It was late morning when he woke up.
He opened the window and the sun, even if timidly, peeped through the clouds. The weather was freezing. It was the middle of winter. The thermometer showed 0 degrees.
He looked at his watch, it was noon.
In less than an hour it would be lunchtime and he had to prepare something.
But he didn't want to get behind the stove. He used to love to cook, but that wasn't one of those days.
Yes, the usual quick sandwich would be quick to eat in front of a TV show.
He made up the bed considering the idea of going back there to rest a little more as it was his day off and was about to go to the kitchen when the doorbell rang.
- Who is it? - asked the detective
- Jay open up, it's Will. - replied the doctor.
Immediately he opened it and saw his brother with envelopes in his hands. She let him in and while he put down the things he had brought she asked him:
- What are you doing here? -
- Well today is my day off and I decided to spend it with my little brother. - replied the doctor - I wanted to save him from eating the usual sandwich alone in front of the TV.
- Well that's what I would have done. And then I'd go back to bed - Jay said with a smile.
They set everything up and then set the table and Will put up plates and cutlery for three.
- Why appliances for three? - The detective asked hesitantly.
- We have a guest coming, -the doctor said simply.
Jay was about to ask a question when the doorbell rang. It was Hayley.
Upton and Will had made arrangements to keep Jay company and all be together.
They ate lunch with what Will had prepared and drank the fine wine that Hayley had brought, laughing and joking among themselves.
It had been a beautiful lunch especially for Jay who was often alone.
Once the kitchen was set up and the chores done, they sat at the table a little longer, chatting and having fun together.
It was a beautiful day, everything was going well.
But unfortunately the days with always go as you want.
Suddenly there were noises coming from the front door.
Jay went to the bedroom to get the gun, Will was going down the hall to see what was going on and Hayley, who didn't have a gun behind her, stayed by the table in the kitchen.
Three mighty men with covered faces, armed to the teeth, had entered the house.
Will took the first thing that came into his hands, a chair, and threw it at one of the thugs. While he backed away in pain, another shot with a pointed rifle fired two shots at the doctor, wounding him in the head and chest.
The third man went into the kitchen and saw Hayley shot her in the abdomen, then after grabbing a pen that was in the valet tray at the entrance he went out followed by the other men.
Meanwhile, Jay had fired a couple of shots while remaining sheltered behind the bedroom wall.
He hadn't seen what had just happened.
The three had sniper rifles with silencers. So everything had happened in silence.
