"Up! Get up! Now!"
Our horrid aunt woke me and my twin brother up with a jump. I almost kicked him in the head because of it.
"Up!" she shouted again
This time I tried to fix my messy, shoulder length, black hair and my unevenly cut fringe. I tapped Harry to wake him up more.
"Are you up yet?" she demanded
Harry said "Nearly." back at her while I didn't answer but I was trying to sit up.
"Well get a move on, Harry I want you to look after the bacon. Carly clean the kitchen. Don't you dare mess anything up, I want everything to be perfect on Duddy's birthday."
Harry groaned but I nudged him in the ribs while I was finding my headband to control my hair at least a bit.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing." Harry answered back to Aunt Petunia's snap
We tried to dress ourselves but it was so tight even with our small and skinny body. We look even skinnier with our fat cousin's old clothes.
I try not to talk to anyone much, Harry was an exception. I don't want to add more commotion when we were our cousin, Dudley's, favorite punch bag, because we were an easy target. Harry and I almost have the same major features, jet black hair, thin face, but Harry's eyes are green while mine's hazel. He wore flimsy glasses but I don't, I look like my mother, (I overheard my aunt complaining about my face looking like 'her' which I knew she was referring to our mother because of how much Aunt Petunia despises her) Harry had this lightning scar though, which we don't clearly know where it came from. We were the Potter twins, I could remember the Dursleys saying 'Potter' was our last name only once or twice as far as I know.
We have never met our parents properly, they apparently died in a car crash, Aunt Petunia and her husband Uncle Vernon said so. Every time we ask about it they always say "Don't ask questions"
We exited the cupboard and was met by our uncle's daily grunts.
"Harry, comb your hair. Carly tie up that ugly fringe of yours." our uncle grunted at the look of our usually messy hair
I finished wiping the counter and Harry put the plates of egg and bacon when Dudley arrived in the kitchen. He kept on complaining about how many presents he got. I imagine myself stealing the presents in a secretive way, but of course I won't do it, I don't want us to get into trouble.
The phone rang and Aunt Petunia sighed when she answered it.
"Bad news, Vernon," she said
"Mrs. Figg's broken her leg. She can't take them," she jerked her head in our direction
Dudley's mouth fell open in horror but I had a surprised face and Harry looked like his heart gave a leap. It was a shock 'cuz every year we were left in the hands of Mrs. Figg while Dudley's parents brought him and a friend to anywhere.
"Now what?" Aunt Petunia looked at us like it was all planned out. Well I could plan something like that but would never do it.
While the couple figured out a plan, Harry interrupted them suggesting if we (me and Harry) could stay in the house. I walked up to Harry, I sighed quietly and teased "That won't work." under my breath so that only he could hear it.
"And what come back and find the house in ruins?" our aunt snarled
"We won't blow up the house." he answered but none of them were listening to him
"I would, if I can" I whispered to him in my usual croaky and cracked voice. He gave out a quiet chuckle
Aunt said we can come but stay in the car but Uncle Vernon contradicted with "That car's brand new they-" he pointed at us "-won't be sitting in it alone."
Dudley started to cry loudly until his friend, Piers Polkiss, came.
Half an hour later, I was sitting in the car with Dudley, Piers and Harry. Well I was sitting on the floor of the car in front of Harry's seat. I was so skinny I could easily sit on the floor. Harry tried offering his seat but I kept on insisting that I was smaller and he should sit in the chair instead.
Our aunt and uncle didn't know what to do with us so they thought to just bring us and hope we won't cause any trouble. Before we left, Uncle Vernon stared at us and warned "I'm warning both of you now- any funny business, anything at all- and you two will be in that cupboard from now on until Christmas."
"Were not going to do anything," said Harry. I nodded and said "honestly..." But no one believed us.
Harry and I somehow cause shenanigans anywhere and there's no point telling the Dursleys that we didn't do any of that. Like one time our Aunt tried to cut my fringe to even it up, the next morning it was back to it's uneven and long self. She also tried cutting Harry's hair until he was bald except for his fringe to cover up his 'ugly' scar, his hair grew back like no one ever cut it.
The Dursleys often say I'm small and quiet but terrible. When I was little they thought I turned mute because they didn't heard my voice much, they liked that though. Harry said to them countless times that I'm not mute and I can talk, but now in rare occasions I talk back to them.
I also got in trouble for burning the end of Dudley's trousers when Dudley's gang were chasing me and Harry at school. The headmistress complained that I was carrying a lighter in school grounds, but even I didn't know what happened, I didn't carry a lighter. Me and Harry were punished to stay in the cupboard for 2 weeks.
Today, we swore to ourselves that we wouldn't ruin our once in a lifetime trip. In the car, Uncle Vernon kept on complaining about things, as usual. This morning it was motorbikes. He kept blabbing about motorcyclist and in my surprise Harry interrupted again.
"I had a dream about a motorbike," Harry suddenly remembered
"It was flying."
Weird, I thought.
"I had the same dream, what the hell." I whispered to Harry but unfortunately, Dudley heard it too and told his parents
Our Uncle turned beetroot red "MOTORBIKES DON'T FLY!"
Dudley and Piers sniggered
"We know it doesn't," Harry defended "It was just a dream we somehow shared."
Uncle Vernon grunted once more. A few minutes later we arrived in the zoo. Dudley and Piers bought large chocolate ice creams in the entrance while Harry and I had a cheap lemon ice lolly, it was surprisingly good, I never enjoyed food that much.
Harry and I had the best morning we had in a very long time. I tried to stay away from the Dursleys so that bored Dudley and Piers didn't get any ideas, Harry followed me through the exhibits. We ate in the zoo restaurant and as always, Dudley had a tantrum. Uncle Vernon bought him more food and they let me and Harry share his old food.
I knew that the day was too good for the unfortunate twins.
It happened, Harry let loose of a Boa Constrictor and Dudley fell into the exhibit. Apparently the glass just vanished. Harry told me he didn't do anything but I heard him muttering nonsense, it was like he was talking to a snake.
We were shut in the cupboard when we got home.
"I didn't do anything, Harry did it." I said even though I didn't want to leave Harry alone there
Uncle Vernon had the breath to say "No- Go- Cupboard- Stay- No- Meals." before he collapsed in his chair.
Me and my twin were now trapped inside the cupboard. At night Harry gets food for us, but most nights, I say I'm not hungry.
