The next morning, Ellie Mae heard her little sister crying. She raced to her room and began to comfort her.
"Ellie's here Zuzu, don't cry...Shh…" Ellie whispered. She glanced out the window and the sun was beginning to rise. "It's morning sweetheart...It's time to wake up…" Zoey rubbed her little eyes and Ellie Mae kissed her cheek
"Me had a nightmare…" Zoey whimpered
"I know...But you're awake now...those nasty dreams ain't gon' get ya…" Ellie proceeded to sway Zoey back and forth a little more.
The club started to get ready for the morning. Ellie Mae and Zoey walked in hand in hand.
"Morning y'all…" Ellie Mae called out.
"Morning Piano Keys…" The bandmates called out.
"Elizabeth...breakfast please…" the blonde woman told the young teen.
"Right away mam…"
"Now hold it there Jane, You can cook, can't you... why you make Ellie Mae do it…" the man on the drums asked.
"Because Rooster, she's grown enough to cook for all of us…" the blonde woman argued.
"That don't mean your lazy butt can't do it once in a while…" Rooster countered.
"Yeah, Mama...Why can't you cook pancake…" Jane angrily glared at her daughter Zoey
"Stay out of it…" She turned to Rooster and was about to open her mouth until
"Rooster I got this...I'm on it mam…" Ellie Mae solemnly walked to the kitchen and cooked breakfast.
While Ellie Mae was cooking the eggs for her family, Slow Drag, Rooster, and the trumpet player came and tapped her on the shoulder.
"You know...Your Daddy will disapprove of this if he sees you cookin for them…" the trumpet player told her.
"Mama and Daddy died when I was 5 remember Blowhorn…" Ellie Mae told him.
"You know we still have the option open…." Slow Drag reminded.
"It's sweet of y'all but I bet y'all got children of your own to take care of…" Ellie Mae shrugged it off. She didn't want to interfere in her bandmates' lives and her adoptive parents and even Zoey didn't want her to leave either.
"What's taking so long Ellie, We're starvin' here…" They hear Luther call. Ellie Mae was just about done making the breakfast and made her way to her family who gingerly ate it.
"Thank you, Ellie…" Zoey said with her mouth full. Ellie smiled and was about to take a bite of her food until
"Oh Honey, I gotta go, take Zoey to school okay…" Jane spoke lightly and she left, picking up Zoey and handed her to Ellie Mae and she walked off.
Ellie was about to open her mouth but Luther glared at her, making the blonde girl comply. The Bandmates witnessed everything and they gave off dismayed looks.
Then they heard the car start in the garage and Ellie Mae and Zoey went to see Jane about to drive off. She didn't take notice of either of the girls and Ellie Mae sighed out of her nose. Zoey looked at her sister and back to where her mother disappeared. She too didn't like her parents' treatment of Ellie Mae but she's always told to stay out of it.
"Ellie…" Zoey spoke.
"Yes Zuzu…"
"You….Your my real mama Ellie…" Zoey hugged her adoptive sister. Small tears rushed down her face and she glanced at the band members who all heard what the toddler said.
All Violet thought about was Ellie Mae and the mysterious powers that she saw at school. Her thoughts were interrupted by Helen snapping her fingers.
"Aren't you gonna finish those over-easy eggs, young lady…" Helen asked.
"No Mom, you can have them…" Violet mumbled.
"Hey, something on your mind…" Bob asked.
"Tony Rydinger…" Dash teased. Violet glared at her little brother.
"It's this new girl in my class...I think she has superpowers…" Violet told them.
"A girl with superpowers...Well You and her might get along just fine…" Bob reassured.
"Yeah sure…Her name is Ellie Mae…" Violet rolled her eyes.
"She sounds nice…" Helen told her.
Ellie Mae looked at herself in the mirror and She looked into her brown and blue eyes. She glanced at her light purple sweater and her jeans. She noticed her hair was in her face and slightly parted it to the right. Then she heard a door slam and she quickly turned around and saw Violet
"Hey, Vi Vi…"
"Don't you Vi Vi me...I know you have powers…" Violet pointed a finger at Ellie Mae.
"I don't know what you're talkin' about Violet…" Ellie Mae said meekly
"Don't you lie to me...I know you have powers...You were the one that stopped that car yesterday and controlled those instruments…" Violet crept closer to her
Ellie Mae luckily glanced around and saw that no one else was in the bathroom but them.
"You're hiding something from me...Come on...Spill the beans…" Violet towered over Ellie. She saw that Ellie Mae's left blue eye glowed and Ellie Mae pushed Violet back without touching her to the wall. A stunned Ellie Mae sees this and helped Violet up.
"I knew it...It's too late to hide it now…" Violet told Ellie Mae.
"Fine Fine Fine...You got me...I'll show you but you promise me not to say a word to anybody." It was Ellie Mae's turn to point a finger at Violet. "You Hear...You promise you won't say nothin'..."
"Fine, I won't say anything…" Violet swore. Then Ellie Mae dragged Violet into the largest stall in the bathroom. She cupped her brown hands and opened them to reveal a large black and white monochromatic caterpillar.
"Your powers bring in caterpillars?" Violet asked sarcastically.
"No...This fat wormy ain't real...I just tricked your mind into thinking that it is." then Ellie Mae closed her hands. Then She looked into Violet's eyes and her blue eye glowed once more. "Put your hands up…" then Violet followed her hypnotic command. Then Ellie Mae lifted herself off of the ground a little.
"This is just a demonstration…" Ellie Mae smiled awkwardly, snapping Violet out of her trance.
"So that's it…" Ellie Mae's smile turned into a frown.
"Whatchu mean that's it...You're the first person outside Zoey I ever showed my powers to...And please let it be that way…" Ellie Mae spoke. Then the bell rang and the girls quickly departed for class.
At lunch, Ellie Mae played piano, playing a classic Mozart symphony. She was taught to always practice with Mozart. Then she heard a saxophone behind her. She quickly turned to find a boy her age with a baby blue varsity jacket, a white shirt, dark blue jeans, and red sneakers. His skin was so dark it reminded Ellie Mae about his adoptive father's coffee beans. His hair was curly like her but it was very short and dark brown. He held a silver alto saxophone and his slick smile made Ellie Mae blush.
"So you must be the one and only Ellie…" the boy said. Even the boy's tenor voice made Ellie Mae jolt. "Uncle Blowhorn told me about chu…"
"You're-you're Sylvester…" Ellie Mae stuttered.
"So am I early for a little duo…" Sylvester asked.
"No your right on time suga plum…" Ellie Mae flirtatiously spoke back. "Shall I start…"
"Go right on ahead…"
Then a few students passing by heard a jazzy duet with a piano and saxophone. They saw Sylvester and Ellie Mae jamming out to a good song. They watched how Ellie Mae's fingers flew on the keys and Sylvester's tune perfectly synced in with Ellie Mae's.
Once the two were finished, the two turned around and heard applause from a bunch of students, including Violet and Tony. The two kids smiled at each other and took a bow.
After school, Ellie Mae asked Sylvester if he wanted to go with her to pick up Zoey and he said yes. When they reached the school and went inside, the 2 ½-year-old girls jumped into Ellie Mae's arms
"Mama Ellie…" Zoey cheered. Ellie Mae chuckled and rubbed her nose against the toddlers. Then Zoey spotted Sylvester.
"You have a fwiend…" Zoey pointed out.
"Zuzu This is Sylvester or Sylvie, Sylvester, this is my sister Zoey…"
"Nice you meet you…"
"I like you, Sylvie…" the two teens smiled at each other and walked to the jazz club.
When they got there, the band members gave the two a warm welcome.
"Hey, Sylvie…" Blowhorn had his arms wide
"Hey hey Uncle B…" the two boys wrapped their arms around each other in a bear hug, with Sylvester pulling Ellie Mae holding Zoey in. the room was filled with warm laughter until someone was clearing their throat.
"Ellie Mae, who's this…"
"This...This here is my nephew Sylvester...He play saxophone...Music is all in the genes…" Blowhorn enthusiastically introduced.
"He's Ellie's fwiend…" Zoey pointed.
Luther gave Ellie Mae a stern look, which is something that she didn't like.
"No matter, I'm here to introduce you to a beloved saxophone player, Dr. Lewis…" Luther stepped aside and a slim fair-skinned man dressed in a black suit with red stripes and black and grey striped tie.
"Well, Hello Dr. Lewis...My name is Elizabeth Mae...I am the piano player…"
Dr. Lewis saw how she looked and he didn't look impressed.
"You brought me a little girl…"
"I'm 15 thank you, sir…" Ellie Mae fought back.
"Elizabeth…" Luther growled.
"Is she trained?"
"The band taught her…" Luther nervously confirmed. Dr. Lewis looked at Luther and back at Ellie Mae and squinted his eyes.
"Let's see what you've got…" Dr. Lewis impatiently huffed. Ellie Mae smiled and ran to the red piano. She cracked her knuckles and began to play. The tune was soft at first then she switched to a much more jazzy tune. Sylvester was impressed by how versatile her playing style is. He grinned ear to ear and nudged his uncle, impressed.
When she finished, she heard at least a few applauses from Sylvester, the band members, and Zoey. Dr. Lewis looked at her with that same sneer and turned to Luther
"Can't you find me another piano player?" He asked. The bandmates were outraged by this.
"What's wrong with Ellie Mae...She just played you some good music…" Sylvester asked
"I need someone-"
"Now hold on a minute...is it because I'm a girl or I'm too young.." Ellie Mae asked curiously.
"Don't you start-" Luther warned her
"It's a bit of both sweetheart...I don't think you have what it takes"
"I'll have you know that I've played in this band since I was five years old...I just love a little tune…" Ellie Mae continued.
"Elizabeth…" Luther growled started to get closer to his daughter.
"Father, you know how long I've been playing in this club with the band...I can play just as well as any adult you bring up in here…" Ellie Mae spoke.
"Well, at least they're not poorly mannered like you…"
"I ain't rude...I'm just simply trying to prove my point, how many 15-year-olds do you know playing piano like this...Nobody...Father, I can do this and you know it…"
Finally, at his last straw, Luther slapped Ellie Mae across the face with his backhand, leaving a slight red mark on her face. It shocked everyone around her that he would do this to his own child. It even shocked Zoey. Then Ellie Mae began to run off. After cooling down a little Luther turned to Dr. Lewis
"I apologize for her, She's just a little brat you see…" Then Zoey had enough of this
"Stop it, Daddy…" Zoey kicked her own father on the shin.
"Zoey…" Luther tried his best to stay calm with his daughter.
"I won't wike you, If you hurt Mama Ellie" then Zoey ran in the direction Ellie Mae went.
Then a disgusted Dr. Lewis leaves, having seen enough, leaving Luther disappointed.
Ellie Mae sat in her bedroom, reading a newspaper, trying her best to ice down the pain on her cheek with an ice pack wrapped in a towel. Her eyes squinted as soon as she saw a headline about an explosion.
"Explosion on 7th Ave, at 3:45...the explosion is caused by an unknown source, luckily the supers got everyone out in time…" She read quietly. Then she heard a knock on the door.
"Y'all can come in…" Ellie Mae said. Then the bandmate came in with a man with dark skin, a grey turtleneck, black slacks, and loafers came in.
"We brought in someone who knew your real dad…." Slow Drag whispered.
"Sorry for a bit of a late introduction, the names Lucius Best…" the man spoke in a slick voice, extending out a hand
"I'm Ellie Mae…" The young girl's suspicion of this man began to come down.
"Shall we let you two have a moment…" Blowhorn asked. Ellie Mae nodded and the band slowly left the room, leaving Lucius and Ellie Mae together.
"So you know my real father…" the teen asked.
"Yeah...I was a close friend of him…" Lucius replied gently. "He was a real nice man...He was a part of the band too…"
Then Ellie Mae pulled out a picture from her drawer. She purposefully hid it so her adoptive father wouldn't find it. It was a picture of her as a five-year-old with her parents. Her father was black and her mother was white. They were all smiling in the photo. All Ellie Mae could do was sigh sadly.
"I wish they were here…"
"Me too…" then Lucius spotted the slap mark on her face and he created an iceball in front of the girls
"You too…" Lucius smiled and nodded. "I'm glad I'm not the only one…" Ellie Mae showed him a demonstration of her powers and he was shocked.
"Why did you hide your powers…" He asked. Ellie Mae sighed
"Luther doesn't do so well with supers...calls 'em lazy, no good folks...That's why I have to hide them...only Zuzu knows about them…" Lucius tilted his head and then Ellie Mae pointed outside of her room where there was a small crib.
"Oh…"
"Yeah…"
"You know...Things are gonna get better soon for you…" Lucius reassured her.
Ellie Mae just looked at the ground. She wasn't too sure about that. She just sighed sadly. "I'll see you again later…"
"Okay...Goodbye Mr. Lucius…" Ellie Mae said despondently. Lucius just frowned at her depressed mood. It took out an envelope, gave it to her, and walked out of the door. Ellie Mae looked at it, took a deep breath, and placed it in her drawer along with her picture so Luther couldn't find it.
