Chapter 2

Subaru was red with rage. This girl, this beautiful girl that he was crushing on, lied to him. And if the reactions around him were anything to go by, she was having him cause quite a scene. How dare she!

"I'll ask again, why did you call me by the name of the Jealous Witch?" Not-Satella muttered.

"You… fucking…" Subaru started muttering, overcome with anger at this girl who he thought he could trust.

"If you've nothing else to say, I'm leaving. I have things to do." She turned to leave, but at that moment, a blonde girl ran right into her, causing her-and Subaru-to be momentarily distracted. Quickly regaining her composure, Silvery frisked herself, noticing that something was missing. While she was inspecting herself, Subaru noticed that she quickly turned yellow, only to turn red again. She turned back to our black and white judge.

"Were you stalling me? Are you an accomplice of hers?" Satella said before going after Felt.

"You lying little…" Subaru couldn't even complete his sentences in this state. Despite no indication of having the ability, Subaru flew up into the air and flew away in frustration. Spotting a familiar alleyway, he descended to catch his breath and reorganize his thoughts, putting the lanterns down beside him.

That ungrateful woman! However, before he could think about what to do, he heard footsteps.

"Well, well, what have we got here?"
"If you don't wanna get hurt, cough up all your money!"

You have GOT to be kidding me. These assholes again?! Wait, I can just time loop if I die, and didn't Nekron and the Entity say something about inheriting their power? Yeah, I got this. These savages are gonna regret messing with me!

With that, Subaru took an aggressive pose, signifying his willingness to fight.

"Oi, what're ya, stupid? It's 3 v 1," the middle one said.

Subaru, however, didn't care for something so trivial, and immediately rushed him, remembering the knives that humiliated him last time. Swiftly disabling his reproductive ability, Subaru went to do the same to the big guy, but he didn't notice the little one and tripped on him.

Damnit! Thinking quickly, Subaru decided to use the little one as a hostage and then beat the big one first. Unfortunately, he failed to notice the middle one get up-albeit slowly and in obvious pain-and pull out his knives. Barely seeing it, Subaru noticed that his neck hurt and he had trouble standing. No! Not...again...Didn't I...receive power? This isn't fair! Subaru struggled to get to his feet, his vision red, but at that moment, he vomited his own blood…

"AHHHHHH!"

...Only for it to land on the arms of the knife-wielder and BURN him.

Not even waiting to comprehend what just happened, Subaru ripped a knife from blue-boy's hands and swiftly stabbed the little one. Unfortunately, his body fell, and he couldn't move. Barely able to turn his head, Subaru saw the big one looking terrified and yellow, hesitantly rising his foot over Subaru's head. NO! Subaru mentally screamed, terrified of his life coming to an end. At that moment, he couldn't remember that he might be immortal, nor could he feel anything other than fear. Frantically, desperately, Subaru struggled to lift his arm, only to shoot a yellow beam at the man's head, blowing it off completely. What the...hell…? In his confusion, he forgot to struggle, and the abyss took him once again.

"Splash"

"Hey, kid! You alright?" someone asked.

"H-huh?" Subaru croaked out, dazed.

"You fainted on me. Here, just take some appas, you look really out of it." the vendor said.

"O-oh, thanks," Subaru said. "I'll be sure to pay you back next time."

"Don't mention it."

Subaru went and sat down on the stone fountain nearby. So, I died...twice. But, what the hell was all that before? I think my blood burned that guy, and I shot a beam of light that erased that other guy's head. And now that I think of it, where are the lanterns?! At this, Subaru looked around in alarm, noticing that his black and white lanterns were missing.

Calm down, boy, Nekron spoke into his mind. Nothing is wrong with us, we're just in a pocket dimension.

Yes, you can summon us at will, the Entity said.

"Well, that's a relief," Subaru sighed. "But what was with all that other stuff, like knowing people's emotions and those other abilities I used on the thugs? Was that you two?"

Yes, the Entity answered. As we said, you have a portion of our power, which includes the seven lights of the emotional spectrum and the black light of death.

"Eh? Emotional spectrum?" Subaru questioned.

Indeed, for in the beginning there was darkness, and in that darkness, I had peace and silence, Neckron explained. But then one day, a light-life-invaded my solitude. I fought it with every fiber of my being, but I could only shatter into seven parts.

Will, hope, fear, love, rage, compassion, and avarice, the Entity finished. As our harold, you can harness these eight lights to varying degrees, so long as our lanterns are present. You need only summon us forth to access our power. You will also wield the lights more effectively as you learn to harness and control your emotions-or lack thereof.

"Ok, I think I got it. And I can see why you wanted to test my resolve in this world, seeing as it hasn't started out well at all. But...while I am annoyed that she lied to me, I can't exactly say it was entirely unreasonable."

Oh, Nekron said. And what reason justifies lying to someone offering to help you?

"Well, I can't say I'm happy about it or anything, but I was a stranger, and she seems like the type of person who doesn't like troubling overs. Considering that reaction earlier, she was probably trying to keep me out of harm's way," Subaru said proudly.

Hmph.

Indeed human, she was demonstrating compassion and fear for your own wellbeing, even if it was mishandled.

"Alright, so now what? If I went back in time, my debt is erased, that much is obvious. I could just use my modern knowledge to live in luxury, that wouldn't be too bad….But then again, she did save me when she was in a hurry, and she tried not to inconvenience me. A person like that will just die to whoever's in that loot house, so...I'd like to save her, and use that to learn her name! After all, I can't just kill them all over one bad day." Subaru spoke, determined. "Alright then, let's go!"

Noting that he'd spent at least an hour catching up with his past-alternate life?-Subaru summoned his lanterns and flew to the heavens. Only briefly stopping to admire the spectacle that was his current self, he jetted off to the slums. De-summoning the lanterns, he asked around for some information.

"Felt's place? It's that way," a homeless man said, pointing in the directions to Felt's casa.

"Thank you!" Subaru shouted as he raced off.

'Doof'

"Ah, my apologies. Are you hurt?" a sultry voice called out.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry, I was in a rush and didn't see you." Opening his eyes, Subaru saw a voluptuous black-haired wearing a rather revealing outfit. Momentarily stunned, Subaru quickly regained his composite. Seeing this, the women wished him a good evening and walked off. With no further distractions, Subaru got back on his original path.

Arriving at what he was certain earlier was Felt's, he noted that the sun was getting close to setting, indicating that he had lost many hours with all that he had been doing. But even more peculiar was the way the place looked. It was a dump, with a broken house and a fallen tree making up for a proper residence. It smelled horrid, too.

"The assassin hasn't been here, have they? I don't see or smell any blood. Hey, FELT!" he called.

Getting no answer, he started to panic until…

"What are you doing in my home?" a voice asked him. Turning around, Subaru saw the blond thief that he had been searching for. Pointing a knife at him (a bit traumatizing, but that could wait).

"Felt you're alive! ...Eh, could you point the knife down, ple-" Before he could finish, Felt started swinging at him.

"Get out of my house!" Felt screamed, trying to slice him open. But Subaru wasn't about to die to something so stereotypical, his pride wouldn't allow it. So he avoided Felt's amateur attacks and quickly leapt on her, pinning her down.

"Listen Felt! I didn't come here for a fight, I came to buy something from you!" Subaru screamed.

"Well, why didn't cha say so? That would've made this easier."

Even though you're the one who attacked me, Subaru thought, but he held his tongue. No use starting another fight.

"Alright," Felth said, getting up, "down the road there's a place where an old codger lives. They call it Old Man Rom's loot house. He can appraise anything you've got to sell to me," Felt said as she started walking.

"Hey, wait up," Subaru yelled as he walked up to Felt.

With the sun now almost completely gone, the duo finally arrived at a run-down shack. Walking up to the door, Felt knocked and waited for something.

"For a rat?" a gruff voice called out.

"Poison," Felt answered.

"For a whale?"

"A harpoon."

"To the dragon we are?"

"Worthless."

"Come in." Hearing this, Felt quickly opened the door and walked inside, Subaru right behind her. Upon entering, he had a moment of panic seeing the giant man...the same one he saw dead in his first life. Equally surprising, the appealing woman from earlier was there as well.

"Old Man Rom, I'm back," Felt announced.

"Welcome back kid. Got anything to sell?" the giant known as Rom asked.

"Indeed, do you have what I asked for?" the woman asked.

"Yeah, I stole it from a noble lady. But you didn't say anything about her using magic!" Felt said, annoyed.

"Ah, my apologies. I do hope that my contractor can properly compensate you...But I didn't expect to see you again," she said, turning to Subaru.

"Y-yeah…" Subaru said, scratching his head awkwardly.

"Oh, you know him," Felt asked. "Seems he's your competitor."
"Is that so?" the woman said, smiling seductively.

"Anyone want a drink?" Rom asked.

"No, thank you," Subaru said.

"Milk, please," the woman requested. Rom poured a glass and gave it to her.

"First off, I think introductions are in order," he said.

"Very well. I am Elsa Granhiert," Elsa introduced.

"Fine then, I'm Subaru Natsuki!" Subaru exclaimed.

"Alright, with that out of the way, what are your offers? Felt asked.

"My employer has offered ten holy coins for this insignia." Elsa produced a sack of coins.

"And you?"

"I don't have any money, per se, but I do have an extremely valuable item,-this!" Subaru pulled out his phone.

"What is it? A metia?" Rom questioned.

"What's it worth?" Felt asked.

"I don't know what a 'metia' is," Subaru answered, "but this is called a phone. Capable of freezing a moment in time!"

"Eh?" Felt and Rom exclaimed simultaneously.

"Here, I'll show you. Step over there." Subaru pointed, and they stood by the counter.

'Flash'

"Ah, my eyes!" Felt exclaimed.

"See? I've saved that moment of you two forever!" Subaru exclaimed, holding the phone up for the three to see. On it was an image of Felt and Rom, identical to a moment ago.

"Wow!" Felt exclaimed.

"A metia like this is worth 20, easily!" Rom said. He and Felt then turned to Elsa, expectantly.

"Oh, my employer did send me here with some additional funds," she said, pulling out a second pouch and putting it on the table.

"18, 19, 20," Rom counted. "Sorry lady, but it looks like this guy beat you out."

Subaru smirked proudly.

"Ah, I suppose it cannot be helped. My employer underpaid me, after all. If I may, what do you intend to do with this insignia?" Elsa asked the ecstatic Subaru.

"Oh, I'm gonna give it back to its owner," Subaru exclaimed gleefully.

Oh shit, Subaru thought, cursing himself for his own stupidity. Elsa licked her lips in a sensual manner.

"So, you're with them." Suddenly, Subaru was pulled off the chair by some force behind him. Looking up, he saw Felt grabbing his collar...he also heard something similar to metal striking something. Looking back, he saw Elsa holding a knife...and that the spot he was just in was almost a murdur scene, with him nearly being the victim.

"Do you want to die or something?" Felt yelled as she pulled Subaru behind her. Moving quickly, Rom got a club from under the bar and ran up to Elsa.

"Get out!"

...But Elsa merely smiled and said, "Thank you for the milk. It was delicious." before cutting open Rom's head with the cup, causing him to fall backwards onto the bar.

"YOU BITCH!" Felt roared. "I won't forgive you even if you say sorry!" Grabbing her knife, Felt rushed past Elsa with speeds no normal kid should be capable of, with Subaru just sitting on the ground, contemplating his next move.

"Ah, I see you're loved by the world. I'm a little envious," Elsa moaned a bit as Felt slashed at her. "Unfortunately for you, those blessed by the world, aren't so lively around me." Elsa quickly performed a vertical slash, causing Felt's blood to splatter all over the walls. Felt fell to the floor, motionless.

"Well," she said, turning to Subaru, " that was fun and all, but I think it's time we-"

'Flash'

In all this chaos, I forgot about the power I have now, and I let them die. At the very least, I won't let them go unavenged. In an instant, Subaru placed two lanterns on the ground behind him. He got up, trembling a little bit, but determined nonetheless. For in that moment when Felt died, he remembered what he was here to do.

"Elsa Granhiert, I, Subaru Natsuki, the judge of this world, hereby sentence you to DEATH!" Subaru started getting angry looking at the murders Elsa had committed in front of him-with many more kills most likely under her belt-and began to glow red.

"Oh? It seems there is more to you than meets the eye," Elsa said. "This ought to be exciting." She twirled her blade around before aiming it at Subaru, who noticed that she looked...pink. However, before she could strike, Subaru charged at her, aiming to kill. Unfortunately, Subaru didn't know anything about his power other than it being fueled by those seven emotions, and he couldn't muster an energy beam. Elsa moved out of the way before slicing his stomach

"Ghrk!" Subaru started coughing up blood.

"I must say, I'd hoped that you'd be more entertaining, but it looks like that light show earlier was all style, no substance," she taunted.

Yet again, Subaru felt his vision going red, and then he vomited.

"Agghuh!" Elsa screamed and moaned as her flesh started burning. A good hit, but Subaru has lost too much blood. With that, he fell back over, noticing that Elsa seemed just fine for someone who had acidic-looking blood spat on her.

"Hello? Is anyone here?" a bell-like voice chimed. Subaru and Elsa both looked at the door, and there walked Not-Satella, who quickly noticed the carnage.

"Aghk-! What happened here?" she questioned, noticing too late the knife-wielding woman leaping at her. Quickly, she tried to raise her hand to cast magic, but before she cut, she was struck in the stomach. She fell to the floor, blood leaking from her wound.

Dammit...I failed...again. Hoping that he would "loop" again, Subaru's rage towards Elsa was replaced by something else-a determination to save the silver-haired half elf who first helped him out. Barely remaining conscious, Subaru noticed the cup used to kill Rom right beside him. Barely processing his ill-made reflection in the moonlight, Subaru saw that his color was neither red nor yellow. No, instead…

Subaru Natsuki was green. And with that, his third life ended.

A.N.

Good day everyone. I'm Crossoverist! Hope you enjoyed chapter 2 of Re: Starting Life in Another World as the Host of Life and Death. This was an idea I've had in my head for the longest time now, and I was a bit confused that no one thought up a story where Subaru was a whit/black lantern. There was that Red Lantern crossover and the Batman one, bu that's about it. So I decided to write it myself. Also, I feel I should explain how Subaru's powers work. It was glossed over in the story, but a) Subaru can summon and desummon the lanterns at will. He also cannot use any of the eight lights without them. What's that? Aren't there technically nine? Yes, but for the sake of the story, Subaru isn't a full-fledged black or white lantern. Rather, he can use the seven individual lights and some parts of the black light. I also realize that since I posted this under the DC subsection, and not the non-existent Green Lantern subsection, that some people many not be familiar with the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum. As such, I'll explain:

At the center of the spectrum, there is the green light of Will, which is the easiest to control. Going down, there are the opposing emotions of blue Hope and yellow Fear, which you need to inspire in others to wield. The most uncontrollable emotions are violet Love and red Rage, which take the user to the limits of sanity. Finally, there are the parasitic emotions of indigo Compassion and orange Avarice. Regardless of compatibility, these two will force you to feel their emotion, which is why the indigo tribe is made of murderers and criminals. Finally, there is the black lantern corps of Death and the white lantern corps of Life. These are the most powerful cores, but Subaru can only access some of their powers. For instance, both corps can revive the dead and regenerate the user, but Subaru cannot heal himself-at least, not in that way-and he cannot come back to life without resetting. All lantern corps can fly, and we'll see what powers Subaru gets later on. Also, Subaru needs to feel a strong connection to the emotion(s) he's using; otherwise, it won't work. There is also a limit on how far he can be from the lanterns while still using their powers, but again, this is variable. Anyhow, have a great day and thank you for reading!

P.S. This is my first fanfic, so constructive criticism is welcome. (Also, I know I probably should've added a not on the first chapter, but as I said, this is my first fanfic and I'm still learning how to use the site. BYE)!
