As soon as those blue eyes landed on me I knew we were in trouble, big trouble. My mind quickly flashed back to my channel surfing before and I instantly recognised him from the mug shots on the news. He smirked at me as I dropped my purse and my eyes widened.

Why was he here? Jonathan Crane, the Scarecrow. Why was he here? Standing in my doorway? And asking for Ellie?

Without a second thought I quickly grabbed the door and tried to slam it shut. I shoved all my weight and strength into it as I could hear Ellie yelling at me. Freaking out at the unexpected chaos happening.
But I kept my focus on the door and keeping this sociopath on the other side of it.

He shoved his foot in the crack of the door but not fast enough, I had obviously caught him off guard. I threw myself at the door again and heard a roar of pain as he retracted his foot and the door slammed with a satisfying thud. I quickly pushed the two locks into position and fastened the chain with shaking hands. It wouldn't keep anyone out for long though, but I didn't need a life time, just enough time to get the hell out of here. I could hear shouting on the other side but didn't try and figure out what he was saying.

"Jess what the hell is going on?!" Ellie yelled as I ran back to couch, I didn't answer her quickly grabbing her hand and dragging her along into my bedroom. I pushed her down onto the bed and shoved my phone into her hand, slamming the door closed, but unfortunately no lock on this door. Never needed one before now.

"Call Bruce." I said simply and concentrated on discarding her fancy heels and fastening trainers onto her feet. I wasn't going to pin all my hopes on Bruce getting here in time to save the day, and we needed to get out of here. It felt like a waste of valuable time putting trainers on but it was going to be easier to run if you're not worried about glass or needles in your feet. And in Gotham's streets they were more common place than grass.

I tied her shoes tight and then pulled on my own as she dialled the number crying and shaking uncontrollably. I took off my hoody and quickly shoved it over her head and took the phone off her, ignoring the goose bumps erupting on my own skin. The phone was quickly answered, and I could hear Alfred begin speaking but I quickly interrupted him, no time for pleasantries. Even for the lovely English butler.

"Alfred its Jessica, yes Ellie's sister." I said and then I heard the front door locks beginning to break which made Ellie scream. I didn't expect him to break them that quickly! Was he on steroids?!
"Hello Jessica, what is happening?" His voice was calm but urgent as Ellie kept screaming.
"The Scarecrow." I said grabbing Ellie and dragging her to the fire escape. We needed to get out now.
"Tell Bruce we need—".

I didn't get to finish my sentence before the glass of my bedroom window smashed, glass flying over me as I instinctively dropped my phone and turned shielding Ellie. It showered over my back but I didn't feel any cuts, probably the adrenaline stopping the pain if there was any, but I didn't worry about it too much and I didn't stop to see who was there but instead ran out of my bedroom. I some how didn't think it was a good Samaritan smashing my bedroom window.

Still holding Ellie's hand in a tight grip we sprinted out of my room and into the sitting room. I cursed loudly when I could see the door was only hanging by the chain now. Trying to think quickly I ran past the sofa threw open the window that was a straight drop down into the dumpster. I pulled Ellie and helped her up to the window sill as she whimpered, scared out her mind but she quickly recoiled when she looked down.

"I'm not jumping! Especially not into a DUMPSTER!" She screamed trying to scramble back down, I wished for once she was more scared of a sociopath breaking down our door than of heights or garbage right now.
"We don't have time for this Ellie!" I tried but she wouldn't let go of me.

My bedroom door slammed open and I could see a large man wearing a balaclava coming through barrelling towards us, presumably the one responsible for my broken window. I bet he wouldn't pay for it either. Ellie was grabbing onto me and I tried to pull her hands off me, so she could escape. I was even willing to push her out of the window if I needed to.

But I was wrenched away from the open window hard and Ellie collapsed on-top of me, her grip on me iron tight.
The wind was knocked out of me as Ellie accidentally landed with her elbow in my stomach. I struggled to breathe properly when I heard the chain finally give way and the man who I had desperately tried to lock out sauntered in.

Followed by five men in similar black masks to the first. I felt my hands beginning to shake looking at them all, as the one who scared me most out of them all stepped forward. He stood looking around for a minute before his cold features focused on me, still on the floor.

"How very rude of you. That is no way to treat a guest." He laughed making his way over to us. Ellie screamed loudly again and buried her face into my shoulder as I sat up, wrapping my arms around her and glared daggers at this intruder. It was bad enough to see him on the news every night but now he was here in my own sitting room. No screen between us now and the worse part of it was I had no idea why.

"What the hell do you want?" I asked venom dripping on my every word. He dropped down into a crouch as I kept my eyes locked with his. He draped his hands over his knees and I could see him taking in my face, accessing me with ice cold accuracy and bemusement.

For a second he just held my gaze not saying anything, the only noise was the Gotham news anchors talking and Ellie sobbing in my arms.
"I want her." He said pointing a finger towards Ellie. My look of hatred turned to confusion, as I looked down to Ellie who tried to wriggle further into my embrace. As if she could hide from the monster inside of my own body.

"What could you possibly want with her? She's a fashion journalist..."
I asked but he only smirked "I'm well aware." And tipped his head in our direction standing.
"Get the little blonde one." He turned away from us, his interest apparently gone. His thugs for hire, I assume, coming towards us kicked my fight or flight into high gear. I shoved Ellie behind me and sprung to my feet, grabbing my half-drunk beer off the coffee table. I smashed it over the television and brandished it. Not a perfect weapon but desperate times call for desperate measures.

"What do you want with her? I won't ask you again. Not nicely." I said ignoring the beer dripping down my arm and onto my hand, or the brown glass now littering the floor. I thrust it out at the men making them take a step back as they looked toward their boss for what to do now. The Scarecrow just looked at me curiously.

I really wanted to punch that smirk right off his face. He took a step back towards me even as I swung the broken bottle in his direction but he didn't flinch, he stood just out of my range. A lot less threatened than his henchmen as they looked between us, I couldn't see their expressions but I would bet it was confusion.

"We were only going to take the Batman's new lady friend." He said his voice dropping even lower as he stared at me.
"But her sister as well? Two for the price of one isn't a bad offer." He shot out toward me before I had time to react and quickly grabbed onto my hand that held my makeshift weapon. Making sure it was far enough away to not cause him any damage.

He twisted my wrist so hard that my hand released the only defence I had, and I gritted my teeth to stop myself screaming. He then shoved me back into the wall, my head bouncing off it making my vision blur for a second and I growled in frustration.
I had no experience fighting and it was obvious as he flung me around like a rag doll.
"Jess!" Ellie screamed, and I turned in time to see her being picked up, a hand quickly covering her mouth.

"Don't touch her!" I struggled against the arm that was now against my shoulders, holding me in my place as I watched Ellie cry with renewed force. Tears streaming down her face as her sobs were lost in the giant hand covering half of her face. The Scarecrow was looking down at me seemingly very amused. Even at my 5 foot 7 height, he was well over 6 feet, 6 foot 5 at least, very easily towering over me.

"Calm down now." He laughed, which only made me fight against him more, his laughter filling my small apartment.
"You son of a bitch! If you hurt my sister I swear, I'll kill you." I said barely stopping myself from growling again.

I watched Ellie's tiny legs kicking out from under my huge jersey, her hands lost in the sleeves. She looked more like a frightened child than ever before and I wanted nothing more than to bare my teeth and rip into this mad man's neck. I had never felt this animalistic urge in the past but then again I never believed Ellie's life was in danger before, before tonight that is. Or my own.

"Oh, I believe you." He said as he leaned his face even closer to my own. "And as much as I'm enjoying this." He said quietly against my ear, pushing his body more against my own, sending disgusted shivers down my spine. "This will have to wait, I'm on a schedule."

That's when I felt a sudden pinch in my arm, I looked down and amid the cuts from the glass I hadn't even felt there was a needle, pumping something yellow into my arm. I barely registered it must be some kind of drug before my body began to feel too heavy to move. My vision started darkening and my eyelids wouldn't listen to me to stay open.
"Sweet dreams Jessica." I heard in my ear, barely holding onto consciousness, that last thing I heard was Ellie screaming my name.
"JESS!"
