Chapter 2: Those we trust and those we Don't

Lane considers before answering what was asked, "Well, I don't know if it was unusual, but when Colin and Finn were last in London because you're moving there, and Logan is living there rather than a flat, they each opted to buy a stake in the largest single high-end hotel in London. It makes sense given Finn's family business, but Colin's a lawyer and who chose a living place of hotel vs. a flat."

"Ahh, the boys might, but your kind of right. Purchasing a hotel is something one would expect more of Finn than Colin. How are things other than that?" asked Rory.

"Really good actually, Zach repeatedly is telling me he doesn't trust the guy, and as Kwan and Steve's father feels, he gets a say, so I don't shut him up. But I do ignore it, and I do make sure he doesn't start it when Colin's around. He's been a good friend to you and Logan for years. Colin's been great to be the last 18 months. He gets this situation's difficult because I need to do right by my sons but that I need the out of the marriage itself," explained Lane. "Mama likes Colin a lot too. Just because he can support the boys and me and then some was the first reason others followed. His random buys and stories attached amuse her."

"I could see that," said Rory. Jenny was sitting there, listening, not knowing anything about Lane's marriage or the guy Rory and Lane both seemed to know well. Rory probably better than Lane.

"Ok, why would anyone randomly purchase anything, even a luxury hotel. What person would have even the funds to do so, liquid, I mean," asked Jenny.

"I went to and graduated from Yale," said Rory. "The school had tons of trust fund babies, and this is known, but the McCrae's, Huntzberger's, Hayden's, Morgan's, Vanderbilt's, and Grimaldi's are all Billionaires'. The Gilmores millionaires on the high side but still all among the wealthiest of Hartford society. What you might not know, Jenny, is I am a Hayden via my father and a Gilmore. I took the Hayden name 6 years ago when I turned 25. Now legally, it the only one I use, but I didn't alter my birth certificate that says Hayden-Gilmore. Mom's always been desperate for her name to matter more than my dad's. I'm genuinely only back here from Grandpa Gilmore's will reading later this week. It was essential to my grandma as well as appearing to my grandfather that I was present."

"What do you mean only back for Richard's Will reading?" asked Mrs. Kim.

"Mom and I haven't been right for years, probably longer than I can explain. But I knew something was wrong when I needed time to think. When I took a semester off Yale, then went back with an altered degree in the field I started in," explained Rory. "Mom swept it all under the rug when Logan and I took time to sort out something things, a couple of weeks to work out matters. Logan to deal with matters related to his sister Honor's forthcoming wedding. With some help from Honor, some from all people, my Grandma Francine sat down than having a serious conversation about factors. I moved in with Logan. When the spring semester started, I came home to stars hollow less, feeling the need to pull away from my mom. After graduating, I had basically asked Honor or others a breakdown. I sought out Honor, who came and got me. She brought me out to California and to Logan. What happened between graduation and May 27th, 2008, is a long story. Memorial weekend, 3 ½ weeks shy of a year changed a lot." Rory proceeded with the story of her actual phone conversation with Honor.

May 27th, 2008 Flashback

Rory stormed out of the Gilmore home in Stars Hollow. She had turned down the job in New York, much to the angry of her mother. They'd been arguing for days, and Rory just needed out from under Lorelei's control. Rory made her way past Luke's diner and found herself on the grounds where the independence inn uses to stand before the fire. Rory pulled out her phone during the last 11 months. Honor had worked really hard to be a voice of reason for both Rory and Logan despite Rory's graduate day's events at the quad.

"Hello, Honor, this is Rory," said Rory. "I'm sorry it took me two months to call you back from the call at Thanksgiving. Logan's not the only one of us with tons of regrets. I didn't do it for me, Honor. I didn't walk away from the best person in my life for me. The therapist suggested that Lane called for me that my perfectionist issue comes from my own mother's control, manipulation, even the possibility of her being mentally ill with something called Narcissistic Personality disorder. I feel trapped, Honor. I don't know what to do. For the first time since the semester off Yale, I turned two the two jobs offered to me that we in international corresponded field of reporting. I don't really know what to do now other than I need to see Logan. I need to make that right, and I clearly need to find a therapist outside Connecticut and deal with some things."

"Rory, where are you now," asked Honor. She could tell Rory was hyperventilating and was worried wrong was on the brink of a breakdown or anxiety act. The anxiety attack had happened one other time where Honor witnesses it at her wedding in the bridal sweep when Honor caught walker and one of her other bridesmaids lying about the events of the 8 days Rory and Logan spend working through things during the fall of Logan's senior year at Yale.

"Stars Hollow on the property," Rory said, trying to collect herself. "Where the independence Inn use to stand."

"Ok, Rory, I want you to go to Lane's," Said Honor. "It's going to take me at least 30 minutes to get there from Hartford. Tomorrow you and I are getting on a plane, Rory. You and Logan are talking after 11 months. You and Logan all talking. I knew you to have sent some texts, emails. I apologize for not completely talking to each other. But you and my overly stubborn brother need to stop running. You need away from Lorelei, and you need Rory …"

"I need a therapist, Honor. I called you because the only thing I grabbed before leaving my mother's house was a request for an interview with the Mountain View Voice right in Palo Alto," said Rory. "I need to find what my voice in the world of Journalism is, what my niche is, is it writing is it editing, or is it completely the business side of the field because I don't know. I only know that 11 months later, no one can ever be logan. I've been forced on dates by mom, by Grandma Gilmore and all I want is to go back 11 months and tell myself to have more of a backbone and to break ties with a mentally unstable woman who raised me."

Rory had barely finished her story about the phone call from Honor when her phone rang and the name Andrew McCrae appeared on the CID screen of her cellphone. Rory walked out of the room where Jenny, Colin, Jenny's mom, Mrs. Kim, and Lane all sat or stood before answering the call.

Meanwhile London

Logan sat in his office at the London Times when Mitchum opened his office door. Mitchum didn't notice immediately that Logan was actually on a call. So entered the office completely before recognizing his mistake. Logan saved his work on the screen before putting his full attention on the conversation with Rory.

"Leigh, slow down," said Logan. "I know Richard's death was difficult several weeks. I know that Lorelei blamed you for not being present when it happened, but…"

"Andrew McCrae called, IM expected at McCrae, Hayden & Vanderbilt Esq. at 1pm tomorrow afternoon for my grandfather will reading. I'm getting more than 24 hours' notice, around about 27 hours. Whats could possibly be the deal it takes them more than 24 hours to get all documents together for the will reading that I got called today?"

"I don't know Rory, but whatever meeting I've got coming, I going to cancel them and be on the first flight out," said Logan. "I know Richard requested Colin's presence for some reason, but still, I'm going to fly out and be with you there too. Besides, I don't feel comfortable leaving you alone in a room with Lorelei. Emily's never had any control over your mother's behavior. Your grandfather rarely got your mother to behave; it failed more than it worked. I just need to take care of some matter here at the London Times first."

"Ace, Leigh, Rory," said Logan. "We handle more difficult during the last six years plus years. Memorial Days of 2008 wasn't the worst of it, but we both had 11 months to sort through our cramp responses to things then. Then, in 2014, that wasn't easy, Rory, but when something right worth having, it not a bad thing if it doesn't necessarily fall in our laps from what your therapist Dr. Alyssa Crombs said. "I love you, Ace. We agreed 3 years and 3 or 4 months ago back in Hamburg that anyone who isn't one of us, Lorelei especially, gets no say in our future as a couple. My own father has helped keep our relationship out of the social limelight."

"Mitchum as even without all the fact, including that we married in Hamburg, "said Rory. "But maybe it's time we come clean to the biggest support system outside grandma Francine that we've had all these months. Dad is like Mitchum; he knew some facts but not them all. We had no one of knowing what he'd tell me, mom."

"We didn't, Ace. I love you," said Logan. "My Dad's here. I will see you tomorrow after my flight lands." Logan hung up the phone before turning to his dad. "You entered so quietly. What can I do for you, dad? Honor back in Hartford for a few months, mom should be away at her spa time…"

"Should be through, isn't," said Mitchum. "Shira just entered the staff meeting room on this floor 15 minutes ago, Logan. She not alone. She walked in with Colette & Marcus Cadieux and their daughter Odette. They handed me this, supposedly lawyer except for your signature by this evening, Logan."

"So, let me get this right, mother expects me to be a bigamist, so her childhood friend and her can put more money in their spending pocket of the allowances they receive from Matteo and you? I think not," exclaimed Logan. "Rory and I married in Hamburg. We saw no way around keeping things from Lorelei other than to keep the marriage quiet until Richard's died and his will was read. It is being read by Andrew McCrae tomorrow. I'm on my way out that door to support Rory because there no way to keep Rory from having an anxiety attack if I've thousand of miles away. Lorelai sends Rory into serious panic attacks in a way nothing else can or does."

"Who knows, Logan," said Mitchum. "I get the fact your mother made her presence more felt these last four years, and your grandpa Elias were two reasons you didn't find the opening to tell me. I knew about you getting back together not long after Honor did. I knew you to seriously slowed down the pace of our relationship. I know Rory got two years of therapy, and you guys date three or so months before you officially quietly got engaged and didn't make it public knowledge."

"Francine, Honor, and Lane are the only people who knew about the wedding," said Logan. "Christopher, Francine, Finn, Colin, Lane, Honor, and you knew when I proposed. Rory kept the Gilmore side of the family out of it. If she told Richard, he felt there come the point he couldn't keep it from Emily. Emily would refuse to keep it from Lorelei. Lorelei needs a mental institution. According to a conversation with Rory earlier this week, if Richard will is as a suspect and Emily or Rory hold conservatorship to Lorelei's inheritance, control the amount promise to her for the inn expansion there is going to be problems."

"It's … control Richard needed to assert, I assume, "said Mitchum. "

It is. I need to be at the airport in less than an hour. I can't deal with this crap, and could you please explain to me why mom feels I need to marry Tristan's cast-offs," asked Logan, who continued. "I'll admit knowing limited about Odette and Tristan's romance, but I know enough to know they not separated due to Tristan's lack of being in love with her."

"Settle what you need with canceling your meetings then," said Mitchum. "If the editor doesn't cancel, then leave me a note via email, and I'll pick it up. Make your plan, Logan. I'll go deal with Colette, Odette, and your mother. At some point, I going to need a certificated copy of your marriage license and Logan…"

"No, I didn't make Rory since a prenup. Chris came up with a resolution to protecting the family companies should it ever need to be used, Rory and I signed that, but that is it," said Logan. "Despite the hell, Lorelei put Rory through, we both believe in the vows we made to each other the day we married. We believe that when you marry for the right reason, it truly meant to last until death do you part."

"I'll ask Christopher for a copy of that agreement then," said Mitchum. "Logan, I wish you felt you could have included your family in your big day. But I saw how Lorelei behaved the day I arrived at the house in Martha's Vineyard. Your choice had to be to protect Rory from future manipulation from Lorelei first."

"Rory and I made Chris and Francine a promise, for our four-wedding anniversary, we are doing a proper society wedding," said Logan. It will take place on August 28th, 2017. Francine has been left in charge of all the plans. Our fourth wedding anniversary ensures that Lorelei has been, while Emily looking into committing Lorelei for psychiatric help against her will. Rory hopes but doesn't know that even possible."

With Logan's last statement, Mitchum left, allowing Logan the time to reschedule his meetings. He left a message when two of the editors' sports and editorial wouldn't shift the meetings. Sending the email for Mitchum, Logan left the London times office, heading off the floor to the elevator on the opposite end of the floor from the meeting room that held Shira, Odette, Colette, & Marcus, who Mitchum had made his way back toward to deal with the group. Logan's ride to the airport was short from the London Times office. While Logan's Plane was actually a taxi on the runway, Mitchum stopped by his own office typing up an email to Christopher Hayden, Rory's father acting for the copies of the documents he told Logan he was going to request. Once he got the email out, he headed back toward the meeting room that Shira had commandeered.

London Times Meeting Room November 9th, 2016

Mitchum entered to find Colette, Shira and Matteo explain the dynastic plan and the prenup clauses to Odette. Colette and Shira's face looked like they were full of glee, Shira's at the extra money that paying a part of Cadieux Presses would provide HPG in the European holding and Colette as finding a way to keep her husband's family's company from going under and them losing their wealthy status. It had been during her years at Oxford that Odette had to meet Logan's cousin Tristan. It has been different from Rory and Logan's relationship because Odette had been the one who didn't want to commit when she finally agreed to it. Tristan was in med school.

He worked for Doctors without Borders for weeks of medical school after passing his boards two years with Doctors without Borders 2013 to January of 2015. Tristan had been gone six months when Colette ordered her daughter to put a permeant end to the relationship. Entering the room alone didn't draw the group's attention away from the prenup agreement. In frustration and anger even, Mitchum slammed his hand down on the table to gain their attention. It caused Matteo to look up with a start to see Mitchum, with Logan's copy of the prenup unsigned.

"Who's idea was this, without consulting me, my board, or any future plans there might be for when or even IF Logan would ever live a dynastic plan" demanded Mitchum.

"Colette & Shira approached me," said Matteo. "According to them, it would solve issues both our company boards have. According to Shira, your board has wanted your son married for the last 8 years as the way he presents himself to the business world sends a bad message being unmarried or without a proper escort to business meals. My board needs assurance the company will move forward with the leadership of someone with a degree in business management and journalism. Odette might be my heiress, but her degree it's in visual arts."

"Last I knew, HGP board has no problem with Logan not being married. I was not consulted. Logan is not here. He had to return to Hartford on personal business for a couple of days. Your so-called perfect plan. I reject the so call prenup and proposal. I will make sure the HPG board does the same. And don't think that I don't know your daughter's history of your wife's antics. I will never ask my son to marry his cousin Tristan's ex-girlfriend. Logan's single status is none of your business Matteo. And Shira, you push to move this forward, then you will see divorce papers from Andrew McCrae quicker than you can figure out an explanation for your actions. Now I am telling you all to get out of my office headquarters. You've no grounds to be here. Should you attempt to pursue your little plan, you will see me in court."

November 10th, 2016

Logan's flight to Hartford was just over 7 hours in length. Rory crashed at Honor and Josh's house overnight to provide her the needed distance from Lorelei. Rory didn't know what to expect from Richard's will that afternoon. Rory wake to find Logan asleep in the bed next to her, she wasn't sure what time his flight had landed from London, but she was more than glad to see her. Rory lay back down after resting her head against Logan's chest. Stress was a good word for all Rory had been dealing with since she arrived in Connecticut afterword that the lawyers were read to read Richard's will. She was guilted by Emily into a visit to stars hollow with Lorelei to resolve their stand-off, as Emily called the clash the duo was having for years now. Colin had remained in stars open overnight as he took Lane and the boys to breakfast this morning.

Stars Hollow

Colin, Lane, Steve, and Kwan walked into Weston Bakery to have an excellent quick breakfast. After spending the day with their sons, Zach was headed back out onto the road with his band. Which meant a nice sense of peace for Lane. Whenever Zach was home, he needed to place his opinion about Lane's choices into the open. He hated Colin without getting to even know the man, and from what Lane could figure out, it had very little to do with Colin being a lawyer. Colin thought very little of Zach for the way Lane's ex treated her and the boys. Steve and Kwan to Lane's way of thinking seem very much like an afterthought to Zach. Lane and Colin, on the other hand, didn't happen overnight. It starts out with Lane joining Rory when she hands the Yale crowd come to a spending a few hours in Stars Hollow. Those visits allowed Lane to get to know Colin as more than a lawyer. They allowed Rory to break free of Lorelei's insanity. Colin and Lane were barely seated with the boys when Jenny walked over to the group's table.

"Good morning Lane," said Jenny. "I was kind of hoping to talk a little more with you and Rory today, but I've not seen Rory at all this morning."

"She spent the night in Hartford. Her maternal grandfather, Richard Gilmore past away on October 3rd, so just over a month ago," said Lane. "Colin's on his way out to his father's law firm to be there for Rory during the will reading, but it is actual Colin's father in charge of writing and reading Richard's will to the Gilmore family. But I'd be more than glad to meet up with you and catch up with you later this morning once I get the boys to school."

"Ok sounds good; how about I meet you by the gazebo around 10am," said Jenny. Jenny knew as long as she didn't set the meeting for late in the afternoon, she'd been free and clear to follow through. Dean was on a construction project just outside Hartford.

Hartford

Around the same time, Rory and Logan were heading downstairs to join Honor and Josh in their kitchen. Rory and Logan joined honor at the table as Josh headed out to his office for the day. Before heading on his way out, Josh went to answer the front door of his and honor's place to find Honor and Logan's cousin, who he invited in, standing at the door around 10am on a Tuesday morning. Tristan Dugray knew his way around honor and Josh's house well enough. Since he finished with Doctor's without borders, Tristan returned to practice medicine at London, London Tower Memorial Hospital, a private hospital in London's heart. His grandfather's health brought Tristan back to Hartford 3 months ago.

"Good morning, Honor," said Tristan announcing himself, not knowing of Rory and Logan's presence. He entered the kitchen, where Honor was placing a full plate of pancakes on the table.

"Tristan," said Honor. "Can I get you some coffee? She knew a little bit of Rory's history at Chilton from when Tristan went there. Most of it comes from Paris, however, rather than Rory. To honor concern, Rory has dealt with enough between Richard's will reading and Lorelei's manipulative behavior that had started years ago during Rory's years at Yale.

"Coffee would be great…" said Tristan. "well, well, well if it is Rory Gilmore, what brings you here?"

Rory looked at Logan, not sure what they should tell Tristan or not tell him, for that matter. When Logan had finally fully woken up before the comedown, Logan shared his conversation with Mitchum to Rory. "Tristan, meet my wife, Leigh Lorelei Hayden Huntzberger, better known as Rory. She dropped the name Gilmore six years ago, and it's a story she rather not get into. What brought you back to Hartford?"

"Logan, you're a Huntzberger, and Rory's mother is a Gilmore; I know for a fact her father was never around. It was always a rumor about Hartford. I was summoned back here three months ago, so I am practicing temporary at Hartford Memorial."

"My father is Christopher Hayden, son of the late strobe Hayden and his widow Francine Hayden," Rory finally said. "The lack of my father being around when you knew me at Chilton it is so cut and draw I've only begun to scrape the surface of that truth."

"While as fascinating as all this might be, Tristan," said Logan. "You might want time to check in with my father. Shira and Colette have been playing little games with people's lives. Rory and I have someone we need to be by 1pm, so we have a couple of things we need to get down before that. Welcome, Home cousin."

Stars Hollow

Lorelei entered Luke's dinner, "Lucas Danes, you better have fresh coffee made for me because I've had none this morning. Thank you, hurry, please. Lawyers aren't pleasant and just want access to the money promised me for the inn expansion to a can alter my plans better and get out of that stuff Hartford office as quick as possible."

"Hold your horses, Lorelei," said Luke. "As you can see, I'm business Coffee got a minute left on the freshly brewed pot, but at soon as it's down, Jess will get you exactly what you need. I'm not going to be responsible for giving you that drink." Luke walked away to serve a customer waiting and not throwing, and tantrum as Lorelei just had.

"Here's your extra-large coffee, Lorelei," said Jess. Lorelei quickly handed Jess the proper cash while adding a danish to her order before taking off. Lorelei had been ordered to stop by Emily's house before the trip to McCrae, Hayden & Vanderbilt's Esquire Law offices. Lorelei wasn't aware the directive was only for her. Rory didn't receive the same mandate as Lorelei had from her grandmother.

Hartford

Rory came down after getting ready to head to the lawyer's office. She was wearing Floral Print Silk Dress BLACK MULTI Autumnal flowers bloom across this A-line silk dress that gracefully flutters with its ruffled, asymmetrical knee-length skirt. It was business-appropriate, but she also felt appropriate for the event of the will reading. She feared Emily and her mother arriving arguing about Lorelei's view of proper wardrobe for today. Logan came down not far behind Rory. He was in a Dark Navy suit from an expensive designer. He placed the call to Frank, and he and Rory were waiting on his arrival now. Logan's car was in London. When he lived in Hartford, the vehicle he owned, even at Yale, had been long replaced with the one that now remained at his penthouse complex parking lot within the hotel Colin and Finn found.

"Honor, Rory, and I aren't sure how long the will reading is going to take," said Logan, unaware that Tristan didn't know about Richard's passing. "But let's plan to make dinner when Josh gets off tonight at the Capital Grille; it's one of Rory's favorite places to eat out. I know you love it too, Honor?"

"Sound good Logan, give me a call when you have a better idea on time, and I'll call to make the reservation for us. Rory, please tell Emily I'm thinking of her," said Honor. "And ignore Lorelei…" Rory and Logan walked out the door as Frank pulled the limo into the driveway. Back in Honor's Kitchen.

"Honor, what in the world do you mean by telling Emily I'm thinking about her? "asked Tristan.

"You really don't know what, Richard, passed way on October 3rd? Rory and Logan are only back from London for Richard's will reading. If it weren't for that, they both be settled permanently into jobs at HPG in London, Tristan."
