The Dark Mistake Comes to Call

Chapter 2

"Everyone move, GO GO GO!"

Cin Drallig barked at the others as the ran to the temple doors. All around them, blinding smoke billowed, and flames blazed. Barriss had never seen the temple like this. She couldn't help but wonder if the Order had felt like this during the Jedi-Sith Wars.

"Master, Look Out!"

Dooku's shouting brought her out of her musing, as she saw a pillar about to fall on Yoda. The old Grandmaster noticed it as well, and using the force, he managed to catch the falling structure, and toss it safely aside.

"Move swiftly, we must! Unsafe, the temple now is."

He didn't have to say that twice. The other Jedi ran as fast as they could, make it to the doors and out to safety. But safety did not come with pleasure. For outside it was clear, not every Jedi had made it out unscathed.

"Master Yoda!"

That shouting belonged to Master Windu.

"Yes Mace.

"Thank goodness you made it out safely. The fire crew is on it's way, and so is a medical team."

Yoda nodded,"How many injured are their?"

"We're still getting the exact numbers, but several hundred at least.

"Hmm. And deceased?"

Mace sighed somberly. "At least 50, and most likely more, and that's not counting the civilian workers. Not everyone who escaped will survive their injuries. We also have at least 20 Jedi unaccounted for."

Yoda nodded sadly, and stroked his chin.

"Whoever planned this attack, desired to cause the Jedi pain, it is clear, that they did. Successful they were. Now, figure out who they where, and why they did this, we must. Meet in the courtyard the Council will."

"The courtyard, Master?"

"Damaged and inaccessible, the Council Chamber will be. So, once under control, the flames are, meet in the courtyard, we shall.

"The damage was extensive Master's."

Barriss stood in front of the High Council along with Master's Dooku, Cin Drallig, Sinube, and Quinlan Vos. A Majority of the Council was there as well, save for Master Skywalker, who was on Naboo with his wife, and Master Mundi, who was on a mission with his Padawan. They both appeared in holograms.

"How extensive, Master Drallig," asked Windu.

"Extremely, Master Windu. The only area unscathed is the Vault, and even it's door received considerable damage as a result of the explosions."

"Indeed," put in Dooku. "Who ever planned this did so well, for not only did they place multiple explosives within the Temple, they set the to go of at the perfect moment. And that is what is most troubling."

"What do you mean," question Master Plo Koon.

"Master's," said Vos. "This attack was clearly planned in a way to maximize devastation. The explosives were set to go off at a time when there would be multiple people with in their blast radii."

"And to make matters worse," added Sinube, "the blasts destroyed all security cameras and footage, meaning we have no way of determining the identity's of the culprits."

"Despite this, one thing is clear," said Drallig. "Whoever planned this must have had extensive knowledge and access to the Temple, meaning that at least one of their members has to be a Jedi."

The Council was in shock at this declaration, before Windu spoke.

"It would not be the first time."

"Windu," interrupted Skywalker, "I thought we agreed not to talk about that event from now on."

"I'm aware that was a difficult time for your Skywalker, but the fact's point to a Jedi being involved, and we must consider all possibilities."

"We could be jumping to conclusions," Skywalker shot back. "We don't no if it's her or any other Jedi for that matter, it could be anyone. We can't just assume."

"I'm aware of your concern, Anakin," Master Kenobi said solemnly, "and nobody is saying she is involved. But Mace is right. Until we have more data, everyone is a suspect."

Barriss squirmed at were the conversation had gone. It made her uncomfortable, though as to why, no one could tell for sure, though Master Yoda noticed her discomfort.

"Knight Offee, have anything to add, do you?"

Barriss looked at the Grandmaster's solemn face, her own trained to show no emotion.

"No Master."

The old Grandmaster reached to stroke his chin.

"Hmm. Concerning, this all is. Still know not the identify of the attackers, we do. But what's more, know not their motives do we. Discover these things, we must. Find the attackers we must, before cause more pain, they can. Guide us in this, the Force shall."

"Excuse me Masters!"

Everyone turned to see Drallig's old Padawan Serra Keto running towards them.

"What is it Serra," inquired her old master.

"There's an urgent message for you all, from the Chancellor himself."

Serra slid a holoprojector to the floor, and from it appeared the image of Bail Organa.

"Master Jedi, it is a pleasure to see you all once more, though I wish it were under far better circumstances."

"Chancellor Organa, a pleasure it is indeed, though truly unfortunate, the circumstances are."

"Indeed, and I must offer my condolences, both for the Jedi and for the civilian workers lost," replied the chancellor.

"Is there something we can do for you chancellor," inquired Mace.

"There is. We received reports of a droid invasion force on Felucia. Lead by General Grievous."

"Grievous." That voice belonged to Kenobi, a mixture of both disgust and perplexity in his voice.

"So the coward finally decides to show his face," muttered Skywalker darkly.

"Indeed," replied Organa. "We require the assistance of the Jedi to end this threat. This time, Grievous must not escape. He has already caused the Republic far to much pain."

"Understood, we do, Chancellor. See to it that Grievous is brought to justice, we shall."

The Chancellor nodded as the holo-call came to an end.

"Permission to go General-hunting, Masters," asked Kenobi.

"Permission denied, Kenobi," snapped Mace.

"Denied!"

"Welcome to my world, Master," chuckled Skywalker.

"A point well made, Mace has, Obi-Wan," said Yoda. "Too personal, this matter is for you. Besides, need you here along with the rest of the council to help with the investigation, we do."

"Master, I was the one who failed to capture Grievous, multiple times. I am the one who should be making amends for my previous shortcomings," Obi-Wan insisted.

"The answer is no, Kenobi" replied Mace flatly.

"My Padawan and I are near Felucia," said Ki-Adi. "We can be there in within the hour."

"Go then, you shall."

"If I may interject Masters," interpreted Dooku. "Has anyone wondered how Grievous has managed to amass an army? After all, since the war came to an end, all battle droids were shut down and either reprogrammed or scrapped."

"A find point you make, my old padawan. Take this into consideration, we must."

"I hate to be the one to point out another problem, Masters," said Vos, "but if we send only two Jedi to deal with Grievous and his troops, they'll be outnumbered. I'd be surprised if they both came back in one piece."

"In that case, allow me to martial the 212th to provide some assistance," replied Kenobi with a wry smirk on his face.

"The 212th is no where near Felucia or Coruscant right know, Kenobi, and what part of no do you not understand," snapped Mace.

Kenobi shrugged his shoulders, "It was worth a try."

All this time, Barriss felt more and more compelled to go to Felucia, as if it were calling her, begging her to come.

"Masters, please, allow me to go," she insisted. "The 41st Legion is currently on Coruscant. I know my old Master is out on assignment, but I can lead them."

"Knight Offee," began Mace, in a slightly annoyed tone, "now is the time for..."

"Please Masters! I don't no why, but I feel the Force is calling me to go. I need to find out why. I must go!"

The Council was silent for a moment. Then Yoda spoke.

"If the will of the Force it is, go you must. Assist Master Mundi, you shall. Successful, this mission must be. Defeat Grievous, you must, so as to insure that never come, another war does."
