_[ STORY ]_
Rex knew this assignment had been a bad idea the moment it'd been given to him; the Outer Rim was an unknown beast, and to top it off, Rex and his team had to touch down on a Force forsaken jungle world filled with who knows what. So galavanting after a group of scientists that had vanished was not his idea of fun. But with both General Skywalker and Commander Tano away from the Resolute, it fell to Rex to do it.
So reluctantly, gut screaming the absurdity of this endeavor, Rex set foot out of the transport onto the lush grass. His first impression of the place was that it seemed to be like any other tropical world: high humidity, lots of green, and probably many wild, dangerous critters crawling around. The thought sent a shiver up the Captain's spine. Rex headed to the scientist's last known location; approaching the transport craft carefully, he found the site abandoned and most of the equipment intact.
"Captain," Rex jumped as the com came to life; he berated himself for being so on edge.
"Rex here, go ahead, Pacer."
"Sir, Slingshot, and I found the missing team," Pacer said, "they're all dead; I'm sending the coordinates now."
"On my way," Rex acknowledged disconnecting the com.
Walking by the open cargo bay, a loud banging erupted followed by growls and hissing, "what theā¦" withdrawing his gun, Rex stepped up the ramp.
The dark interior held no welcome; once inside, he activated the light on his helmet; as he scanned, the beam of light fell upon a cage with a bristling green beast, bearing yellowed teeth. The creature hissed and started to make a choking noise; before the Captain could comprehend what any of it could mean, something flew into his chest plate. Taking a step back, he looked down and saw the gooey mess starting to blister the armor; the choking sound came again, and Rex felt the impact of more slime.
Turning Rex bolted outside as he attempted to remove the damaged armor, he felt another hit connect with the back of his helmet. Once off, fumes from the chemical reaction made themselves known, Rex became dizzy and fell into the dirt black playing at the edge of his sight; he activated his com before succumbing to the darkness.
Rex felt fuzzy as he woke up, and his nose hurt; a slow beeping above his head had him look above him to see a small glowing screen, but with the room darkened and his head aching, he couldn't make out the words.
Rex went to reach for the screen, and panic set in when he realized his arms seemed to be pinned down. Lifting his head as high as the chest restraint would allow, Rex found himself completely immobilized, strapped to a stiff bed, and could feel the plastic tube that was hurting his nose feeding air into his lungs.
He started pulling and thrashing, attempting to find a weakness in the electric blue binding; the more Rex struggled, the faster the line on the small screen went, and the louder the beeping became. Footfall echoed outside the room; the door burst open, lights coming alive as Kix rushed in.
"Rex, calm down," the medic scolded, "you need to relax," he calmly added, placing his hands on either shoulder of the Captain.
The contact cleared some of the fog from Rex's brain, and he stopped to stare at his brother, "that's it, nice and easy," Kix said, "sorry no one was here when you woke up, we just didn't know when that would be."
"What...what happened..."
"I'll deactivate the restraints first, then we can talk," Kix said, hitting a few buttons hidden out of Rex's view, and the blue restraints disappeared.
Rex stretched before propping himself up, "try standing up, and you'll end up on your face," Kix smirked, "again."
"Is that why..."
Kix noded, "plus hallucinations from your encounter with the creature you found; we are still analyzing what could have had such a reaction, but we know it is what caused the science team to kill each other." Kix explained, pushing Rex back, "the hallucinations must have been vivid. You kept fighting us; Jesse has a broken nose from a stray left hook."
Rex's eyes grew, shock upon his face; the medic chuckled, "go back to sleep. We can talk more later on; we are meeting up with the general early. He heard what happened and is worried, so I better tell him you are awake," Kix added, heading to the door; he lowered the lights, leaving Rex to his thoughts and then the void of sleep.
