"Pst!" Marlene openly whispered to her work-obsessed neighbour. "Lils, this is so boring!"
"Shut up, Marls, it's a lesson. AKA not boring."
"Seriously?" this comment earned her a swift kick and a sly smile. "Ouch! You're always so mean and grouchy."
"I stand by my statement: shut up."
Marlene giggled, changing the subject, "Look at Potter, he's staring at you, tee hee!"
"Did you just say 'tee hee'?"
"Maybe," Marlene rushed into the rest of her thoughts, "anyways I, like, so can't believe James. He totes lurves you."
"Enough with the," she waved her hand vaguely in Marlene's direction, "un-you thing." Growling like a dog, the black-haired girl punched Lily's arm 'playfully'.
"OWWWWWW! MARLS I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! WHY'D YA PUNCH ME?"
"Miss McKinnon, I am appalled by your behaviour. 10 points from Gryffindor," the Professor went on with his long, tiring speech. "Now, I was saying that as a class project, everyone shall have another pen-pal! What great news, isn't it children," the class groaned. "Pick a slip of parchment if your surname starts from, hmm, let's see, maybe we'll change it this year, M to Z! Come on, don't be shy."
Lily was shocked when she realised a total stranger could be writing to her. Evans began with E, the fifth letter in the alphabet, which meant she wouldn't be picking a name. Last year, she had always done this (and ended up with Marlene who always thought it was Sirius, so she blushed profusely near him) but Lily didn't like change, especially if it meant anyone could be talking to her through letters. Worst of all, it was anonymous, meaning she had to reply as she had no idea who was using the quill and ink.
After everyone had picked a name, Professor Binns told everyone to open the parchment fold ("In the 16th century, many witches found letters from Muggles, and that is why today we shall have the pleasure of this task. Yak yak yak.").
James Potter wasn't sure what to think as he pulled open the parchment envelope. Shaking his head in disbelief, he looked up at the familiar face, then down at the slip. There has to be a mistake! he pondered in his head as Sirius Black snatched the rectangular note with spidery writing out his thin fingers. "Prongsie! You lucky duck! She's the hottest girl. I'd kill to be with her!"
"I'm not interested. Things like this always happens to me, Siri. What do I do?"
"Give it to me because," mrow "I wanna be her's."
"OK, take it. It's only Vance. Besides, your person would be easier to talk to."
"Only Vance? That girl is my sunshine to my, erm, sea to my ... something to my something, yeah let's go with that."
He sighed, Sirius would never understand. Vance was not for him, she was too mainstream, and although James knew that was the definition of him, he wanted someone because they liked him, not because he was hot. But that would be alright as one reason.
Clearing her throat, Lily pushed passed James on the way out, "Class's over, 'Prongs'."
"Thanks, Pads, how's it with Vance?"
"Potter! I'm not a mean bully like you, or Sirius, in that matter," she paused, finding herself, unwillingly, talking to her enemy.
"W- Wait, you heard?" he giggled. "Sirius fancies Vance!"
"So? In fact, I don't find that funny at all; Vance clearly loathes the poor guy."
"Sounds like someone I know," he joked, nudging her.
Trying not to snort, Lily replied, "Yes, yes, very funny. Sirius will be broken! We have to stop him ASAP!"
"Oh Godric, you're right," Lily rolled her eyes playfully. "Evans? Will y- Never mind," he added just in time, for once again he was left alone with the love of his life. And once again he had pushed her away.
