Chapter 2: Heroes and Villains

Katori enters the classroom with her books held closely to her chest, feeling all eyes on hers as soon as she enters the room. It did not take long for her parentage to be spread all across the school with the help of a green haired boy that cannot keep a secret to save his life. Katori is unsure how Midoriya managed to learn about what was discussed within the confines of Principal Nezu's office, but she figures that it ties to his power mirroring All Might's, and assumes the blonde hero must have told him.

She takes her assigned seat next to Shoto Todoroki, whose two-toned eyes watch her with a blank expression. He seems to be the only person who does not watch her cautiously, as if they are expecting her to burn down the building.

She sighs as she sits down, opening her book and burying her face in it behind her jet-black hair. She hears the red-haired Kirishima shift in his seat in front of her. The hardening boy turns to her with matching red eyes planted on her and a large smile on his face. She looks up at him through stray strands of black hair to notice that he does not seem cautious of her either.

"So, is it true?" he asks looking at her with glistening eyes, as the rest of the class subtly turns their attention to their conversation to hear the rumors silenced by her. "Is it true that you are the daughter of Hero Killer: Replicant?"

She swallows hard. She and her father plotted out this scenario before she came to UA, but she truly thought that she would have more time developing relationships with the students before her parentage was discovered. She thought that she could make friends with everyone and form unbreakable bonds before they discovered this damning information, yet here she was; no friends and all eyes on her. "Yeah," Katori breathes as she hears the room stiffen at this response.

"That's pretty cool!" Kirishima responds cheerily and Katori raises her eyes, not prepared for that kind of response. "I saw his battle with the top five heroes a few years back when it was televised. He took over All Might's power and they could hardly hold him back! That fight made me want to become a Hero to stop bad guys like him," he says animatedly.

"Yeah," she says again, still unsure how to respond to him. He asks her if she saw the fight and she nods. She remembers the fight well, having watched it televised on the streets as her father finally managed to touch All Might and assume his power. He had twenty minutes with the Number One's power, and in that time, he was able to hospitalize Endeavor, Best Jeanist, and Edgeshot before All Might fought him. Their powers were matched and for a moment, Replicant acted as a symbol of hope for Villains as the blonde hero began fading. However, with his control over All Might's Quirk waning, Replicant used the last minute of the Number One's power to evade capture and has not been seen on the surface since. It was after that fight that Replicant dedicated his work to build Katori's Quirk, so that she could one day finish what her father started. Now here they were.

"And you're Mr. Aizawa's niece?" the crimson boy pulls her from her memories of her father.

"Yeah," she says once more.

"I can see the resemblance now. That's pretty cool!"

"Settle down class," Aizawa states in an already tired tone. His eyes land on Katori as they watch each other. She notices that she does look a lot like him. Seeing that as he is her uncle, she should resemble him in some ways, but she takes most of her looks from him. They both share the same pale skin and lengthy limbs. Their hair holds the same dark shade of black, with Katori's being a bit longer than Aizawa's as it reaches the middle of her back. The only difference between the two of them are their eyes. Despite having her mother's eyes in regards to her Quirk, she has her father's large purple orbs. Unlike Aizawa's lidded eyes, hers are large beams, lighting up with a glistening lavender tint that Aizawa cannot look onto for long.

He turns from her, seeing her father in her eyes, with the pain of the past weighing his chest. "Now many of you may have heard by now—because of a certain someone who cannot keep their words to themselves," Aizawa begins as he glares daggers at the green-haired boy who returns with wide fearful eyes. "That one of your fellow classmates comes from an… unconventional background that you may not be used to." Katori cocks her head to the side, curious at his choice of words. "Principal Nezu and I would like to remind you all that as Heroes in training, you are all expected to treat everyone you see with dignity and respect," he says, looking onto each child's face with intense seriousness.

Katori watches as Aizawa speaks with the class, figuring that he does not want to give this speech anymore than anyone wants to hear it. He does not trust her, and neither do any of them, but he does so anyway because he has been instructed to. Katori knows that she will have to work overtime to gain their trust if she expects her plan to work accordingly.

"Katori Satsuma," he says gritting his teeth so slightly, that Katori is the only one to notice, "Is the daughter of a well-known Villain. Despite this, we have decided to allow her to enroll at UA as she has demonstrated her desire to become a Hero—no different from any of you here," Aizawa speaks as everyone listens. "We have taken measures to ensure her connections with any villainous foes are nonexistent. With that information, you will all welcome her as you would any other student here at UA. We will not tolerate discrimination here, and any acts of such will be handled with severe punishment. Is that understood?"

The class shouts out a unified "Yes, Sir," and they no longer discuss her, as they move quickly to their next learning assignment.

Once they begin their assignment, Aizawa informs them that they will be working with All Might on an interactive Hero training. They all meet the mighty hero in a desolate mock city area. Katori stands between Bakugo and Kirishima as they listen to their placements within the exercise. She looks around, noticing everyone in their Hero costumes.

She submitted her Hero costume under a false name and was able to get her costume in time to wear it today. She wears a long sleeve black jumpsuit that fits her body way tighter than she specified, with a zipper down the front to her navel that she did not include. Her initial design was similar to Mr. Aizawa's, as it was intended to be a lose fitting jumpsuit with a utility belt, but it is clear the designers wanted to oversexualize her costume, and make it a cat suit. So she keeps the zipper remained fastened to her collarbone to keep it as modest as she can. She has a white belt that hugs her hips and white cuffs on her wrists that she can pull up and use as brass knuckles, with black combat boots that she is thankful they didn't make heeled. Her costume is simple, but with a Quirk that varies based on the power she steals, she isn't really able to tailor it to any specific need other than comfort, which the designers failed.

She looks over at Bakugo and Kirishima's costumes, liking theirs the best and is excited to see how they will perform in this assessment.

She turns her attention to All Might, staring into his eyes. She notices something strange with his power, feeling as though it is weaker than she expected from him. Based on everything that her father told her about the muscular blonde hero, she expected him to be a beacon of power, and though she can undoubtably sense his power permeating off of him, she cannot help but feel as though he is weaker than she expected from what the Number One hero ought to be.

"Most of the villain fights you see on the news take place outside, however—statistically speaking—run-ins with the most dastardly evildoers takes place indoors. Think about it; backroom deals, home invasions, secret underground lairs. Truly intelligent criminals stay hidden in the shadows." Katori watches him carefully, wondering if he speaks of her father. He is the only criminal that has evaded All Might and capture to this day and she wonders if he thinks of him too.

"For today's exercise," All Might continues, "You'll be split into teams of good guys and bad guys, and fight two-on-two indoor battles." Everyone begins erupting into a series of questions that overwhelm the blonde Pro Hero. It is clear that everyone seems concerned with this exercise and how seriously injured the students can become.

All Might refuses to answer any of these questions and instead moves towards a script, explaining to the students how the exercise will play out. The mission seems to be a simple fight and defend for the villains, or a retrieve and defuse for the heroes. A bomb has been placed in a building, and both sides are fighting against the clock until the timer detonates. Katori glances around at who she will be partnered with, wondering which Quirk will provide her with the most advantage.

The blonde hero lifts a golden box and instructs the students to draw from the ballot to pick their teams. Because Katori was admitted as an additional student beyond the twenty-student threshold, she is added to Team I as a third entry with Mashirao Ojiro and Toru Hagakure. She looks over at the boy with the tail and the invisible girl, hiding back the clear dissatisfaction on her face of the team she has been placed with. Regardless if they are chosen as Villains or Heroes, neither of their Quirks seem to be suitable for this type of exercise. She will have to rely on her opposing team's Quirks to win this fight.

She moves to the waiting room as Bakugo, Iida, Midoriya, and Uraraka are the first teams to go. She stands next to Todoroki and Yaoyorozu as they watch the fight unfold. Her eyes widen as she watches the exchange between the two boys on opposing sides. It is clear there is some preexisting underlining tension between the two of them as Bakugo begins attacking with wild uncontrolled personal attacks. He cries out threats of killing Midoriya, and points his cannons at the boy with no regard to how it will harm him. Katori rolls her eyes, seeing that if she were in Bakugo's position, she would immediately be expelled and labelled a villain because of her parentage if she tried pulling the same shit he is.

Katori takes mental notes of the way the two of them move. It is clear that Midoriya knows Bakugo's movements and can counter them effectively, to his dismay. She notices Bakugo's multi-hit attacks, where it is believed he is attacking one way, only to switch on his opponent and attack in another. She ensures to remember this for the next time she is standing against Bakugo.

She watches as Midoriya uses his Quirk, noticing that it is tearing up his body in a vicious fashion. Her brows come together as she watches the boy break his body to use his power. It is clear that he does not have a lot of practice using his Quirk and wonders how he could have gotten into the top Hero school if he never practiced with his powerful Quirk.

After the fight, the students watch as Midoriya gets taken away in a stretcher. It does not aid to the morale of the students as the next team is selected. Katori stiffens when she is selected as a villain with her team, feeling a strange humor in it all. Mezo Shoji and Shoto Todoroki are chosen as the heroes in the scenario, and Katori smiles to herself, knowing that she will have a fighting chance with Todoroki's Quirk.

The "villains" make their way to the fake bomb that they are to defend. Katori watches as Ojiro stretches while Hagakure works on taking off her clothes to appear invisible. They both stand there awkwardly, knowing that there is a naked girl in front of them, unsure how to react to her.

Katori thinks for a moment, guessing that Todoroki can only use one of his Quirks at once. Remembering that he only used his ice Quirk in the ball toss, Katori figures that he will use the same. He does not seem like the strategic type—with an aggressive Quirk such as his—so she imagines he will go for a direct attack, and going down to meet him will not be needed. She decides to wait at the bomb with Ojiro, while Hagakure goes down the hall.

She hears crunching and immediately jumps up when she feels the air cool down. As she expected, he freezes the entire building, trapping both Ojiro and Hagakure in ice, while she dodges the trap at the last moment. She goes and hides behind the door, as she hears his feet crunching under the ice.

Todoroki enters the room as Ojiro stiffens into his fighter's stance. His heterochronic eyes narrow at the blonde's attempt to fight him. "Pry yourself off if you want, but it will be hard to fight with no skin on the bottom of your feet."

"Not quite, Todoroki," Katori calls out from behind the door. He turns to her and she catches his eyes instantly. She smiles to herself as she takes his Quirk. She ducks down and uses his fire to heat up the room, melting the ice. He turns to her and sends a wall of ice her way, noticing his power is heavily handicapped by her Quirk. He groans to himself, knowing that he can still fight her, but not with his full potential.

She sends a wave of fire to combat the wall of ice, melting it before him. Her hair lifts in the air as she keeps her now red eyes on him. He sneers at her, shooting daggers of ice at her while she jumps and counters with a ball of fire aimed at him.

"Cute Quirk," he presses as he launches another attack her way. She creates a wall of ice now, blocking his attack as she moves to get him away from the bomb. She moves towards him and he pushes her back with another wall of ice.

Katori notices that he is not using his fire on her at all and wonders if he even has control of that side. She smiles at the idea and moves her hands to her side, taking both Fire and Ice in her grip. He looks down at her hands with wide incredulous eyes as he sees that she can control both of them at once; something that even he cannot do.

She shoots both elements his way and he narrowly dodges the attack. She notices that his ice only comes from his right side and his fire on his left. Knowing that he does not use his fire, she decides his left side is his weaker one, and she begins directing her attacks to his weaker flank.

Katori is trying to drain the clock rather than capturing him, and knows that at this rate, she will be able to keep him sweating. She closes her eyes and loses his Quirk as she blinks to saturate her eyes. She blinks a few times to stop the irritation and then moves back to him, capturing his Quirk as he sends an offensive attack her way. She blocks the icy attack with a wall of fire and presses forward towards him.

They begin combating in each other's faces and Todoroki is forced to use his left side as she continues to use fire against him. She exposes his weaker left side and he defends with a fiery left hook that almost hits her as she doubles back. She moves in when he quickly switches to his right, uppercutting her in the gut. Similar to Bakugo, he catches her in a quick switch of moves. She begins to get heated as she doubles over, trying to catch her breath from the hit.

Katori looks back at him, gaining his power once more as she launches herself at him. She pins him against the wall, snarling at him as she moves to strike him in the face with a burning fist when she notices the shock in his eyes. For a single moment, he is afraid of her, and in that moment, she gasps and staggers away from him. She shuts her eyes tightly, feeling her hair fall down her shoulders as she takes a step away from him. She breathes heavily, as strands of white hair fall before her face. She did not over exert herself, but her hair still turned white, possibly from the pure rage she was feeling in that moment. Had she not thought twice, she would have struck him in that moment, potentially harming him permanently.

Todoroki watches her carefully as she staggers away from him, the shock and worry lacing her eyes as she glances down at the ground. He can see the panic in her eyes at her actions and feels sorry for her. He exhales, moving from her and towards the bomb. He places his hand on the bomb slowly, knowing that she will not attempt to stop him.

"The Hero Team wins!" All Might calls out victoriously as Katori releases a built-up exhale. When they make their way out of the building, All Might tells the students where the villains failed and where the heroes succeeded. "He used his ice Quirk to incapacitate the villains," the blonde hero begins. "Without compromising the weapon or his teammate. Though Katori's use of his fire freed her teammates, her continued use as an offensive placed everyone at risk of being detonated." All Might looks down at the girl, feeling shivers run down his spine as he sees her father clearly in her eyes and now hair.

"But she stopped," Tsu mentions with a ribbit. "When she was attacking Todoroki, she stopped when she could have gotten the win for the villains.

"She's weak," Bakugo sneers, shaking in hate at the entire scenario that played out before him. "She chickened out and cost her team the win." Katori glares at him, taking in his red-hot eyes and he continues. "If you aren't going to give it your all then why are you even here?"

"To learn some self-control," Katori counters with a snide tone in her voice. "Maybe you should take notes," she mocks and the room grows quiet with her remark. She turns from him and watches the screen uninterestedly as the next team continues.

Bakugo huffs at her response and she watches as the rest of the teams go, while her hair slowly returns to its jet-black pigmentation. Todoroki slowly approaches her as she stands stiffly with her arms crossed over her chest. She glances over at him, seeing the soft look in his eyes as she returns with a hardened expression. "You did good," he reassures her, despite knowing that she lost control in there. She nods at him, not allowing herself to get angry at her lack of control.

After the end of their tests, Katori is one of the first to leave the classroom. She quickly makes her way away from the school as hushed conversations about the villain's daughter who almost killed a student are spread around her. She groans to herself at how terribly she handled the exercise today. Her father will be disappointed in her, no doubt.

She enters the underground lair, where the metallic door opens at the metal manipulating villain who works for her father. She looks up at the bald man who smiles down at her, and she returns with a sad smile. He frowns at her, not liking the image of her so down. "Why the long face?" Magnetic asks her.

Her father glances up from his book, noticing her disposition. "Something happen at school today?"

She groans as she plops down on the chair next to her father. She holds up her head with the palm of her hand as she stares off into nothingness and reliving the day. "We had an exercise today where I had to be a villain protecting a bomb while a group of heroes came to defuse the thing," she begins and he listens intently. "My team was useless when this stupid kid on the Hero side froze everything. I took his Quirk and we began fighting." She shakes her head as the memory replays, "He caught me with a stupid quick switch maneuver and I got angry. I used his fire Quirk and almost killed the idiot. My hair turned white and he saw the look in my eyes, it was undeniable. You should have seen the way All Might looked at me when he saw my white hair," she groans as she rubs her palm on her head in frustration. "I was going to burn him, Dad," she says with a prominent frown on her lips, "And everyone saw it," she wines as she fights back the frustrated tears. "There is no way they are going to see me as a hero after today."

Her father exhales at her frustration, smiling softly at her as he lifts himself from his chair, placing his hands on her sunken shoulders supportively. "Not all Heroes respond in ways that they should or ought to," he begins. "There is no do-or-don't guideline that separate heroes and villains behind clear lines. Sometimes, heroes do things that are not very heroic, and sometimes, villains do things that are not very villainous," he says wisely and she looks up at him with tangled brows. He glances down at her with a warm smile. "The best thing you can do now is prove to them that you are a supporting figure. You are not the purest hero—not by a longshot—but you are a hero, and they should expect nothing less," he tells her sternly. "Begin with apologizing to that boy you attacked. Admit fault, admit guilt, and admit intentions to reform. You are not perfect; that is why you are at UA."

She inhales deeply, knowing that he is right, and her reaction to Bakugo's harsh words said more or less the same. Her father moves from behind her back to his chair. He sits down, crossing his legs as he looks at her curiously, "You mentioned All Might," he begins. "Tell me what you've assessed."

She shrugs her shoulders, "He…" she stops before she can complain about him, remembering what she felt when she looked onto his eyes. "He is not as strong as I expected," she presses and her father looks at her with curious eyes. She shrugs once more, "I don't know how to explain it, but when I looked into his eyes, it was as if he was… incomplete. I remembered the fight you had with him and how powerful you two were when you fought. It just seemed as though he wasn't all there…" she says shaking her head at the strange feeling.

"Did you take his power?"

"No," she states.

"Good, remember what we discussed. You will under no circumstances use your powers on him. They will never be able to trust you if you do."

"But still, you're not in the least bit curious where his power has gone?" she questions him.

He brushes his clean-shaven chin in thought. "It's curious, to say the least. Continue your assessment on him, but maintain your distance."

"There is something else," she tells him and he looks up at her, "There is a boy; Midoriya. He has a strange Quirk. Every time I assess it, it's stronger. He doesn't come from an influential family, and with a Quirk like that, someone would have to have been a Pro Hero." She presses her brows at her father as she divulges the information, "It feels like All Might's power… only…" she hesitates, "only stronger."

Her father's jaw tenses at this, while his hard purple eyes dart back and forth between hers, scanning hers for a trace of foolishness. "Have you taken his Quirk?"

"I did on the first day on our Quirk Assessment Test, but I ended up not using it because I remembered not to overuse my power like you told me," she begins, "But when it was flowing through me, it was like an electric wave of pure power. I have never felt anything like it. And seeing him use it today in our exercise, it reminded me so much of your fight with All Might." Her father breathes, formulating a plan of action with this discovery, remembering the power of All Might to feel as though electricity flew through his body. "He's not strong enough to handle it though," she speaks up. "He broke his arms using it; which is strange because you would think that he would have built up a tolerance to his own Quirk."

Her father smirks at this, a spark of curiosity igniting in his mind. "I want you to attempt using this Quirk," he commands her. "Use it in an organic way as you did the boy's today. Do not force it out of him, but use it and report back to me when you do so."

She swallows hard, unsure what her father has planned, but knowing not to question him. "Yes, Sir," she breathes, thinking about how she will use her Quirk on him next.
