This is an alternate ending scene for "A Motive for Murder," the first episode of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, the charming little series starring Geoffrey Whitehead Holmes and Donald Pickering as Watson and created by Sheldon Reynolds. Partially inspired by the first episode what's basically the same series, Sherlock Holmes, which is also charming and also written by Sheldon Reynolds.
"You were wrong about one thing, you know," Watson said as he shelved his heavy medical books and journals.
"Yes, though I confess I only saw it when you took out our murderer last night."
"Hmm?"
"It was in the way you set yourself to fight. The bullet was in your leg. But it wasn't as crippling as the bullet in your shoulder," Holmes replied.
"It was the bullet from my shoulder," Watson admitted sheepishly.
"Hmm?"
"I was leaning over a patient. The shooter was above me. The bullet went through my shoulder and embedded itself in my leg. It didn't do too much damage compared to my shoulder, but when the weather gets cold and as I age I'll need a cane."
"Your eyes still tell me you've been ill," Holmes said softly. He was glad to learn about his new fellow lodger who he already liked so much, but was afraid of offending him.
"Yes. The base hospital at Peshawar is a terrible place. Too many patients and not enough doctors. Half the people there fall to enteric fever. I was no exception, especially after being shot. I laid insensible for months before being sent home."
"I see."
"You do? Do you, I mean, will you still want me? As a roommate? I mean, if you want someone to help with your cases you may need to consider…"
"Doctor."
"Yes?"
"I hope you don't mind if I ask you along on more cases from now on. I admit having you by my side was invaluable, and I'd prefer no one else. Would that bother you? Or would my constantly going in and out to solve murders bother you? If so perhaps you should…"
"Holmes."
"Yes?"
"I'd be honored."
"Well, that's that then." He smiled brilliantly at his new friend. "Here, put those books down. I'll finish shelving them, you get that trunk unpacked. Shoulder wounds can be nasty things."
