I do not own the rights to the movie Gettysburg. It's is property of New Line Cinemas
NARRATOR: In June 1863, after more than two years of bloody conflict the Confederate army of Northern Virginia, Robert E. Lee commanding slips across the Potomac to begin the invasion of the North. It is an army of 70,000 men.
"Whoa." Ruby whispered.
"That's absurd!" Weiss exclaimed. "Why would an army like this need 70,000 men?"
"Beats me, Ice Queen." Yang shrugged. "All I care about is how good can they fight!"
Blake rolled her eyes and returned to the film. However, even the ninja couldn't help but feel as if the number was too small for this kind of warfare.
They move slowly behind the Blue Ridge using the mountains to screen their movements. Their objective is to draw the Union army out into the open where it can be destroyed. Late in June, the Union army of the Potomac, 80,000 men turns north from Virginia to begin the great pursuit up the narrow roads across Maryland and into Pennsylvania.
"80,000?" Weiss raised an eyebrow. "I am clearly not seeing how the Confederate Army could beat the Union Army if their numbers are fewer than their opponents."
"That's the thing, Weiss." Ruby piped up. "It's not about the size, it's how you use it."
Immediately, all eyes are on the reaper who now suddenly wanted the ground to swallow her whole.
"Where did you hear that, Ruby?" Yang asked a little too sweetly.
Ruby gulped. "I overheard Cardin and his team discussing something in class the other day. I thought they were speaking about tactics or something."
The girls nodded and returned to the film but the three began to mentally plan out what they will do to CRDL for corrupting their leader.
General Lee knows that a letter has been prepared by the Southern government. A letter which offers peace. It is to be placed on the desk of Abraham Lincoln, President of the U.S the day after Lee has destroyed the Army of the Potomac somewhere north of Washington.
The map disappears and then after a view of trees and the land, letters are seen:
THIRD SUMMER OF THE WAR.
A man is seen watching the sunrise before the scene changes to show him riding a horse in the forest. He stops and pulls out a scope. Peering through it, he sees men in blue uniforms riding horses with one of the flags; the one with red and white stripes and a blue box that had stars in it. The man lowered his scope and patted his horse.
"Federal cavalry. Two brigades."
Weiss smiled. She loved horses, riding them, feeding them, grooming them. She even had her own, Elsa, who she loved with her heart. Had she had the chance to not be a Schnee, she would have chosen to be a horse breeder instead. It was a shame her mother and even her sister did not have a similar love of the creature.
The man rode off, until later, he stopped once again and pulled out his scope. This time, it was men walking on foot. They were all armed with rifles and dressed in the same blue uniforms as the men on horses. The differences were the hats. The horseman had Stetson while the footsoldiers had a small patrol cap on.
"Ugh, so much walking." Yang grumbled. "I could never be a person on foot."
The other girls agreed with her.
Later, the man was riding through a thick pack of woods, as if to look for something. Then out of nowhere, men in grey uniforms appeared in front of him. Their uniforms however looked more militia than a regular soldier. One of them approached the man.
Sergeant: "Howdy, friend. Where you headed?"
Man: "General Longstreet. I must see him."
Sergeant: "Is that a fact?"
Man: "I know General Lee's headquarters are up here a little ways. Wherever he is, Longstreet is nearby."
A hung silence overcame the two, before the man looked around the group.
Man: "You fellas take me that way. It's urgent."
Sergeant: "Let me put it to you like this, stranger. You're not in a uniform and you're coming through my picket line. I'll take you up there, but if nobody there knows you, I guess, unfortunately, you'll have to be hanged."
"Well he's a ray of Sunshine." Yang commented.
The sound of chatter and a guitar playing is heard as the Sergeant brings the man to a tent that had two other men standing near it. One of them, an officer, talks to the man before he turns and pokes his head into the tent.
Officer: "Sir. General, sir."
The man inside the tent looks up from his desk and at the officer.
Officer: "I'm sorry, excuse me, sir, but Harrison is back."
"That's his name?" Blake asked out loud. "No rank, just his name? Probably explain the attitude of the picket line."
The General stares at the officer, Major Sorrel as he ponders the message.
General: "Harrison?"
Sorrel: "Yes, sir. The scout, Harrison, sir. I knew you'd want to know that as soon as possible. He's right outside here, sir."
General Longstreet nods and exits the tent where Harrison smiles at him.
Harrison: "Your servant, general. Didn't expect to see me, did you?"
Longstreet: "I paid you in gold three weeks ago. What do you got?"
Harrison sniffs the air inhaling the smell of the cigar General Longstreet smoked.
Harrison: "I don't suppose you got another one of those. That good southern tobacco."
"And just like that, he dodged the question." Weiss commented.
"What's so great about smoking?" Blake said disgusted. "All it does is mean up your lungs."
General Longstreet was not fazed.
Longstreet: "What do you got?"
Harrison: "I got the position of the Yankee army. They're only a few miles down the road. The whole Yankee army coming this way. 7th Corps."
Longstreet: "A few miles?"
Harrison: "Yes. Two brigades of Yankee cavalry down that road about...two, four hours away. Behind that there's 7th Corps. I put it all on a map, if you'd like to see it. About 80,000 men."
"Say what you want about this guy, but he's good at his job." Ruby pointed out.
Weiss nodded. "To have that much intelligence and just by line of sight. That's very impressive."
Longstreet: "All 7th Corps."
Harrison: "You didn't know any of that, General You didn't know they were on the move. You wouldn't be spread so think if you'd known
Longstreet: "How do you know we're spread out?"
Harrison: "Listen, General. I'm good at this business."
Sorrel: "Sir, I beg your pardon, but if this man's story is true...why haven't we heard about it? General Stuart's cavalry is out there. He would have reported."
"Monty Oum, how many Generals are there?" Yang complained. "General Longstreet, General Lee, General Stuart."
"I agree." Blake nodded. "Too many generals for one area."
"Maybe they are combining their tactics to better assist one another." Ruby suggested
"Generally Speaking." Yang said. There was silence before the girls groaned.
That was a very bad pun, Yang." Blake said.
Yang playfully crossed her arms. "You guys just don't understand humor."
Longstreet: "What do you know about Jeb Stuart?"
Harrison: "He's out there all right. He's riding up north somewhere getting his name in the papers. He hasn't caused anything but a little fuss."
Sorrel: "If the federal army was moving that fast, as close as you say...I have to believe General Stuart-"
Harrison: "Now, look here. I came within an angry mule's kick of the whole Yankee cavalry. And all the way through a picket line. Hazardous, too. I don't know what Jeb Stuart's doing. I don't care. I do my job. Now there's Yankee cavalry's down the road, thick as fleas not two hours hard ride from this now spot. And that, by God, is the Lord's truth!"
The two stare at one another before General Longstreet spoke:
Longstreet: "Major Sorrel."
Sorrel: "Yes, sir."
Longstreet: "Will you go to General Lee's headquarters and notify him about this?"
Sorrel: "Yes, sir."
As Major Sorrel left, General Longstreet turned to the other man nearby.
Longstreet: "Captain Goree."
Goree: "Yes, sir."
Longstreet: "Get this man a tent. And a cigar."
Goree: "Sir."
Harrison smiled, his work done.
The girls could help but snicker at the smug look Harrison had.
Later General Longstreet was standing at a table overlooking a map with another man, this one had a white beard and hair, not to mention held an air of supreme authority over General Longstreet. This was General Lee, Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.
Longstreet: "He says the lead element is here with the 3rd Corps...the 6th right behind...supported by a column of federal cavalry. 7th Corps all together. The 1st and 11th are above Taneytown. And there's more cavalry two hours east. There may be as many as 100,000 altogether."
The girls were gobsmacked.
"100,000?" Blake repeated. "Against 70,000? Talk about a 30,000 difference in man power."
Ruby shook her head. "General Lee is very bold to fight with a lower number."
Lee: "Do you believe the man, this Mr. Harrison?"
Longstreet: "No choice. You remember him, sir, the actor from Mississippi?"
"AN ACTOR!" RWBY shrieked.
Lee: "An actor? We move on the word of an actor?"
Longstreet: "Can't afford not to."
Lee moved away from the map and stopped.
Lee: "There would be some word from General Stuart. General Stuart would not leave us blind."
Longstreet: "One other thing. Hooker's been replaced. George Meade's the new commander. Harrison read it in the Yankee papers."
Lee: "George Meade, Pennsylvania man. Meade would be cautious, I think. Take him some time to get organized. Perhaps we should move more swiftly. There may be an opportunity here."
Weiss was surprised. "General Lee must have some serious experience if he knows who his opponent is."
"Right?" Ruby exclaimed. "That's like me going up against Jaune."
"Of which case we'd lose." Blake pointed out.
"Hey." Ruby pouted in which the girls giggled.
Longstreet: "Yes, sir."
Lee moved back to the map and began issuing orders.
Lee: "No reason to delay. I think we should concentrate here. All the roads converge just east of this gap. This junction will be very necessary."
"Smart move." Blake said.
Longstreet: "Yes, sir."
Lee: "I left my spectacles over there. What is the name of this town?"
Longstreet looked at the map and spoke. "Gettysburg."
"So it is a town." Ruby exclaimed. The girls looked at her with deadpanned looks.
"We kinda got that before we started the movie, Rubes." Yang said.
"Oh." Came Ruby's only reply.
Lee: "Very well."
The girls stopped the movie to ponder what was going on. Ruby fished out the cover and within one minute gave out a gasp. WBY looked at her as she pointed to the screen time. "It's gonna be 4 hours long!"
They all stood shocked before Yang snapped out of it and sped to the door. "I'll get the snacks!"
"I'll get the drinks!" Weiss ran after her. Blake shook her head in amusement before she noticed a book at the bottom of the box. Picking it up, she read the cover.
American Civil War: The complete history.
Ruby and Blake looked at each other before sitting down and opening it up.
I hope you enjoy the first Chapter. I love Gettysburg because it's one of the only movies that seems realistic.
I placed Jaune as a more superior tactician than Ruby because of their portrayal. Ruby can think on the fly which is handy in difficult scenarios but Jaune has been shown to have a huge knack for strategies and tactics. If put head to head, I have no doubt that the odds will go to Arc due to his ability to utilize his teams strengths against his enemies weakness. However I will put barely in as well because Ruby is very unconventional in her way of leadership.
If any one wishes to do the reactions to RWBY, I welcome the assistance. I use Google Docs so let me know via PM.
I am up in the air if I will add anyone else. Maybe Ren and Nora. I don't know. Voice your opinions in the reviews.
I will pump out another chapter hopefully tonight. After that I will do one/two every week.
