It was quite a lovely day in Athens. The birds were chirping, the sun was out, really a perfect time to burst out into a Disney musical number. But alas, you were stuck with grocery shopping. Though at least you weren't the only one out an about. The village was bustling, chatter was heard everywhere. The sun was a welcome thing today, and it's rays were casting a warm light on your face. You took a deep breath in, a small smile gracing your lips. You turned your head to see a bakery, the aroma of fresh baked goods floating out the window. You took another whiff when you passed the building, humming a bit when the smell reached your nose. Your stomach growled at that, seeing as you left before eating breakfast. You paused for a minute before deciding to enter the small shop.
"Y/n! Come for some breakfast this morning I see?" he baker called from the counter as you stepped inside, a wide grin on his face.
You nodded in response as you stepped up to the counter, "Just decided to leave without eating again I guess." you said with a shrug.
"Well lucky for you I just pulled some fresh pastries from the oven!" He said with a smile as he gestured to the fresh treats cooling in window, "Would you like one for the road?"
You craned your neck a bit to look at the hot pastries in the back, "You know what, Giorgos? I'll take one." you replied as you leaned against the counter
"Excellent choice, y/n!" He exclaimed with a grin, making a gesture with his hand before turning on his heal to grab a pastry, sliding it over to you from the counter, "On the house."
You smiled at that as you took your pastry, "Thanks." you said with a wink as you picked up the pastry, "Well, guess I'll see you around then, and tell your wife I said hi!" you called behind your shoulder as you walked out the door. Well, seemed today was shaping up to be a good one. You've already started the day with free breakfast, so that should be a sure sign things would go great.
You continued along, quickly finishing up your pastry as you walked. You decided to buy some fresh fruit, apples, grapes, and such. The basket you had brought with you was already nearly full, and you figured you might want to think about heading home. You nodded at your decision before picking outa few more fruits. All the while, you listened in on others conversations... just in case, of course. You never know when someone might be talking about some important information you could use later.
"I was walking over here, and I saw there was an absolutely awful wreck by the side of the road!" One woman said to her companion as they walked past. That caught your attention, and you paused your fruit-purchase to listen in.
"Oh, how dreadful! I hope they're okay." the other said with a sympathetic look before they both walked out of earshot.Well. You paused to think on that for a moment. You had come here not too long ago, and you hadn't seen any crash. This must have happened in the past few minutes, otherwise you would have at least seen something. You though on that for a bit longer before a hand was stuck in your face, snapping a few times.
"Hey, hey lady! Are you gonna pay for your stuff or not? You're holding up the line!" the man working the fruit booth huffed, clearly not in the best mood.
You sighed at that as you put the grapefruit in your basket before paying and walking away. You glanced back to see that there was in fact quite the line, and a few people seemed to be in a rush, "Sheesh, is this the only fruit stand in Athens or something?" you muttered under your breath as you walked back through the town. You walked past stores before stopping in front of a display window. You looked in at the different dresses they had on display, and stood back a bit to see your refection in them. You smiled a tad at that before moving on. You had to get home soon anyways.
You continued your leisurely stroll as a few blue bird decided to fly in your path as well. A yelp left your mouth and you quickly tucked tail and decided to take a different route home. Due to a childhood incident, you weren't very fond of birds. You glanced behind you after a bit, and sighed in relief once they were gone. See, when you were a child, your mother had left you home alone while she ran a quick errand. You didnt mind that of course, so you stayed home to play with dolls. Long story short, a bird flew in and decided to nest in your (y/c/h) hair. You shivered a bit at the memory before continuing your walk through town.
--
You ended up stopping at a few different places, and avoiding every bird in your path, but you finally made it to the main road back home. You smiled a bit to yourself as you looked down at what you had purchased, though you did end up picking up a few extra things, such as dresses and whatnot. You looked at your basket and picked out an apple, taking a good bite from it as you began to walk down the dirt road. You smiled to yourself as you continued your walk, enjoying your apple as you went.
You looked around your surroundings, smiling a bit when you saw a flock of sheep in the distance. Honestly, they looked like little fluffy clouds out in the field. Well... if clouds smelled bad. And made sounds. You shrugged before continuing your walk. You had quite a ways to go, but you didnt mind a little fresh air. Ah, a little fresh air and a good few miles of road.
You continued to glance around, just playing eye-spy with yourself to pass the time. A huff left your mouth after a few minutes, "Dad could have just gone himself... he's got his wagon, why did I have to go on foot?" you sighed again, "Go take a walk, he said. It'll be fun, he said. It'll be relaxing, he said." you rolled your eyes at that, "Yeah right, relaxing my butt. I could be even more relaxed taking a nap, or heck! I'd rather read a book! You hear that? I'd rather read a book!" You yelled out to no one in particular. Only the sheep seemed to respond with a few 'baas'
You sighed as you kicked a rock as you continued your 'tiring trek.' You glanced around again to see if there was anything interesting to pass the time with, but of course, no avail. Stupid thousand mile hike. you thought to yourself. Of course, it wasn't a thousand miles... more like only three. But hey, to someone who didnt get much sleep last night, it would seem like a lot more.
Your walk continued until your spotted a stray... donkey. You furrowed your brows a bit as you approached the creature. It was just grazing on the side of the road, and it looked very... well, it looked familiar. You looked at it a bit more before noticing a certain scratch on it's ear, "Maria?" you asked, slight shock in your tone, "What are you away from home, old girl?" you asked, though of course the donkey couldn't respond. You furrowed your brows a bit again before you began to lead the creature down the road to your home.
As you walked, you noticed a shape in the distance. You furrowed your brows a bit at the shape, seeing as it was too far away to make it out clearly. You kept a hold on Maria as you got closer to the shape, finally seeing that it was a broken down wagon. Wait. You froze. A wagon? You had heard about a wagon crashing earlier, could this be it? But, then why was Maria here and- Oh gods. You dropped your hand from the donkey before running over to said wagon.
"Dad! Dad!" You called out as you ran up to it, finding your elderly father under it, "Oh shit." you muttered before sliding down on your knees beside your father, "Dad, dad look, its gonna be okay, alright?" you assured him as tears began to well up in your eyes, "I'll get you out of here, I promise." you whispered down to him as you tried your best to pry the thing up.
"Y/n." Your father muttered, followed by a wheeze, "I'll be alright." he whispered between wheezes.
More tears began to well up in your eyes, beginning to fall as you clawed away at the structure holding your father down, "No, no, cmon, I've already lost mom, I cant loose you too." you whispered as tears streamed down your face, continuing to pry at the wood, only resulting in splinters under your nails, just adding to the tears in your eyes.
Your father's breathing could be heard getting worse, seeing as the wagon had landed right on top of him, "Y/n..." was all he could mutter before he coughed again, taking his final breath
"No!" You yelled out, continuing to pry at the wagon with your now bloody fingers, "No, no, come on!!" after a few more minutes of yelling and clawing, you gave up, just collapsing on the ground in sobs. Your basket had been thrown to the floor, the fruit spilled everywhere, and the dresses covered with dirt, "I'm sorry..." you whispered through the sobs, "I'm sorry, dad." you whispered, not daring to glance over at his lifeless body.--
It seemed that hours had passed, and you hadn't heard a sound beside your own sobs. You sniffed, rubbing your nose with the back of your hand before curling up into a tighter ball. You just wanted to sleep... forever. Get away from the unfairness of life. You sniffed again before looking up at your father, resulting in more sobs.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here, ah? Another grieving situation, geez, cry me a river, babe." a voice from behind you spoke.
You sat up and quickly wiped your now red and puffy eyes, and sniffled again, "Who are you? What do you want?" you spoke, quietly, but trying to sound as confident as possible.
"Names Hades, Lord of the Dead, and please, do me a favor and save me the sobs. Look, I'm just here to check on dead people, alright? Boring I know, but hey, I didnt exactly have a choice in that." Hades muttered as he simply walked past you to look at the limp body, motioning with his hand, sending the wagon off him.You sniffled again as you turned to look at the god, "You- You like making deals, right?" you asked as you wiped your nose before standing up. Now, your dress was covered in dirt, but you didnt pay any mind. You had a deal to make.
"And what would a kid like you want to make a deal for, hm?" Hades asked, not even looking at you, just focusing on a clipboard he had in his hands
"Bring him back to life." you stated simply as you pointed to your father.
Hades chuckled at that before looking down at you, "Ha! Really, its not that simple, babe. The Underworld runs on souls, so if ya wanna take one, you've gotta give one, got it?"
"Then take my soul." you muttered up to him before wiping your eyes of tears
The god rose a brow at that, "Your soul, in exchange for your dear old pop's, is that right?" he paused, "Well, hey, either way, I get a soul, the Underworld continues to run without a hitch..." he trailed off, continuing to talking to himself before looking back to you, "Deal." he whispered with a smirk as he held his hand out
You took a deep breath at that. This was your once chance to get him back... it'd be worth it, right? Maybe he'd be nice, let you off the hook at certain times or-
"Look, babe, I'd really like to get on with this, alright? I dont have all day." He seethed as he shook his hand a bit, flames flickering orange for a second.
You took another deep breath before forcing yourself to reach out and shake his hand. Hades garbled on and shook your hand firmly with a wide smirk. A glow came from within both your hands before he let go, a satisfied grin on his lips.
"Hey, welcome to team Hades!" he said triumphantly as your father sat up... true to Hades' deal, he was alive again, "I expect ya in the Underworld bright an early tomorrow, I'll give ya today to pack up your things, alright? Alright, great. Ciao, babe." he said with a satisfied smirk before disappearing in a puff of smoke
You just stood there in shock. You felt weird, like something was missing. Hades did own your soul after all. You sighed before glancing at your now living, and quite confused, father. Oh gods... what did you get yourself into?
