Meeting Dami For the First Time
It was night in the dark city of Gotham. Thunder boomed loudly though the darkness, lighting cracked illuminating that same darkness with blinding light. As well as it was also raining cats and dogs outside, making it very hard to see anything, if at all you could.
It was just one of those nights were it seemed as if the sky itself was angry with the gloomy city.
No one in their right mind would be out right now in this weather. So the streets of Gotham remained unoccupied and will probably stay that way till next morning.
Back at Wayne Manor Dick, Damian and Alfred were all currently finishing up dinner.
It had been a long day of Dick following Damian everywhere around the house, making sure she didn't run way or get hurt. Because Damian didn't make that an easy task.
It had all started when she woke up that morning. Damian began the day training for an insane amount of time. It went on for hours till Dick finally stopped the girl from over exerting herself saying she need to eat something and rest, and was literally dragging the girl kicking and screaming to the kitchen.
After lunch Damian still wanted to train more but Dick forbid her from it for the rest of the day, thanks to the incident earlier.
Dick had called it a temper tantrum but in the explicit words of Damian Grayson it was "not" a temper tantrum because those are for children.
The day dragged on and Damian stayed in her room the rest of the day drawing for hours till it was dinner time. She had said that if she was not allowed to train she was going to be in her room for the next couple of hours.
Dick had said she was pouting because she didn't get what she wanted, but again Damian just denied the childish act saying she was "not" pouting.
"I'm going to my room." Damian stated getting up from her dinning room chair.
Dick looked to his right at the girl and said, "are you sure you don't want to watch a movie?"
She finished pushing in her chair and looked at the man.
"No." She replied.
Dick just sighed in disappointment.
"Alright fine then," he said in a sad tone.
But then changed into a happier one in an instant, "but that just means I'm going to hangout in your room instead."
Damian just crossed her arms and began walking down the dark hall.
"Tt."
Damian slowly walked down the dark hallway of the Manor. Slightly startled at the sound of thunder and strikes of lighting through the window. Damian stopped and watched outside just in time to see a huge bright light flash across the sky followed by a big boom of thunder.
The toddler looked down at her hands and saw she was shaking slightly. Damian gulped and felt a chill go down her spine. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath trying to calm herself down.
She wasn't afraid of some big old thunder storm, she was an Al Ghoul and they aren't afraid of thunder or lighting. Al Ghouls weren't afraid of anything, at least that's what her mother had told her.
But right now she was very afraid, even though she didn't want to admit it.
Damian turned in the direction of her room and continue down the hall. She felt a few minutes go by and realized that she was lost.
I mean she had just been at the Manor for barely two days, she didn't complete know her way around yet. So it really wasn't a surprise she got lost.
Damian stopped walked and sighed loudly looking up at the ceiling agitated.
I hate this stupid house. She thought bluntly.
Damian took a deep breath and pressed on.
Another few minutes pass by and Damian rounds a corner only to be faced with a gun pointed straight at her face.
"How did you get in here brat?"
Damian slightly surprised didn't answer but instead did what she was trained to do, study her opponents.
Talia had taught her to first study the opponents before engaging. It gave her a feel of how they fought and had greatly helped when fighting one on one spars.
The man had a strong build with two gun holsters on his hips, a brown jacket on his shoulders and a red bat symbol on the front of his... uniform? The most noticeable thing Damian thought was his bright red helmet covering his entire face.
After not answering the question the first time the man asked again threatening to shoot if she didn't answer this time though.
Damian stood her ground not saying a word and looked him straight in the eyes. If he was going to kill her he would have to do it looking her straight in the eyes because she wasn't afraid of him or of dying.
Before things escalated any further all of a sudden another man came out of the shadows and stepped in front of the gun, blocking the shot on the little girl.
The man that had just appeared looked very agitated at the one with the red helmet and began hastily making him lower the gun that was aimed at her face. Though the one with the red helmet wouldn't do so.
"Red Hood what the he-," he started to yell but then his eyes glanced at the tiny toddler behind him, "heck!"
"What's the matter Red Robin? I'm just nicely interrogating our little intruder." He answered calmly.
That answer only seemed to make the other man angrier.
"The kid is a freaking toddler!" He ranted gesturing to the girl, "you don't point a gun at child! especially in their face, she's just a kid."
Red Hood sighed loudly and responded, "she is intruding on private property and I was only trying to get some answers out of the little pip squick."
"What part of don't point a gun at a child do you not understand!? The don't point a gun or the child part? Your traumatizing the poor thing and probably-"
Before the Robin could rant any further Red Hood abruptly cut him off.
"She's gone."
But Robin just ignored him and kept going.
"-Scaring her for life. I mean you-"
"Tim she's gone." He tried again.
"-Don't just go aiming guns at k-"
"Dammit Baby Bird look behind you!" He yelled frustrated.
Red Robin jumped, startled by the sudden outburst of emotion and use of his nickname turned around.
She was gone, the toddler that was right there, was gone. She had ran down the hall while he had been lecturing Jason.
"Nice going Replacement." Red Hood said, crossing his arms with a sigh, "you lost the kid."
Red Robin just looked away embarrassed he let this happen.
"Let's go find where the kid went." He mumbled and they began chasing after the small toddler.
As soon as they had began bickering Damian slipped away around the corner again and ran down the hall.
The girl ran because if she stayed and fought she would have been outnumbered and out gunned, literally. The man actually had guns. So instead she decided to run. She wasn't running away per say, she was just doing the opposite of fighting.
Intruders have breached the Manor. Damian thought as she speed to the living room.
A bunch of thoughts went though Damian's head while trying to remember the way back to the living room.
Most were of who were those men and why they called her the intruder. She lived at the Manor now, if anything they were the ones intruding.
Soon Damian reached a familiar staircase and jumped flipping onto the railing.
She started to quickly run down the banister with the greatest of ease, not losing her balance. She was a Grayson after all.
Finally making it to the end of the banister Damian jumped off and tucked her legs into her body curling up into a ball. She quickly rolled to the ground without making a sound just like she had been taught back in the league.
Back in the league silence was golden when sneaking undetected or when given an order. If you were given a order you simply replied with a nod or shake of the head nothing more, nothing less. Assassins were to remain silent at almost all times. If they weren't there were serious consequences.
Damian turned the last corner and arrived in the living room. She saw her father slowly walking back towards the dining room.
Dick felt a presence behind him and tensed for a second, the only person it could be was Damian. Because Alfred was in the kitchen and the rest of them weren't at home. So it had to be Little Dami.
He quickly turned to see just what he expected to see, his little baby running to him. But Dick noticed something was a little off about her, he just couldn't quite place it.
Because Damian usually didn't come running to him in a panic, she usually didn't run to him at all.
"Father!" She said as she stopped right in front of him.
He kneeled down to her level and asked what was bothering her.
"What's up Dami," he said calmly, "why are you in such a rush?"
"The Manor has been breached." She said trying to mask the slight panic rising in her voice.
Dick noticed the tone right away. He had been trained by the best in noticing nothing. The tone he recognized in her voice was a slight tremble of fear.
He knows that Damian was well trained as an assassin and is better then most 4 year old at just about anything. But even if she was raised by cold hearted assassins for the first few years of her life, in the end she was just a regular small 4 year old toddler. Afraid of normal 4 year old things. Like strangers.
Dick picked her up swiftly and held her close to his chest. The movement had taken the toddler by surprise and gave a small yelp.
Right when Damian was going to start demanding to be put down two other people burst into the room.
"You found the little brat!" Red Hood exclaimed, pointing at Dick dramatically.
Red Robin then gave a relieved sigh.
"Good, I didn't want to run any more."
They both ran up to the two of them.
Dick just smiled nervously.
"Great your all home now," he said happily, "now I don't have to explain it all separately to all of you."
Red Hood curious what he meant then asks, "who's the kid?"
"I'd like to know that as well." Said a new voice in the corner of the room.
Frightened by the intimidation of the voice Damian jumped, and buried her face into her father shoulder slightly shaking.
The presence of this man was frightening. He had simply said one sentence and Damian could already feel his terrifying gaze upon her. She was overwhelmed by the amount of fear he made her feel.
No matter how much Damian wanted to let go of her father and say that she wasn't scared her body just refused to let go. Because the fact of the matter remained, she was scared, just didn't want to admit it.
Dick felt Damian jump when she heard the voice and felt her tiny hands grab the back of his shirt and bury her face into his shoulder slightly shaking. After she did that Dick immediately went into protective dad mode and held her closely, stroking her hair trying to soothe the frightened girl.
I mean he couldn't blame her for jumping, he had jumped the first time he meet Batman. Being in the intimidating presence of such a man was overwhelming sometimes even now.
"Could you guys frighten my daughter more," Dick said sarcastically, gesturing to the alarmed 4 year old shaking in his arms, "I sure do appreciate it."
Red Robin and Red Hood just stared at him wide eyed in shock, Batman was still yet to make another sound from his spot in the shadows.
The room had gone completely silent till Dick finally broke it.
"We'll talk about this after I get her to calm down." He said slightly agitated at them for scaring his kid.
He also gave a look that said 'don't argue with me right now,' as he was talking so no one stopped him when he just walked away into a different room.
"Awww Dami, did that scare you?" Dick asked softly to the girl, rubbing circles on her back.
Damian wanted to give him an answer but she didn't trust her voice not to tremble if she did. So instead she shook her.
Dick felt a small shake on his shoulder.
Oh she's scared alright, Dami just doesn't want to admit it, Dick thought, why did they have to teach her that showing weakness was wrong.
Dick then began to stroke the toddler hair again while softly muttering, "It's okay," or "daddy's here," into her ear as he slowly walked around.
After a couple of minutes Dick felt Damian's body go limp and heard her breathing even out. The girl had finally fallen asleep.
Dick walked up the stairs to Damian's room and made his way to her bed. He carefully tucked her in and gently kissed her forehead.
"Night Dami." Dick said quietly as he left the room.
By the time Dick arrived down stairs in the living room everyone had changed back into their normal civilian clothes. He was then bombarded with questions left and right.
Mostly revolving around the reason he had a daughter they never told them about.
"Why didn't you tell us you had a secret daughter!?" Tim yelled angrily.
"I'm agreeing with the Replacement for once, why didn't you?" Jason said more calmly then his younger brother.
Bruce just stood patiently knowing he would get answers if he just waited for the explanation, instead of just asking a bunch of questions like his sons.
Dick started to explain from the beginning when both his younger brothers kept interrupting him by asking more questions.
After about three time of being interrupted Dick yelled, "I didn't tell you I had a daughter because I didn't know myself!"
That shut both of them up, for a second.
Tim then asked, "how did you not know that you had a child?"
Dick sighed in defeat.
"Well Dami's mother is... umm... Talia Al Ghoul." With the last part ending in a whisper.
"Talia Al Ghoul!" Both his brothers exclaimed not believing that name had just come out of their brother's mouth.
Bruce was in shocked just standing there slowly processing everything.
A sudden realization hit him and Jason pointed at Dick in disbelief.
"Y-you actually had-" he started but was immediately cut off by Dick.
"Jason!"
"What? I just can't believe it." Jason said shrugging his shoulders.
"Well it is, and I have the DNA test to prove it."
"So how come Talia gave her to you," Tim asked curiosity, "She wouldn't just show up out of the blue and tell you."
Tim always was perceptive.Dick thought.
"That is actually almost what she did," Dick explained, "she just showed up Friday night and told me her father said she couldn't keep her any more and asked if I wanted her like she was some kind of tool."
Dick felt his anger welling up inside him. Talia had treated their daughter like a object and not a actually living human being. It made him so angry. How could Talia do that to his little Dami, she was only a child.
After explaining all the rest of the details and showing them the DNA results both Dick's brothers and Bruce finally believed him, not that they ever really doubted him anything.
Dick had also said that they could meet Damian tomorrow since she was already asleep now. He bet she couldn't wait to meet her Uncle Jason, Uncle Tim and Grandpa Bruce.
Soon after they all headed to bed with Jason, Tim and Bruce glancing at the door to Damian's room, curious about the new member of the family.
It was going to take some time getting use to having a small little toddler in the Manor but change was good, right?
Damian woke with a start hearing the thunder rumble outside. Cold sweat running down her forehead, eyes pricked with tears.
She had been having a nightmare about drowning in the middle of a sea storm out in the ocean, with no way to back to the surface.
She always did have trouble sleeping during stormy nights back at the league. She would usually just lay in bed till morning on a bad night and on a good night she would eventually fall asleep again, hours later that is.
Damian closed her eyes again and tried to go back to sleep but it was no use.
There was no way I'm going back to sleep tonight. Damian thought as she sighed.
The toddler got up and walked over to the window. Damian could hear the rain pouring down loudly outside. All of sudden a huge lighting bolt struck straight in front of the window with a blinding light, making Damian wince and cover her eyes. It illuminated Damian's room and everything in it.
Following right after it thunder boomed louder then Damian had ever heard before and she ran to the door.
Once she got out of the room she quietly closed the door. She then gave a small sigh in relief not being able to see anymore lighting or hear any thunder.
"Dami?" A voice asked behind her.
Damian turned around to see her father looking at her with concern. Dick walked over to her and looked to see what was wrong.
Dick could see the girl visibly shaking and wondered what was bothering her at this time of night.
"What's the-"
But before Dick could finish the sentence a loud rumble of thunder could be heard throughout the Manor.
Damian flinched at the sound and crossed her arms avoiding eye contact with Dick.
Ahhh so that was it, Dick thought, the storm.
"Hey Dames," Dick called, getting her attention, "want to come sleep in my bed with me?"
After awhile Damian had reclusively agreed having been coaxed into it.
Now they were both laying down in Dick's bed with Damian on one side and Dick in the other. Damian was facing the wall laying on the edge of the bed and Dick was laying on the other side facing Damian's back. One thing Dick noticed was that Damian was still shaking and he didn't like it so he decided to change that.
Dick also didn't like this little sleeping arrangement they had going and decided to change that as well. So he quietly crawled over to Damian and grabbed her from behind, flipping her around to face him in the process.
So now Damian was leaning into Dick's chest with his arms warped around her protectively.
"Hey," She protested, "unhand me."
But Dick just ignored her and began to hum softly.
Damian slowly began to calm down and relax at the soft melody of the song Dick was humming.
Damian then noticed that she wasn't shaking anymore.
When did that happen? She thought curiously.
Her eyes eventually closed and she fell into a peaceful sleep.
Works every time. Dick thought happily, snuggling closer to Damian.
The next morning everyone was sitting in the living room, per Dick's request. Though both Dick and Damian were still upstairs getting ready.
"Why are we here again?" Jason asked irritated.
"We are here to meet Damian." Tim answered.
"Why?"
"Maybe because she is your niece? Or to say sorry for pointing a gun at her face?" Tim stated crossing his arms disapprovingly.
"Okay I get it no pointing guns at kids, lesson learned." Jason said rolling his eyes.
Tim just sighed and whispered under his breath, "your such a piece of shit."
Jason just smiled and replied back, "takes one to know one."
Tim was not amused.
Bruce just sighed as he watched it all go down.
Why did I want kids again? He thought questioning his decisions.
"We're here!" Dick exclaimed happily.
Damian had on her usual glare and Dick had his usual smile. They both walked over and Dick started to introduced them all but was abruptly cut off.
"Damian this is-"
"Jason Todd, Timothy Drake and Bruce Wayne." She stated bluntly with no enthusiasm.
They all just stared at her in surprise.
"How do you know our names?" Tim asked, concerned that she knew there names before meeting them.
"Mother gave me a brief history of father's family to read and study on the plane." She stated plainly like it was a normal thing for a mother to do.
"Wow," Jason said surprised, "she was not what I expected."
Damian crossed her arms.
"Tt. Did you expected me to be more like my idiot father?"
Now she was the complete opposite of Dick and that's what was surprising. They had all expected her to be like Dick, playful and energetic. Not a non smiling, sassy glaring toddler.
But it wasn't a surprise given how she was previously raised.
"She must get it from her mother." Tim whispered, looking over at Dick sympathetic.
"Dami is actually very nice, she just has a hard time trusting people she doesn't know." Dick whispered back, loud enough for all of them to hear but Damian.
"So Dami, these are your Uncles Jason and Tim." Dick said putting his hand on both there shoulders.
Jason just glared at Dick with a ' I'll kill you later' look and Tim gave a small smile and a slight wave.
Dick then motioned to Bruce.
"And this is your Grandpa Bruce!"
Damian just narrowed her eyes at all of them.
"Todd, Drake and Grandfather." She said, pointing at each of them as she called their names.
They all questioned why she called them by those names and so Dick asked.
"Why are you calling them by their last names?"
"Mother taught me it was easier to address people by their last or formal names, so I don't get too attached."
Damian didn't look up at their reactions and continued, "one time I got too attached to someone and mother found out. He was gone the next day."
She frowned thinking of the memories of her friend, "l never did see him again after that though."
At that sad declaration Dick brought Damian in for hug.
"I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you back then Little D," Dick said with tears pricking his eyes, "I'm going to be there from now on okay."
Damian was confused by the statement but answered anyway.
"Okay father." She answered cluelessly.
When Jason, Tim and Bruce heard what she said they all had murderous looks in their eyes. Who would say that to a child? Don't get attached or they die the next day. That crazy father daughter duo and their morals.
"Damian you can call them by their first names if you want okay," Dick said as he put the girl down, "right guys?"
They all looked at Dick he gave them a look that said 'say yes or you die tonight.' So they all agreed and smiled down at the little girl.
"Were you guys the people in the house last night?" She asked out of the blue.
They all looked at Dick behind the girl for the right answer to the question. None of them wanted to tell her the wrong one that Dick didn't want and have Dick get mad.
When Dick got mad it was terrifying, he rarely got mad but if you manage to do it you were in it for one hell of a night. But ever since he became a dad they noticed it was now worse if you made him mad.
Damian realized she wasn't getting anything out of them and turned to her father.
"Are they?" She asked looking his straight into his eyes.
Dick sighed and began to explain, "let me start from the beginning when it was just Bruce and I..."
