Sunday morning Teddy woke up early after a fitful sleep. Allison had slept through the nights but Teddy knowing Owen was so close hadn't. At five thirty she gave up. She made a cup of coffee and sat down with a piece of paper to respond to Owens' note from the day before.
Owen,
We do need to talk after what happened last time we saw each other and I hope you can forgive me as well. I've been hiding something from you that I will explain in person when I see you. I've been scared to reach out and talk to you. Sixteen months ago I went to Seattle to see you to talk about what happened and figure out what we could be. I was met at your door by a teenager who said you and Amelia had been up all night with the baby. I was hurt and confused so I fled and came back here. Owen I tried to call you so many times in those first few months but Amelia would answer or the teenager and I panicked and hung up. I hope you can forgive me after what I love hidden from you.
I saw you yesterday across the road and panicked. I know you and I know how your mind works. I promise I will clear everything up when I see you. Not today. I need one more day to think and to process to figure out what I'm going to say. 24 hours is all I ask.
Owen I'm sorry I hurt you and pushed you away. The moment I did I wanted to run after you but it was too late. I miss you. I miss my best friend. I have loved you for 20 years but after what I did your never going to speak to me again. I promise I will make this up to you if it takes until my last breath. We do need to talk. Owen I want to meet your Leo when I saw you across the road he was adorable and you looked happy.
I know who your new CO is and I think they're a pretty kick ass surgeon. Don't worry you've worked with them before just don't be major diamond and you'll be okay. You're going to be fine in this new job. Knowing you you'll be great! Welcome back Major.
I'm just going to side this under your door and will find you at work tomorrow. I will find you don't come looking for me. I'm sure we'll be in the same OR again soon.
Owen you are still and always will be one of my favorite people on this planet. I love you and will for the rest of my life. Talk to you tomorrow Hunt.
Hugs,
Teddy.
Teddy tiptoed across the landing and slid it under the door to number five. She knew it had to be number five because the grumpy cat lady was in number 4 and Teddy had seen her the day before.
Owen woke up early trying to get onto German time before starting work the next day. He saw the paper sticking under the door and sat with his coffee to read the note from Teddy. She was here. Just across the landing but needed 24 hours. After 18 months he could give her another day. She would come find him at work. She was right there close enough to touch yet so far away. What could she be hiding from him. His conversation with Megan came back. His sister knew something but wasn't telling him. Teddy wasn't sick. Teddy had been pushing a stroller the day before there had been one parked outside her door. Had Teddy adopted, had a baby of her own? He texted Megan.
Owen, "does Teddy have a baby?"
Megan didn't reply. Choosing to stay out of it and wanting to sleep.
Owen grabbed a new sheet of paper and replied.
Good morning Teddy,
I found your note under my door. Something about this feels very old fashioned. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. Megan let me know about your promotion. Congratulations! I'm sure tomorrow will be fine. I meet my CO at 7:30 then I'm not sure what the day will bring the joys of trauma surgery right. Megan told me the same thing about being chill. But we all know I'm not good at that.
I am looking forward to sharing an OR again. Do you still listen to Duran Duran when you operate? I will wait for you to find me tomorrow.
I wish you would have told me you were in Seattle. Teddy I always want to see you and hear from you. We will talk whenever you're ready. I'm here to listen.
Do you have plans for your Sunday? Can I hope to see you in the hall?
Have a great day today and see you tomorrow,
Owen.
He slipped the note under her door noticing the stroller in the same place as the day before. He paused and looked to see if there were any clues about why it was there. He was curious. Inside Teddy's apartment he heard a baby cry then stop suddenly. He went back to his own and made breakfast for Leo.
Sitting on the couch with Allison Teddy saw the note slide under her door. As soon as the baby was finished nursing she set Allison on the floor to crawl around while she got the note. She smiled reading it.
"Daddy's here," Teddy told Allison, "you'll meet your daddy soon. He doesn't know about you yet because mommy is scared. And you have a brother baby girl."
"Mamamamama," Allison babbled.
"Yes mama," Teddy smiled, "let's have some yogurt and go for a long walk what do you think?"
"Mamama," Allison continued.
"I'll take that as a yes," Teddy smiled.
Before leaving Teddy wrote a quick note on a post it and stuck it to Owens door.
Owen
No special Sunday plans. Maybe we'll run into each other in the hall. If I put my music on in the OR will you still turn it off on me? There's a park with a great playground for Leo about a 15 minute walk it's always full of kids and they have a cafe with the best coffee and pastries in town across the street. I like the gingerbread.
Have a good Sunday. See you tomorrow,
Teddy 3
Owen came out on the landing hearing the sound and saw the note. At the same time he saw that the stroller was gone again. He saw the back of the post it had directions to the park and cafe. He pulled his own stroller out and strapped Leo in he would head that way maybe he could find her.
Teddy knowing Owen would head where she told him went the opposite direction. She found a busy cafe and ordered coffee and a pastry sitting down to share small bits with Allison. She texted Megan.
Teddy, "Owen has been putting notes under my door."
Megan again chose to ignore the message. She wasn't getting in the middle. Owen and Teddy could work it out. Besides if she talked to Teddy now she was going to demand information about Allison's father. She strongly suspected Allison was her niece. She really thought Allison was Owen's daughter. But why would Teddy hide that? What reason did Teddy have to hide Owen's child from him? Or his family?
Coming back from their morning out Teddy found a sticky note on her door.
Teddy,
We went to that park and cafe you suggested both were excellent. Leo really enjoyed the playground and we found a few other American families. I know you said Monday but if you want to come by for a drink tonight I bought your favourites just in case.
Owen.
Teddy quickly wrote her own response and stuck it on his door.
I'm happy you liked that park. It's one of my favourites, it's even better in the snow. I can't do drinks tonight. I have an early meeting at 7:00 then am meeting my deputy at 7:30. My week is packed. Maybe next weekend? I'm sure I'll see you around at work or in the building and I will come say hi tomorrow.
TA
Owen heard a door shut and went to look. He saw the stroller back where it had been that morning and another note from Teddy. She was keeping him at arms length but why? She had looked good when he had seen her across the road the day before. The stroller was a mystery to him. Was it hers? What was going on.
Teddy's door opened and he stood in his own.
"Daddy," Leo yelled, distracting Owen for a moment. When he looked back the door had closed again. He had missed her.
