The Fire
Yamada and Kosuda left the shrine as Kosuda strained on his crutches. Yamada suggested sitting down on a nearby bench to rest for a while and asked him what his plans for the rest of the day were and Kosuda said he hadn't really thought beyond coming out this morning. Yamada suggested going to Cafe Guerbois for an afternoon snack and walked him back to his house. The two of them were intercepted by Kazuki who asked with a snide smile what they had planned later. The two, innocently and honestly, just said meeting up for a snack. Kazuki smiled, rolled her eyes, and just said not to allow Kosuda to 'slip and fall' again. Yamada blushed and Kosuda rolled his eyes. As soon as Yamada was in an Uber on the way home Kazuki demanded to know when he intended to become a ram and no longer a lamb. No longer taken aback by his sister and her constant pestering and hammering him of details about Yamada Kosuda just shrugged and said he'd see when he can walk again.
Arriving home Yamada went straight to her room to think. She had come so far and yet not moved at all. She felt all her lust, all her feelings, and all her drive still very much intact. She pondered acting differently towards Kosuda in the new year, but was lost as far as any way to do it. The Eros Deity circled Yamada shouting all kinds of dirty acts to perform to get Kosuda worked up again, but Yamada didn't respond in any way. Yamada felt tired from the last few days and decided to just lie down for a few minutes when she slipped away into a slumber...where her Eros Deity was waiting for her before she even really awoke in her dream and took her to what looked like a map room. Sitting down the deity said it was time to plan her next move, a strategic offensive, and Yamada rolled her eyes. Yamada shook her head saying her ideas got Kosuda crippled, she had no intention of taking any advice right now, and possibly ever again. The deity smiled and said she knew she'd say that, she had a new set of advice, a new set of tactics, and that is why they were in her 'war room' and not merely in the clouds. Yamada decided to sit down, as her own desires lit up like a flame, and asked with a snide smile what she had in mind. Proud and smiling the deity spoke of approaching things more like tigress and not a wolf. She needed to once again sneak up behind Kosuda, this time more metaphorically and not literally, and not be the wolf. The deity spoke about how now that Kosuda is more comfortable around her and she around him it was time to resume her plans in a subtle way. In a sense she had to play the role of a gf...and still be a predator. Perhaps, one may say, a wolf in sheep's clothing. Yamada agreed and asked her what her next move should be. The Eros Deity smiled and said, "Good to have you back."
During their afternoon snack all Yamada could do was start to plan, once again, her ideas to get Kosuda alone. While most guys would love a woman as motivated at Yamada most men would also love, the same amount, not to get crippled or jerked around-the bad way anyway. Kosuda spoke about innocent activities they could try together, ideas including cooking together, getting together for a movie night, or a nature hike. Though she nodded and even gave some feedback she wasn't listening beyond bits here and there.
The following morning Yamada awoke having had dreams she couldn't really remember too well and yet felt more empowered. She felt she'd leveled up and knew she had to call Kosuda and do something fun. Still in her pajamas she texted Kosuda and was overjoyed to see him texting back within minutes of her asking how he was and if he wanted to do something today rather than simply demanding they did. Kosuda replied he'd love to meet up and go to the mall as he had received a gift card and wanted to use it. She agreed and said she'd meet him there in two hours. As Kosuda was about to leave he found Yamada standing outside smiling with an Uber behind her waiting. Kosuda was shocked and asked how she knew he was coming out now. She smiled and just said she knows how long it would take him to get to the train. The driver got out and helped Kosuda with his crutch and said he'd heard about his slip and fall. Once in the car Yamada looked Kosuda straight in the eye with a sweet smile and asked, "Is your ankle feeling better? That slip and fall was terrible." Kosuda did his best not to blush.
Arriving at the mall Yamada very nicely walked with Kosuda and helped him whenever she could and played the role of a girlfriend quite well. She was pleased with herself and Kosuda impressed feeling she really was acting better. Kosuda led her to the photography store and said he wanted to get some film and new mounting paper and before Kosuda could get to the line to ring out, straining on his crutches, Yamada grabbed his stuff, and paid for it. Kosuda was moved and dropped his crutches to give her a hug and kiss thanking her. Yamada blushed, but quickly had to help Kosuda from falling. Heading over to get a hot Aunt Anne's Pretzel Kosuda used his gift card to buy some of the hot and salty snacks. The two ate and spoke about the rest of vacation and Kosuda suggested seeing a movie later in the week as he'd be busy for the next few days. Yamada agreed and said it sounded great and as soon as the Uber dropped off Kosuda Yamada had the driver take her back to the mall...
Arriving home later that day Yamada ran to her room with her own new camera. It was a simple digital camera and she happily bought it along with a tripod too. Locking her door she removed all of her clothing, set the camera's timer, and began to take several pictures of her on her bed in suggestive poses. When she finished she felt elation and joy with just a little bit of reservation. The deity laughed happily feeling Yamada was once again on the path to victory for her V-card being turned in, punched, and no longer valid. As soon as she was done she dressed, grabbed her coat, and ran off to the pharmacy where she bought all of her "supplies." With eyes of hearts she ran to back where the digital photo station machine was, purchased ten prints, inserted the camera's memory chip into the slot, and looked both ways before pressing the start button. She proudly poured through her photos and selected her most depraved ones, put on the black and white setting to further entice her target using the format beloved by him, and hit "PRINT." The moment the first print hit the tray she heard a familiar voice.
Takeshita smiled and said,"Yamada! Hey! Did you buy your own camera?! That's awesome. Where's Kosuda? I figured the two of you'd be out-"
Yamada quickly turned around and tried to block the view of the screen and the photos.
Takeshita knew Yamada well enough to know she was, poorly, attempting to hide something.
Yamada nervously said,"...Hey.. Takeshita...uhhh...where is Daisuke? I figured the two of you'd be out-"
Takeshita didn't say a word and grabbed the next photo as it came out and gasped when she saw it and started to freak out when she lowered her voice, looked Yamada right in the eyes, and gave a cold look.
"Doing a little photography Yamada? Surely this is for 'the sake of art' right? I swear Yamada if you plan on showing these to Kosuda in another attempt at seduction you're going to make things worse. I mean are you trying to get his other ankle-"
"Stop it! Stop it. Geez...you sound so high and mighty. You're the one who's with an upperclassman, you probably turned in your V-card a long time ago. Not all of us are regularly getting laid."
"Yamada...you're focusing on the wrong things. What happened after you flashed him in the library!? Are you trying to get his attention or show him you're ready to show it off for anyone?"
"Whatever."
"Fine...show him. Hide them in his locker, slide them into his desk at school when no one's looking, or hide them under his pillow in his room. I am sure things will go just the way you want. I mean he's got a second ankle to sprain."
"Hey...you're on a high 'level' and I just want to reach it too."
"This isn't a game and what's more if you 'jump too many levels at once' you're gonna lose. You'll lose all your 'levels' and with them Kosuda too. He's a good boy and you've come a long way with him. Let it come organically, I did with Daisuke. He's not perfect and there are things he's leaving me with unsatisfied, but we got there together. He didn't pressure me and I didn't push him."
Yamada looked towards her and said, "Oh are you done with your romance novel/movie-pitch? I was thinking of ways to get my man into my cave...I mean capture my prey...I mean...'get intimate' ...is that better?"
Takeshita shook her head, "Seriously, Yamada, have you learned nothing from the past? You're off to a good start this year...well minus this moment...but approach things differently. After all up until this point everything which could have gone wrong has gone wrong. Are you about to continue with what went wrong? Look me straight in the eye and say you're okay with this and consider it a good idea which has very little chance of going wrong."
Yamada looked both ways, at the ground, gripped the collar of her shirt, and couldn't make eye contact. She began,"Well...I mean-"
"That's what 'busted' looks like." Takeshita smiled and tried to lighten the mood.
Yamada smiled and said she was right and thanked her.
"I'll just collect these and return them to the photolab tech, he'll shred them and refund me."
"Good idea. Call me later, we'll get together at 'The W' for a bite."
"Okay then see you later!" Yamada took her prints, left with a huge smile, and went across the pharmacy towards the photolab counter.
Takeshita shook her head and knew full well she wasn't going to return a single one of them and left.
Later at 'The W' the moment Yamada sat down Takeshita grabbed her purse and held it above her head.
Yamada exclaimed,"Hey what the crap?! Give it back!"
Takeshita, "Yamada...I will bet you a month's worth of meals together you didn't get rid of your photos."
Yamadaq, "Oh yeah? What do you think you're gonna find in there? What's your goal? I would love free meals."
Takeshita, "I am going to find your photos, all of them. I am betting you didn't return a single one! I am betting they're all here. If I am right we are going to personally deliver them...well you will. We'll walk there this evening, together, and I'll wait around the corner. You'll either put them under his pillow or call him outside and show him on the street down the block so his sister doesn't see. I know they're in there. I didn't personally see them, but I know you. Admit they're in there and we'll just talk, force my hand and we'll walk.
Yamada didn't say a word, attempting to bluff, and looked her straight in the eye.
Takeshita didn't flinch and said, "Last chance Yamada..."
Yamada, "Go ahead and look...I'd love free meals. I heard the romantic places I want to go with Kosuda to are expensive and-"
Takeshita opened her purse and grabbed the photo envelope out.
"Hey that's my...!"
Takeshita didn't gloat, she didn't get angry, she didn't smile, but gave that deadpan look we all give at times to a busted friend.
"Okay Yamada...tonight we walk. I'll hold onto these in the meantime and meet you outside your place tonight. Remember: Don't show and I'll show them to him."
Takeshita left 'The W' and walked home. She loved her best friend and didn't want to see her lose a guy who not only put up with her, but she now likes a lot too. Takeshita knew she had to at least try to save Yamada from herself this time as she'd made a lot of progress and didn't want to see her throw it away. However, Takeshita knew she had to have Yamada show the photos to Kosuda, otherwise if she tossed them Yamada would just do it again. Takeshita knew Yamada needed to get it out of her system.
Later that night after dinner Yamada met Takeshita outside her home dressed conservatively and trying to look innocent. They called for an Uber and were soon on their way to Kosuda's home.
Takeshita, "Trying to look your best? Like a little lady and not the 'Yamada' we know? It's a good start, but if I give you these back I know what you'll do and likely what will happen. I am trying to 'save you from yourself'. At least this way you can show him, explain what it is about, and with me nearby you'll not freak out, drop them, and run.
Yamada, "I know...I know. It is just so hard watching you and, every other couple, seemingly getting regular action."
Takeshita,"So? It's their life and their story. Sex isn't the path to a golden life of joy-when it is over the couples dress and go back to their normal life together. The problems and stresses of our lives aren't over merely by having sex, it is just part of life, and the quicker you realize that the quicker-"
"So let me experience that! I want to get over it, just get over the 'hump'... 'Hump'." Yamada laughed.
"Uhhh...what did I do to deserve a friend like you? Okay look, you are my friend and I always have your back when you do rational things, even irrational things, but never be spiteful. I cannot support you if you're spiteful. I don't know why I am telling you this since I doubt you'll do it, but let me say it again: Just try to act calmly, be yourself-but for godsakes be the 'diet' version of yourself for a little while. Once you're comfortable and not so awkward you can level-up again. Dial it down a bit. I warn you:if you keep sending mixed-signals to Kosuda he won't sprain his other ankle, but you may end up breaking his heart."
"His 'heart'? Please! We're teenagers, this isn't something when we're in our 20s and 30s, this isn't Singles the movie. Get rejected by one guy or girl and it doesn't matter, there are tons."
"Movie or not we all have feelings. You don't like to be teased, have people change their minds on you, and make you feel stupid do you?"
"No."
"None of us do. We can be forgiven when we do it to others, but you've already done that with Kosuda...a lot. He's forgiving, but I am telling you this again Yamada: Push him and don't follow through and you'll push him away and NO I am not suggesting you get into bed with him unless you feel you're truly ready..."
"...Oh I am sorry...were you done with your storybook approach to things?"
Takesthita shook her head and plead with Yamada to at least consider what she said. Yamada agreed she was her best friend and advice is worth listening to if you trust the person. Takeshita took the photos out of her purse and took a deep breath.
The Uber dropped them off in front of Kosuda's house and before they could even walk to the door Kuzuki came home from a jog.
Kuzuiki ran up smiling and said, "Yamada! Hey how are you? Oh you must Takeshita, I heard about you from my little brother . Ooooh...what brings the two of you out here tonight? You both here to 'see' my brother together?"
Takesshita freaked out, "What?! No! I have a boyfriend! We're here just to-"
Yamada put her hand up stopping Takesthia, smiling, said to relax, and that Kuzuki is just joking...and to "dial it down a little."
Takeshita looked down, apologized, and said she was just on edge and when asked why she just looked towards Yamada and back with a small smile. This time Takeshita and Kuzuki laughed just imagining any number of reasons Yamada could provoke that kind of a reaction. Yamada angrily asked what was so funny, but instinctively knew.
While still laughing Kuziki said, "Oh you have photos to show him! Let me see."
Figuring they had to be innocent photos she took them from Takeshita before she realized what was happening.
Takesthita, "No wait! Don't open those! They're just for-"
It was too late: Kuzuki had opened the envelope and was taking out the first photo.
Kuzuki, "Oh relax! I'm sure they're nothing too bad. It's not like they're gonna be nude photos or-"
A look of shock stopped Kuzuki as she stopped mid-sentence and dropped the photos to the ground.
Yamada and Takeshita froze worried she'd freak out and tell them to beat it, reprimand them, or worse. Sadly it turned out to be worse as Kuziki calmly picked up the photos, put them back into the pharmacy's envelope, handed them to Takeshita, and looked both of them in the eye with a smile as she opened the front door of the house, and shouted upstairs, "Takashi! Get down here. Yamada and her little friend have a 'present' for you."
Takesthita quickly pressed for an Uber and saw one would be arriving in five minutes.
Kuziki smirked and entered the house as Kosuda came downstairs happily and greeted both and gave Yamada a friendly and tasteful kiss on the cheek and hug. Yamada's stomach began to hurt and Takeshita rolled her eyes, handed Yamada the envelope of photos, and said, "You're on your own. I'll be around the corner waiting for you."
Kosuda looked towards Takeshita with a bunch of questions in his head and she just said it was nice to see him and said she was sure they'll be talking soon.
Yamada looked at Kosuda knowing this could not go well, that it was merely a question of how poorly it could go at this point, and just hoped the fallout wouldn't be too bad.
Kosuda looked her with his kind eyes and with confusion asked what was wrong before saying whatever was wrong it would be okay.
Yamada thought about running, fought back a panic attack, and thought some more before just deciding to come clean and said, "Here."
Yamada looked at the ground and handed him the envelope.
Kosuda opened the photos and with great shock dropped them and picked them up and attempted to hand them back to her.
Yamada, "Kosuda...I don't know what's about to happen, but I just need to be honest with you: these are for you, or were going to be, but I had second thoughts, and then Takeshita forced me to bring them to you-"
"Who took these?"
"...ummm."
"Who took these? This is your bedroom Yamada!"
"I know. I know. They were meant to be a gift for you and-"
"You don't own a camera! Are you seeing someone else? Who was taking these of you? Did Takeshita? Who took these Yamada?!"
"I did! I got a camera today after we left the mall, I went back to get one. I figured we could share a hobby together. Please, don't be mad."
Yamada started crying, worrying things were falling apart rapidly.
Kosuda apologized, calmed Yamada, and said they were beautiful. He asked, with a smile, what was the occasion for this gift.
Yamada calmed, dried her eyes, and said, "Well I was excited for your getting off your crutches soon and wanted to give them to you to..."
Yamada's Eros Deity flew around around her saying," 'To get you hot!' Say it Yamada! This guy is dense! Why else would you give them?! Jeeez! Maybe it is time you start fresh! This guy is dense!"
Kosuda said they were beautiful and asked if that meant Yamada was ready for more together soon.
Yamada smiled and started to stutter,"I uhhh...that sounds nice...I uh..no...not yet...I mean I want to with you, but uh..."
Kosuda moved a little closer on his crutches and was about to hug her telling her to calm down when Yamada suddenly had a panic attack. Yamada swiftly backed away before turning to run. Before she could get a step away she heard Kosuda cry out and fall to the ground. Yamada turned around and was quite worried about his fall and she cried out apologies as she helped him up. Dusting himself off Kosuda said he it was okay.
Yamada exclaimed, "Your hands are bleeding! Oh my god! I am terrible! You must hate me-"
"Relax. Calm down. They're just scraped, I used them to break my fall. I'm okay. I'm okay. What's bothering you?" Kosuda asked calmly.
Yamada smiled, took the photos smiling as Kosuda reached out to hand them back to her, felt things were okay when she suddenly had another panic attack. Yamada ran down the street crying and turned around the corner. She saw Takeshita in the Uber waiting with the door open. Yamada ran in and the Takesthita nodded to the driver and they took off.
"You had an Uber ready?! What the crap?!" Yamada asked angrily drying her tears.
"I told you I'd be waiting. I knew you'd need me and a ride," Takeshita said in nice voice with a sisterly smile.
Yamada's phone rang and she quickly denied the call already knew who it was and put her phone on the car seat. The phone rang again and she denied it a second time.
The phone rang a third time and Yamada looked at Takesthita pleadingly and said, "Takeshita, you have to make it better."
Takeshita picked up the phone rolling her eyes, shook her head, and said, "Hello Kosuda...Yamada is here with me in an Uber. She's okay...just a little shaken up. She'll be okay, I'll take care of this. She's just having a bad night. Tell your sister everything is okay and she'll understand...she too knows Yamada at this point. Have a good night."
Kosuda thanked her, asked if he could speak to her, and thought about demanding Yamada speak to him. Kosuda then thought better of it and to let Takeshita handle it tonight thanking her again and asked her to tell Yamada she's free to text or call later if she wants.
Once inside the house Kazuki gave that look of having a hundred questions at once. She took Kosuda to the table and sat down asking what that was all about. Kosuda did his best to explain things even as he didn't understand much. Kazuki said Yamada was confused and Kosuda needs to give her some time and space. Kosuda said has given her plenty of space, understanding, patience, and continues to do so but wishes she could be a little more clear with her desires. Kazuki said someday he'll understand and appreciate more what she's going through right now and just be thankful his other ankle isn't getting sprained for now. Kosuda shook his head and went upstairs.
In Kosuda's sleep he found himself in the photolab developing a picture which turned out to be the first nude picture he saw in Yamada's envelope. He was captivated by it and smiled looking over his beautiful girlfriend, one he felt was too good for him, and admired it as he hung it to dry. A voice made him turn to his side where his Eros Deity waited for him with his eyes shut as always.
"Kosuda...it's time to ditch her. She's the hottest girl in the school, yes, but she's treating you horribly. She's hot, she's cold, she's hot, she's cold, and she got you crippled and later pass out while lunging for her. All of her teasing led to a breaking point...except it was you who was broken. Ditch the bitch," the deity said while shaking his head sitting on the photo clothesline.
"Hey! Watch your mouth! She's my girlfriend and what's more she is just confused, I know I am at times, and even predatorial, but she loves me...and I her!" Kosuda responded.
"Does 'love' involve constantly being led on, having things change without clear reason or signal, or end getting one hurt-literally?"
"Sure it does...I mean I think it does. This isn't a 'teen romance' story, this is my life. Things are awkward, things are unpredictable, and Kuzuki reminded me of that today. Besides-I haven't been 'Mr. Romance Novel' guy myself. I have my own issues. My friends face the same things with their girlfriends...I imagine."
"Time to imagine less and find out more. Look...it is time: You've shown patience and care and it's gotten you crippled and passed out on the floor...both of which were her fault I might add. If she'd simply put out you'd both happily be a couple enjoying the good stuff, great stuff, and at the peak of your sexual-drive. Make no mistake: She didn't have to do anything, she could have told you that she wasn't ready, and could have waited until another time and while that isn't fun at least it could have been a clear signal. Man is not meant to simply be led on, but be on conquest they follow leads to the prize: a woman who he truly wants to be with for numerous reasons."
"Okay, great find me a woman. I am sure they're lining up for me right? Send one to the photolab tomorrow. Do it! Show me how easy it is to find someone who you like, treats you well, understands you, likes the same things you do, and just happens to be beautiful."
"That would make you leave Yamada? The situation as you described it?"
"...Sure why not? Not like that's gonna happen."
"Be careful Kosuda...while you may be dreaming now...your dreams could come true. To put it another way: Be careful what you wish for...you may just get it."
Kosuda laughed incredulously and said, "Find me this woman, this woman of my dreams, send her to the photolab tomorrow-and I'll ditch Yamada."
The following morning in homeroom Yamada couldn't make eye-contact with Kosuda at all. Kosuda kept trying to at least hold her hand and comfort her still, but she couldn't even put her hand out. She was shaking. Kosuda focused on class and later spoke to Takesthita and asked if things were really okay. Takeshita smiled and said Yamada was okay, she'd calmed, but was just really embarrassed and needed time to recover. Kosuda shook his head and said she may need to just relax more. After classes Kosuda went to the regular Monday photoclub meeting and was wrapping up to leave, last to leave always closes down, when there was a knock on the door.
"We're done, the meeting is over" Kosuda said to the door assuming it was another club member a little late to the meeting.
"I'm not here for a meeting, I was double-checking this was the right room," a voice said.
Kosuda opened the door and said, "What room are you looking for this is the-" Kosuda stopped mid-sentence seeing a beautiful girl holding a camera with the strap around her neck. She stood a little shorter than Kosuda with long dark hair, cute square glasses, and gave a warm smile.
"I was looking for the photography club. The principle told me some of the clubs recently switched rooms or were switching soon. My name is Ayami. Are you Kosuda?" the girl asked.
Kosuda couldn't think or speak abd stood there slack-jawed with a thousand and one thoughts and questions.
Kosuda got a hold of himself knowing he had to say something and said,"...Uh yes. Yes, I am. How did you know to look for me?"
"The clubs coordinator told me I should seek you out for information on joining up. I just moved to town and I figured I should look for other photography enthusiasts and was thrilled when I heard this school had both a club and a functional dark room. You rarely see those, I have only seen one other."
Kosuda was in a haze and, without even realizing it, asked her if she'd like to join him at the "The W" for something to eat and he'd tell her all about the club's happenings and upcoming events. Ayami blushed, smiled, said she'd love to, and for him to lead the way. Kosuda found himself sitting at the table with food not even remembering the last twenty or so minutes. He hoped he was listening and being attentive.
Ayami looked at Kosuda and said with a smile, "I saw some of your work hanging, you like nature shots. You must have a great set of lenses."
Kosuda dropped his burger and got a grip of himself and said, "Oh I have a great new telephoto lens, it really extends quite far."
Ayami smiled, asked if that was so, and said she hopes she can see it soon.
Kosuda's heart raced and he felt large beads of sweat forming on his forehead, but quickly calmed realizing his mind was being affected by Yamada's way too much. Kosuda calmed and asked what brought her to his school and she went on to say her family moves more often than she'd like to, but said it was necessary. The two stayed and talked for quite some time on a bunch of topics before realizing it had been two hours. Ayumi thanked Kosuda and quickly left saying she looked forward to seeing him tomorrow.
Kosuda went home and went about his nightly routine. After dinner and homework he attempted to call Yamada, but only got her voicemail after a few rings. He texted her a simple message saying everything was okay and he wanted to talk to her, saw it was delivered, and even read. Kosuda watched with anticipation hoping to see the dots on his iPhone indicating someone is writing back. He didn't see them. He shook his head, started to climb into bed when he heard a knock on his door. Expecting it to be his mother or father Kosuda said to come in and Kazuki entered. Kosuda was shocked as she never knocks.
"Hey, heard from Yamada at all?" Kazuki asked.
"No, she's not responding to texts and what's more I know she's reading them too," Kosuda said with his head hanging.
"Forget her, it's time you break up. She's pretty, she can be sweet, but she's also a tease. You can do better."
"What?! I love her! She's the hottest girl at school, she cares for me, and she makes me feel better about myself."
"Why?"
"Because she makes me feel good about myself. She's so beautiful, more beautiful than I deserve."
Kazuki looked at him with a sisterly look with no trolling and said, "Do you hear yourself? Did you hear what you just said? 'More beautiful than I deserve.' Takashi! You're more than she deserves. Yes, she's pretty-but that is no reason for you to feel self-esteem. You may feel more popular, but what purpose does it serve? Did you make new friends? Are girls coming onto you now? Are your grades better? Are schools accepting applications based on popularity? Have your intellectual or physical abilities grown? This may be a hard lesson but learn it now: popularity is meaningless and quickly becomes yesterday's news."
Kosuda looked shocked and said, "Wow...I never knew you felt that way about Yamada...we've been through a lot together and she-"
"Name me two things you have in common. While you're considering that tell me the last time she wanted to learn more about you other than your performance as an 'object of her affection'? Does she seem like a friend to you or someone you're always worried about or strung-out over? Does she make you feel at ease or worried?"
"...She's not perfect, but neither am I-"
"No, you're not. I'm not either. No one is...but you take her out doing your photography, you went to the water park and fireworks, you spent time with her on Christmas eve, you give meaningful gifts, you went to a Christmas party with her, you volunteer with her at the library, but she doesn't seem to want to explore new interests together. Has she ever wanted to/suggested going to a photography show? A museum? A movie? It was neat to see my little brother going out with "the hottest girl" in class on a few dates, but I'd hoped she'd respond better to your calming nature and charming self. You may think of yourself average and not deserving, but you are you, and therefore special. You have your interests, passions, are a nice guy, and seek meaning. She doesn't deserve you. Physical desires aren't enough to stay together."
"Oh come on sis, we're in high-school."
"Exactly! You're not little kids anymore, you're growing up fast. There are others out there, better girls, and you should enjoy yourself when with them-not be worried all the time. Yes, I know dating isn't easy-and yes I do go on dates—but there is better out there. I don't date too much since I cannot find a good man. I am not 'anti-Yamada' ...she has the chance to mature. Maybe she will more, but for now she doesn't deserve you...and you deserve better. Consider what I said." Kosuda thanked her, agreed with her, and said he'd think about it.
Kazuki said goodnight and closed the door. Kosuda felt a maelstrom of emotions and thoughts as he drifted off to bed. In his dream he sat with Yamada at the "The W" and asked her about getting together to try out her new camera in the park and she shrugged and said whatever. He then asked about seeing a movie or the latest trendy show streaming. She said none of those interest her. Exacerbated he asked what she wanted to do and she just smiled. Kosuda asked what did she want to do after and she shrugged and said she didn't know. Kosuda asked her surely she had something she wanted to do the day after being at the hotel she shrugged again saying whatever he wanted to do.
Kosuda's Eros Deity appeared in full-size form and told Yamada to get out from the booth, watched as Yamada walked away, sat down, and said, "Imagine that...a goal that seems unattainable even when you do your best. Kosuda, I was wrong about pushing you towards Yamada, she's a tease. There are better targets out there..."
Kosuda jumped and said, "Oh, it's you again. What do you want now? You here to kick me when I'm down? See me attempt to salvage something after going against my sister's advice? Besides-I'm not even sure you're my sub-conscious, me just dreaming, or real. So let me wake up if you're my sub-conscious and if I'm merely dreaming I'm gonna go get some extra fries."
The deity spoke, "Some more fries? Ask Ayami if she'd like to get sushi next time, ditch the fries."
Kosuda, "How do you...you're my sub-conscious aren't you-of course you'd know about her."
"Ah...but how did she appear to you the next day? You said you'd ditch Yamada if you met a sweet and lovely girl who is into the same things you are, likes you, and happens to be beautiful. Hold up your end of the bargain."
"Did you send her!?"
"Send? No. I knew she coming to your school and figured she may run into you. A chance. Besides-if not yesterday you could eventually anyway. So ditch Yamada."
"I just met Ayami yesterday, I took her out as a friend and a photoclub rep. I doubt she likes me.
"Kosuda...little tip: those who spend two hours talking to someone they just met are a little more than merely classmates. She likes you, trust me."
"I'm not ready to ditch. Surely Yamada can have another chance."
"Okay, fine. You don't have to leave her tomorrow, but promise me this: If she messes up again, and she will, after you put your best efforts into it simply leave her. She may threaten to leave you, don't flinch, be free. She may outright breakup with you, don't let it get you down. Ayumi likes you and you'd be great together. You've met a girl who has a lot of what you'd like. She's not perfect, nobody is, but she's a lot better than Yamada. So we have a deal now?"
"You sure about this? That I have a chance?"
"Absolutely. You have a great chance and while there are no guarantees with her...I guarantee you this with Yamada: You're not happy the way you are and unless things change for the better you're going to either leave her or she will leave you."
"Okay, she has one more chance."
"Attaboy Kosuda. Next time you'll see me with wide-eyes of wonder and cheer."
The following morning at homeroom Kosuda sat down next to Yamada and said hi, but she still couldn't look at him still. All she could do was shake.
Takeshita shook her head and pulled Kosuda aside saying, "She's still real embarrassed, tell her you're okay, and that everything is okay."
Kosuda went back to Yamada and gently took her hand and said, "Yamada please look at me. It's okay. I'm not looking at you in any worse light. We all make mistakes."
Yamada stopped shaking, took Kosuda's hand and turned towards him, but still couldn't speak. Kosuda smiled and sat down thinking things heading in the right direction when at that exact moment Ayumi entered the class. Ayumi gave Kosuda a smile and a small wave oblivious to Yamada's "significance" in his life. Akai-sensei introduced Ayami to the class and asked her say a few words about herself. Takeshita was already getting ready for a "Yamada reaction" as she saw her eyes aflame and face which shouted, "She must be destroyed!"
The instant class ended Yamada followed Kosuda into the hallway, grabbed him by his shirt, and shook him hard like she did in the woods after attacking him with an airgun.
Yamada shouted, "Do you know her?! I saw her wave! Are you two seeing each other!?"
Yamada's trademark scowl appeared strongly.
Kosuda was very frightened for a moment and then angrily said, "No! This is her first day in class, I met her yesterday at the photolab and I told her about club happenings."
"Don't play coy with me! Do you like her or something!?"
"Yamada, we just met yesterday. What's your problem?"
"Oh. Okay. Promise me that's all it is?" Yamada released his collar and calmed.
"Yes. Yes, geez what's your deal? A few moments ago you couldn't talk to me and now you're able to shout at me?"
Kosuda hugged her telling her to relax and released.
Yamada calmed and her trademark scowl disappeared and her trembling stopped as she hugged Kosuda back and said,"I'm just so embarrassed and on edge from what happened...my little ' gift' the other night."
Yamada looked at him with a weak smile.
Kosuda smiled and said, "What 'gift'?"
Yamada kissed him, hugged him tighter, and Kosdua said with a funny smile she must have dreamed something the other might.
Meanwhile back in the classroom everyone saw what just took place. Misato looked at Ayami, laughed, and said, "You're gonna wanna avoid that one. Don't get on her bad side."
Ayami looked at Misato confused and said, "Who are you, who is that, and what just happened?"
Misato,"Who am I? I'm Misato and that is Yamada, the prettiest girl at the school...and Kosuda's girlfriend. She thinks Kosuda likes you. Do you like him?!"
Ayami looked at Misato's wide eyes, said they'd only met yesterday, and barely know each other. Secretly, at a sub-conscious level Ayumi liked Kosuda a great deal...and the same went for Kosuda. At this moment all that was stopping the two of them from getting together was however Yamada would act in the near future.
As school was ending and everyone was heading for the doors Ayumi caught up with Kosuda and started talking to him about the next time the dark room would be open and Kosuda told her they could use it tomorrow when the club does inventory.
Yamada came around the corner as she saw the two of them with Ayumi simply saying, "Great see you tomorrow, can't wait."
Nothing is better than not getting information out of context and it is especially bad when dealing with tense emotional situations.
Kosuda started to say something when Yamada ran over to him and in a flash and shook him pretty hard demanding to know what they were talking about.
Ayumi gently said, "Please, let him go. He's just talking about us meeting at the photoclub tomorrow to use the dark room Yamada. There's no reason to be-"
Yamada looked at Ayumi and shouted, "Who the hell are you and how the hell do you know my name?! This doesn't concern you!"
"I'm Ayumi, Misato told me your name, and it does concern me seeing as how you're interrupting us."
"What!? I don't know who you think you are and what's going on, but stay away from my boyfriend!"
A few students had formed around them and more were coming in sensing a cat-fight. Japan, as most of the world, has a thing when two females could possibly fight and it demands attention.
Kosuda thought to himself, " 'Boyfriend'? Is that a title I want when she is acting like this?"
"I was merely saying I was looking forward to using the 'dark room' with him tomorrow after the club leaves."
Yamada's eyes turned to flame hearing the phrase 'dark room' feeling her territory was being invaded.
"You're using 'the dark room' with him?! The hell you are!"
Yamada grabbed Ayumi by her shirt collar and started shaking her.
Aymui started to cough and said, "Let go of me. Let go of me please."
Yamada was infuriated, "Let go of you?! Why? What are you going to do about it?!"
Ayumi started coughing a little harder.
A sizable crowd had form around them and the guys started to meow and growl feeling a cat-fight was impenitent. A few girls even hissed.
Ayumi continued to cough and it was getting worse and said with more conviction, "Let go of me! I'm warning you: Let go of me now."
Yamada was shocked. She felt she was being insulted by the girl who was a little smaller than her who she felt stood no chance against her and didn't let go.
Yamada shook a little harder and said, "Yeah? What are you gonna do if I don't let-"
Ayumi's fist landed hard on the left side of Yamada's face causing her to let go and fall to the ground.
The crowd cheered and many gasped as Yamada didn't move for a moment, but then quickly got up, and was restrained by Takesthita along with some other girls. Ayumi stopped coughing, growled, breathed heavily while heaving, balled both of her fists, and her eyes turned so angry no one would approach to restrain her. Her eyes seemed to look like fire and she said, "Let her come."
Kosuda was shocked, impressed, and plead with Ayumi not to pursue the fight. Ayumi quickly softened her stance, stood by him, and smiled.
Akai-sensei came into the hallway and pushed students aside and saw still Yamada being restrained looking like she was ready to charge and Ayumi standing in front of her and said, "Okay! Who started this?! Who threw the first punch?"
Several students jumped in saying it was Yamada who accosted Ayumi and was roughing her up despite warnings to stop. Akai-sensei looked at Yamada who wasn't saying a word, eager to resume fighting, and then to Ayumi.
In a calming voice Ayumi said, "I struck her first." The sensei quickly told both girls to come to the principle's office with her now. As they were led away the crowd cheered and some applauded. Many ran up to Ayumi saying she was awesome, her actions amazing, and some guys even asked her out. While smiling she was in shock more than anything else.
That evening Kosuda got an angry call from Yamada demanding to know why he didn't wait for her to be done with detention. Kosuda said she hasn't been answering phone calls, texts, and gave him no time as to how long she'd be. Yamada sighed and said, "Whatever." Kosuda shook it off and said he felt she was being a little unfair to him and she just said that she was cross at the world and they'd talk tomorrow. Kosuda realized that he wasn't apologized to or asked if he wanted to talk, but just decided to let it go.
Wednesday morning came and Ayumi ran into Kosuda on the way to first period class when one of the girls in class who felt she the toughest girl in school stopped Ayumi and grabbed her by her collar. People told the girl that Ayumi didn't do anything, to stop, and even Yamada plead with her not to do anything.
Ayumi started coughing while being shaken, felt nothing but resentment and said, "Let go! What did I do!?"
The girl sneered and saw her coughing and grabbed Ayumi's wrists and shook harder. Ayumi started coughing harder.
Ayumi looked sadly at Kosuda who was about to intervene when Ayumi said, "You have a good grip on my wrists? You think you've got me restrained? Let me go now or hold on tighter."
The girl said, "You can't strike me when I have you can't move your hands. What are you gonna-"
Ayumi looked sad, grabbed the girls's wrists, held on tight, and pulled her in hard lowering her head at the same time. The strike knocked the girl back with her nose bleeding a lot.
The girl landed on the floor hard and people gasped.
Ayumi once again breathed heavily, this time shaking a little, growled, balled both fists, and had a look of anger which again made no one come to restrain her.
Ayumi shouted with some tears standing over the girl, "Stay down! You made me do this! You could have let go, you could have avoided it, but you didn't. Why?! Anyone else?! Anyone else have a problem with me?!" No one moved.
Kosuda's friend nudged him and he walked over to Ayumi and again plead with her to calm down. Ayumi smiled, released her body's tense fighting pose, and held Kosuda's arm feeling safe.
Once again people cheered, Miyano came over and gave her tissues for her tears with her friends all smiling at her, and some other girls said they'd be happy to walk at her side at all times lest someone else be stupid. Ayumi thanked everyone and just said she didn't want to hurt that girl. Everyone understood seeing she too was warned. A few more guys asked her out saying she was really amazing. Ayumi just smiled at Kosuda and pulled him closer.
The teacher came out fully knowing what had to have happened this time, picked up the girl with the clearly broken nose, said to go the nurse's office, took Ayumi who held onto Kosuda's arm tightly, aside and said, "I am not sure what that was all about, but I am sure you didn't start it. Why don't the two of you wait in the classroom until things cool down out here?"
At the end of the day the photoclub met and did their normal counting of supplies. Ayumi joined Kosuda along with some other members using the darkroom. All the guys were proud of Ayumi and asked what was making her cough. Ayumi just said it was a respiratory condition she had and had to avoid being shaken as it could exacerbate things. The guys asked if she was always such a tough girl and she said not always, but was made to become one fast as people seemed to find it funny to shake her. All the guys in the club said it was immature and unforgivable to act that way and the girls said no one will harm one of their members as long as they were there. She smiled and said she was happy to be among them. The club finished their developing and some started to walk to the nature park to enjoy the sun when the other club members said they need to take her photo to put on the wall of members. She blushed a little and said only if Kosuda stood with her. The members all smiled knowing she had a huge bond with Kosuda and clearly liked him even if she didn't know it. Yamada came to the photoclub's room and found everyone gone when a custodian said they were all heading to the park. Yamada set out to the park to talk to Kosuda & Ayumi and apologize for the other day when she saw the two together having pictures taken. When Ayumi stood next to Kosuda, even without any contact, and smiled for a picture Yamada didn't take kindly to it and ran over to and demanded to know what's going on.
"What are you doing with Ayumi? Do you like her or something?! You're supposed to be my boyfriend!" Yamada angrily said.
Ayumi's stance changed and she balled her fists when Kosuda calmly said it was okay. Kosuda said he would take care of this and Ayumi once again smiled, calmed, and walked to join the other members who stood close to her.
"We're taking her photo to put on our wall of members. Chill out. I like her as a photography club-member and classmate. She's nice, but I am your boyfriend. What is with you lately? I thought you were calming down. I even saw you stand up for Ayumi trying to stop the fight. I really thought well of you at that moment," Kosuda responded.
Kosuda went onto say that he was happy for how she was acting before, but didn't like her increasingly jealous nature. He looked at his fellow club-members who all nodded.
Yamada pulled Kosuda aside, "Look, I'm feeling better, but I don't want you hanging around Ayumi anymore."
Kosuda was beside himself, "What?! She's a member of the club. She will be here a lot. Are you asking me to give up on photography club?"
Yamada calmed a little and pleadingly said, "Kosuda I love you, but it is the club or me. I've seen the way she looks at you, how she clings to you, and how you let her. You clearly have something between the two of you whether or not you admit it or know it."
Kosuda, "You're asking me to chose between my club and you!? Seriously?!"
The club members all shook their heads slowly.
Kosuda shook his head, "Then I chose my club, friends, and the joys they both bring me. I am sorry Yamada."
Yamada looked shocked, stormed off, and Ayumi took Kosuda's hand and smiled warmly.
The following month saw Ayumi and Kosuda sitting near each other in class, sometimes holding hands, never gratuitously, and she would hold him tightly locking his arm in the hallway. Kosuda spent time together with Ayumi taking photos, using the 'dark room' together, and met Ayumi's family one Friday afternoon as they picked her up at school. Her family were very happy to meet Kosuda asked what his favorite meal was saying they'd love to have him over next Friday. The following Friday saw Kosuda, while nervous at times, really impress Ayumi's parents, and siblings. They were impressed with his photography skills and involvement with the school library to help keep things in order saving the school money, Yamada had quit doing it...only to be replaced by Ayumi. The following night Ayumi met Kosuda's family and impressed them and Kuzuki especially saying she needs to see her brother's large telephoto lens which extends quite far with a devilish smile causing her to blush and Kosuda's parents to ask if she was okay.
Yamada did the best she could to avoid being angry at the situation. Her Voodoo doll and witchcraft kit were long gone. Getting the better of herself she stopped Kosuda and Ayumi in the hall as school started one morning and asked them to listen a moment.
Yamada, "Guys...I need to talk to you. Please give me a moment."
Ayumi smiled and Kosuda politely asked, "Yes, Yamada? What is it?"
Yamada paused, started to say something, stopped, winced, and opened her mouth again without being able to say anything, and just froze up.
Kosuda looked on bewildered and Ayumi smiled and said politely, "Go ahead Yamada, you can say it."
Yamada said, "I am so SORRY! I am sorry for what I said Kosuda, I am sorry for what I did, I am sorry for telling you that you couldn't spend time with her, and I am sorry for making you chose between your friends, your club, and me. It was wrong of me. Will you forgive me?"
Ayumi looked to Kosuda with a somewhat intense look waiting for his reaction.
Kosuda, "...You're forgiven. Come on Ayumi, let's get a can of juice before home room."
Both girls snapped and said at the same time, "What?!"
Kosuda looked at Ayumi and said he wanted to get a juice and that'd like her to join him. Ayumi gave Yamada the same level of shock she gave him at his quick exchange. The two walked away.
"Kosuda...that wasn't very nice. I expect better from you." Ayumi said.
"Why? I accepted her apology. What else did you want me to say?"
"Seriously Kosuda she made mistakes, we all do, and yes she acted in a harsh and pretty dark way making you chose between your friends, the club, and her. She felt threatened, she had a desire to be with you as strong as a forest fire, and I know she still does. However, as a fellow photographer you know that even the darkest negative can show beautiful light when it develops."
"What? Why do you care about how she feels? She's my ex. I was civil to her. What else should I have done?"
"Kosuda...I expect better from you. I know you better than that. I dare say I know you better than you know yourself and you are a lot nicer than that. You don't have to take her back, but if I weren't next to you I am sure you'd have been a lot nicer. Just remember what I said, please."
Kosuda said he would and she held him closer as they walked.
One Saturday evening Yamada learned Kosuda was seen with Ayumi heading to the "love hotel" district. She learned of this because she was following them. She later saw the two of them exiting one with Kosuda as red as a pomegranate and Ayumi smiling ear to ear. Yamada just fumed as she walked through the district almost hoping to solicited, but no one dared get too close to her with her eyes aflame.
Ayumi wasn't in class Monday or Tuesday and Yamada had a lull to cool down. Unfortunately she never stays down too long and on Wednesday morning in the hallway Takeshita felt Yamada grab her on the arm slowing her down. She knew exactly Yamada was going to say.
Yamada started, "Takeshita! What does-"
Takeshita, "Let me guess: 'What does he see in her'?"
Yamada looked shocked and asked how she knew she was going to ask that. Takeshita shook her head and said she knew she'd ask that sooner or later.
Takesthita continued, "You were about to say: 'What does he see in her? I don't understand it. What does he like about her?' Well, let's see...she is kind to him, never pulls him like he's on a lead, she holds him close, shares interests with him, is sweet, is clearly comfortable around him, and also happens to be very pretty. I am don't know Yamada, what could he possibly see in her?"
Yamada shook her head angrily and Takeshita said Yamada should calm down and use this as a learning moment. She went onto say this was an opportunity to learn more about herself. Yamada wasn't listening to a word when she suddenly saw her Ayumi walking down the hall and started using a "Yamada-Eye" mode: Tactical analysis. She started scanning her over bodily dimensions and other factors. She followed her down the hallway leaving Taskeshita alone without saying a word. Takeshita said quietly while rolling her eyes, "Wait, come back, whatever you're thinking or doing won't turn out well. Stop..." Takesthita walked away shaking her head.
Ayumi walked around the corner and entered the girl's room and Yamada turned the corner and went to push the door open. Before Yamada realized what was going on Ayumi grabbed her forearm and pulled her inside hard. Ayumi quickly locked the door, released Yamada who was shaking, and said in a serious voice, "We need to talk."
Yamada still was shaking and Ayumi said to relax.
Yamada still shaken up asked, "How...how did you know it was me behind you?"
"I knew you were watching me. I could feel your eyes. I try to be ready for the next person who wants to get a laugh by shaking me, but that won't be a problem for much longer."
Yamada looked at her having calmed a little and asked what did she need to talk to her about.
Ayumi said, "I need you to pay close attention: I know you love Kosuda, I know you love him very much, and are literally ready to fight to keep him, but you're going about this the wrong way. I need you. I need you to do something for me and I don't have a lot of time."
Yamada, "What? What are you talking about? Why weren't you here the last two days?"
Ayumi, "I caught that cold going around."
"What cold going around?"
"Never mind. Look-my time here is limited and I need your help. I don't have long, you've got to be better, and be there for Kosuda when I'm not here. It will be painful as we care deeply for one another."
"You're not going to be here much longer? What do you mean? How long do you have?"
"That's not your concern."
"Does Kosuda know?"
"That's none of your business. What is your business is that I am not your enemy, I'm going to be your 'Obiwan Kenobe'."
"Huh? Who's 'Ooobewan Ken-"
"Obi-...never mind. Do you know the difference between a 'friend' and an 'enemy'? A friend tells you what you want to hear, an enemy what you need to hear. I am neither, I am your 'frenemy' -and I'm going to help you."
"With what?"
"I said it before: I need you to be supportive when I'm gone...and it won't be too long before I am. I am going to help you get better so when I am not here Kosuda has someone who cares about him, who will be there for him, and have this person be someone he loves. You are clearly the best choice, but you need some help."
"You're helping me? You want me to 'win' him back from you?"
"I don't want you to win, I don't want him to lose."
"Aren't you scared I may take him back before you go?"
"No, not in the least. You know why?"
"Why?"
"Because the way you are right now you're no threat to me."
Ayumi unlocked the door and told Yamada to get out, tell no one of what happened, and they'd talk again later. Yamada walked down the hall in a daze meeting up with Taskeshita who asked what was wrong and Yamada didn't know what to say.
Takesthita, "Well there aren't any fresh marks on you so I know she didn't strike you. You are dazed so it is clear you learned something or said something, or were told something. You always are happy to boast what you said if you like it...something was told to you. Something you can't handle...you can't even understand it."
Yamada nodded with a partial look of fear and bewilderment. Takeshita decided not to pursue and said to come to her with any thoughts if she wanted to and entered class. At the end of the day Ayumi found Yamada walking outside on the way home and waited until she was alone on the street and quietly stopped her by taking her arm and said it was time. Yamada was surprised, she didn't hear her approaching but didn't jump, and asked what was really going on. Ayumi took Yamada by the arm and led her the other way and no longer to her apartment and began talking to her with her first lesson.
Ayumi cleared her throat, "Yamada, tell me Kosuda's favorite movie, food, tv show, book, and what kind of camera he uses. Also, before you answer, tell me his birthday."
Yamada of course admitted she didn't know any of it.
Ayumi looked at her with a look of sadness knowing on some level that would be her response.
Ayumi asked, "What do you know about him?"
Yamada thought hard and said, "Well I know he likes photography, knows he likes to take nature shots especially. He feels 'even nature moves' and doesn't feel people are as expressive...as strange as that sounds. He even was taking pictures of the stars just for me once. He likes taking photos for various school events. It's because of his love of it I got a camera and a tripod. I felt it would be great to join him in a hobby of his and look to find new ones together I suppose."
Ayumi was pleased and said it was a great start and asked what happened. Yamada started turning as red as the sun.
Ayumi, "Uh oh...I'm starting to see what's going on. I am starting to 'get the picture.' You...you did something which embarrassed you-a lot and it has something to do with photography. Oh god! You did something compromising. You did something horrible. Did you take nude photos of yourself and give them to him as a gift only to take them back?! Maybe with a huge and dramatic exit?! This then led to a lot of tension until some random event set you off...possibly the entrance of a new woman in the picture causing you to feel threatened? Maybe this woman even likes photography."
"How...how the hell did you know all that?! Did Kosuda tell you?! Oh my God! Are you able to read people like a book? Did news spread about school?! Does everyone know something?!"
"Calm down, relax. The truth? I am psychic! No, I am kidding. I could say something like 'I didn't know until you told me' or that I simply deduced it like a criminal pyschologist, but the truth is you're not that hard to figure out. I just figured, mainly, that since your desire to do photography came to a sudden stop and you were embarrassed you must have done something rash without any judgment. I have a character reference or two about you. The rest is basic human behavior. I could have surmised you took photos of the two of your nude and you wanted them back or that you suggested photographing the two of you in the act, or the like-it is like I said I have a good character reference on you. Okay: Good news and bad news. The good news? You have in you the desire and follow-through to find a common activity to enjoy. The bad news is while you have the drive of a 18-wheeler you have the judgement of a child. You need to harness that power and better focus or direct it. Sounds simple right? It is simple, but not easy."
"Okay...how do I go about doing this?"
"I want you to write a list down of your interests...I am sure you have at least three-we have already covered two of them. Find me the PG-rated ones. I heard you're a cheerleader...do you like any sports of your own? Maybe one you could enjoy watching together? Do you like any kind of museum? TV show? Music? I heard you play the recorder-do you have interests in learning any other instrument...maybe one with a lot more need for proper action by the mouth, skills and strength which need to be developed?"
Yamada thought and thought and realized there was more to her that she didn't know than she did. She raced through her mind and while many ideas came to her mind they were fleeting and she couldn't focus on any one thing. Yamada suddenly found herself in a daze of thought and couldn't see anything in front of her other than imagery. Ayumi pat her shoulder asking if she was okay and then said it was clear she was thinking hard and to go home.
Yamada sat at the kitchen table drinking coco kola and didn't seem to be seeing what was in front of her. Chika came in and asked if she was okay. There was no response and Chika actually went over and moved her hand in front of her causing her to come out of her daze. Yamada's little sister surmised something was deeply on her mind and likely wasn't school. Chika's latest boyfriend came around the corner and said goodbye and Yamada's eyes followed the guy longingly as he left.
"You're worried about Kosuda aren't you? You want him back and not for that reason right?" she asked, but really it was a statement.
"Yes, yes I am. Am I that easy to read?" Yamada asked with a scowl.
"Relax. You're in a room with me, alone, and one other person enters and your expression changes. It's not that hard to figure out. That and you're my sister."
"I guess. Chika I would ask you for advice, but I am not even sure what the advice I seek would be on exactly. I don't know what to even ask."
Chika pulled up a chair and said she even understood how she felt. She said more than once a guy would lose her or she'd leave him only to have that person come back learning something was missing/being longed for and awakened emotions later.
"You know what they said, 'It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all'."
Yamada gave her a harsh look and said, "Really? That's what you're going to say to me."
Chika smiled, "No, I was trying to lighten the mood. Listen, things will get better. Maybe you'll win him back...but you need to change. I wish I could tell you how though."
Yamada resumed her thinking and took out a piece of paper from her bag and honestly and earnestly started writing down things which provided some amount of curiosity and interest. She worked intensely and was proud of herself. She worked so hard her mother had to tell her it was dinner time and she quickly scrambled and helped set the table. Chika noticed Yamada helping with the table and gave a little nod as Yamada didn't even flinch to help out someone without being asked.
The following morning Ayumi waited around the corner from Yamda's house and gasped when she saw her. Ayumi said not to worry and she'd not been waiting long and that it was critical they spoke today. Through a few tears Ayumi told Yamada her time here is being cut short and she has even less time to work with her. Yamada again asked what was really going on and Ayumi said she'd let her know when the time was right and to now just focus on the time they had. The two walked to school while Yamada told Ayumi her thoughts on interests, how much she missed Kosuda, and even felt a weird kind of peace.
"It's weird really. I am in pain, I am sad, and yet I am not in tears. I cried at first and it still hurts, but I am starting to feel at home with it. I don't know. Does that sound strange?" Yamada asked.
"No, not really. It just means acceptance. I know that all too well. Sometimes once we feel we have nothing left to lose we can face anything. There is nothing left to lose so there is nothing left to worry about, nothing more to fear. There is a peace in that for sure," Ayumi responded.
Friday afternoon Ayumi caught up with Yamada and told her that Kosuda believes she will be away on Saturday and it is really important they talk on Saturday and that she'd meet her in the nature park by school. Saturday morning came and Yamada waited and she never showed. A half-hour passed, then 45 minutes, and then an hour. Yamada would have waited longer if a member of the club showed up or called telling her she was, but decided to head home. Yamada thought of texting Kosuda to get contact information for Ayumi, but she knew she couldn't. Yamada began to worry and spent the weekend reviewing her answers and thoughts and told Takeshita she was too busy studying, but not what subject, to come out this weekend.
Monday morning came and saw a haggard Ayumi walking into class. Yamada motioned quickly for her to join her in the hallway and she followed. Yamada, clearly worried, asked why she didn't show up.
Ayumi responded softly, "I am okay, I just got that cold going around."
Yamada looked her over with growing concern and asked, "What cold going around?"
Ayumi had a slight looked of sadness, but simply said she was sorry she missed her on Saturday and said they'd talk during lunch to meet her by the stairway at near the photolab and go onto the roof. During lunch the two talked as friends would and enjoyed their lunches and Yamada gave her thoughts and Ayumi feedback and told her that Kosuda recently developed a huge love for corn muffins, toasted with butter, as a breakfast and said to remember that.
Yamada and Ayumi walked together towards Yamada's apartment building while her gave her thoughts and what she'd come up with on paper. Ayumi said they sounded great and with some happiness said she thought she was making great progress & suggested returning her digital and get a store credit and getting a proper camera if she intends to really enjoy the hobby on different levels. Yamada ran inside and came out with the box, receipt, and camera. Together they headed to the mall camera shop and after returning the digital one got a nice used SLR camera, case, and a nice strap. As they left the owner stopped Ayumi and thanked her for helping her recent sale get sold so fast.
Wednesday afternoon Yamada saw Ayumi walking alone and caught up with her quiet area and said she had an invitation for later. Ayumi smiled, thanked her, and asked what it was and Yamada smiled simply saying to walk with towards Kosuda's after school. Ayumi was surprised, but decided to see where this was headed and later Yamada took her to the shrine she and Kosuda prayed at for new wishes in the year. The two exchanged stories of their life with tales of joy, sadness, embarrassment, and hopes. Ayumi took extra care in listening to what Yamada came up with as possible interests, made suggestions, and said she felt she was ready to approach things anew. Yamada told Ayumi the whole story of what happened Christmas partly thinking she knew, partly because she felt it wouldn't matter if she was leaving, and lastly out of trust and humor. The two sat on a nearby bench sharing laughs at the entire story. Ayumi said parts of the Christmas party had to be exaggerated when Yamada said they happened exactly as described. Yamada finished with what she felt must be told: the lunge in the bathroom and a second ambulance arrival. The two laughed especially and when they stopped laughing each felt they'd actually become friends on some level or at the very least come to an understanding. Ayumi stood to leave, thanked her for bringing her there, and said it was imperative they speak again the following night. Wednesday & Thursday seemed to pass in a blur and on Friday evening, very discreetly by Uber, Yamada visited with Ayumi's family. It was a happy occasion and her parents and siblings were happy to meet this good friend she'd made outside the photoclub they'd heard so much about and were especially grateful she'd come tonight on short notice. Yamada was very confused, but did her best to act normally. Her parents served some light fare and said they were leaving early in the morning to fly Los Angeles. Ayumi thanked Yamada saying it was due to her she'd come to grips with leaving all too soon. After Ayumi's family all said goodnight she took Yamada outside in the dark and through many tears and explained the reasons she was leaving. Yamada signaled for an Uber to come, hugged Ayumi tight, and Ayumi said in a moment she's calling Kosuda.
"Promise me...promise me you'll go to the photolab tomorrow morning at be there at 6AM for a special event. It's imperative you are there at 6AM."Ayumi said struggling not to cry.
"Of course...of course I will," Yamada said patting her back trying to console her.
Ayumi hugged Yamada hard and Yamada returned it holding her like she'd known her all her life and both burst into tears. The Uber rolled up and took a still crying Yamada off into the night. Putting her hand into her jacket she realized Ayumi had slipped in an ornate wax-sealed envelope with a fancy emblem. On the front it simply said "For Kosuda."
Friday morning came and Yamada awoke to an early alarm and prepared to leave when Chika caught her and asked why she was up so early. Yamada simply said she had a promise to keep and left. Yamada made a stop at a local bakery and arrived at the school just as it was being opened by the custodians. Yamada made her way to the photolab expecting to see the club there for a going away party, but in her heart of hearts she knew what would happen when she knocked on the door.
Yamada took a deep breath and knocked on the door to the lab and found the door unlocked. Yamada furtively entered the lab and called out to Kosuda and saw him with his arm stretched out against the wall as the sun was starting to rise with his head down. His cell phone was still lit up showing he'd just received a phone call.
With hesitation Yamada simply said, "Kosuda..."
In a voice resigned to hard news and without looking up Kosuda responded, "She's gone Yamada..."
Yamada simply said, "I know...I'm so sorry. She asked me to give this to you and whatever it is it is surely for your eyes only."
Kosuda took the envelope and said it was beautiful and opened the seal. Inside was a note and a single photo negative. Kosuda read the note, took the negative, and placed it into the developing tank. He came back clearly shaken and asked what Yamada had brought and she said it was for him and he through some tears thanked her for the corn muffin saying it was really good. Once finished with his muffin Kosuda he went back to the tank, took out the negative, rinsed it, put it under the enlarger to see what it was, and gasped at what he saw spelled out on an ornate piece of paper. In beautiful characters was written:
"Even the darkest negative can show beautiful light when it develops"
Kosuda came outside from behind the curtain into the room where Yamada stood with tender eyes looking at him and began to cry.
Yamada asked if he wanted to talk.
"Yes, yes I would," Kosuda said as he hugged Yamada and held on tight without saying a word. Yamada patted his back and hugged back almost scared to let go. Kosuda took her hand and simply said to please hold it as the sun rises. Yamada did and together they stood as the sun crawled over the horizon and each saw a plane flying across the sky heading west over them.
Yamada stood still, smiled a little the best she could at Kosuda, and he smiled back.
Once the sun had risen and Kosuda had dried his tears and released Yamada's hands she again looked at him with tender eyes still giving a small smile.
Yamada said in a gentle voice, "Would you like me to stay here by your side?"
Kosuda responded with a hopeful voice, "Yes, yes I would. Stay with me and don't let go."
They gazed towards the sun together as it illuminated the dark grounds with beautiful light.
