Part Two

Xander was up until after midnight texting with Spike. Spike helped Xander with the back to school jitters even though Xander hadn't told him about Larry. How could he tell Spike about that? They've known each other less than twelve hours. The last thing Xander wanted was for Spike to have to deal with his baggage just because Larry was a head case.

When Xander got home he had told his parents his problem with Larry. He didn't know why he even bothered because they're solution was to just date the boy. What was the point of being openly gay if you weren't interested in dating? Also Larry was the most popular kid in Sunnydale if Xander didn't want to date him he could deal with the consequences.

It was now eight thirty in the morning and Xander was trying to get the energy to get out the door. He was excited to see Spike but he hated school so much. He didn't have any friends after Jesse left. He had another childhood friend Willow but after she started dating a guitarist in a local band called 'Dingo's Ate My Baby' she didn't have time for him anymore. She life consisted of school and being a groupie. It sucked at first but now Xander just didn't care.

"If I get a call that you were late on the first day of school you're going to have to deal with your father," Jessica said as she watched Maury Povich.

"Thank, mom. I hope you have a good day of drinking," Xander replied before walking out. He heard his mother cursing after him. He'd be paying for that tonight.

It wasn't a long walk to the school and it was easy to find Spike standing in the crowd. He was surrounded by a large group. Spike was going to be popular, it didn't look like he was going to need Xander. So instead of joining the group Xander just walked passed. He almost made it into the school before being pulled pack. Sure it was Larry Xander turned to tell him to fuck off. Luckily he didn't because it was Spike.

"Thought you were going to show me around?" Spike asked, confusion written on his face.

"Figured you'd get one of your fans to do that," Xander said. All eyes were on all of them.

Spike lightly punched Xander on the shoulder. "Don't be daft."

Having a feeling that being friends with Spike was not going to be as easy as he thought Xander just nodded. "Come on."

It didn't take long to show Spike the school. The office, gym, pool and sauna and of course the rooms Spike would be going to. They found out they had the same homeroom which made Spike excited.

They walked into their homeroom, tables were pushed together so it was like you would have a partner. Spike grabbed Xander's arm and dragged him to a pair of tables that were unoccupied.

"This is great. I can whisper sweet nothings in your ear," Spike said happily.

Xander rolled his eyes and sat down. "You have no problems saying what you want do you?"

"Why would I? How would you know what I want if I don't tell you?" Spike asked. He sat down and brought his feet up to rest on his table.

Larry walked in and froze when he saw Xander sitting with the new kid. And they looked chummy. His eyes narrowed he didn't like this. He'd heard that the new kid was bisexual and obviously had intentions towards Xander that wasn't just friendly. He was going to stop this before anything could happen.

Walking over Larry stopped in front of Spike. "Hey, you're new here, right?"

Spike stopped talking and looked up at Larry. "Yeah."

"You look like a good guy so I'm going to give you some advice. If you want your senior year you be one of the best years of your life I suggest not hanging out with Harris," Larry told him. He saw Xander scowl at him.

"Why's that?" Spike asked suspiciously.

Larry smiled. "Did you see anyone else talk to him besides you?"

Spike frowned and realized not a single person greeted Xander but almost everyone tried to interact with him.

"Larry, don't you have some steroids you need to take before football practice?" Xander made a shooing motion with his hand.

Larry ignored him. "All I'm saying is if you don't want to be a target of some... friendly hazing I think you should have lunch with me and my friends. I'm sure in your last school you saw people with potential lose any chance of people cool by the company they kept."

Spike had seen it more than just once. What the hell was he supposed to do? He really liked Xander but he didn't give up everything to be bullied.

"Come sit with me and I'll introduce you to the others later," Larry offered.

Sending Xander an apologetic look he stood and went to grab his bag but the teacher came in and stopped him.

"Where you're stuff is, is where you'll sit for the rest of the school year," Ms. Fletcher said. When Spike didn't move she pointed to the empty seat. "Plant it." She turned to Larry. "Find a seat."

Xander's jaw clenched as Spike sat back down. His first instinct of Spike was right. Just another asshole.

As Ms. Fletcher told them they'd be getting called to collect their text books Spike hid his phone and texted Xander. '14th Ave. SE apt. 5B. I'll explain.'

Making sure Ms. Fletcher's back was facing the class Xander replied. 'So much for wanting to whisper sweet nothings to me.'

'I'm a twat I know, just give me a chance. Please.'

Xander didn't respond.

The morning went by and the next thing Xander knew it was lunch. He walked into the lunchroom and saw most of the tables were taken. There was one table available but it was by the trash cans and the lunch of the day was fish sticks. Xander hated fish. Lucky for him his dad said it was a waste of money to buy food from the school when they had perfectly good food at home. Bologna and cheese sandwiches were in Xander's future for the next week. Bologna would always beat fish.

As he ate he watched Spike with Larry and the other athletes and cheerleaders. Like everyone else that met Spike in the morning they all fawned over him. Xander rolled his eyes when he realized he was just like the rest of them.

Lunch was almost over, Xander stood up to throw his garbage away. He should have been paying attention if he had been he would have been prepared for the garbage dump. Larry's leftover food had been mushed together, fish sticks and jello ran down his head into his shirt thanks to the milk and soda added to the mix.

"I'm so sorry," Larry said insincerely. "I thought you were the trash can." The jocks, high-fived each other, the cheerleaders giggled, the other students laughed mostly because they were thankful it wasn't them and then there was Spike. He was standing there absolutely shocked.

Xander wiped off as much as he could from his hair and face. He wouldn't give Larry the satisfaction of embarrassing him. "It's fine, I mean you can't get too mad at someone who has the I.Q of a lima bean I can understand your confusion. I hear eating more fish makes you smarter. I don't think they mean fish sticks though. You should do some research on it."

There were a few chuckles which made Larry's face redder than it already was. How could Xander treat him like this after everything he wanted to give him? "You better watch yourself." Larry got in Xander's face causing him to stumble back into the garbage bins and tumbling on to them. There was a squish and Xander now had food on how pants.

"Break it up!" Principal Synder said coming out from the sidelines. "Classes start back up in ten minutes." He looked at Larry and Spike thought he was going to do something. "First day of training, the first game is in three weeks. You're going to get me another trophy before graduation, right?"

Spike's mouth fell open. Was this actually happening?

"You know it," Larry replied. "I'm going out a champion."

"That a boy." Snyder slapped Larry on the arm before waving it around worried he had just broken it. "Harris, always the trouble maker. You have seven minutes to shower and get into clean clothes. If you're one second late for your next class, you'll have detention for the rest of the week."

Xander was starting the school year off strong. Standing up with absolutely no assistance he carefully made his way out of the cafeteria, leaving a trail of mashed food behind him.

When Xander disappeared Spike went up to Larry. "What the bloody hell was that about?"

"Don't worry about it, man. Just know he deserves everything coming to him." Larry smiled before heading to his next class.

Spike frowned but followed. His parents really should have agreed to L.A. But than he wouldn't have met Xander. What had he gotten himself into in this damn town?

Xander ended up five minutes late to his History class earning him the week detention Snyder had promised. Xander used that time to figure out if he would meet up with Spike or not. Did he really want to? While Mr. Baylor looked at skin magazines Xander read through his texts with Spike. Sure, he had an arrogance about him but he had also been sweet.

What was there to even talk about? Spike made his choice. Popularity was more important to him no matter what. Xander had more integrity than that. It was decided Xander was not going to go talk to Spike. He put his phone back in his pocket. Out of sight out of mind.

But what if what Spike had to say was good? After the lunch incident he'd have had to change his opinion on being friends with Larry, right? He looked at the clock on the wall, only a couple more minutes and he'd be out of there.

"I can't believe I got stuck with babysitting duty. I want to go home," Mr. Baylor the gym teacher complained. He stood and stretched. "Get the fuck out of here."

Xander jumped out of his seat. "Has anyone ever told you, you're a great guy?"

"No," Mr. Baylor replied gruffly.

"Doesn't surprise me." Xander rushed out the door. He was making friends everywhere he went today.
