Chapter 2: The glowy light
As Coraline finds the new family unpacking their boxes and furniture, she sees a girl around her age looking at the view of Mrs. Lovate's garden. She has long black straight hair and seems to be paler than usual. She holds a notebook that she seems to carry around that could be a drawing book. She doesn't come off as overpowering or bold, but she gives off a vibe of a mellow and reserved person. Coraline hesitates a little to go up to her as she is a bit nervous, but she ends up getting some momentum to at least try to introduce herself. Just as she begins to walk towards her, something startles her.
"Hey! Guess what I just made!", says Wybie.
Coraline yells as she becomes frightened by Wybie's unexpected appearance. The new girl becomes startled and runs back to her new apartment where her furniture is unpacking. With Coraline's plan ruined, she gives Wybie a stern look as he causes another disturbance.
"I just missed my opportunity to get to know the new neighbors because of you!", Coraline says frustratedly. "Ughh!"
Coraline tries to keep her cool towards Wybie as he has become a true friend to her. Still, he causes some annoyance to her life that she has to tolerate.
"I'm sorry", Wybie says calmly. "I know I can be a little hectic sometimes, but I really wanted to show you this incredible thing I made!"
"What is it…", Coraline says while looking uninterested. She begins to walk to Mrs. Lovate's garden to the same spot the girl was standing on.
"Drum roll please", Says Wybie. "Da-Dum-Da-Dum-Da!" he shouts while shrugging Coraline's shoulder.
Coraline smirks and lets out a little laugh as Wybie acts like a goofball.
"Okay! What is it already?", Coraline comments.
Wybie takes his dusty bag off his back and pulls an electronic bat.
"It's a drone disguised as a bat!", he says excitingly.
There is a quick pause as Wybie stands there with his smile on his face and Coraline looks at his creation struggling to hide her disinterest.
"Cool…", Coraline says forcing herself to sound enthusiastic about it.
Wybie ends up reading Coraline's mood and seems to not understand why she doesn't care.
"Seriously!?", Wybie says confused. "Do you know how awesome this is? We can literally be scouts of the world and see what's deep in the forest."
"mhmm… very interesting", Coraline says not fazed by Wybie's ideas.
"Ya know. I have a conspiracy. The woods of this place seems very old, even the well up that hill for sure", Wybie says.
"What are you inferring?", said Coraline.
"Well… What I'm trying to say is that we can get to know more about our environment. And I also want to see where Charlie goes here and there; he hasn't been around lately as he used to be", Wybie explains.
Coraline seems intrigued by this idea and actually takes it into consideration.
"Nah!", Coraline says shrugging off the idea. "Don't you just want to have a normal life? We have a new neighbor and there is so much to look forward to now. I'm sorry Wybie… but I can't."
Coraline walks away and heads towards her home to get ready for supper and bedtime.
Coraline has dinner with her mother and father harmoniously. The house is brighter and warmer than it has ever been before. A conversation takes place with Coraline and her mother.
Mrs. Jones says, "So… Have you ever got a chance to speak to the new neighbors?"
"No, not yet.", Coraline answers. "I saw a girl around my age, but she seems like she doesn't speak that much."
"Hmm… Well, I got an idea.", said Mrs. Jones.
She pulls out a fancy box pink box that contains snickerdoodle cookies in them.
"how about you give this to their family as a welcome gift?", said Mrs. Jones.
"Whoa!... really?", Said Coraline.
"I'm sure they would like to feel comfortable in a new town", said Mrs. Jones.
Coraline is surprised by her mom's plan as she saw her mom do such a thing. She is also excited to actually speak to the new neighbors and possibly become friends with the new girl.
Coraline heads out after supper to give the gift to the new family that is located posterior to the apartment building. When Coraline finally arrives, she sees a lamp light shining out the windows indicating that they are still awake. Some boxes are not unpacked as she can see through the window. Coraline gives a few knocks on the door hoping that someone will be alert.
Soon, a voice shouts and says, "Cheyenne, see who's at the door!"
Coraline looks up and sees someone staring at her from the second-floor window. Coraline gives a friendly wave back at the person. They leave the room and end up coming downstairs. Once the door opens, Coraline is able to see who it was, it was the new girl whose name is Cheyenne. Her face is pale, and she seems very introverted but seems happy to see a new face.
"Hi! Umm… my name is Coraline, and my mom wanted me to give you guys a gift as a welcoming to the Pink Palace Apartment.", Coraline says nervously.
"Oh. thanks,", said Cheyenne in a quiet, shy tone.
"Sorry that I startled you earlier today", Coraline says comfortably. "It was because of a boy who happens to be named Wyborn". Coraline chuckles at her comment.
Cheyenne smiles out of embarrassment as she remembers running back home from the incident.
"Well… my name is Cheyenne, and I was actually going to go for a walk before twilight", replied Cheyenne. "Thanks for the cookies by the way".
"Okay… Talk to you soon!", Coraline says as she walks away.
Coraline has a smile across her face as she finally had a chance to speak to the new neighbor that she plans to be friends with. She heads home to her room again and thinks about the plans she hopes to do tomorrow.
"We did it", Coraline says to herself with pride.
As she sits on her bed, she sees a glare of light from afar. It seems to be coming from the well Coraline concludes. A glowy blueish-purple color light seems to be beneath the well's lid. With haste, Coraline closes her window curtains and heads to her bed pretending that she didn't see what she saw. Fear of going through what she already went through has caused her to block off any interest in exploring and interest in supernatural substances. She ends up heading to bed and never leaves.
As Cheyenne walks through the night with her flashlight and notebook, she sees the glaring light as well and goes near it. Curiosity has filled her and causes her to attempt to figure where the light could be coming from. She slowly opens the lid of the well but doesn't' open it all the way. What she saw is like nothing she has ever seen. With fear, she runs back home leaving her flashlight and never looking back to grab her flashlight.
