Chapter 3

A week had passed since Little Skyler had started school and met the other children. She loved to meet every single one of them and to finally be able to talk to c

children her own age. Besides, it was very helpful that the other children also had a gift, because this meant that they understood what the other went through and could help each other out. Plus there were also other artistic students and they could inspire each other and spark creativity in one another.

In a little while Skyler had gotten very close with Connor, because it felt like they really completed each other. They shared the same interests and she immediately felt safe and at ease with him. They spent afternoons learning how to walk and trying to discover their ability, but they also played games with each other, because they were toddlers after all.

A few months later, eight to be exact, Skyler had just turned six and was excelling in school; she was practically fluent in German, French, Spanish and Greek and able to multiply with four numbers. Walking, which had been pretty difficult at first, was much easier and she did it more and more often. Skyler was already really turning into a little girl, she dressed by herself each day and prepared her own food. Her art would be on display soon and she had made quite the portfolio for when the exhibition would be taking place.

Today, after eight months of training, Skyler was finally ready to discover her ability, because a gift always manifested itself on a child's sixth birthday. After today things would no longer be the same, because her ability would change every aspect of her life.

Just like every other day Skyler went to school. Today she decided to run, because it was a sunny day and the school bus was running a little late. She was looking forward to seeing Connor today, because he'd turned six today as well. This of course meant that he would receive his ability too and they both wondered what the other would get and if it would complement each other. After Skyler had ordered their two hot chocolates, he walked in. He looked a little flushed, because he had rode his new bike to school. Both kids had quite the workout on their way to school.

In the last eight months, it had become apparent that Skyler didn't only age a lot faster, she also got a lot more mature and her brain was already much further developed than the brains of her parents. All of this was because, when she was born from the heavenly fire, her body had sucked up a little bit of the energy of the flame. This made her smarter, it age faster and mature a lot sooner. Of course her ability would be formed from this little spark as well and be more special and stronger.

It became clear that Connor had the same extra spark of the heavenly fire in him; this was a clear explanation for the fact that they felt connected to and drawn to each other. It was very rare that they found each other so early in their life, but it made them inseparable.

Class was about to start, so they quickly took their seats. By now their chairs had been replaced with comfortable couches and tables. Each little student had his or her own locker and it's own corner of the classroom. Skyler shared a couch with Connor who was her study buddy.

It turned out that they had arrived just in time, because they weren't seated for long when Miss Waverly walked in. 'A special welcome today, for all of our students that have turned six in the last few months; congratulations! Today your abilities will be assigned to you.

It happened just as fast as it did suddenly; the teacher had just finished her sentence when the heavenly fire appeared in front of Skyler and Connor. Hers were bright blue, while Connors's flames were bright orange. The flames turned into two small circles and Miss Waverly ordered them to step into the circles and stay very still while they went through whatever was about to happen.

Something incredible happened after that; they started to glow and their clothes changed into something like a golden training suit with blue or orange symbols on it. Miss Waverly explained that they were witnessing something extraordinary which was caused by the sparks of heavenly fire that had been inside the bodies of both children since the day they were born.

Just like that, the fire disappeared completely and when it did Skyler and Connor looked at each other and smiled. Out of nowhere their entire bodies started to pulse and shake and everyone screamed because they had gotten a very big scare. After their bodies stopped moving Skyler started at a couch and it came towards her; it was soaring through the sky along with every other object in the classroom. 'Very impressive Skyler, you were given the not very common ability of telekinesis and will be able to make every object fly towards you while only using your mind.

Then it started to snow, hale and then rain outside. Meanwhile Connor was staring out of the window while he was focusing all his attention on it. 'Also very rare is Connor; the ability to control the elements. I think it's time for the three of us to have a little talk. Follow me please. As for the rest of you, you guys can continue your language studies, because I think we're going to be gone for quite some time.' Miss Waverly said.

Miss Waverly then took Skyler and Connor to a locked room in the attic with a view of the square below. The room also had four big windows. Miss Waverly asked them to sit down on on the red couches and make themselves comfortable and then she started her tale:

'Four thousand years ago two babies were born, who, just like you two had, an extra spark of the heavenly fire in their bodies, because their bodies sucked it up too. They too were a boy and a girl. Her name was Alexandra en His name was Paul and they were twins. Together they ruled over heaven and were very loved by their people. This until one faithful morning they brutally murdered people that wanted to take over their kingdom and then threatened to destroy it.'

'Only, one of their descendants was a little boy and, along with a little girl, he survived this brutal attack and together they were kept hidden by good people. They fell in love and got three children together and together they built a new kingdom under the ground. They stayed hidden like that for a thousand years until recently a flood hit their safe haven. Everyone perished except for two babies that still had to be born.'

'One of those babies was you Connor and you Skyler were the other. You two are twins and you guys were separated for your own safety and placed in two different families so you would find each other again and be re-united.

Now it has come to pass and both of you know the secret now. Since you two are the last of your race, air (Skyler) and fire (Connor) must be bound together with a wedding on your nineteenth birthday. It might seem weird and strange for brother and sister to be in a relationship, but you two are from a different race and destined to fall in love and become the protectors of the heavenly fire and her energy.

When Miss Waverly had finished her story, the twins started to hold each other close for while. From the moment they first met, they had felt like there was something missing in their hearts and now they were finally whole. They would always have each other, but with that knowledge came big responsibility and the need to keep it a secret.

The twins knew that it was the start of a new adventure, which meant that they could leave everything behind that they had known to move to the 'Institute of Heavenly Fire'. They could see their parents once a month and life in the Institute until they had finished their training. Miss Waverly told them that it was time for them to go home and pack their things, because at four o'clock they would be picked up in a limousine and taken to the Institute.

When they came home, the twins told their four parents separately that they had been selected for a special educational program, like they had been told to say. After that they only had two hours left to pack before the limousine would pick them up. While they were packing their things they shed a tear, until it was four o'clock and their parents helped them to load their things into the moving truck that would drive to the Institute first. This way their rooms could be set up and decorated before they arrived. Then it was time to hug their parents and say goodbye to them. They couldn't see their parents for the next six months, because they would be too busy studying and training. Eventually the twins got into their limousines and they drove quietly away from their family home and their safe environment and no doubt started an adventurous journey together…

Chapter 4

Skyler sighed in frustration as she all but threw herself into the nearest chair. A few hours had passed since she and her twin had arrived at the Institute and they had decided to train a little in advance.

They had been going at it for three hours now and the result was frustratingly lacking. Just when they were about to throw in the towel- throwing the towel is a literal expression here, because Skyler was actually practicing throwing a towel through a metal ring in the ceiling- a woman walked in. She had her hair in a long red braid and she picked up the towel that Skyler had thrown on the floor in her frustration and handed it back to the girl with a smile.

Meanwhile she nodded her approval to Connor who was simultaneously making rain, hail and lightning appear in the sky. A moment later Skyler's towel went flying and right through the middle of the ring. This process was repeated a couple of times and Skyler was jumping in joy, because she had finally been able to get the towel to go through the ring. All her efforts had paid off. 'See Skyler, I knew you could do it!' the woman said to her. 'Good job girl!'

'So it's really true huh? You two are the twins of legend, the last two of your kind; sent to earth for safety, to be reborn when the time was right. I'm very impressed by all the things that you guys have already accomplished at such a young age. You two can hardly imagine how honored I feel by being able to meet you. My whole life and that my family's life have been centered around protecting the heavenly fire and keeping your existence a well kept secret. I'm very very happy that the time has finally come to make you guys the keepers and protectors of the heavenly fire instead. That's the reason for the present I'm about to give you.' The woman continued.

As she was still finishing her last sentence, the woman reached into her left pocket and pulled to gift boxes from it. With shaking hands, both Skyler and Connor took one; a blue one for Skyler and an orange one for Connor. By now their hands were shaking and they ripped the paper open and revealed two silver lockets with small flames flashing through them. At the same time the twins opened the lockets and inside each locket was a picture of their biological parents when they were last seen alive. They got to see their real parents for the first time, even if it was just a picture and this brought tears to their eyes. They then helped each other to put the lockets on.

The lockets were barely attached when they started to glow and give of a subtle amount of warmth. Surprised the twins turned to the woman for an explanation and the woman continued with her story;

These lockets were made especially for you and have been adjusted to your abilities and personal energies. This means that the lockets will strengthen the power of your abilities as long as you are wearing them. They will also protect you against danger and it's your job to protect these lockets and keep them from falling into the wrong hands. The silver that these lockets were made of was forged from the heavenly fire and entwined with the silver were then the last two existing sparks of heavenly fire. It's of the utmost importance that you never take the lockets off. They also keep the memory of your real parents, that is bound to them, alive. Plus the lockets establish a connection if you ever get separated. The spark of heavenly fire also charges your abilities even if they ever get weakened. These lockets are your birthright and mark up the start of your long journey.

When the woman stopped talking she looked at the twins one at a time. Two heads looked in her direction and both kids were determined and looked in their eyes. 'We're ready for this!' they said in unison. 'Okay that's enough talking done for now, it's time to actually do something; it's time for your first training session to start.' the woman said.

She then gave each of them their personal weapon; a beautiful saber with orange symbols for Connor and the same weapon for Skyler but hers had blue symbols. They then stepped into a fighting position and started to fight each other while the woman gave them useful tips. The fight was pretty intense and when they were really on a roll all of the objects in the room were lifted off the ground and while they were flying through the room, flashes of lighting lit it up.]

The twins seemed born to fight, no wonder, it was in their blood after all. Their abilities only helped them to give their sabers blows more power and it made sure that they could fight for a view hours on end. When the fourth hour had passed, Skyler and Connor dropped their weapons and fell down on the floor from exhaustion. Without saying a single word, since they were too tired to speak, they lay there for about half an hour to get some much needed rest. With her last amount of strength, Skyler lifted herself and her brother up into the air and carefully dropped the both of them on the couch. This surprised them, because Skyler wasn't supposed to be able to lift people off the ground yet. She simply hadn't had the time to learn to do so, but now it appeared that her gift was more extraordinary than they had thought at first.

It didn't take long for the twins to fall into a deep, dreamless sleep, while the woman got up quietly, left the room and carefully closed the door behind her.

The next morning the twins woke at the same time and they were well rested. They got out of bed and went in search of a big breakfast to be able to handle another day of training. Both Skyler and Connors's cheeks now had a bit more color, but to their surprise they noticed that the color of their wings had changed. Connors's wings were a bright orange, while Skylers wings had a bright blue color. Both sets of wings were surrounded by little sparks of fire, but luckily they didn't catch on fire. The twins looked at each other's wings in wonder and started to laugh. Right now neither of them had an explanation, but they silently agreed to ask the woman about it later.

When they reached the dining hall, they were met with an enormous table filled with the most tasteful food in large amounts; they saw toast, three different kinds of bread, eggs prepared in four different ways, crispy bacon and four different kinds of juice. At the top of their plates they found two steaming cups of hot chocolate and a big bowl of fruit salad. Skyler and Connor attacked the food like hungry wolves and wiped their mouth on a napkin when they were full. They sighed in content and went upstairs to freshen up.

A short fifteen minutes later the two showed up in the training room, freshly showered and with combed hair. The woman was already waiting and greeted them cheerfully.

'Today I wanna give you guys a little piece of family history, I'd like to ask you to follow me to the study room please,' she said kindly but sternly. She then got up and walked ahead of them, two flights of stairs onto the top floor of the Institute. They passed a tow of doors, until they stopped in front of the last one. With just a flick of her wrist of the woman the door swung open and revealed an absolutely gorgeous room.

They walked in, sat down on chairs with their names on them and the woman began her story: four thousand years ago a kingdom was built, Miss Waverly already told you this, but what she didn't tell you was why. It was because, this was the first time that a blue flame of the heavenly fire hit the clouds and the first child of your kind was born from it. The baby was a boy and shortly after, his twin sister was born as well. Paul and Alexandra didn't have parents, because the flame had conceived them. At the of their birth, the baby's immediately

'Plus they were the first owners of the lockets and sabers that I gave you. After a view of years of descendants, you two were born as the last two descendants of your kind. By this time the kingdom had already fallen into disrepair and gotten lost because of war and a flood. Lost maybe, but not completely destroyed, because the story and the special task to protect the heavenly fire, were temporarily handed to my family. This is only until you return to the Institute; the same place where all the generations of your family were trained, until then your fate and that of the kingdom rested on our shoulders. We bore it with gratitude.'

After the woman had finished her story, she put a photo album on the table. Skyler started to look through it while Connor glanced over her shoulder. The photo album was filled with four thousand year of pictures of all the generations of their family. Piece by piece it showed powerful, firm and brave warriors, who smiled confidently to the camera. There were also pictures of the first twins and the kingdom above and below the ground. Plus they saw pictures of the heavenly fire.

In the back of the album they found a page that contained strange writing and it turned out that the twins could read it. It told the story of their family and the legend that had been told for years that they would guard the heavenly fire. The writing also spoke of their special abilities and the upcoming wedding. The wedding would make sure that the kingdom could be brought to life again. By building a family the race would no longer be threatened with extinction. were two wonder children with a special task; to protect the heavenly flame that had created the both of them.'
