chapter two: beginning

he squeezed my hand reassuringly, i probably looked a bit panicked. "we should start walkin' again. catch up with the others."

i looked ahead of us on the trail and realized i couldn't see anyone. i laughed nervously, "yeah we should probably find them."

once again we began walking, our fingers still entwined.

"newt?" i asked.

"yes tommy?"

"um...why did you grab my hand?" i braced myself for his answer, not knowing what he would say.

"because i like ya tommy...why else?"

"y-you like me? like...as a crush like me?"

he smiled warmly, despite it being chilly, "yes...and i'm assumin', since we're still holdin' hands...you like me too…?"

he said it like a statement at first, like he thought he had it figured out but then became unsure of himself. i nodded, "i do like you, newt. very much."

he beamed, "great. now….boyfriend….let's keep walking."

i grinned, "boyfriend?"

he blushed...finally, "u-uh...sorry, we don't have to use it if you don't want to."

i leaned in and kissed his cheek, "i like it…boyfriend."

this time when we started walking, we were laughing and talking the whole way to the top where our friends were waiting for us. before we were close enough to where they could see us, we dropped our hands.

"i don't think i want our friends knowin' 'bout us just yet."

i nodded in agreement, "that sounds like a good plan."

"took you long enough." stated alby. "what were you two doing?"

"lookin' at the stars." newt replied coolly.

chuck smiled, "they really are amazing! i don't think i've seen this many before!"

we all laughed at my brother's enthusiasm. chuck was like a puppy and we all loved him. i was so excited when my mom decided to adopt him, he was already like a brother to me and i had always wanted a brother.

suddenly teresa gasped and pointed, "you guys! look, it's a shooting star!" we all turned our heads to where she was pointing and sure enough, there was a shooting star. a bright ball of light streaking downward. everyone oohed and ahhed, because it truly was magnificent. i glanced over at newt, the amazed expression on his face making him so much cuter.

soon the star disappeared and the moment was over. "hey how about we take a picture proving we made it to the top." minho suggested.

i inwardly groaned, i hated taking pictures. i glanced over at newt, knowing he had a similar opinion. he rolled his eyes and strode up beside me. "let's just get this over with." he said.

we decided to have gally take the picture, since he wasn't really our friend. we were going to be in two lines, chuck, teresa and minho in the front on their knees and newt, alby and i in the back, standing. as we were getting situated, i suddenly had an idea. since it was taking a bit i decided to tell newt.

i whispered my idea in his ear. his eyes widened but he nodded. finally we all got situated and gally stood before us with teresa's phone camera.

"if you break the phone gally i'll break your bones." she yelled out at him

"i won't break it teresa, don't worry." he replied. "now on the count of...four."

"four? why four? that so random, why not just do three?!" minho commented.

"because i want it to be four, now shut up and let me take the picture."

i shifted nervously, trying to move closer to newt.

"one."

i glanced and newt and he gave me a smile. i smiled back and took a deep breath.

"two."

newt reached down and grabbed my hand, squeezing it reassuringly.

"three."

i turned my body to face his and he did the same.

"four."

the phone camera flashed and…
