He held babies and played with kids, he hunted meat, he chopped fire wood, he patched roofs and dug holes and fought demons while Sango and Miroku repeatedly assured him Kagome would return while he tried to wave off their concern and keep himself occupied.
Maybe they were right. Maybe the well hadn't closed her away forever. Maybe it would open up eventually.
But if it did, why would she come through it?
