One day earlier
The Young Justice team arrived in Gotham City at midnight, the hour when all evil seems to come to life in the most crime ridden city in the world, and landed the camouflaged bioship atop the roof of a moderately sized skyscraper. Wally took one look at the dark, dismal city and shivered.
"Dude, how can Rob stand living in a place like this?" he grimaced.
"Never mind that," Kaldur stated, "What matters now is that we find him and help him get this city back in order before the League returns."
An explosion resounded a few blocks away, sending out a fiery orange beacon to the team. The teens nodded to each other and raced towards the chaos...and hopefully to their youngest member.
Present Day
"And why should we help you?" Fury demanded, not liking the bold stance the boy wonder had taken before them. The kid was thirteen at most, and he saw himself as equal to the rest of them. This, of course, did not sit well with the ultimate control freak.
Robin sent the man a surprisingly fierce glare. It wavered however, as his side chose that exact moment to flair, and it took every ounce of self-control not to grip it. Fortunately for him, Fury put a hand to his ear, apparently receiving an urgent call. A minute later, he ended it and sent a stern glance in Robin's direction.
"We will talk later," he stated and walked out. A beat of semi-awkward silence passed before they turned their attention to the boy wonder.
"Why don't you sit down and give that injury of yours a break?" Steve offered.
"I'm fine," Robin snapped but was ignored. Instead, Steve and Nat forced him to sit on to the couch. The team decided to introduce themselves as a way to pass the time and distract their new guest.
"I'm Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America."
"Natasha Romanoff. Black Widow."
"Tony Stark, aka Iron Man." Robin raised an eyebrow at that one.
"Bruce Banner, or Hulk, whenever the other guy shows up." Again, visible confusion, but he didn't question it.
"Clint Barton. Hawkeye. You'll meet the rest of us soon enough."
"There are a few others," Steve added, "but they're a bit spread out at the moment."
"Hold on sec," Robin cut in, "So everyone knows your civilian identities?"
"Well, yeah," Tony shrugged. Robin looked torn between confused and mortified.
"What about your families? If the enemy knows your identity, they can go after the ones you care about. How can you trust people like that?"
"Most of us don't have families, kid," Steve answered somberly, "And those that do make sure they're well protected."
Robin didn't say anything to that. He had always been taught to never reveal his identity to anyone, not even his team. Maybe things weren't as dangerous in this world as they were in his own? Still, the idea of the whole world knowing who he was under the mask left an uneasy feeling in his stomach.
"What about you, kid? Do you have a family?" Tony asked randomly. Robin looked away, finding his boots to be a lot more interesting.
"A long time ago," he said lowly, "My mentor is my father now, and my team is my family. I wouldn't ask for better," he added with a small glare, signaling them to drop it. The adults noticed that this was a touchy subject and chose to leave it alone for the time being. A loud boom echoed from outside catching everyone's attention.
"Guess Goldilocks is early," Tony mused aloud with a smirk.
Robin glanced out the glass wall to see a large, well built man in a kneeling position on the large balcony of the building. His hair was shoulder-length and blond. But what caught his eye the most was the ancient armor and long red cape he wore, as well as the small yet bulky hammer in his grip. This was the first person other than himself to wear a cape, and it gave Robin a sense of familiarity. In his world, most of the heroes wore capes or hoods, and it had been surprising to find he was the only one to do so here. His attention was drawn away as the man stood, catching their gazes through the glass and sent a cheerful grin in return.
The group walked outside to join him, Robin following closely, if a little stiffly.
"My friends!" greeted the new arrival with a thick foreign accent, his smile widening further. Pats on the back and brief hugs were exchanged in greeting, until he came to the boy wonder, "And who is this tiny Midguardian?"
It was true. The man practically dwarfed the teen, but then again, Robin had always been the smallest in the group. The jab at his height was nothing new to him. He extended his hand up the man.
"The name's Robin."
The man nodded, the friendly smile never leaving his face as he returned the gesture, "And I am Thor, Son of Odin."
Something clicked in the back of Robin's mind from a history lesson he vaguely remembered, "The Norse god of lightning?"
"The one and the same. Tell me, little robin, when did you join the Avengers?"
Steve stepped in before the teen could answer, "We found him last night after a major energy surge. He's staying with us until we get everything sorted."
Thor nodded in understanding as the team explained the situation and turned his attention back to Robin, "Well then, welcome to Midguard, little robin! Of all the planets I have visited, this one is by far my favorite. You shall enjoy it greatly."
The boy wonder grinned slightly at the hearty welcome. While Thor looked extremely powerful, he had a friendly, almost goofy way about him that made him easy to be around. His bulky build and long red cape also reminded him of Superman, which made it just that much easier for him to relax around Thor.
"Thanks!" he chirped and followed the group back inside the base, all the while listening to Thor as he rambled about his past adventures, both on Earth and Asgard. The other Avengers were surprised that they got along so easily.
"Come on, Robin," Bruce waved once he noticed the teen struggling to hide a grimace, "Let's get you some pain meds for that side."
"Sure, whatever," he replied stiffly. He had put up with worse, but he wasn't about to turn down a gift if he could help it. However, as the two began to leave what Robin considered the living room, Director Fury strode inside, his one good eye making instant contact with Robin's shielded orbs.
"It's time you and I had a talk."
