Chapter 2

Emma lay in bed thinking about everything that had happened in the past two weeks. She really liked living with Ruby and Granny even if the woman could come off as brisk. At least she knew where she stood and didn't have to worry about Ruby trying to make her life miserable. The night Emma found out Leopold was getting let off with nothing more than a warning, the blonde had been quiet and secluded herself into her room. Granny had come in and sat on Emma's bed, putting her hand on Emma's.

"Let it out." She said, her voice calm and caring.

Emma sighed and wiped at a tear. "Why? It doesn't matter. I don't matter; never have and never will."

"You do matter, sweet girl."

"I don't! This isn't the first time a foster parent has hurt me. Sure, it was 'just a hit' and could have been worse, but I still have a black eye! But that doesn't matter. All that matters is that he has money and a god lawyer, so he got off free" She wiped angrily at her eyes, her voice getting softer. "Do you know how humiliating and demoralizing it feels sometimes? To always have to 'be good' or be thrown away? To have the bio child lie about you just to get you in trouble – and you can't deny it! If you deny it, you're calling their precious little angel a liar, so you have to take a punishment you don't deserve while they watch and gloat. All the while they're doing that, you're still hoping they keep you because you can't stand the thought of starting all over again. It's humiliating to be smacked around so hard you end up on the floor and everyone is looking down at you like you deserved what happened. Just because I'm a foster kid does not mean I'm worthless and I'm so tired of people making me feel that way."

"Of course, you're not worthless, Emma." Granny said, pulling the blonde into her arms and hugging her tightly. She knew this girl just poured her heart out to her and that took courage. She was not about to let it go unheard. "I am so sorry that people have made you feel that way. You're right; he has money and got away with it and it is not fair, and I am so sorry." She rubbed Emma's back. "Take a day and be upset. Then, pull yourself up and prove him and the others wrong; show them they have not won, and they are not better than you." She softly stroked Emma's cheek. "I'm here for you, sweet girl, and I always will be."

Emma closed her eyes, soaking in the love this woman made her feel. "And what do I do if he or his daughter come into the Diner?"

"You come and get me or Ruby and we will see to him. Emma, you know you don't have to work there, right?"

"I know, but I want to. It's good to have experience before I age out of the system. At least that way, I have something to fall back on if none of my college scholarships go through. I'm getting close to that point and have to be ready."

"Emma love, when I took you in, I didn't take you as an emergency or temporary case. You're here with me as a long-term placement meaning until you're eighteen at least. I'm not letting you age out of the system with nothing. I know you don't understand this because somehow, no one has never shown you how special and important you are, but I am not going to throw you away ever. You and Ruby are my girls and you always will be."

Emma smiled as she remembered that and remembered how – even if it was hard to believe – it felt so good to finally feel loved and wanted. Ruby was great too. It was like instantly having a sister who was your best friend and Emma couldn't believe it. She had never before become so close to what she called a 'bio child' before. Ruby never tried to get Emma in trouble, never lied about her or even complained. Sure, it was early days, but usually by the second week, Emma would have already been hit or yelled at or punished in some way for something she didn't do.

Regina had been over a few times and she had been to the Mills' manor once since that first night. She liked Henry a lot as he seemed exactly the kind of father any girl would love. Cora was a bit stricter but had a soft side that she tried – and failed – to hide. Henry was the mayor and Cora was a partner at a law firm. Emma wondered if she was one of Leopold's lawyers, but if she was, she never made Emma feel like she looked down on her.

Mary Margaret was a different kettle of fish entirely. The night Emma had been hit, she seemed shocked and even scared of her father. The next day, she was quiet when Eva talked to Emma and apologized, and Emma really thought that maybe she had judged the girl wrongly. However, once Leo was released and MM found out her mother was not letting him back home, the teen decided it was all Emma's fault. Though everyone, including David, had tried to reason with her that it was her father's fault for what he did, she was having none of it. Eva even tried telling her that they had been on the brink of divorce anyway due to his emotional and verbal abuse that she had kept from MM. Again, the teen was not having it. Eva couldn't legally keep MM from her father, for now, so she had to just let it be.

Emma was nervous about the summer since MM's friends were also Regina's friends, but it seemed pretty obvious that other than David, no one wanted to hang out with MM if they didn't have to. The days Emma didn't work, she often went to the beach with Ruby, Regina, Mal, Zelena and Ella. Sometimes Thomas and Killian would join them, and Emma found she really liked this group of people. One thing that confused her was that her and Regina hadn't done much more than kiss every now and then and she wondered if she had done something wrong.

Finally, one day, she and Regina finally were able to talk about it. The two were sitting on the Toll Bridge, feet dangling, and Emma finally bit the bullet. "Regina? Did I do something wrong?"

"What? When?"

"When we…were in the shower." Emma said, blushing. She looked down at the water. "It's just…we had just met that day and then we haven't done anything since."

Regina shifted and faced Emma, taking her hand. "Emma, I'm going to say something, and I don't want you to take this the wrong way. I wish we wouldn't have done what we did." When she saw hurt in Emma's face, she felt horrible. "No, not because I regretted it but because…you're so special, Emma. I wish we'd have waited so I could have known you better. I…I've been afraid you would think I used you."

After Emma let Regina's words sink in and she no longer felt so hurt, she gave an understanding nod. "I get it. I never felt like you were using me, but I totally get what you're saying." She also shifted and faced Regina more. "I…don't take this the wrong way, but I'm so used to never staying in one place too long and when you wanted me…I was afraid that may be my only chance. I didn't use you, I swear, but I also didn't want to put it off…you know?"

Regina smiled softly. "I get it. I'm glad you didn't get sent away though."

"That's thanks to you for talking to Granny. I'm glad too. I mean it's weird to be in the same town as Leo and MM, but I really like it here. Granny said she'll keep me for long term, which is more than I could ask for, and for some reason, I believe her."

"I'm glad you do because she's not the kind of woman that would say that and take it back." Regina bit her lip. "That night, you said it was your first time…well, willingly. Was that true? Because what you did to me in the shower the next morning was amazing for someone who hadn't done it before."

Emma blushed at that. "Yeah. I mean, I've been attracted to girls for as long as I can remember, but that's another reason for foster parents to be against you, so I never admitted it."

Regina took Emma's hand. "I'm sorry anything was ever forced on you."

Emma shrugged. "I don't like to talk about it, but it was never much more than having to touch and be touched." She squeezed Regina's hand. "I know we're young, but Regina I really like you. Honestly, if it weren't for you, I would have wanted to leave town."

"I like you too, Emma and I'm sorry I didn't talk to you before about why we haven't done more than kissing."

Emma bit her lip. "Any way I can get you to change your mind?"

Regina smirked. "Miss me, Miss Swan?" She asked, her hands running down Emma's back.

"You have no idea." Emma whispered, her lips ghosting along Regina's neck. "But I'm not so sure about doing this out here and in the open."

Regina smirked, her hands trailing up under Emma's shirt to squeeze at her breasts. "Where's your sense of adventure, Swan?"

Before Emma could answer, they heard footsteps and broke apart just in time as a woman pushing a stroller came to the bridge. "Oh, hello girls. Lovely day." She said, passing them.

"Yes, Mrs. Williams, it sure is." Regina said, smirking as Emma blushed.

"Oh dear, you look like you may be getting burned." The woman said, looking at Emma. "Better get some sunscreen on."

"Yes, ma'am." Emma mumbled and Regina could barely contain her laugh.

When the woman left, Regina smirked and kissed Emma's cheek. "That was fun."

"It was humiliating." Emma said, but there was a hint of a smile. "We can try to sneak into my room, but Granny's got ears like a wolf."

"Oh, I know. When Ruby and I were little we would try to sneak down to the dinner's kitchen and get left over pie, but she always heard us." Regina chuckled. "Unfortunately, my mom is meeting with a client in her home office, so she asked that Zelena and I stay out for a bit." She bit her lip. "I mean, we have my car…"

Emma let out a laugh. "Seriously? And where would we park it where others won't see?"

"If you're serious, I do know a place." Regina stood, wiping her cut off shorts as she started walking to her car. "I mean, you're the one who said you miss me, and I can only assume that includes my ass."

Emma smirked and got up, rushing towards Regina. She gave Regina's ass a smack. "I have missed all of you."

"Then let's go, Miss Swan."

Emma chewed her lip as Regina drove further into the woods. "Where are we going?"

"You'll see." Regina said with a grin.

They pulled up to an almost hidden cabin. "What? Who's house is this?"

Regina chuckled. "This is our cabin." She smirked. "You really think I'd take you in the back of my mom's car?"

"I…um…no?"

Regina laughed and then kissed Emma. "You are adorable. Come on."

Emma got out of the car and looked up. "Regina, you may want to put the roof up on the car; it looks like rain."

Regina looked up and then hit a button, causing the roof on the car to close. "Good call." She then went up and unlocked the cabin. "Come on in. It's not much, but it's comfy."

Emma came in and looked around. The living area had a sofa and some chairs along with coffee table all facing a fireplace. The kitchen was minimal, but enough for a weekend away. There was a loft space upstairs and a bedroom and bathroom off the living area. "It's cute." She said, giving Regina a smile.

"We don't come as often as we used to, but I like it." She said, then looked at Emma. In the next moment, she was kissing Emma, pressing her against the now closed door.

Their bodies pressed against each other and Emma's hands went up the back of Regina's shirt, moaning as her tongue met Regina's. They clumsily kissed as they moved to the sofa and Emma found herself on her back as Regina pushed her down and landed on top of her.

"You're wearing far too many clothes, Emma." Regina said as she kissed Emma's neck.

"So are you."

Regina smirked and stood back up, pulling Emma up with her. "Come on. The couch is too small." She pulled Emma into the bedroom and raised a brow when Emma stopped. "What?"

"Isn't…isn't this where your parents…sleep?"

"So? The only other option is the bunk bed upstairs and I'm sorry, but that's not happening." She watched Emma as she took her shirt off. "The sheets are clean." She then took her bra off and cupped her own breasts. "Come on, Emma."

Emma watched her and let out a moan. "Okay, okay fine." She said, going to Regina and taking a nipple into her mouth and sucking it. Regina chuckled and lifted Emma's shirt, throwing it aside before undoing her bra and doing the same.

"I forgot how damn sexy you are, Miss Swan." Regina said, undoing Emma's jean shorts.

Emma did the same with Regina's and blushed. "Are you kidding me? I'm nothing compared to you. I don't even know why someone as amazing and beautiful as you would find me attractive."

Regina stopped what she was doing and looked at Emma, lifting her chin. "Never let me hear you say that again. Emma, you are beautiful inside and out and you should not be selling yourself short. Of course, I find you attractive, but it's not just your physical beauty, it's who you are."

Emma felt tears in her eyes, but she gave a small smile. "Thank you. I…I'm sorry if I upset you."

"The only thing that upset me was that you think so little of yourself. It upsets me that people have made you think so little of yourself."

"I…I'm sorry." Emma looked down and hugged herself, feeling like she ruined the moment.

Regina felt horribly guilty, realizing that now Emma may never say what she feels if she thinks she's going to upset her. "Emma, I'm sorry. I want you to tell me how you feel always, and I'm so sorry if I've made you feel like your feelings aren't valid. I just…I wish you could see you the way I see you."

Emma gave a small shrug. "Maybe one day. I mean, you do make me feel worth something. You, Ruby, and Granny, all in your different ways are making me feel like I'm someone and maybe even someone special." She lifted her eyes and looked at Regina. "Did I ruin this moment?"

Regina pulled Emma to her, their breasts pushing against each other. "No, you didn't."

An hour later, the girls were panting as they lay in bed holding each other. Emma smiled as she kissed Regina some more, but then jumped as the lights flickered off and thunder crashed above them. "Shit!" She let out, laying down with her hand over her pounding heart. Ever since Emma was six, she was terrified of storms.

Regina noticed Emma shaking and she covered them. "Are you cold?"

"Did you not just hear that thunder?" Emma asked, incredulously.

"Well yeah, but it's just a storm." Regina said and then realized Emma wasn't cold; she was terrified. "Oh, Em; I'm sorry, I didn't know you were scared."

"It's fine. I…I'm fi…fuck!" She yelled, cowering under the covers as more thunder and lighting came. Then the rain came, and it was a big storm. "Do…do we have to drive in that?" She asked, peaking out of the blanket.

"No." Regina said and bit her lip. "But we should let our parents know where we are."

Emma gave a nod and reached for her phone. She dialed Granny who answered on the first ring. "Emma? Are you okay? The storm is bad out there."

"Yeah, Regina and I are at her cabin because she wanted to show it to me. Granny, I don't think we'll be leaving for a while."

"Honey, I don't think you'll be leaving at least for tonight. The storm is going to last for hours and then it'll be too muddy to drive back. Are you two going to be okay?"

Emma looked at Regina who took the phone and put it on speaker. "Hi Granny, it's Regina. We'll be okay. Zelena and I actually were coming up here tomorrow night anyway, so we have food and everything that we can cook on the fire if the power goes out. I'll take good care of Emma."

"Oh, I trust you. I'm just glad you'll have food. If this gets as bad as they say, you may be stuck there tomorrow too. Have you called your parents?"

"I was just about to."

Emma took the phone back. "I…I'm not in trouble?" She asked in a quiet voice.

"Why ever would you be in trouble, child?" Granny asked, a sadness in her voice. "Emma, this storm popped up out of nowhere. You're safe, you called me, there's no reason for you to be in trouble." Her voice was soft. "Emma, please stop thinking you're going to be in trouble for every little thing. I'm not going to get mad at you for going out with your girlfriend."

Emma tried to blink her tears as she turned from Regina. She stood and wrapped a blanket around her as she moved to a chair while Regina talked to her mother. "I'm sorry. I don't…I'm not saying you're a bad person, Granny. I just…" She sniffed. "I'm not used to not being in trouble for every little thing. I'm sorry."

"Oh sweetheart, you don't have to be sorry." Granny said softly. "And please don't cry. I know it's hard to change your way of thinking after so long, so I do get it. Just please try your best to relax and be a kid, Emma. You don't have much longer, and you haven't had much time at all, but now you do. Try to relax and have a good time tonight."

Emma smiled and sniffed. "Thanks so much, Granny. Honestly, thank you. Have a good night." They disconnected and Emma wiped her face before looking at Regina. "Your mom upset?"

"She's worried, but not upset. We should plug our phones in just in case the power goes out. We should probably also start on some food and a fire."

"We should probably get dressed first." Emma said with a chuckle.

"Why? No one is out here and it's just us. Let's stay naked all night." Regina said with a grin.

Emma pulled the blanket tighter around her as more thunder crashed. "I…it's cold. Plus, are you really supposed to cook naked?"

Regina chuckled. "Fine, a compromise." She said, making her way upstairs. She came down with two large t-shirts that she and her sister would use to put over their swim suites when they'd walk down to the river to swim. "This and I suppose underwear if you're so inclined."

Emma took the shirt. "Thank you." She slipped it on and found it went to her knees, so she decided that would be all she'd wear. She then plugged in her phone and looked at Regina. "I have no idea how to start a fire."

Regina smiled. "Let's do that then." She slipped her shirt on and took Emma's hand and went to the living room. She showed Emma how to start the fire and once it was going, she put the fire screen in front of it. "Now, do you want the real camping experience and roast hot dogs in the fire and open a can of beans or we can do steak and potatoes over the fire with beans or corn."

"That sounds amazing. You know how to cook that?"

"I do." Regina said. "I can make it in the oven or on the stove, but it tastes better this way."

The two got the potatoes, onions, and carrots cut and put in tin foil with butter. Regina put those on the rack over the fire first and then went back to season the steak. They decided on just cooking one since it was so big. Emma took the corn off the cob and put it in a pot as they decided to use the stove for that.

An hour later and the two were stuffed. It was still raining hard outside as they did dishes, but at least the thunder and lightning had calmed down. It was late now and after taking a shower, they lay in bed, cuddled in each other's arms. Emma smiled softly at Regina before kissing her nose. "Regina I…I've never felt about anyone else the way I feel about you."

"I feel the same, Emma. I don't know what the future holds, but what I do know is I hope it includes us for a long, long time."

"Me too." Emma said, smiling as her eyes fell heavy. "Me too."
