Rory POV
I felt myself waking up as I became aware of the warm sun beams peeking through the blinds and heating up my face. I kept my eyes closed for a little longer, trying to hold on to my relaxation a bit longer. Being both a mom and a "career woman", restful sleeps like this were very scarce. But deciding it was probably time to face the music I took a deep breath in and reached out for Logan.
Empty.
My eyes shot open and it would seem my desperate arm flailing wasn't deceiving me. Logan wasn't there. This is odd, Logan always sleeps in on Sundays. It's the one day of the week he isn't such a busy bee, even has Laney noticed the pattern overtime and gotten used to sleeping in on Sundays. What could be different about this Sunday?
Mother's Day!
It hit me! Today is Mother's Day! Of course! I bet Logan got Laney up and is planning something. For the last few years Logan has always made Mother's Day special for me.
The first time we celebrated Laney had not yet made her appearance. I was 8 months pregnant with our little June Bug (one of the many nicknames Logan had coined for our girl). It was a beautiful Sunday in May with flowers blooming, nice weather, and smiling families… and I was miserable. If there was any kind of omen for how much of a handful our girl was it was definitely my pregnancy. That girl put me through hell. Constant sickness, terrible aches, sleepless nights, and not to mention how much I grew in size. By that Mother's Day I was absolutely done and ready to have her out and into the world.
Logan knew that, of course Logan knew that. I was a hormonal basket case who blew her lid at the slightest of things. Poor Logan was on the receiving end on many many moody rants, usually including irrational blaming and childish insults. If I remember correctly, the day before that Mother's Day I tried to blame him for our grocery store's wine shortage, when I couldn't even drink. That's the day I brought back the "butt faced miscreant" title he gained from me in college. But he just let it happen and would hold me and kiss me and let me calm down. However, that didn't mean he didn't tease me when I was less hostile.
But that first Mother's Day he was a perfect saint and made me breakfast in bed, rubbed my back, and let me pick any movies I wanted to watch.
With a smile on my face recalling all the Mother's Days since then, I hopped out of bed and put my robe over my pajamas and made my way out of my room.
I first checked Laney's room, and as I suspected she wasn't in there. My suspicions were fully confirmed when I heard a giggle coming from down stairs. My smile growing I walked downstairs to see my little girl shoveling eggs into her mouth babbling as her dad read the newspaper and nodded along. Nothing out of the ordinary… I'm sure they just don't know I am up yet.
"Good morning you two! What are you guys doing up and out of bed so early on a Sunday?" I asked, walking over to the coffee maker. I heard a little giggle escape Lany's lips and as I turned I could've sworn I saw Logan put his finger over his mouth in a "shhh-ing" gesture, but when I was fully looking at them it seemed neither had moved an inch.
"Well Ace, I wouldn't call it 'early,' it's nearly 10:30! Me and Spades over here just wanted to get off our lazy butts!" Logan smiled.
"Spades" was another one of his nicknames, he thought since Rory was "Ace" he needed another card themed name, you know, to stay consistent. "Spades fits her personality Ace! She's spunky and sharp! My Ace and my little Spades, it's perfect!" he had said.
I turned away from the two, chuckling as she reached up to grab a mug. I was gonna need coffee to keep up with her family's shenanigans. Well honestly, I just need coffee all the time. When she pulled out the coffee pot though, it was empty.
"Umm Logan? Where is the coffee?"
"Oh! Sorry I didn't have any this morning and I must of forgot to make some for you. My bad Ace. You can get it though right?" Logan replied as he went back to his paper.
What? No coffee ready? Even on normal days, if Logan doesn't bring coffee to me in bed he makes a pot for me downstairs? And on Mother's Day? And what was this "I didn't have any today" business? Has he gone mad?
I was pulled out of my thoughts by a short giggle.
"What's so funny Laney Loo?" I ask starting the coffee maker and walking over to tickle her sides.
"Nothing Mommy! Nothing! I was just eating!" she managed through the fit of giggles my tickles her sending through her.
"Whatever you say Junebug" I said as I sat by Logan, he smiled obviously reveling in how I've caught on to his nicknames no matter how much I pretended they annoyed me.
Once I was settled into my seat at the table and Laney had calmed down, Logan set down his paper, smiled at me, then grabbed Laney's finished plate.
"Well Spades, let's get a move on it. Ace, there are some eggs in the fridge for you to heat up if you want, I'm gonna take Laney out with me for a bit, bye!" He kissed my cheek and picked up Laney and carried her to the door. I hadn't even noticed they both had shoes on and were seemingly all dressed.
"Love you Momma" I heard Laney squeal and then the sound of the front door closing.
What was that? Surely I missed something? Neither of them made a peep? I'm sure even if Logan had somehow forgotten, Laney had to have talked about it in day care this week? Seriously? I can't believe no one said happy Mother's Day!
She poured her coffee, grabbed a poptart and went to the couch.
She chatted with her mom a bit on the phone, wishing her a happy mother's day, and catching up with all the gossip around stars hollow.
"So what kind of lavish, sickly sweet thing did Logan and that cute Granddaughter of mine do this morning?"
"Mom you'll never believe it!" I said, exasperated, and then explained the events of the morning.
"Sweets, I'm sure they have something planned, and if not I'll come take you and that little blondie of yours, and kick your other blondie straight in the groin."
"I love you Mom"
"Love you too Ror"
When the phone call was over I decided to just rest my eyes. Laney and Logan have been gone for at least an hour now, and if no one is gonna celebrate with me then I am gonna take a nap.
I don't know how long I was out, but I awoke to little hands shaking me awake.
"Momma! Momma! Wake up sleepy head! Have you been sleeping all day?" Laney giggled as I regained awareness of my surroundings.
Just as I thought this morning, restful sleep never lasts.
By the time I am sat up and alert, my little girl has already run upstairs to her playroom. I look around and see Logan settling in next to me and fiddling with the remote.
I smile and cuddle into his side.
"Sooo, what were you and Laney up to today?"
"Oh nothing special I suppose, just some Sunday errands and what not" he replied, placing a kiss on the top of my head.
Is he kidding? Nothing. Not a word. Do I belong in the looney bin or has my husband fully transformed from a loving romantic guy into a total jerk?
Rolling my eyes I stood up and huffed my way to the kitchen. I heard him holler something or another about me being in a weird mood, but I ignored him and got some wine from the fridge.
Sure it was early in the day, but I was fed up. And as our lovely friend Finn would say "Surely it's five o'clock somewhere love!"
I let out a loud sigh hoping it would reach the ears of the people in the house as I downed my glass in one gulp. I stayed there holding my empty glass staring at the wall for who knows how long.
"Why do you look so sad Mommy?"
As I was pulled from my zone out I saw my daughter's blue eyes looking up at me accompanied by the trademark Huntzberger smirk she inherited from her father. I stared into her eyes choosing my next words carefully. I, Lorelai Leigh Gilmore Huntzberger, was at my limit.
"Well Miss Loo if you must know, today is Mother's Day, and I haven't received even a hug or an appreciative smile from you or your father" I sighed "And to be quite honest it's a little hurtful"
I looked at her once again, expecting some sort of apology, or even at least some apologetic look in her eyes. However I was met with with twinkling irises and her grin doubling in size.
"DADDY! DADDY! COME HERE!" She squealed running into the other room. Logan came in, Laney on his hip and smirked. That damn smirk.
"Well Ace you finally cracked. I'm surprised you lasted this long, I was worried I had gone too far too fast with the whole 'no coffee' thing, but here we are at…" he glanced at his watch "4pm and you are just now breaking"
I glared at him. What was he doing? His wife, the mother of his child, just expressed how she was hurt by his actions and he was teasing me? And still no "happy Mother's Day"?
"Don't give me the glare Ace, me and Spades simply wanted to surprise you"
"Yeah Momma! Daddy said not to say anything all day so that our surprise would be extra special! I thought he was crazy!! But it was so funny pretending today, Daddy said we were like spies" Laney giggled.
Though I was trying to keep a tough exterior, I couldn't help but grin and reach out for my girl. Once Logan settled her in my arms I kissed the tip of her nose and looked between her and her daddy.
"So what is this excellent surprise?"
Laney wiggled out of my arms and ran into the other room. She ran back in carrying a large poster of some sort. She held it up and just smiled.
I was speechless. It was a precious collage of pictures of me and my little girl and our family. It was simpler than the gifts Logan usually put together but it was more than I can ever ask for. It was perfect.
"I love you two trouble makers, come here"
I enveloped my family into a huge hug then let Laney explain each picture to me. As she babbled on and on I stole a glance at my husband. He just winked and grinned from ear to ear.
Life really couldn't get better than this.
