First meets Cass.

Varian, 4 years old.

Cassandra stands beside her dad, mimicking his stance, mostly. Her first time watching the people stating their complaints, and walking out with the royal's answer. It was boring and she was getting tired. So she leaned on him for support.

A large man came in carrying a small boy, his son she guessed, against his chest. The boy squirmed in his grasp, trying to escape. He seemed completely unfazed by the boy attempting to stab his arm with a stick.

It broke in the attempt and the father picked up the pieces that had fallen. He gives a report of Old Corona and bows at the end. She wanders off to see what they would do next.

Quirin see the Captain's daughter peering at them from behind a curtain.

"do you need something, Ma'am?"

she stands straighter and walks up to him. She points at the boy, "is he your son?"

"yes."

"then why is he trying to escape?" she asks suspiciously.

"ask him."

she looks at the grumpy boy, "why are you trying to escape?"

"I wanna read a book. Daddy won't let me." he says, pouting.

This kid was half her size and he wanted to read a book? She didn't care about books, it was just words on paper. There wasn't even pictures. "why?"

"he loves to read and so he snuck off to the library when I wasn't looking."

"and the stick?"

"it fit in his pocket."

"can we get candy?" the boy asks.

"later. Do you have anymore questions, Miss?"

"no. carry on." she walks away.

Behind her the boy asks, "does she work here?"

"her father's the Captain of the guard."

"that's not what I asked." he says, annoyed.

"no, she does not. Now curb the attitude or we're not getting candy."

"sorry."

she rolls her eyes, that kid must be one big pain in the butt.

I think Cass thought that Varian the dangerous wizard and Varian the annoying kid were different people. If you were told about a dangerous wizard wouldn't you assume he was at least thirty years old?
