Alpha: Next Generation
Prelude - part 2
Jacob Black
"I'm sorry mom. I didn't mean to say that." JJ told Leah. She looked at him with a hard expression at first but she soon softened it.
"You can do better than that." She said. JJ sighed. Did he really think it would be that easy?
"I know you didn't leave us because you wanted to. I know what you and dad sacrificed and I know I shouldn't have kept in the dark about Reggie's pregnancy... I just... I was scared that you would be disappointed."
"Disappointed? You're my son, you'll never disappoint me."
"That's not what Sarah's says," JJ complained. That was the victim card that he knew would make Leah forgive him almost instantly.
"Nice going, mom... stroke his ego more," Sarah said beside Leah. I saw JJ putting his tongue out to his sister while Leah was hugging him. Sarah flipped him the finger.
"You better tell mom and dad the truth since you're such a good son."
"Shut up, Sarah."
"What's your sister talking about?" Leah asked.
"It's nothing." JJ rolled his eyes. "Sarah loves a good drama."
"Were you fired? Again?" I tried. JJ was always between jobs. He seemed to have a lot of talent doing a lot of things but it seemed he also had a huge talent to get fired. Mostly because he couldn't keep his mouth shut. He didn't have William's explosive temper or Sarah's stubbornness but he was close enough.
"No! That's not what happened. It's just that..." My youngest son hesitated. There was something going on for sure.
"Reggie left his sorry ass." Sarah finished her brother's sentence triumphantly.
"What?" Both Leah and I asked. JJ's relationship with Regina Dwyer had been tense from the start with everyone trying to convince JJ that Regina wasn't the right girl for him. Reggie was, like he had mentioned earlier, a free spirit. And she wasn't used to living on an Indian Reservation. She was, after all, a city-kind of girl.
She had come to Forks in search of her older sister, Bella. Before dying, her father, Phil had told her that she should search for her half-sister who had once lived in Forks with her father, Charlie Swan.
So after losing both her parents, Renée had died a couple of years before Phil, she came looking for her lost sister but she ended up finding something better: my son. Bella couldn't meet Regina unless she wanted to explain to a seventeen-year-old girl that she had a vampire for a half-sister so Reggie's sudden interest in JJ was most welcome, for Bella, that is.
She moved in with Sue and Charlie and when Bella's father died last year and Sue came home to La Push, Reggie tagged along. JJ didn't care about our advice and now he was facing the possibility of raising a child on his own.
"She left you with Meadow?" Leah asked completely shocked. "Did she do that?" She turned to our daughter.
"She left JJ with Meadow and JJ left Meadow with me. But I can't keep taking care of her, I've got Joey to think about too." Sarah complained. "He needs attention."
Joey was Sarah's four-year-old son. He was smart and cheerful but unfortunately, he looked a lot like his father.
"Why did she leave?" I asked. "What happened?"
"She's crazy... She accused me of cheating on her and then she said she wanted to go back to her old life and her friends. I think her best friend finally convinced her to leave me."
"And you didn't go after her?" I questioned.
"What for? She said we needed some time apart and that she'd call me when she's ready."
If she's ever ready. I thought to myself. If Regina was anything like her mother, one of her main features was insecurity and hesitation. Renée had always been erratic to the point of suffering from a bipolar condition prior to her death.
Considering all of these elements, there was a high probability that Reggie would never return.
"Meadow is her daughter! How dare she leave you both like that!? Not even Renée was that bad of a mother!"
"Look, let's just not talk about Reggie right now, okay?" JJ begged. "Let's just enjoy the bonfire."
JJ was right. We should change the topic since discussing his private life wouldn't get us anywhere. There were more important things to discuss that evening. I watched as my family and friends started taking up their places around the huge fire. Today Leah and I could be ourselves. We didn't have to hide or lie about our physical appearance.
Three years ago we had made the difficult decision of leaving La Push. Just like our packmates, we wanted to stop phasing and resume our lives, especially now that the situation had stabilized and there were new alphas in charge, but our warrior spirits didn't allow us to quit.
Everyone else had quit long ago, first, it was the White pack, then us. Seth was the last one. He hadn't phased in almost a year now. Leah and I were the only wolves left from the original La Push pack therefore we couldn't stay in the Reservation any longer without raising suspicions.
Tonight the pack that was protecting our second-line perimeter was coming back to be replaced by another one for the next three months.
We had been rotating all four packs for five years now. The area we protected was now much bigger than it was in the past. We used to protect only Forks and La Push, but when Maria's Coven started to enter Oregon we were forced to redefine our borders.
"Jacob." Sam greeted. He approached us with Emily. Instead of staying with his family, Levi stayed on the other side of the fire with his pack mates David, Sean, and Kyu though his eyes were focused on Leah and Sarah.
"Sam." I greeted back. Sam was replacing me in the Council for now. My father had passed away four years ago, the disease had finally won and since I was now living outside the Reservation, I had entrusted Sam with my position.
"Congratulations on your thirteenth grandchild," Sam said.
"Thanks."
"So, how's everything in the south?" He asked.
"We killed two vamps, five days ago. A third one escaped."
"From Maria's Coven?"
"I don't think so. They seemed too civilized. I think they were nomads wandering around. What about here?"
"It's been calm. Sarah's pack has been careful and efficient. We didn't have any incursions for the last three months. Carlisle stopped by with Jasper two weeks ago and he said that two Romanian Elders were spotted in Moldova."
"That's all?"
"Yeah... unfortunately that's all they managed to find out so far."
"And Jane?"
"It's all quiet. No battles in Europe that we know of."
I knew for sure that the Volturi would never stop trying to rescue Sulpicia and Athenodora but without Priya or a decent tracker that would be almost impossible. The Romanians seemed to be one step ahead every time they had a tip to a possible location.
Time seemed to fly whenever we met our friends in these gatherings. We were relaxed and the sense of belonging made us forget that in two or three days we were going back to our small house in Shoalwater Bay.
I heard the Makah pack's arrival before they arrived at the beach. They were running and teasing the two younger members of the pack, Ernest and Landon, who were falling behind. Daniel was the first one to come into view. He was walking barefoot and shirtless, like all the others.
"Jules will kill me if I'm late," Quinn said, coming right behind Daniel.
"You're such a hussy, Gladstone!" Adam grinned. "The perks of not being married."
"You just wait a couple of years and you'll see. Don't think for a minute that Norah will be satisfied with being just your girlfriend." Quinn said.
"Come on guys!" Daniel called back to his pack brothers who were now leaving the tree line. "Goodnight everyone!" Paul stood up to hug his son. "Uncle Jake, Aunt Leah." He greeted bowing down his head acknowledging our superior status. Even though he was a beta from another pack, Leah and I were his elders, so Daniel, like all the others bowed down whenever we were around.
"I'm glad you're here. This is going to be Ernest and Landon's first bonfire." He said cheerfully. "They're dying to know everything about the Armadillo Fort's battle."
"We can't start the story without the protagonist," Leah said with a smile.
"I'm sorry we're late," Isaac said coming from the forest. "I took a detour to speak to Ron."
As always no one had sensed his presence but there he was. Isaac was now as tall as the twins and equally bulky. He had assumed the position of alpha of the Makah pack eight years ago right after marrying Diana Hansen, Dana's older sister.
"Mom, dad…" My son greeted us. "How long are you staying?"
"Just a few days," Leah replied, hugging him.
"You should have lunch with us tomorrow. The kids would love to see you."
Isaac and Diana had three children. Camelot was the oldest, he was six years old and he was probably the most imaginative of all our grandchildren. Three years ago Diana had twin girls, Avalon and Camlann.
"We'd love that too," Leah said. "I can't wait to see them."
"So, I believe you were about to start the story of how I died, right?" Isaac asked playfully. "Who wants to start?"
