I woke to find the pups looking down at me. They had moved me to my bed and covered me with blankets. I shivered. My dream came crashing back. Silverstar, Kittypaw's plan, Spirit, the full moon warning.
"Where's the kits?" I demand.
"In Kittypaw's pup house." Chase answers.
"Where's Kittypaw?"
"Dead." Marshall said.
"Where is she?"
"You boys are so dense. She's down there Ryder." Skye says.
"I need Scarlet. Now." I say. The pups looked at me surprised. I reach down and pick up her Pup Tag. I look at the sky. The moon will reach its highest peak in thirty minutes!
A few minutes later Skye brings Scarlet in. "Everyone except for Scarlet, OUT!" I wasn't going to take any of that 'Ryder's so grief stricken he's going crazy' shit.
"Ryder?" Scarlet looks at me with confusion clouding her gaze.
"Here." I say and put Kittypaw's Pup Tag on her. "I have a plan to bring Mommy back."
Her eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Yes. You have to activate this diamond and get it working. Kittypaw will do the rest." I say.
She stands tall, tail fluffed out. "I can feel you all around me, thickening the air I'm breathing, Holding on to what I'm feeling, savoring this heart that's healing! And so I cry. The light is white, and I see you…"
I couldn't watch. I just listened. Then, I heard the best sound in the world.
"Scarlet, meet Spirit." Kittypaw said. I turn around and hug her so hard she whimpers. "Ryder, I love you too! Now, knock it off!" She tugs my shirt playfully.
"I missed you!" I cry into her fluffy fur. She buries her muzzle into my shirt and breathes deeply with her eyes closed. "What are you doing?"
"There wasn't any of your scent up there! It was horrible!" She looks up and licks my face.
Skye bursted through the door. "Kittypaw! How did you-"
Scarlet puts her paw on Skye's mouth. "Shh. They're having a moment." She whispered. I sighed, relief making me feel weak.
"Let's get you back into bed. Rest will help." Kittypaw said.
I climbed back onto my bed and collapsed. She hopped up beside me and curled up with her head on my chest. I pet her as I drift into a fitful sleep.
"What do you want from me?" I yell. I get no answer.
I woke to feel myself shaking. Kittypaw gives my arm a lick. "You're not still having nightmares, are you?"
"Y-y-yes…" I stammer.
"It's okay. They won't hurt you." She licked my arm again. I gave her a scratch behind the ear.
When I woke next, sunlight was streaming through my window, and I heard the commotion of voices outside of my bedroom. I get up and go to investigate. As I open the door, the pups look at me wagging their tails.
"Ryder, can you believe it? It's Kittypaw!" Marshall barked.
I looked down as she sat and scratched her ear. "Yes I-"
"She's alive!" Rocky adds.
"Yes. I know. She slept with me last night." I say. I walk past everyone and move on to breakfast. But as I looked at what we had, I realized that I'm not hungry. I leave the kitchen and go to watch TV.
Kittypaw stalks up and leaps on the carpet. "Ryder! whatcha watchin'?"
"The news." I said. Kittypaw climbed up and curled so that her nose was off the couch. I sigh. Then my Puppad rang and Kittypaw automatically lifted her head.
"Ryder here." I introduced.
"Ryder, the playground is on fire!" Before I could respond Kittypaw shouts for Marshall to go put out the fire. I sighed yet again.
"When will I be able to go on missions again?" I ask after hanging up.
"I don't know. It depends." She answers.
"Depends on what?" I ask.
"Whether the diamond is finished or not."
"How do you figure that out?" I give her a look of dismay.
"When your breathing isn't shallow." She answered without hesitation. "Sighing doesn't help."
"Well, I guess I have to sit around and do nothing, right?" I asked, disappointed.
"No. We can all do something together." She yipped.
"Like what?" I asked.
"Like a board game!" Kittypaw jumps up and pulls out a game of Monopoly. We begin playing and continue this for hours.
(I'm too lazy to put in the full description of the game, sorry.)
I sigh as Kittypaw gets a 'get out of jail free card.' "Hey, no sighing! You're not healed completely yet!" She smacks my face with her tail and I burst out laughing. She growls as I cash in money to get a castle. I have so many castles that I'm rich! Kitty keeps getting caught in my traps. I snicker as she lands on another.
Then, she finally goes broke. "I WIN!" I shout.
Kittypaw's ears go flat. "Let me get another game so it'll be easier to take my revenge." She slinks over to get another game, but then my Puppad rang.
"Hello, Ryder here." I say.
"Ryder, I'm havin' huge problems with my train! It all happened after a mysterious shadow came and went. Then my engine freaked!" Said a teenage country girl, probably new to driving the train.
"The PAW Patrol is on it! No job is too big, no pup is too small!" I chant.
Kittypaw's tail twitches in front of me. "Nope. The pups and I will handle it. You get to sit here and watch TV."
"Hey, I'm better!" I protest.
"Yeah, okay. You go drive an ATV with shallow breathing. HeLlO hEaRt AtTaCk!" She spat. I groan. "Stop it! That's worse than sighing!"
"Fine." I say, then add under my breath, "I'll walk there."
Then she turns around. "No. You won't. Any physical stuff can give you a heart attack. I can't bring you back to life a second time!"
"Okay, okay, you have my word. I'll sit right here and do nothing."
"Is that sarcastic?" She asked me.
"No. Enjoy leader practice." I say, a plan forming in my thoughts.
YES! That took a while. Anyway, I'm going through a emotional and medical crisis right now, so I'll try to do as much writing as I can, but I'll be going a bit slower than usual.
And thanks to MarshalV2018 once again for giving me continuous support and encouragement.
