McGarrett unfold the letter Danny had left on his desk just a month before. Lou watched Steve's face lose all its color as he read the letter, his guilt and regret evident on his face.
Swallowing hard, Steve crushed the letter into a tight ball, shoving it back into Lou's hand before he turned and ran towards the glass sliding doors.
"Hey Steve, where are you going?" He heard Lou call as the doors slid open.
"To find Danny." He called back over his shoulder as he darted through the doors and headed down the corridor towards the ornate Koa staircase as he added softly, "And bring him home, where he belongs, with me!"
