Chapter 2

Aaron, walking towards his locker, he keeps to himself, blending in with the other students. Not paying too much attention, he bumps into another student. "Oh, sorry. I wasn't paying attention."

"No worries. I wasn't looking where I was going. Names Derek Morgan, yours?" Derek asks.

"Aaron Hotchner, nice to meet you. Look, I'm sorry for running into you." Aaron apologizes.

Derek shakes his head no, "Nah, it was my fault. Anyways, it's nice to meet you too. I'm actually new here, first day. I'm on my way to Social Studies, can you tell me where it's at?"

"Of course, I'm actually headed there now. If you'd like, you can follow me." Aaron tells him.

Both boys walk towards their social studies class, Aaron showing the way. Derek tells him where he's from, which would be Chicago. Aaron goes on to tell him that he's lived in Quantico pretty much his whole life, and that he's got two younger sisters. "I got younger siblings myself, a sister and a brother. How old are your sisters' if you don't mind me asking."

"I don't mind," Aaron tells him, as they reach their destination, and they both walk in, "my sisters are ten and eight."

"Okay, so they're close to my siblings' age, my sister, she's eleven, and my brother, he's only six." Derek says, as he picks a seat next to Aaron.

Aaron gives a nod of his head, "That's cool. Maybe sometime we can meet up after school, and you can meet them and vice versa."

"That would be great, I'm sure they would like that." Derek agrees.

Before either could respond, the second bell goes off indicating the start of class. The teacher goes around and collects homework from the students. He then goes on about the latest topic, and then explains that there will be a test in the coming week. The rest of the day goes by in a blur, Aaron ended up having lunch with the new kid he had bumped into, Derek. They were slowly becoming friends. Before Aaron realizes, it's the end of the school day, and goes to his locker to grab his things and his homework to take home. Just as he shuts his locker, he turns around and sees Derek walking towards his way.

"Hey Aaron, wait up!" Derek calls out to Aaron as he tries to run up to him.

Aaron stops and waits for Derek to catch up. "What's up?"

"I just figured I'd walk out with you," Derek answers, once he got closer to Aaron.

"That's fine, I'm actually going to the Elementary building. I have to pick my sister's up." Aaron tells him as they walk towards the main doors by the front office.

"Okay, I have a ride picking me up anyways." Derek tells him.

The young boys talk about miscellaneous things as they reach the main doors. Derek spots his ride, and tells Aaron bye as he takes off towards the vehicle. Aaron waves bye in Derek's direction and proceeds to walk over to the Elementary building. Reaching the building, the thirteen-year-old sits down in the spot he had told his sisters he would meet them at, and gets out his homework while he waits for them to get out of school.

Finishing up his Math homework, Aaron looks up just in time to see Emily and JJ walking his way. He packs up his things and waits for his sisters to get closer before they start their trek home. Once the girls got closer, Aaron noticed that his youngest sister didn't look too happy, she had looked like she'd been crying. "Hey squirt, what's wrong? Everything okay?"

JJ nodded her head, indicating she was fine. "My back just hurts, where daddy hit me. I don't want to go home yet, can we go to the park instead?"

"I don't think so, squirt." Aaron answers her, then he looks up towards the sky, "besides, I think it's about to rain anyways."

"Okay. Tomorrow?" JJ asks hopefully.

"We'll see," Aaron tells her. "Come on, let's get home."

Emily grabs a hold of her sister's hand and all three kids start walking home in silence. Each kid lost in thought, dreading when they finally got home. Breaking the silence between them after ten minutes, Aaron looks at his sisters and asks, "Do any of you have homework?"

"I do, just math, science and history," Emily answers, not looking at her brother.

"JJ what about you squirt?" Aaron asks his youngest sister.

The little blonde girl, just nods her head yes, indicating that she does have homework. "I just have spelling words to write."

"As soon as we get home, we're all going to the kitchen table to do our homework." Aaron tells them, leaving no room for argument.

"What if dad's home?" Emily asks worried.

"Then we'll deal with it then. For now, let's not think about that." Aaron answers. "As soon as we get home I'll get dinner started for us three. That way we can head to our rooms right after dinner."

"Sounds good. Hopefully he'll be at work, and we won't have to worry about him," Emily tells him.

"Hopefully," Aaron agrees.

For the next fifteen minutes the kids continue walking home quietly. When they finally reached their house, Emily had pointed out that their father's car wasn't in the driveway. Aaron told his sisters to hurry up inside and to get started on their homework. As the kids walked in, each one took their shoes off and went into the kitchen. The girls took out their homework while Aaron got started on their dinner. In the middle of making dinner, Emily looks over at her brother, who was by the stove stirring up the macaroni and cheese, and she asks,

"Aaron, can you help me with my math please?"

"Give me just a minute, I need to drain this, and add the sauce to it," Aaron tells her as he's about to pour the noodles and water into a colander over the sink.

"Okay," Emily replies, as she turns to face her brother.

Aaron goes back to finishing up dinner for the three of them. Once he finishes, he walks over to Emily, and helps her with her math homework. Emily shows him the problems she is working on, which is fractions. "I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do, these are harder problems." Emily tells him while pointing to one of the problems on her math worksheet.

"Let me see here," Aaron says, mostly to himself, as he takes a look at her math worksheet. "It shows that for each problem you have to write the sum into the simplest form. Looks like you're getting it, which problem do you need help with?"

Emily looks at her worksheet, and points to one of the problems, "This one, nine tenths plus seven tenths."

"Okay, well let's do the top row first, what's nine plus seven?" Aaron asks, pointing to the nine and seven.

Thinking, Emily questions, "uhm, sixteen?"

"That's correct." Aaron praises, then continues with the problem, "Now the bottom number, which is the denominator, it carries over, so that would be sixteen over ten. Now you have to reduce it. So what goes into sixteen, and ten?"

"Uh...two?" Emily answers, unsure.

"Yes. Two goes into sixteen and ten. So, what's sixteen divided by two?" Aaron asks.

Emily gives it some thought, tapping her pencil on the table. "That would be eight!"

"Correct. Now, what is ten divided by two?"

"That's easy, it's five," Emily tells him more confidently.

"That's right. So what does sixteen over ten equal to?" Aaron asks her.

"It would be eight fifths," Emily tells him, writing the answer down.

Aaron nods his head, indicating that his sister was correct. "Now, you still have to simplify it. So what do you have to do in order to get the smallest number?"

Emily looks up at her brother, shrugs her shoulders, "I don't know. I forget how."

The thirteen-year-old takes his sister's pencil and marks on her extra sheet of paper, "you have to divide, Emily. So, what is eight divided by five?"

"Oh, yeah," Emily answers. "Five goes into eight once, so eight minus five would be three. Is it one and three fifths?"

"Yes it is," Aaron tells her. "See, you could do it. You just needed to think it through. Now let's put away the homework and eat our dinner, so I can get the dishes all washed and put away before dad gets home.

"Okay," Emily tells him. She then packs up her math homework and packs it away into her school bag. She turns and faces her sister and helps her get her things packed away.

"Emily, go ahead and take yours and JJ's bags up to your rooms, and after dinner we'll finish up any homework you may have." Aaron sternly tells her, leaving no room for argument.

Emily nods, grabs both her and her little sister's bag and goes to take them up the stairs. Aaron grabs plates, and starts putting food on each of their plates. He makes sure the stove is turned off and places the plates down on the table, and goes and grabs some cups out of the cabinet, he turns to JJ, "hey squirt, what would you like to drink?"

"Is there any milk?" JJ asks, thinking.

"There is, would you like some?" Aaron tells her.

"Please," JJ answers as she digs into her food.

Aaron grabs the milk out of the fridge and pours his baby sister a cup of milk. He goes and gets some juice out for him and Emily, then pours the drink into each of their cups. Placing the drink back into the fridge, Aaron places the juice filled cups on the table, one in Emily's spot and the other in his. Emily comes back into the kitchen, just as Aaron sat down, she looks at the choice for dinner and asks, "Mac n cheese and hotdogs again for dinner?"

"Sorry 'Em, it's all we got, and besides its quick and easy." Aaron apologizes.

Emily shrugs, "it would be nice to have something else for dinner. I'm almost sick and tired of eating this."

"I know. Next time we go to the store, you can help plan a meal. But it does have to be budget friendly, not sure when we'll be going to the store next." Aaron promises.

JJ speaks up after taking a bite of her mac n cheese, "I want to help too!"

Aaron sighs, looks towards his youngest sister, "Okay squirt, you can help next time too. It might have to wait to help plan on the next grocery run."

"Okay!" JJ responds as she digs into her dinner again, taking a big bite of her hot dog.

The kids go back to eating their dinner, trying to finish up as quickly as possible. Just as the kids were placing their plates in the sink, five minutes after eating their dinner, their dad came pulling into the driveway. Aaron looks out the kitchen window, then turns to face his sisters, "Okay you two, hurry up and get upstairs please. Dad just got home."

"I don't want to," JJ tells her brother, crossing her small arms across her chest.

Aaron gives a look to JJ, "I don't care what you want to do or not, you're going upstairs now."

Emily grabs a hold of her sisters' arm, and she leads her towards the stairs. Aaron, making sure the girls were out of the room, and heard the bedroom door shut, he proceeded to finish cleaning up their dinner. The thirteen-year-old was in the middle of washing the dishes, when he heard his father come walking into the kitchen.

"What're you doing boy?" The older man, Mark, asks.

Aaron looks over at his father, who was leaning against the entryway, "I'm finishing up these dishes, now if you'll excuse me, I need to finish this."

"Where are your no good for nothing sister's at?" Mark asks the young boy, walking closer to him.

Aaron turns around, faces his father, who is now standing just inches from him, "None of your business. You're going to leave them alone tonight."

"Don't you tell me what to do, young man. I am your father, and you'll answer my question. Now! Where are your sister's?" Mark sternly tells him.

Aaron, who's having enough of his father, turns back towards the sink, to finish washing the dishes. Mark, unhappy about his son not answering, forces him to turn around, and he grabs him by the collar of his shirt. "Tell me dammit!"

"Why? So you can beat them?" Aaron spat, trying to escape his father's hold on him.

Mark takes his free hand and slaps his son across his face, pushes his son back, who falls into a chair behind him. Mark then turns and leaves the kitchen and goes on up the stairs. Aaron, gets back up off the floor, and straightens his shirt out. He scrambles out of the kitchen, and tries to catch up to his dad before he could go into his sister's room. Just as Aaron reached the top of the stairs, he saw his dad walk into Emily's room. He runs over and tries to try and get his dad to leave his sister's alone.

"What in the world, do you two think you're doing?" Mark bellows. "Get your asses downstairs right now! You two have cleaning to do."

Both girls look up at their dad, startled. Before they could say anything, their dad walks into the room and grabs the youngest by the arm forcibly, and looks at Emily, then at JJ, who has tears flowing down her face, "are you two deaf? I said to get your asses downstairs right now!"

"Leave them alone!" Aaron calls out, stepping into the room. "They haven't done anything."

Mark turns towards his oldest, "This is none of your business boy!" he then turns his attention to both girls, "Now, don't make me tell you again, get your asses downstairs, or the little one gets a beating." Mark harshly tells them, then tosses JJ down, and Emily walks over, and helps a crying JJ off the ground and both girls walk out of the room to go clean up the downstairs.

Aaron watches his dad walk towards him, "Stay out of my way, or you'll be the one that I give the beating too." Mark tells him, giving him a punch to the gut as he walks out.

Downstairs in the living room, Emily and JJ both are cleaning, picking up the trash their father had lying around. Not wanting to upset their dad, they quietly finish cleaning up. Aaron, after catching his breath from the punch, helps his sisters pick up the living room, and finishes up in the kitchen. Once the downstairs was cleaned up, and free of any trash lying around, the kids all went back up the stairs, their dad passed out in the recliner.

Once in Aaron's room, Aaron turned to his sisters and told them to go get ready for bed, and they would all just camp out together in his room. He made sure they grabbed their bags, so they could finish any homework they needed to finish. A half hour goes by, when all the kids finish up any homework that needs to be finished, and they all climb into Aaron's bed, JJ in between both of her siblings.

"Goodnight you two, sleep well," Aaron tells them, shutting the light off on his nightstand.

"Night Aaron," both girls replied, as they too got comfortable.

Not a minute later, all three kids had fallen to sleep, escaping their world for even just a little while. Each kid hoped that someone would come and save them.

A/N: Thanks for reading everyone! Those poor kids! Wonder if someone will come and save them? Hopefully soon! Let me know what you think in a review. I'll give cyber cookies to those that do, or cyber brownies if that's what you prefer! (All credit goes to KynleeM.)
