Chapter Two: The Gamer
~000~
"Maybe I didn't make myself clear the first time," Kallen said in their Hideout. "You can't be seen near that store again. Suzaku Kururugui needs to be ignored, plain and simple."
"We need all the help we can get. Think about it, he has more reason to fight with us than any other person in the country," said Ohgi. "He'd be the first one here with any real Knightmare training."
"I'm not a bad pilot myself," Kallen said.
"We're not saying you are," Tamaki said. "But this new top-secret project they've got Kururugui on is supposedly the highest spec Knightmare made in decades. We could crush the Brittanians with it."
"Yeah and he could use said Knightmare to arrest us. Or worse, wipe us out in seconds." sighed Kallen. "For now we need to face the facts. Brittania's top recruit would never be a good member of our group."
Ohgi nodded. "We do need to face the facts. We've been at this for a year, and the only thing we've accomplished is assassinating the Queen. By accident, our real target was Crown Prince Lelouch."
"And it won't happen again," Kallen assured.
"In case it hasn't been obvious." Ohgi held the bridge of his nose. "The Crown Prince will be impossible to kill after we already tried. We need to lay as low as possible and pray they don't find us after what we did."
"Prince Schneizel and Cornelia have been trying for months," Kallen said. "If they haven't found us already they won't do it soon."
"So what do we do?" asked Tamaki.
Kallen sighed. "For now we wait like Ohgi said. There's no way Kururugui betrayed his country the day his Queen was killed."

Lelouch waved his hand through the screen that appeared. He then looked around the hallway, the few doctors and nurses who had noticed Lelouch crying hadn't seen the strange blue window that appeared in front of him.
Unable to have any sort of effect on the screen, Lelouch tapped it after shifting his body so that the doctors couldn't see him trying to touch what must be to them invisible screens.

Lelouch quickly considered what he just read. He had no military logistical or combat knowledge, and if he wanted to catch his mother's killers he would need plenty of both, whoever they were. And he knew that if Cornelia and Schneizel, seasoned veterans of warfare, couldn't catch them after weeks of trying, he would need to take matters into his own hands.
This Gamer power seemed to let him learn anything in a fraction of the time it would normally require.
First, he'd need to physically prepare himself for battle, either by training and or learning how to pilot Knighmares. The Gamer would easily smooth the transition from Crown Prince to the warrior his mother became legendary for.
Secondly, the Gamer itself seemed to make Lelouch much more powerful in every way. If he already had above average intelligence and wisdom, by using a few skill points he could get even smarter, and so faster than anyone else. By that same logic, just by doing a few pushups or regular exercises, he could increase his STR stat and get stronger quickly.
Curious to see more, Lelouch tapped the screen before another appeared.

The skills Lelouch had made sense to him. His father and Schneizel mostly knew that having Lelouch run the country when there were far more competent people than him as well as just getting him the best tutors around were serve far better than preparing him to govern and be King.
However, Lelouch planned to prepare himself to rule after he finished getting revenge on his mother's killers. He still was a bit curious as to what this 'Geass' power was exactly.

While Lelouch saw his new life's purpose, getting revenge on Marriane's killers as anything but a literal video game, he still hit accept.
It wouldn't be an easy quest by any measure. Lelouch was taught things like Geometry and Brittanian History, not things like war and logistics.
As Schneizel approached Lelouch, he waved all these Gamer powers out of his head. Or he would've, if not seeing the box now floating over his head.
[Prince Schneizel of Brittania LV 27 - Commander of all of Brittania's Military]
"I am saddened by your loss dear brother. Our loss."
Lelouch crossed his arms. "And the scum that killed her. That killed my mother. Where are they?"
"We are doing everything we can. We've already been trying," said Schneizel.
"And with everything that's happened. You're still sending me to Ashford?"
Schneizel frowned. "Yes."
Lelouch would've been disgusted. But instead, he relented. "Fine."
"Arrangements for her funeral will proceed tomorrow. Afterward, we'll have your things packed and sent away to the Academy. I'm." Lelouch was surprised, it was the first time he ever saw Schneizel saddened by anything. "So sorry."
"Don't be." Lelouch did something he did very rarely with Schneizel. "It's fine Schneizel. You did your best to protect her."
After Schneizel walked away, Lelouch thought calmly.
'I can deal with this revenge business after I've been settled at Ashford Academy.'
~000~
In the front row of other Brittanian Recruits, Suzaku watched Marriane's corpse being carried in an ornate coffin. Every important member of the Brittanian Nobility and Military was present.
Like any good soldier, Suzaku gave a salute simultaneously with every other trooper there when her corpse passed.
Her tiara shaking, Nunally cried into Euphemia's chest, rubbing her eyes onto her pink dress.
Suzaku thought quietly seeing Marriane's coffin rest above her grave. He knew how well Marriane's corpse had been cleaned of any blood and made as presentable as possible for the funeral.
'The Queen didn't deserve this. However much I hate Brittania and wish to see the Empire fall to its knees. It was sloppy. The next time they strike, I need to be helping. No more messes. No more failure.'
Lelouch was beside himself with anger seeing his mother's coffin. But Gamer's Mind held his rage at bay.
'I don't care what it takes. Even if it takes my own life. My mother will have her justice.'
Schneizel placed his hand upon Marriane's grave speaking to all in the funeral. "Lady Marriane's death was a tragedy. She gave her life attacked by those who were all enemies of Brittania. She was a noble warrior, the best Knightmare pilot. Kind, brave, honorable. And the true embodiment of kindness."
Schneizel withdrew a rose from his jacket pocket, placing it upon her coffin looking at her closed eyes. "May she rest forever in peace. And her assassins burn for what they did to her."
One by one, everyone at the funeral laid a rose upon Marriane's coffin. When it was Lelouch's turn, he ground his teeth slightly.
The crashing of the limousine and the gun and mortar fire that followed.
It all mixed into a vat of rage and grief that made Lelouch feel more enraged than ever before. But at the same time more focused.
'I can't let this happen to Euphemia or Nuna. My family will never be tainted by assassination like this again.'
As Lelouch watched Marriane's corpse lowered into her grave, he balled his fists.
'I'll kill them myself!'
~000~
Lelouch stepped into the armored limousine seeing two young women and a Brittanian Military Official he recognized a bit. The girls he knew, both were Knights of the Round, already wearing Ashford Academy uniforms like he was.
Due to the recent attempt on his life, the number of Knightmares and soldiers on motorbikes around him knew he was safe. But Lelouch still wished the same courtesy was extended the day prior.
"My name is Commander Villeta Nu, I serve under General Gottwald. These two girls will be escorting you at all times as your personal bodyguards. They will be armed, even during school activities. I believe you already know Sixth Knight Anya, this is Twelfth Knight Monica Krushevsky."
The blonde Knight bowed her head. "We are all saddened by the loss of your mother Prince Lelouch."
"Yes," Lelouch said looking out the window as the limousine began after Ashford Academy. "Do you know how many times I've heard that today? The whole country is weeping for her. But the people responsible are still out there."
Anya said nothing while Monica gasped. "I didn't mean to. Um."
"It's fine," said Lelouch. "But why are you with us, Commander Nu?"
"I'm in charge of your security detail. The Ashfords were more than happy to accommodate us."
"When I'm marrying their daughter, any price is worth it to them I'm sure." Lelouch rolled his eyes.
Monica was surprised. "You don't wish to marry her?"
"Of course I don't. My own mother was murdered and the day of her funeral I'm shipped off. I know Schneizel and father don't care one bit about me, but this is a new low."
"But you're the Crown Prince," said Monica. "Can you just refuse?"
"If only I could," Lelouch said.
Villeta went on. "The strongest perimeter possible has been set around the entire Academy. The school is a fortress, no one or anything can get past us without us knowing about it."
"Where was this same enthusiasm when my mother, the Queen, was killed by rebels?" asked Lelouch.
Villeta frowned. "Schneizel did all he could."
"Hm," Lelouch said simply.
~000~
Ashford Academy was as lavish as he was expecting, but being the next in line to the Brittanian throne his entire life, Lelouch was not impressed at all.
Not far from where Lelouch was arriving, Rivalz Cardemonde and the rest of the student council had convened.
"Wait." a girl named Shirley Fennette said. "His mother dies and they send him here to get married the day of the funeral."
Rivalz shrugged. "I mean it is tragic, but marrying the council president isn't-" Rivalz grunted quietly in pain when Shirley elbowed him in the stomach.
Before their blonde president could say anything, an announcement came over the intercom. "All students report to the front grounds in single file lines."
"He must be here already." Rivalz kept joking. "Better get ready Milly, you're about to meet your new husband!"
"Can you take this a bit more seriously?" Shirley snapped her notebook shut. "The prince of the entire country is now a student here. Show some respect."
"Well he's not in this room is he?"
Outside, the entire school stood in rows as Lelouch arrived. When the motorcade stopped, a soldier opened the door to the limousine before speaking into his earpiece. "All units, the Prince is mobile. All units the Prince is mobile."
"Perimeter's been set since last night Bravo 2, copy."
Stepping out of his limousine, Lelouch watched as rows and rows of students and faculty bowed their heads.
Only Kallen was hiding how disgusted she was when Lelouch approached.
'We fail to kill him and his mother pays the price. What a shame.'
"It's an honor to meet you." The student council president curtsied as Lelouch approached. "My prince, I am Milly Ashford, and welcome to Ashford Academy. I hope it wasn't too much trouble to come here after the funeral."
"Not at all. These two young women are attending the school with me." Lelouch said, introducing them. "Anya and Monica."
"Um. I suppose we can show you around the grounds. I run the Student Council. Please, follow along."
As Rivalz chattered mindlessly with Lelouch, Kallen followed the rest of the Student Council as Lelouch was walked around the campus, thinking quickly.
'Those aren't just two random girls. They're the best knights in the country. They're not carrying lip gloss, make-up, and just school things in those bags. They're probably carrying pistols.'
~000~
"Shirley," Milly said. "Why don't you show us around the pool?"
Shirley looked around the place where she attended her swimming club. "Um, well it's pretty self-explanatory. The bathrooms are over there, the high jump is up there, we use it for diving mostly. And the lap pool is meant for both timed competitions and regular swimming for clubs and the like."
Lelouch hid how bored he was. "You have a lovely campus here."
Rivalz laughed. "Yeah, you sound excited about it."
Shirley elbowed him again. "He's our Prince! For the last time, show some respect Rivalz."
"It's fine," Lelouch said respectfully. "I'm one of you now."
Ignoring Rivalz's words, Lelouch looked at the box floating over Kallen's head, since it was the only one not labeled 'Student' out of all the ones he'd seen so far.
[Kallen Kozuki LV 32 - Terrorist]
'That was easy.'
As the student council showed Lelouch the campus, all he could think about was how to plan his next move.
'This Kallen Kozuki must be one of the rebels who attacked me just yesterday. She might act all aloof here, but the Gamer hasn't lied to me yet. The question is, how to find her group.'
His thoughts ran.
'Lloyd Asplund and the group who engineered the Lancelot program have made Knightmare Technology history. If the Gamer is in fact as powerful as it claims, I have to get my hands on its schematics, learn how to make my own Knightmare, and then pilot it.'
'I can spend as many points as possible on Intelligence for now. At 40 INT, or even higher, I should learn four times as fast as the average person. Any higher than that I could probably learn how to create my own Knightmare in a number of weeks. I'd need to have a good understanding of electronics, software, how Luminous cores work, as well as loads of Electrical and Armored engineering. People spend years learning how to create a Knightmare, and I'll do it in far less.'
'Schneizel and Father would never allow me to throw myself into combat. The failed attempt on my life has probably scared them to pieces that they can't use me for their own ways when I ascend the throne if I'm no longer alive. So I have to engineer this entire program in complete secret. All I have to do is give Lord Lloyd a visit, steal his schematics, and start from there.'
~000~
In his new dorm, Lelouch overlooked the grounds from his bedroom window.
Hearing a knock on the door, Lelouch spoke. "Come in."
Monica entered. "My prince? How are you doing, have you settled in alright?"
"I'm fine," Lelouch said. "Close the door, I have something important to discuss with you."
"Alright," said Monica.
"Kallen Stadfeld is an impostor. Her real name is Kallen Kozuki, she's an Eleven. She's part of the organized terrorists who tried to kill me yesterday."
"What? What evidence do you have?"
Lelouch sighed. "At the moment. None. But I want her to be followed everywhere she goes, especially whenever she leaves campus."
"Alright well, Villeta is bound to have questions."
"She will." agreed Lelouch. "But I'm going to visit the director of the Lancelot program that Suzaku has been recruited for when classes are finished today. When we're there, I need you to copy all schematics for the entire project onto a new hard drive."
Monica's eyes widened. "But that's treason isn't it?"
"Not if I gave you the order. If Father wants to put a crown on my head then I have every right to use it accordingly." Lelouch said.
Monica still was confused. "If you ask for them, I'm sure he could just give them to you."
"I can't have Schneizel or anyone else finding out." seeing Monica was still confused, Lelouch just asked her something directly. "Can you do this all for me?"
Monica bowed her head instantly. "Yes, my prince."
Dismissing her with a nod, Lelouch thought to himself carefully.
'Milly Ashford finishes her classes at 4. I should speak to her. As disinterested in marriage as I am right now, I need to keep up the appearance that I do care.'
As Lelouch walked through the halls with Anya following carefully behind him, students bowed their heads as Lelouch passed them.
"My prince."
"Your highness."
Lelouch just gave them forced smiles.
'I can't wait until I leave this place.'
Lelouch opened the door to the Student Council Chambers and took a seat around the table there.
Anya said nothing, standing in front of the door with her pistol securely hidden in one of her jacket pockets.
Not bothering to ask where Monica was, Lelouch quickly began strategizing again.
'The schematics I can steal from Lloyd Asplund can be helpful. But without knowing how to engineer them into a working Knightmare they're useless. This school won't teach me anything I need, engineering is not any of my classes. And even if it was, it'd be so low level it would be pointless. If I can get my INT high enough, I can probably learn things so quickly that it would take a week at most.'
To test this out, Lelouch picked a random book off a nearby shelf and began reading.
Despite how boring the topic was, about fifteen minutes of reading later and Lelouch got what he was looking for.
[You have gained +1 INT!]
'Fifteen minutes to increase my intelligence about a tenth of that of the average person. About an hour and a half and I should have increased my INT by 10. Time to get to work.'
Even though Lelouch had no interest at all in his classes, he still prepared to go to his first class.
'From one to two-thirty I have Classical History. The textbook should serve me properly.'
~000~
Milly smiled and waved as Lelouch entered the classroom with Anya and Monica flanking him.
"Would you like to sit next to me?" wondered Milly as Lelouch approached her seat in the back of the class.
"Absolutely." lied Lelouch.
While Monica and Anya quietly took the seats behind them, Lelouch opened his history textbook. When Milly was distracted by the small mirror in her makeup kit she brought with her, Lelouch took the opportunity to open his [Menu] and put five points into INT.
Now with INT at 20, Lelouch began breezing through his textbook. After a few minutes, he got another point awarded to him into INT.
Looking at his intended, Lelouch quickly was unimpressed by Milly.
'This girl is supposed to be my wife? Some dumb rich blonde girl who looks like she has the emptiest head imaginable. Yeah, thanks Father, thanks Schneizel.'
Lelouch heard his thoughts change a bit.
'Not everyone has a magical power to make them twice as smart as they are in a single day. Be fair and give her a chance.'
Still, Lelouch stayed in the back of the class reading his textbook while trying to get as many INT points as possible. Normally the teacher wouldn't have liked this one bit and called on him, but gave him a pass as he was the Prince.
By the end of the class, Lelouch was surprised when he was handed the same history assignment every other student was only to be greeted with a Quest notification.

'Why not? Don't see why I shouldn't accept.'
As Lelouch walked out of the classroom, Milly approached him. "Want to get some lunch together? Think we should get to know each other you know?"
"Um. Lunch? Already? Sorry I didn't look at the schedule really." said Lelouch.
"Yeah, it is one-thirty. Aren't you hungry?"
Lelouch spoke honestly. "Yes actually."
~000~
"Here." Monica handed Lelouch a sandwich.
"Shouldn't I get my own food?"
"We can't risk it being poisoned. Commander Nu makes will sure all of your meals are held under lock and key at all times."
Sighing, Lelouch began unwrapping it. "Fine."
Milly ate her own food quietly watching Monica and Anya eat their own lunch well within eyesight of Lelouch. "So they're your bodyguards then?"
"Essentially. Why?"
"They just seem trustworthy, that's all."
Lelouch raised an eyebrow. "They're the best pilots in the world and have served my father for years. Trustworthy is a required trait."
"You don't seem sad. I mean, considering what happened."
Liking how Milly didn't instantly say how sorry she was for him, Lelouch spoke. "It was tragic yes. But I'm just confused as to why Schneizel insisted on sending me here the same day as the funeral."
"Your brother made this match?"
"I sure didn't. I wish I could choose for myself who to marry and who not to."
Milly finished her salad. "But who would you marry then?"
"I have bigger concerns honestly," Lelouch admitted. "Eleven resistance is at an all-time high. And my mother has been killed as a result."
"Do I then seem like such a bad wife?"
"I don't even know you. But besides that, you're right. We've only just met." said Lelouch.
"Even if you must seem tired of hearing it. Your mother was indeed a noble woman. In practice, not in name but that's what matters to me. People, my parents especially, always slandered her for being a commoner." Milly shrugged. "But she was strong."
"Yes, strong," Lelouch said chewing his sandwich. "And we couldn't do anything about it. I couldn't do anything. The whole thing frustrates me to no end."
Milly smiled a little. "I wasn't there when you were crowned yesterday. But your father made a good choice. I saw on television the way he spoke about you. I think you'll make a good King."
Sighing, Lelouch shook his head. "You're all polite enough to not mention anything about yourselves. Except for Rivalz I suppose. How long have you been president of the student council?"
"A year. Rivalz nominated Nina but she stepped down when I decided to run."
"Nina? They girl shyer than Kallen?"
Milly put her lunch away in her bag. "She's not shy. She's just, spacey I guess."
"Um, Milly," Lelouch said. "This might seem like an odd thing to say. But if you don't agree to this match, I can call it off. We only met today after all."
"Let's see how it goes. It's not every day you get to meet the Crown Prince. Let alone be arranged to marry him."
Lelouch sighed. "You know I still feel strange whenever someone calls me that. I've never done anything to earn it other than being born."
"Well, what do you feel you have to do to earn it?"
Lelouch spoke honestly. "I don't know yet."
Knowing how tough the question was, Milly changed the subject. "And Ashford Academy? How are you liking it?"
"Everyone's nice. But I guess they have to be as long as I got this stupid thing on." Lelouch pointed to the small and flat coronet lining the top of his head.
"So you want people to speak honestly with you? Even if you're the Prince?"
Lelouch nodded. "That's all I've ever wanted since I was told I would be."
"Then let me say this." Milly smiled. "I don't know if we'll be married someday. Both our parents agreed to it already, but like you said we still have to figure it out. But if we will be married, I promise I'll always speak honestly. Regardless if you're the King."
This actually made Lelouch feel a rare moment of genuine happiness amidst the sea of grief he felt over his mother's murder.
"Thank you Milly. That's the best thing I've heard all day."
"Shall we get to class? We can sit next to each other again."
Lelouch nodded. "Alright."
~000~
"Kallen Stadfeld is an Eleven liberationist?" Villeta stopped clasping her hands together in the secret security room installed shortly before Lelouch's arrival in the Academy.
Monica shrugged. "Prince Lelouch suspected her. Although he didn't give me a reason."
Villeta didn't buy this at all. "What else did he tell you? Be specific Monica. Your life is sworn to defend the Holy Brittanian Empire."
"What do you mean? I thought I was trusted to protect Lelouch. I would never betray my oath."
Villeta nodded. "You are. But as a Knight of the Round, you must obey my orders as well."
Monica lied. "That's all he said."
Villeta sat back down. "So Lelouch suspected Stadfeld of treason worthy enough of execution. And that's it."
"He didn't say anything else about her. Why he suspected her at all." Monica now spoke truthfully. "He didn't give me a motive or any probable cause. He just said he thought she was Kallen Kozuki, a terrorist, instead."
"See I've run background checks on every single student and teacher in the entire school. I had to after the attempt on Prince Lelouch's life," said Villeta. "Kallen Stadfeld is a proper Brittanian citizen."
"Prince Lelouch thinks otherwise. I'm sorry if he wasn't more specific." Monica said.
"That'll be all." Villeta dismissed her with a wave of her hand.
After Monica left the room, Villeta tapped a pen on the edge of the table.
'Kallen Stadfeld. A terrorist. Why? And how? Her grades aren't anything stellar but her attendance is fine. She only misses school a few times a semester.'
Looking into it more, Villeta withdrew a binder with every single student listed.
Flipping through it, Villeta searched for Kallen's name. Upon reaching her name, Villeta looked for the days she was absent from Ashford.
'Wednesday the ninth. Yesterday. Did she help assassinate the Queen? That can't be a coincidence right?'
Villeta spoke into the microphone in her sleeve. "Put out a tail on Kallen Stadfeld. I want all guards to keep an eye out for her. I want to know the moment she leaves the school grounds."
"Sir yes sir!" the trooper on the other line said.
