I forgot to add this to my first chapter, but I own nothing. I am just playing around.
Rory sat listening to Jess with rapt attention. He was telling her about his life, growing up without a dad, and having a mom that had priorities other than him. She couldn't believe how similar their lives were, and she silently thanked her mom for always being there for her. She had always taken for granted her support system. Jess's story showed her how different her life could have been.
She picked up her phone. Without thinking she scrolled to Logan's name and checked to see if he had received her messages. They still sat undelivered. In her heart she knew she made the right decision, but she was happy to have it confirmed.
Jess noticed her preoccupation. He wasn't sure how to help. Before he could ask Rory sat up straighter, put her glass down, and started to get up. "I should really go find a room. It's late, and I don't want to deal with Logan tonight."
Jess jumped up beside her and reached out to steady her. The drinks seemed to hit her all at once and she wobbled for a moment before regaining her balance.
"I can't let you go by yourself. I promised to make sure you got a room. Let go grab your stuff and see what we can do."
Rory didn't really want him coming to the suite with her, but she was worried she would run into Logan. After a moment she agreed. They settled their bill and made their way to the elevator.
The doors opened to reveal the man she had thought she loved holding on to Bobby as if they did this every day. He didn't even notice her at first.
"Unfucking believable!" Rory shouted.
Both Logan and Jess turned to her in surprise. Logan tried to push Bobby away, but she was clinging to him. It seemed like she had been hoping this exact thing would happen.
"Look, Rory, nothing's going on. We had a few too many drinks at dinner, and I was just escorting Bobby to her room." Logan tried to explain.
"Logan, how stupid do you think I am? I can see what is going on here."
"Ace" he started to say as he came toward her.
"Don't you touch me you scumbag. The signs have always been there that we weren't right together, and you just confirmed everything I already knew." As she backed away from him, she pulled out her wallet and dumped the contents of her change pocket all over the floor. "That ugly ring you gave me is somewhere on the floor. You'd better find it before someone else does."
Rory swept past a stunned Logan and Bobby and gestured to Jess. "Are you coming?"
He tipped his head toward Logan, stepped around the mess on the floor and went to join Rory.
Jess leaned toward Logan and murmured, "I'd stay away from your room for the next 10 minutes. If you try to give Rory any problems it won't be pretty." He smirked at Logan, who was staring after them in disbelief, before pressing the door close button.
Rory was in shock. She knew the relationship wouldn't have worked, but that doesn't mean that she wanted to stumble over the proof in the lobby of the Venetian hotel either.
Jess stood next to her silently. He knew she needed time to process what had just gone down. They got to the penthouse suite she had been sharing with Logan and he whistled under his breath. He had a feeling the guy had money, but when he saw where they were staying he was impressed. He had thought the suite his publisher had put him up in was luxurious, but after seeing this he knew that it wasn't as opulent as he had first imagined.
Rory pushed past him and started opening drawers and closets, gathering all of Logan's clothing in her arms. He had no idea what she was doing.
"That bastard is so fucking worried about appearances and impressions. It's going to be hard for him to impress anyone when all of this is ruined." Rory ranted as she went into the bathroom with her load. He began to laugh as she threw it into the shower and turned on the water.
She came out much calmer and began to pack her bags.
"Remind me to stay on your good side," he said, still chuckling.
"It's really pretty easy, don't be an ass." She replied with a sly smile.
Jess knew most guys would bolt after her little outburst, but it just made him want to know her better. He had respect for a woman that stood up for herself and didn't take anyone's shit.
"I'm 2 floors down. Let's drop your bag there and go check out a casino. You look like you need to let loose a little."
Rory was unsure, she didn't want to give him the wrong idea about their relationship. He noticed her hesitation and rushed to reassure her. "We can still get you a room, or you can stay in mine. It has a pull out couch in the sitting room. I just figured we could go have some fun."
She thought for another moment, then turned to him. "Sounds like a plan, but I don't feel like gambling. Let's check out a club."
She could tell he hated that idea, but she wasn't giving in. Sure she wasn't much of a partier, but tonight she was going to be different. She was going to do all the things she hadn't during college because she was busy doing everything Logan expected.
Before they left the room she darted into the bathroom and shut the door. She came out a few minutes later in a black romper covered in neon flowers and a pair of sky high heels. Her hair was loose and flowing and she looked even more stunning than she had in the bar.
Jess knew going out with her was asking for trouble, but at this point he didn't care. While she was changing he had made a few calls and got put on a list for the club in the Venetian, Tao. He rarely took advantage of his status, but tonight he was going to milk it for all he was worth.
The two of them went down to the club, and were whisked to the front of the line. The people waiting were gossiping and point at the two of them. Cameras flashed. Jess held on to her hand and pulled her along.
"You better have the time of your life tonight. I've ruined my reputation as a reclusive genius by bringing you here." He grumbled as they were ushered to their table in the VIP area.
Rory was used to the finer things. She had been with Logan for years, but going out with Jess was completely different. Logan came from a background of refined wealth. Jess was a celebrity, people gawked and pointed as they passed by.
"I knew you were a big deal, but I really had no idea how famous you were." she said once they were seated.
Jess shrugged it off. "When I was first on the scene, it wasn't so bad. Then I made the 100 sexiest men and everything went to hell in a hand basket. I wish people knew who I was based on my writing, and not on my looks."
Rory sat quietly, thinking about what he had said. She knew she shouldn't compare the two men, but the differences between them was startling. Jess wanted to be known for his work. Logan would have loved being a celebrity based on nothing more than his boyish charm and looks.
She slid her phone out of her purse and promptly dropped it in surprise. There were dozens of missed calls and texts, all from Logan. She sighed and showed the screen to Jess.
"I guess he realized he was in deep shit with that stunt he pulled. Let's turn off the phone for tonight. Nothing good can come from talking to him right now." Jess remarked.
Rory agreed, but deep down she felt bad. Not because she wanted to go back to him, but because she wasn't missing him at all.
