Chapter 2
The thing about species with advanced technology, be they human or alien, is they always assume they are on top. That the yawning blackness of the universe can be categorized and controlled, when all their comprehensions of the reality in front of them are but children's games scratching the surface of the even more unfeeling chaos that lies in directions and dimensions without assigned designations.
Such was the hubris of the Leviathan aliens, who embarked on a mission to reawaken the Master of Darkness, Gatanothor, from the underwater tomb city R'lyeh. In almost two decades since the Monster War, at the climax of which H.E.A.T. broke the extraterrestrials' mental dominion over Earth's monsters and had their invasion fleet crushed by the very same creatures, the aliens had waited for another opportunity to make the planet their own.
They calculated, in the future times they now lived in, their ascension was assured. A world that saw the return and apparent destruction of Gatanothor. Where Ultraman Tiga lost his power after putting Gatanothor to sleep. A world where Godzilla lived no more.
Witless.
Once the Mimic's blue-purple protoplasm touched the remnant of the dark god's shell, the Master of Darkness bubbled back into physical wholeness.
The aliens were correct. There would be no protectors to save the humans. Not Tiga, not H.E.A.T., and not Godzilla.
But there would be nothing to protect the aliens from Gatanothor either.
Gatanothor chopped through their mind control signal like a tsunami, splintering the minds of the operators on the other end.
The Master of Darkness spread its namesake mist across the four corners of the globe (how simple these lifeforms were, believing corners existed). In the Amazon River, it reconnected the Mimic's biomass to the undestroyed atoms of the Mimic and its mate left in the water, the bulk unzipped and incinerated by H.E.A.T.'s nitric acid harpoon and Godzilla's atomic breath.
Reproducing infinite copies, it dispersed fear and depression among humans and aliens alike, dividing its consciousness throughout the offspring and moulding them into clones of kaiju killed on Earth's soil, including Godzilla.
A new Monster War spilled off the Earth and into the galaxy.
One small rock.
Many small rocks.
Gradually, the stars themselves went out.
Hubris.
The petrification of all.
