You Were Born To Do This Chpt 2
A/N: Hello everyone! I'm back again with another chapter here. With the way I'm feeling about this fic, I think I may be able to get a chapter out every week or so, although don't quote me on that cuz you lot know what I'm like. But I'll try my best to keep uploading, even if not many people read this cuz I'm just doing this for fun. Anyways, as always, if you are enjoying this and would like to see more why not give it a favourite and a little review as I love reading what you guys think about my work. Cya!
Garrus stood frozen in place for a few moments, not actually expecting Shepard to say yes to him. In his mind, it was an absolute long shot and there was no chance of even being able to stand on the same ship as a human, let alone joining a crew that was predominantly human. Even though The First Contact war was a few decades ago, tensions between both Humanity and Turians were still dangerously high, and the thought of even looking at each other disgusted some members of both species. Garrus didn't especially care for grudges and just viewed humans as he viewed other species, a life.
While mulling over all that, Garrus just stared into space, zoning out a little like Shepard's response didn't actually reach his ears.
"Hey? Anybody home?" Shepard began to wave her hand in front of the spaced-out Turian.
"O-Oh Uhm, yes ma'am!" Garrus stood to attention like he was in front of one of his superiors, completely forgetting where he was.
Shepard laughed a little bit, amused by his formal response. "It's okay Vakarian, calm down, stay with me"
"Right, sorry about that…" He placed a claw on the back of his neck and looked off to the side, completely embarrassed by his actions.
"Before we move on here, I gotta get a few things straight" The Commander's tone changed from laid-back to serious In an instant and it put Garrus on edge slightly. "I'm more than happy to have you on my team, someone with your experience would be a great asset for us. But do NOT think for a moment that because your moving to a different team means you can act reckless and show off, that's not the kind of soldier I need. If we are gonna do something, we get it done right, not fast, got it?"
Garrus didn't really know how to respond to this, he was still stunned by her sudden mood change. He did think before that if he was able to go about his investigation with another group, he would be able to do things his way and be able to catch Saren quickly. It was almost like she had read his mind. Also, the way she spoke, was almost paralyzing, like you were made to listen to what she had to say.
"Of course Commander, I hear you loud and clear" He replied, hardly able to disagree with what she said.
She stared into his eyes again, as if to try and sus out if he was lying or not. It was both uncomfortable and alluring at the same time. The vibrant blue that was probably the brightest thing about her face almost looked like they were glowing. As if once again, she changed her mood like nothing.
"Great! Glad we got that straightened out!" Garrus sighed as he let out the breath he was holding as she was happy with his response "Anyway back to what we're dealing with here, Dr. Michelle said that Fist hangs out around Flux nightclub was it?"
Garrus nodded "Yeah that's it, he owns the place. He's a slimy bastard, always bragging that he had the Shadow Broker behind his back. Whenever he does anything rash, we're made to look the other way. If he's now working with Saren, he's either extremely brave or extremely stupid."
"Got it. We'll go check it out" She pointed to the two humans behind her who didn't really say much but seemed to stare at Garrus a lot, almost like they didn't trust him at all. "While we do that, I want you to grab your gear and head up to the ship. She's called Normandy, you can't miss her. I'll also get Captain Anderson to radio your superiors and let them know about the change."
Garrus was stunned, they had only just met and she had already done just about all his work for him. He didn't realize she had this much influence in the Human military. Once again he still didn't know how to respond to her.
"That's… Incredible. I feel like I'm just gonna be a leech here if you have to do everything."
"Don't worry about it Vakarian, you can repay me by helping us take Saren down" Shepard assured him and started to move out with her squad "Go get your things, and ill see you back on the Normandy, 'll come by later and see how you're getting on"
"You got it Commander" Garrus saluted her as she left.
Once she left, Garrus made sure that Dr. Michelle was alright and told her just to stay here as more officers were on the way. Once he made sure everything was as it should be, he left the clinic, using his soon-to-be null CSEC access to lock the door behind him. As he made his way back to his squad car, he still couldn't believe it was that easy that he would get another chance, perhaps it was fate that she came around at the same time. Just like that, his mind had switched back to her. She was just so much different from other humans, at least from experience in Garrus' eyes. She just felt so approachable once you start talking to her, he half expected her to be a Xenophobic asshole like most human generals. But, she was the complete opposite, she was so welcoming and treated him as if he was a soldier like any other human. He jumped into the vehicle and put it on auto-pilot to go back to the precinct. He stared out the window, contemplating something else. On top of her coming around at the perfect time for him, he knows for a fact that it was definitely her that he saw in his dream, but surely that was impossible. How could he have predicted something like that? Also, he didn't know why but, every time he looked at her his heart would begin to beat faster and his chest close up a little bit. Why did he feel like this? He had felt similar feelings before for girls back home before he left for the military, but even then they never really amounted to anything, maybe a drunken night or two in bed but even that. Even though it had all the signs, he didn't want to believe that he was falling for a human, and a superior officer at that, but at the same time the fact that she was human, made his heart race even more and his mandibles start to click against his faceplates.
While lost in his thoughts, he hadn't even realized he was back. He sighed and jumped out of the car, locking it behind him. He knew that all hell was gonna break lose when he went back inside but this time, he really couldn't give two fucks what anyone said now. He went through the doors silently, hoping that he would perhaps be able to avoid any kind of confrontation with any fellow officers over his resignation as it had most likely already reached them. He went to the dressing areas where his locker was, opening it. He pulled out the spare change of underclothes he keeps in case he needed to change and other things like some empty deodorant cans that he never bothered to put in the trash. He put everything he wanted to keep in a zip bag and the rest into the trash just as he was about to walk out, but the locker door got his attention, there was something stuck to it. It was some kind of note, he took it off and unfolded it. He stared at the bit of paper and felt a little choked up inside. The note had a large 'Goodbye' in the middle and all of his friend's signatures and little comments all around it. 'We'll miss you buddy', 'Give them hell man', 'You got this brother', 'Once you've saved the galaxy, make sure you don't forget about us okay?'.
He had no idea that everyone believed in him from the start, he just assumed that everyone thought he was crazy. He clicked his mandibles happily as he folded the note back up and slid it inside his armor as he made his way out. He made his way down the hallway till he got to the front door when he heard someone saying his name from behind him
"Garrus, wait a second!" His CO shouted down the hall as he walked towards him.
Garrus grumbled internally, knowing for sure that he was about to get reprimanded and this time he wouldn't put up with any shit. He got ready to shout back as his CO started talking again.
"Before you go," He said as they stood in front of each other "I just want to say… good luck to you"
Well, that was unexpected…
"You were a great officer and you'll be sadly missed here. I know we never really saw eye to eye with one another and were always butting heads, but just know out there that everyone here is behind you." The officer almost looked a little sad to see him go.
Garrus didn't think anything else needed to be said. He stood up straight and saluted his captain, who also did the same. They put their arms down and nodded at one another, showing a final sign of respect before Garrus turned around and made his way out of the front door.
Walking out that door, while it was easy to do, was one of the biggest mental battles he has ever had. He was about to leave his job, one that his father was proud of him for, to go searching across the galaxy for a madman. If this didn't work out, things could go south fast, he may even wind up dead. Garrus shook these thoughts from his mind quickly, he couldn't afford to be having second thoughts now. He began his route back home, he had to drop all his things off there and tidy up a bit before leaving. He didn't know how Shepard was getting on, he didn't want to ping her on her Omni-tool just in case she was in a heated situation. He jogged home quickly and went inside, turning his lights on and setting his bag down on the floor. He only wanted to bring a few things with him as he knew what military life is like and he couldn't just bring whatever he wanted, not that he had much of value anyway. He picked up some essentials, a change of clothes, extra batteries for his visor, and so on. He then noticed a picture he had in a frame on his shelf, it was a picture of his dad, sister, and himself. It was the only thing he had to remind him of his family, they were all he had in his life, so he felt the need to take it with him. Once he had emptied the contents of his back and refiled it with his essentials, he slung it over his shoulder and started to walk away. He turned back and stared inside one last time as it might be the last time he sees it, accepting the fate the lay before him. He walked out one last time and locked the door.
Garrus could feel his heart beating in his chest, all these mixed emotions were getting to him, but he knew there was no turning back. He steeled his resolve, filling himself with confidence as he called a cab through his Omni-tool to take him to the ship port…
After he was dropped off and had made his way through customs, he was on the lookout for this ship. He didn't know how he was gonna find it, he completely forgot to ask where they docked, although his worries were short-lived. He looked up out the large glass windows they had at the shipyard so people could watch the arrivals and departures and found what he was looking for. A few levels above him was an Alliance frigate docked, it looked large, sleek, and sexy while also reminiscing of some Turian ships that Garrus had served on before. The huge giveaway for him though was the name Normandy plastered on the side of the ship, now he understood why Shepard said he wouldn't miss it. He made his way to the upper floors and arrived at Normandy's docking bay, which unsurprisingly was guarded by Alliance soldiers. Garrus walked up to the humans, thinking he would just be able to walk past, boy was he wrong
The humans stepped in front of him, blocking him off from the ship. "Hey now, where do you think you're going? Turian" one of them piped up.
Here we go again…
"I'm Garrus Vakarian, Commander Shepard's has authorized me to be part of the crew. Is there a problem?" he failed to see why he wasn't being allowed on board
"Uh yeah there's a problem, The Commander would never do that. Wanna know why? Cuz we don't let filthy aliens on our ships. Now get lost freak before we put a bullet in your head" The other guard said mockingly, pushing Garrus back with the butt of his rifle.
Garrus was fuming, about to reach down to pull out his old sidearm that he put away in his bag until he heard a familiar voice booming from behind him
"That's enough, both of you!" Garrus bolted around, wanting to know who was there
Shepard was staring directly in front of her, or more notably at the guards in absolute fury. Garrus felt very intimidated by her looks even though they weren't even directed to him. She charged towards the guardsmen, her whole body starting to glow with a vibrant violet color getting more intense every second.
"You two, you make me sick." Shepard growled "I don't even want to know why you are speaking like that, if that's the way you both feel about aliens then that's just tough luck," She said pointing behind her.
Garrus looked to where she was pointing and was a little stunned. Standing there was the two humans who were with Shepard at the beginning. Behind them was a female Quarian, most likely the one that was being hunted by Saren's men. Behind her was a large red-headed Krogan male wearing red armor. Garrus knew this Krogan, knows he goes by the name Wrex and that he was also after Fist. Makes sense to bring him along for the ride, Shepard works fast.
"I'm a Spectre and your goddamn superior officer! If you don't like the way I do things then consider this your last fucking assignment. But if you want to keep your jobs, I suggest you keep your mouths shut and fall in line" She had so much power in her words, it made the guards hang their heads and immediately move out of the way, completely embarrassed.
Shepard sighed and turned around to face her new crew
"Sorry about that everyone, these guys won't be a problem anymore, cmon let's get aboard" Everyone else made their way through the gate and along the catwalk to Normandy's entrance. Shepard then turned to Garrus.
"Hey, I'm sorry for any shit you had to put up with there, I swear no one else in the crew is like that," She said, in a completely different tone and mood from moments ago
Garrus was still a little shocked from what he just witnessed "Oh don't worry about it, I'm used to hearing things like that, I'm a cop remember" he said as they both followed behind the group in front of them "also Commander, when did you suddenly become a Spectre?"
Shepard laughed a little "Oh that, it's a looooong story, but we got some time before debrief so lemme fill you in…"
With that everyone boarded the Normandy.
