The door of the dormitory opened and in came James Potter, grinning like an idiot.
"Why are you smiling like that?" Remus Lupin asked, putting aside the book he was reading.
"Guys, I think it might work out this year" James said abruptly.
Sirius Black rolled over on his bed to face James, and raised an eyebrow at him.
"What might work out this year?" he asked.
James gave him a disbelieving look.
"My chances with Evans, of course" he said in a tone as though he was explaining a three year old that two and two made four.
"Oh" Sirius said and, to James' annoyance, laughed.
"What are you laughing for?" he demanded.
"Oh just thinking about how I gave up on counting the number of times you've told me this Prongs. Every year!" Sirius explained.
"But this time it has a chance" James said and turned to look at Remus for some support, but he was disappointed. Remus was, too, trying hard not to laugh.
The door of the dormitory opened again, and Peter Petegriew came in.
He looked around and was surprised to see James.
"I thought you were having your Head duties" he said, plopping down on his bed.
"Don't have one today" James said shortly.
"Anyways, as I was saying- and it's good that you came Pete- that things will work for me. Are" James added slowly.
At this, Sirius' head jerked his way, Remus raised an eyebrow and Peter looked deeply confused.
"What things?" he asked.
"With Evans" James repeated and looked around at his friends' reactions.
"What do you mean they are?" Sirius asked.
James smirked at this.
"I mean" James sat down on Remus' bed with a plop, earning a glare from it's owner "that I was in the library just now".
"Huh?" Peter said.
"How does that help?" Sirius said but Remus shushed him. He looked at James.
"What happened then?" he asked.
"Evans was there. You know that we're already on good terms because of the Head thing" Sirius snorted at that. James paid him no attention and continued.
"And so what happened was, she asked me for a study date" he finished.
"What!" his friends yelled so loudly that James had to stuff his fingers into his ears.
"Lily asked you for a study date?" Sirius repeated.
"Yup" James grinned.
"No chance for that. I'm feeling as though you are leaving something out" Remus pointed.
"What, you're not being truthful!?!" Sirius exclaimed dramatically "James Fleomont Potter, tell me the truth or you'll be grounded for a month!"
James frowned at Sirius' perfect imitation of the way in which his mother always scolded him.
"That wasn't funny" James complained "how did you know it so well?"
"Perks of living with you. Getting to know the ways in which you get told off" Sirius said cheerfully. James sighed.
"Oh what's the story?" Remus said.
"What story?" James asked, blinking, and then he remembered and grinned.
"Bad memory" he said, laughing.
"Very bad indeed" Sirius added.
James glared at him but then looked at Remus.
"I have told you the truth-" James began but stopped when he knew that they weren't going to believe him. After all, Remus' senses got stronger during this time of the month and he could easily catch a lie.
"So?" Peter said.
"So" James sighed "the truth is that when I was in the library, me and Lily sat opposite to each other. She didn't notice me first, had her nose stuck in her homework. But then her ink bottle slipped and I stopped it from hitting the floor, for which she was oh-so-grateful"- Sirius, Remus and Peter rolled their eyes- "and then she asked me what I was doing in a library? Imagine! Anyways, she suspected that I might set the place on fire" here he was interrupted by the howls of his friends' laughter.
"Don't laugh, or I won't continue!" James cried over the noice. That shut them up, though they still had a grin on their faces.
"So after that we worked in silence, but she broke the silence by asking me if I'd like to work with her on the partner project Minnie gave us. Naturally, I said yes. And oh, when she was leaving she told me good night" James added.
"That's it?" Remus asked after a pause in which James beamed at them.
"Yeah" he said.
"When is this study session by the way?" Sirius asked.
"It's not a study session!" James protested.
"Nor a date" Peter pointed out.
"Ah, fine, nor a date. But man, one can dream, can't they?" James said exasperatedly.
"Sure mate, one can always dream. Moony here is a living proof" Sirius said, playfully prodding Remus.
"Oi! I do NOT dream!" Remus defended himself, even though he knew it wasn't true.
"Uh, so all we have to do is to wait and watch" Sirius said.
"Wait and watch what?" James asked.
"Wait and watch if something really happens, or is it one of your many failures again" Remus explained.
"Hey, I'm not going do anything wrong this time!" James said.
"We'll see that mate" Sirius grinned.
"It's quite late actually, so we can continue this tomorrow" Remus said.
"Yeah sure" James said, and began to rummage in his trunk for his pyjamas.
As he climbed into his bed and stared at the ceiling, he thought that maybe this year was his year, after all.
