A/N: Chapter 2 hot off the press. It is currently 11:32pm while I edit this. I've just stared writing chapter 3, but it will probably be a while before I can finish it and edit it. Hopefully it will be done and posted by Sunday night. Keep your eyes peeled for it!
Angela woke up with a groan. She looked at her alarm clock and shut her eyes again. She had Saturday detention. She had avoided her parents the day before and hadn't told them about her fight and subsequent detention. It wasn't unusual for her to be gone first thing in the morning, so she dressed quickly and climbed out her window. She didn't want to run the risk that Adam was passed out in the living room.
She only lived a few minutes from the school, so she shouldered her bag and headed that way. She noticed as she neared the building that quite a few other people were serving detention too. In fact, there were five other students making their way into or to the school. She reached the steps the same time as another girl. Angela looked at her and realized that it was the girl she bumped into leaving the day before. The girl squeaked and quickly made her way into the building.
"This is gonna be interesting…" she muttered as she headed towards the library.
As Angela walked into the library she saw a nerdy looking kid moving from one table to another as none other than John Bender motioned for him to move. The basket case from this morning rushed past her, around the back of the statue, to sit at the table farthest away. Angela sighed as she plopped down at the table behind Bender. She hadn't missed how everyone, including Bender, had watched her until she sat down. They didn't have to wait long before Mr. Vernon walked into the library.
"Well, well. Here we are. I want to congratulate you for being on time," he said as he crossed his arms and stood in front of the group of students.
"Excuse me, sir? I think there has been a mistake," said Claire as she raised her hand. "I know it's detention but, um, I don't think I belong in here."
Vernon rolled his eyes at her statement before checking his watch, "It is now 7:06. You have exactly eight hours and fifty-four minutes to think about why you're here. Ponder the error of your ways."
At this point Bender hocked a loogie into the air before catching it again in his mouth. Claire gasped before turning back to face the front while Angela just rolled her eyes and tried to ignore him.
"You may not talk," he said pointing at Claire and Andrew. "You will not move from these seats," he said as Brian started to swap seats. "And you...you will not sleep," he said, jerking the chair out from under Bender's feet. "All right, people, we're going to try something a little different today," he said as he shuffled a stack of papers in his hand. "We are going to write an essay, of no less than a thousand words, describing to me who you think you are," he said as he passed out the paper and pencils.
"Is this a test?" asked Bender.
Vernon ignored him and kept talking. "And when I say essay, I mean essay. I do not mean a single word repeated a thousand times. Is that clear, Mr. Bender?"
"Crystal," muttered Bender.
"Good. Maybe you'll learn something about yourself," said Vernon. "Maybe you'll decide whether or not you care to return."
"Uh, I can answer that right now, sir," said Brian raising his hand and standing slightly. "That'd be no for me, 'cause-"
"Sit down, Johnson," said Vernon.
"Thank you, sir," said Brian as he sat back down.
Angela rolled her eyes at Brian's need to please any adult he came into contact with. She rolled the pencil around the desk a few times before she picked it up and twirled it in her fingers.
"My office is right across that hall. Any monkey business is ill-advised," said Vernon pointing to the library doors. Any questions?"
Everyone shook their head or kept quiet. Angela sighs as she raises her hand. "Are you actually going to read these essays or is this just your way of hoping we will occupy ourselves for the next seven and a half hours so you can ignore us?"
"I'll tell you this now, don't try me young lady," said Vernon as he glared at her.
"I have a question," said Bender with a smirk on his face. "Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?"
"I'll give you the answer to that question, Mr. Bender, next Saturday," replied Vernon. "Don't mess with the bull, young man, you'll get the horns," he said before walking out of the room.
"That man is a brownie hound," said Bender.
Angela rolled her eyes as she glanced down at the paper in front of her. She sighed again as she looked around at the people she was sharing detention with. She looked to her left and saw the basket case chewing on her nails, loudly.
"Keep eating your hand, you're not gonna be hungry for lunch," said Bender as Allison continued to chew on her nails.
Angela chuckled to herself as she watched Brian put his jacket back on when Bender stared at him as he took his jacket off. Bender tore his paper and crumpled it up before tossing it between Claire and Andrew. Both students turned to look at him before turning back to the front. Bender rolled his eyes before he started humming and playing air guitar.
"I can't believe this is really happening to me," said Claire.
"Oh, shit!" exclaimed Bender. "What are we supposed to do if we have to take a piss?"
"Please," said Claire as she rolled her eyes.
"If you gotta go, you gotta go," said Bender as he leaned forward on the table and unzipped his pants.
Angela couldn't help herself as she giggled a little at his antics. She had a pretty good idea that he spent most of his Saturdays in detention and knew what happened if you had to pee.
"You're not urinating in here, man," said Andrew as he turned around to face Bender. "Shh-shh, don't talk. Don't talk," said Bender, with a look of concentration on his face. "It makes it crawl back up."
Angela giggled again when she noticed Brian trying to see if Bender really was trying to pee in the library.
"Psst...Brian…" said Angela quietly.
Brian turned around and looked at her while he pointed his finger at his chest. "Me?"
"Your name is Brian, right?" she whispered again.
"Yeah," he said.
"Stop staring, he'll think you like him," she said with a giggle.
Brian quickly turned his head forward and refused to look over at Bender and Andy.
"You whip it out, you're dead before the first drop hits the floor," said Andy.
Angela rolled her eyes. Leave it to the jock to want to use violence to solve problems.
"You're pretty sexy when you're angry," said Bender before letting out a sexy growl. "Hey, homeboy, why don't you go close that door," he said, turning his attention to Brian. "We'll get the prom queen impregnated. Or this hoodlum," he said motioning to Angela, "I'm not picky."
Brian and Clair quickly turned to look at Bender while he made eyes at Claire Angela grabbed her nail clippers out of her bag before throwing them at Bender's head..
"Hey! Hey!" said Andy. "If I lose my temper, you're totaled, man."
"Totally?" said Bender sarcastically as he pocketed the clippers.
"Totally," said Andy with a serious look on his face.
"Why don't you shut up? Nobody here's interested," said Claire.
"Really, buttface," said Andy as he turned around in his seat.
"Hey, sporto, what'd you do to get in here? Forget to wash your jock?" asked Bender sarcastically.
"Uh, excuse me, fellas, I think we should just write out papers," said Brian.
"Shh, Brian, this may be our only form of entertainment for a while," said Angela tossing a ball of paper at Brian's head.
"Just because you live in here doesn't give you the right to be a pain in the ass," said Andy turning back around. "So, knock it off!"
"It's a free country," said Bender.
"He's just doing it to get a rise out of you. Just ignore him," said Claire.
"Sweets," said Bender, getting Claire's attention. "You couldn't ignore me if you tried."
Clair rolled her eyes as she turned around.
"So...so...are you guys like boyfriend-girlfriend?" asked Bender obnoxiously. "Lovers? Come on, sporto. Level with me. Do you slip her the hot-beef injection?"
"Go to hell!" "Enough!" shouted Claire and Andy at the same time.
"Oh, shit…" muttered Angela as she watched this all happen.
She glanced down at her paper and realized that it was already half a page long. She hadn't realized that she was writing while she listened to the conversations around her. She looked up again when she heard Vernon shout across the hall.
"What do you say we close that door?" Bender said as he stood up. "We can't have any kind of party with Vernon checking us every few seconds," he said as he climbed to sit on the banister.
"You know the door is supposed to stay open," said Brian.
"So what?" said Bender.
"So why don't you shut up," said Andy. "There are four other people in here, you know."
"You know, I thought you could count, but you're wrong," said Bender. "There are five other people in here, or did you forget about little miss silent in the back?" he said, nodding his head towards Angela.
Andy and Claire turned around to look at where Angela was sitting. She glanced up from her paper and waved at them both with a smirk on her face before she flipped them off and turned her attention back to the paper in front of her. Andy and Claire looked at each other and looked slightly ashamed that they forgot there was another person serving detention with them.
"And here I thought you had to be smart to be a wrestler," he said sarcastically.
"Who the hell are you to judge anybody anyways," Andy retaliated.
"Really," said Claire agreeing with Andy.
"You know, Bender, you don't even count. If you disappear forever, it wouldn't make any difference," said Andy.
Angela took this moment to look up and get invested in the conversation.
"You may as well not even exist at this school," continued Andy.
"Well, I'll run right out and join the wrestling team," said Bender.
Angela tuned them out for a few minutes as she pulled her feet up into her seat so she could rest her head on her knees. She knew the comment was directed at the resident criminal, but that is exactly what had happened to her. She had fallen out of touch with any of the friends she'd had growing up, that by the time she had gotten to high school people didn't even know she existed.
"Well, I don't know any lepers either, but I'm not gonna run out and join one of their fucking clubs," said Bender.
"Hey, let's watch the mouth, huh?" said Andy.
"I'm in physics club, too," muttered Brian.
"Excuse me a sec," said Bender before turning his attention to Brian. "What are you babbling about?"
"What I said was that I'm in the Math Club, uh, the Latin Club, and the Physics-Physics Club," Brian said as he counted them off on his fingers.
"Hey, Cherry," said Bender, getting Claire's attention again. "Do you belong to the Physics Club?"
"That's an academic club," she haughtily.
"So?"
"Academic clubs aren't the same as other kinds of clubs," she said.
"Ah, but to dorks like him, they are," said Bender. "What do you guys do in your club?" "In the Phys-physics club, well, we talk about physics. Properties of physics…" said Brian
"So it's sorta social," said Bender looking at Clair. "Demented and sad, but social, right?"
"I guess you could consider it a social situation," said Brian. "Um, I mean, there are other children in my club. And, uh, at the end of the year, we have, um, we have a big banquet at the Hilton."
"You load up. You party," said Bender.
"No, we get dressed up, but we don't get high," said Brian.
"Only burners like you get high," said Clair.
"You got no room to judge anyone," muttered Angela.
"What did you say?" said Clair turning around to face her.
"You've got no room to judge anyone. And with it being a Saturday, you should probably give it a rest. I'm sure you're tired from doing it all week. You and Andy wanna sit there and talk shit about Bender being a burner and a nobody," said Angela. "Saying no one would notice if he disappeared, well guess what Ms. Priss. That's exactly what happened to me. So you can take your hoity-toity, holier than thou attitude somewhere else," she said as she grabbed her bag and walked over to the couches on the other side of the statue.
"You guys keep up your talking and Vernon's gonna come in here," said Andy as he kept glancing at the door. "I got a meet next Saturday, and I'm not gonna miss it on account of you boneheads."
Angela positioned herself so she could see the whole group from her spot on the couch. She grabbed a notebook from her bag and pulled her legs up so she could rest the notebook on them. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she tried to ignore Andy and Bender going at it again as she started to drag her pencil across the page.
