Jo couldn't stop squinting at the green, swooping and elegant words inked out across the yellowish parchment, blaming it for the fatigue drenching her bones following four nights of poor sleep.

Her mother took one glance and chalked it up to anxiety. Soon she left for work with a brief hug and kiss on her cheek.

"This is worse than applyin' f'r uni again," Jo mumbled, resting her head against the arm of the sofa. Reaching for a cushion, her arms paused mid-movement when Kolya leapt next to her belly, and pulled him closer to her chest.

Huddled together for warmth, Jo decided to close her eyes for several minutes and tucked the refolded letter in her pocket.

In hindsight, she should've known it would suck her into the late hours of the afternoon. The nightmares rarely visited anymore when she had Kolya by her side.
