A/N: I'm actually playing through the game as I write these… chapter by chapter… I hope I'm adding enough to this to make this all enjoyable! And I'm also interested in trying to write a modern AU… I recently got a job and planning to finally buy myself everything I would need to cosplay as Robin, I'm quite excited about it.
Prologue: The Verge of History
Chrom takes a deep breath as he walks through the field, Lissa sighs out with him as they take in the beautiful scenery, "What a lovely day wouldn't you say so?" Chrom says watching the tall grass flow in the soft breeze, as it glimmers under the brilliant sunlight. Lissa hmph's in agreement as Frederic smiles "A beautiful day indeed milord."
Chrom would set out walking again his sister and faithful retainer at his heels as they all just enjoy the beautiful day in the sun, having just had a run-in with some foreigners, but all of that was swiftly put at the back of their minds with the beautiful scenery around them. Until it became marred by the blood upon the grass.
"Chrom… is that blood?" Lissa asks getting a "yeah, just stay behind me…" as he draws Falchion and starts following the trail of blood Frederic commenting, "It looks like something or someone was attacked and dragged by the looks of it…" as he readies his lance for combat until, Chrom notices the form of someone laying face down in the field, and he rushes over to the stranger much to the displeasure of Frederic, who shouts "Careful Milord, this could be a trap!"
"I don't care they could be dying!" Chrom shouts as he kneels next to the possible corpse before rolling it onto its back, finding a white-haired woman in the dark robe with a gash across her chest hidden under her dark robe, but her chest is rising and falling. "Lissa hurry over here she is alive, but wounded!" Chrom shouts and Lissa rushes past Frederic who closes the distance between himself and his charges as Lissa gets to work lifting the woman's shirt to find a long gash along her chest starting at the bottom of her ribs and stretching along to her- "Chrom! Look away don't you have any manners?" Lissa shouts making the blue-haired lord blush as he turns to give the unconscious woman some privacy, focusing his eyes on a tree as he mentally grumbles 'I wasn't being indecent I was just looking at her wound…'
"You can stop staring at that tree… I know you weren't eyeing her up you dork, I was just teasing you!" Lissa says understanding the unvoiced question on Chrom's face as he looks at the woman with concern, "It was a clean-cut, probably from a sword, it was just a flesh wound so she was lucky… No idea what happened to her… what should we do?" Chrom just hums in response, staring at the woman losing himself in thought, 'What is she doing out here? who attacked her? Who is she? Now that I get a good look at her she is beautiful… with that long white hair, soft-looking pale skin, she looks so peaceful...'
Lissa's voice brings Chrom back to reality as she groans out his name "CHROM~ we have to do something…" He turns Lissa saying "what do you propose we do?" not noticing as the woman's eyes start to open, one thought going through her mind 'what is going on?' as the woman's vision focuses she sees a blue-haired man in an outfit of dark blue and white, and one sleeve only with some kind of marking on his shoulder, and to his right a younger-looking woman with blond hair, in a yellow dress that matches perfectly with her messy pigtails who turns to the blue-haired man "Eh, uh… I don't know?" the blond says before noticing the opened eyes of the woman on the ground and gasps in surprise, and then the blue-haired man notices too.
The woman gets up a little bit propping herself up on her elbows as the two lean down, "I see you're awake now." The Blue-haired man says smiling softly, and the woman feels at ease, 'he is kinda cute.' she can help but think for a moment before turning to the blond who says "hey there" before chuckling nervously, bringing a smile to the silver-haired woman's lips. The man with blue hair says "there are better places to take a nap than on the ground you know…" in a slightly joking way making the blond giggle, before reaching out saying "Give me your hand." The robed woman reaches out and takes his hand her eyes catching something maybe a tattoo on the back of her hand and she instantly feels uneasy and wants to cover it but her mind quickly moves onto other things as she is pulled up and is now eye to eye with the man, her dusky gold eyes meeting his deep blueish greys.
The man simply asks "You all right? We found you out here wounded and bleeding?" the woman responds "Y-yes… Thank you, Chrom." The man smiles "Ah, Then you know who I am?" with a look of consideration on his face. The woman's face scrunches in confusion as she looks at Chrom, one of her hands idly making sure the back of her right hand is covered as she slips on the gloves she finds in her pockets after trying to hide her hands in them, "No, actually, I… It's strange… Your name, it just… came to me…" the woman admits looking at the grass instead of at Chrom… who hums out "Hmm, how curious. Tell me, what's your name? What brings you here?" his shoulders tensing as he can tell something is wrong.
The silver-haired woman lifts her right and to her face two fingers pressing into her temple and a thumb into her cheek as she mumbles "um… my name is… it's… Hmm?" Chrom's face starts to express his worry as he asks "You Don't Know your own name?" the woman drops her hand to her side and starts to look around saying "I'm not sure if… I'm sorry, but where am I, exactly?"
Lissa jumps up and steps forward saying "Hey, I've heard of this! It's called amnesia!" with a smirk on her face that screams 'I know something you don't, I know something you don't~'
A third person makes themselves known to the robed woman as he clears his throat saying "It's called a load of pegasus dung." in response to Lissa's claim. "We're to believe you remember milord's name, but not your own?" the woman steps back 'He has a point…' shaking her head she states "B-but it's the truth!" her voice wavering in fear.
Chrom looks over his shoulder at the knight standing with his arms behind his back, "...What if it IS true, Frederick? We can't just leave her here, alone and confused. What sort of Shepherds would we be then?" Frederick sighs under his breath "Just the same, milord, I must emphasize caution 'Twould not do to let a wolf into our flock." It's Chrom's turn to sigh under his breath as he turns to the robed woman "Right then-we'll take her back to town and sort this out there."
The woman steps back nervously saying "Wait just one moment. Do I have a say in this?" Chrom gestures with one arm as he says "Peace, friend-I promise we'll hear all you have to say back in town. Now come." Chrom reaches out and places a hand on the woman's shoulder and starts to guide her towards the town carefully ushering her forward and ready to help her should she stumble or fall, and she does trip once or twice.
After a bit, Chrom removes himself from the robed woman trusting her to walk on her own, and he falls back in line with Frederic and Lissa. "Milord, Her garb, bares the religious symbols of the Grimleal, this woman is most likely plegian, she could be a spy, an assassin… ore even worse..." overhearing every word the knight says the woman stops and turns facing the shepherds and asks "What will you do with me? Am I to be a Prisoner? I don't know what you are talking about but it sounds… bad…"
Chrom chuckles nervously as he imagens what she could be thinking, "Hah! You'll be free to go once we establish you're no enemy of Ylisse." the woman looks up from her feet to Chrom asking "Is that where we are? Ylisse?" Frederic scoffs "You've never heard of the halidom?" He fakes a laugh "Ha! Someone pay this actress She plays quite the fool! The furrowed brow is especially convincing." making the woman look down at the ground frustrated that she can remember anything and afraid of what will happen if she doesn't remember something.
Chrom's voice brings her eyes to him once more as he chides "Frederick, please." before turning to the woman and explaining "This land is known as the Halidom of Ylisse. Our ruler, Emmeryn, is called the exalt. I suppose proper introductions are in order, My name is CHrom-but then, you already knew that. The delicate one here is my little sister, Lissa." after that last comment Lissa throws her arms in the air and stomps her feet for a moment yelling "I am NOT delicate! … Hmph!" she turns to the woman "Ignore my brother, please. He can be a bit thick sometimes." Lissa smiles softly "But you're lucky the Shepherds found you. Brigands would've been a rude awakening!"
"Shepherds? You tend Sheep? ...In full armor?" Chrom smiles at the woman's words saying "Heh, it's a dangerous job. Just ask Frederick the Wary here." as he waves to said knight who straightens up announcing "A title I shall wear with pride! Gods forbid one of us keeps an appropriate level of caution. I have every wish to trust you, stranger, you could just be a Plegian refugee, but my station mandates otherwise."
The woman sighs "I understand, sir. I would do no less myself…" but she stops for a moment as a look of realization dawns on her face "My name is Robin… I just remembered that. How odd. I suppose that's one mystery solved." she says with a slight smile as she rubs the back of her neck.
"Robin? Is that foreign?" Chrom asks before ignoring his question "...Ah, well. We can discuss it later. We're Almost to the town. Once we-" the blue-haired man stops sniffing at the air, so Robin takes a whiff as well, and smells smoke. Lissa points towards the town far in the distance "Chrom, look! The town!" where several buildings are on fire, "Damn it! The town is ablaze! Those blasted brigands, no doubt…" Chrom says drawing his sword and rushing forward calling to his companions "Fredrick, Lissa! Quickly!" Frederick looks to Chrom then to robin and back to Chrom, "Milord, what about her?" looking back over his shoulder to see Frederick hopping on his horse Chrom shouts "Unless she's on fire as well, it can wait!" The knight takes the reins and with a flick rides after his lord with Lissa hopping on with him "Aptly put, Milord." Lissa shouts out "Let's go already!"
Robin stands there feeling confused at what to do as she shouts "But what about-hmm…" but she doesn't bother finishing what she was going to ask as she sighs and hugs herself for a moment feeling vulnerable. Just then she feels something under her robes and parting it she finds what she recognizes as a tome as well as a sword. 'Maybe I could help them… I don't want to be alone…'
Hearing screams from the townsfolk as they arrive at the town square Lissa turns to her brother saying "Chrom, we have to stop them!" as she dismounts from Frederick's horse. Chrom turns to his sister "Don't worry-after today, these bandits won't be bothering anyone ever again…" Suddenly a fourth figure rushes into the square, Robin shouts "CHROM WAIT!"
The shepherds turn to the amnesiac as she runs with a bronze sword in one hand a book in the other. "R-robin?! You followed us! Why?" Chrom asks in surprise to see their new acquaintance. "I… I'm not certain myself" Robin says trying to catch her breach as she finally catches up saying "But I'm armed, and I know my way around a fight" 'I think' "if you'll have me." as she holds up her sword.
Chrom shakes his head "Of course-strength in numbers. Just stay close!" as he turns back to the brigands in the square rushing off to cut the first one down as Frederick informs Robin "Remember, Robin, we face practiced thieves and murderers. They will grant us no quarter. It's kill or be killed." before riding off.
Robin rushes after Chrom and towards a bandit when Chrom turns to her saying "I see you wear a sword, is it- wait, Is that a tome? ...you know magic?" Robin shrugs "I… believe so? I suppose I should check." Chrom blanches staring at Robin "you believe so? Perhaps I'll just keep a few paces behind you for the time being…" as she charges up electricity in one hand saying "No… I can control it, I'm sure… Now, how did this work again? Ah, yes…" and then blasts away a brigand before turning to Chrom and smiles. 'Gods that is a cute smile'
Rushing up behind the group Lissa says "We'll see who's delicate! I may not be able to attack like Chrom, but when you get injured? I'll be the one stitching your bones back together, care of my trusty staff! You just tell me where to go Robin!" a huge grin on her face as she smiles at robin.
A bandit charges forward only to be sliced down by Chrom's blade and another launches a spell at Frederick only for one of Robin's spells to meet it mid-air, the mage is swiftly cut down with a swing of Federick's silver lance, Chrom turns and looks over everyone "Is anyone hurt? Still with us, Robin?" Robin nods to him "Mhm… I'm fine, but it's strange, here on the battlefield, I can… well, I can "see" things." Chrom turns to her confused and a bit concerned "See things? Like what?" Robin point towards the remaining brigands across one of the two bridges "The enemy's strength, their weaponry, the flow of battle… I must have studied this somewhere." Chrom smirks "So, you're saying you can size up the enemy at a glance?" Robin nods "Yes, it would seem so. And perhaps more, if I apply myself."
Chrom nods and says "Apply yourself." Robin turns to him confused, "What?" Chrom puts a hand on Robin's shoulder making her blush ever so slightly as he says "Tell me what you see and what we should do." Robin nods and looks across the bridge seeing the last three of the brigands, she points to the closest one, "He is not the leader, with his sword he would be no match for Frederick while their leader there wields an axe, it looks like a hand axe so you should be careful, I would say you should charge him while I take out the third guy, leaving you with no distractions" Chrom nods to Frederick "you heard the plan lets go with it!"
The Ruffian fell as soon as he went to stop Chrom's charge to take out his boss, with Frederick's lance impaling him, but as robin faces off against her target she leads with a lunge impaling the man, but as he dies he pulls a dagger and stabs her in the side hissing out his last words "Our leader Garrick will make you suffer." seeing this Chrom stops his charge and rushes over to Robin, "Are you all right? Robin, That was reckless you could have taken him out with that tome of yours." Robin just stares at the body of the man she just killed saying "I'm fine, Chrom… Don't worry." her voice somewhat distant.
Chrom places a hand on her shoulder "You've lent us your strength, and that makes you a friend. Having an ally by my side gives me courage, and it pains me to see my allies injured." Robin turns to him "Thank you, but…I think there's more to it than that." Chrom looks at her funny for a moment "What do you mean?" Robin states "I believe there's a tactical advantage to fighting side by side… It's fuzzy… Wait, yes: working pairs improves strength defense, speed… Yes, yes, I'm sure of it!" Chrom nods to Robin, "Then let's take this last one out together!"
As Chrom charges the Brigand leader he shouts "Here, sheepy, sheepy! Come to the slaughter!" but his taunt cry is cut off by Chrom rushing past him and slicing into his side as he slides under the wide swing of his axe, leaving him open to the blast of electricity Robin sends into him. Garrick cries out one last time as Flachion meets his flesh once more driving itself through his heart.
As Chrom pulls his blade free Robin sinks to her knees "Well, that's the end of that." as Lissa rushes over, using her staff to heal Robin she giggles saying "Lucky for the town, we were close by, But Holy WOW, Robin! You were incredible! Swords, sorcery, AND tactics! Is there anything you can't do?" Robin is about to answer 'remember my past' but Chrom speaks first "you're certainly no helpless victim, that much is for sure." as he holds out a hand to help Robin to her feet.
Frederick round over on his horse saying "Indeed. Perhaps you might even be capable of an explanation for how you came here?" The robed woman sighs out "I understand your skepticism, Sir Frederick. And I cannot explain why only some knowledge has returned to me. But please, believe me. I have shared all that I know." Chrom puts a hand on Robin's shoulder "You fought to save Ylissean lives." turning to Fredrick he adds "My heart says that's enough."
Frederick's emotions remain unreadable as he asks "And your mind, milord? Will you not heed its counsel as well?" Chrom gestures to Robin saying "Frederick, the shepherds could use someone with Robin's talents. We've brigands and unruly neighbors, all looking to bloody our soil. Would you really have us lose such an able tactician? Besides, I believe her story, odd as it might be." Robin blushes slightly at the praise and stammers out "Th-thank you, Chrom." Chrom smiles obliviously to the redness on Robin's cheeks "So how about it? Will you join us, Robin?" "I would be honored." Robin blurts out a bit faster and louder than she intended to.
Frederic chooses this time to point out, "Did you notice, milord? The brigands spoke with a Plegian accent." Robin grips at the sleeves of her cloak "You mentioned Plegian before, what's plegian?" Chrom shakes his head slightly his smile disappearing "Plegia is Ylisse's westerly neighbor. They send small bands into our territory, hoping to instigate a war." Lissa frowns as she looks down holding her hands behind her back "And it's the poor townsfolk who suffer! Totally innocent, and totally helpless…" she laments in quiet anger.
Frederick dismounts and walks over placing a gentle hand on her shoulder "They do have us, milady: Shepherds to protect the sheep. Do not be swept up in your anger. It will cloud your judgment." Lissa sighs out "I know, I know… Don't worry. I'll get used to all this." just then one of the villagers rushes out to meet them "Milord, Please! You must stay the night! We are simple Folk of simple means, but we would gladly toast your valor with a feast!" Lissa smiles ignoring Frederick as he says "A most generous offer, sir, and no doubt your hospitality would be grand… But I'm afraid we must hurry back to Ylisstol." just then Lissa starts listing off her food preferences "Dark meat only for me, medium well, and no salt in the soup. I simply-" then she recognizes what Frederick has said "Wait, what?! We're not staying?! But, Frederick, it's nearly dark!" Frederic turns to Lissa his eyes closed as he softly laughs "When night falls, we'll camp. Eat of the land, make our bed of twigs and the like… I believe you mentioned you would be "getting used to this"?"
Lissa suddenly yells "UGH Frederick? Sometimes I hate you." Robin sighs out "You've quite the stern lieutenant there." while she rubs her stomach wishing she they could stay as food sounds amazing. Lissa grumbles "Yeah, well, "stern" is one name for it. I can think of a few others!" Chrom looks to the two women saying "Frederick only smiles when he's about to bring down the axe." Robin's eyes widen in a bit of worry "Duly noted."
Frederick clears his throat "AHEM… You do realize I AM still present?" Chrom smiles teasingly saying "Oh, we realize." making Robin chuckle in a way he can't help but find cute. "Milord remains as amusing as ever. Now then, shall we be going?" Frederick asks, and Chrom turns saying "All right, all right. Ready to go Robin? The capital isn't far."
Robin nods and they start off, with Robin hanging in the back with Lissa carefully watching Chrom, who she can't help but admire. 'He seems so...He makes me feel at ease… I think this is the start of something good.'
