Sometimes there isn't a reason. It just happens. Bad things happen. It just exists. Some people experience it more. And that was the life of Meredith Grey.

"Hello?"

"Hello. May I speak to Miss Meredith Grey?"

"This is Meredith Grey. To whom am I speaking to?"

"Miss Grey, my name is Dr. Rosslyn at Boston Medical Center. Is this a convenient time for you to discuss serious matters?"

"Yes." Why the hell would she be busy? It's literally ten in the evening. "I'm free."

"Okay. I regret to inform you. Your mother, Ellis Grey, passed away at 6:48 pm. She was admitted three nights ago with difficulties breathing and we were able to stabilize her after closely monitoring her condition. She died in her sleep peacefully and did not endure any pain."

"Oh" was all that could come out of her mouth.

"You are the only name listed under her contacts that I could reach. We ask you to make arrangements as soon as possible as the Boston Medical Center's morgue only allows 30 days before the body is transferred to the city coroner's office. However, as the Chief of Surgery, we could make special arrangements for her before you arrive. But it would be best to take care of this as soon as possible. After the allocated time frame, the process to retrieve the body and make arrangements will be much more difficult. I'm sure you wouldn't want that during this difficult time for your family…"

That was the phone call that went so great. She had just climbed into her bed after 20 hours. She could barely feel her feet touch the ground without hurting and her eyes felt heavy.

.

The next morning, she woke up with the sun glaring painfully at her eyes. She turned her back at the window and was met with a hard object on her side. Her hand reached to remove the disturbing item only to realize it was her phone. Her brain made a few connections and she was reminded of the phone call from the previous night. She groaned.

Ugh.

Anyway, she had just hopped onto the Uber that was taking her to the airport.

Meredith sighs.

She has made a name for herself in Seattle, becoming one of the best general surgeons Seattle Grace could offer. People from across the nation came to her. Her professional life was a huge success. Screw what her mother said. Screw her mother's two Harper Avery awards. Her life was perfectly fine as she buried herself in work to make up for her shitty personal life. She was content. But was she happy? Far from it.

She refocuses her gaze out the window of the car. It had started raining. Perfect. She wasn't carrying a jacket and didn't have an umbrella with her. It was July. Why the hell would it rain in July? It's sunny for 205 days in Boston and she happens to witness a rainy day during the hottest month of the year.

a/n: Thank you for the reviews! Derek will appear in the next chapter. Fun fact but not really: she will get a jacket soon.
