Randy didn't bother greeting anyone else before finishing his home cooked meal his sister saved for him. She was the only one that joined him at the table as they chatted about his drive up and the mundane tasks he was busy with on the oil rig he was now working on for the past year. "Dang, girl! This is the best eats I've had in forever! Give me the cooks number so I can thank him proper." He winked at his sister cockily as she kicked his leg.
"Yer welcome, ya ass." Sandy laughed as she stood up and took his plate from him.
"I can clean up myself ya twit!" He called out as he stood up after her.
"Yer my guest, silly." She shot back as she rinsed his dish in the sink before placing it in the dishwasher. "Come on. People are starting to think you're the hermit in the family." Sandy led her brother in the living room as they both smiled.
Randy's smile started to leave his face as he noticed the company before him, he was presented with. He knew full well it would come down to this, but he had prayed it'd take longer and be far shorter lived than reality now seemed to present to him. He, and Sandy's, parents were seated on a couch to the left of the fire place and Static's father, and a new young woman, was seated on the couch to the right. Static's sister could be seen out on the back porch smoking, likely not a cigarette, as Static himself jumped up and shook Randy's hand.
"Great to see you again!" Static brightly stated, as Randy was to be his best man, despite they weren't that close. "How was your drive?" Static asked, likely out of politeness as he walked over to Sandy and wrapped his arms around her while he gave her a deep kiss. The two young children, a year and a half, ran up to hug their parent's legs despite the fact that Static wasn't their true father.
"They are so big!" Randy kneeled down and reached his arms out seeing full well how unsure the children were at first, but it didn't take long before they left their parents heels and darted into his arms causing them both to laugh as he fell back on purpose letting them tackle him. "You win! You win!" He laughed out as the kids, that barely remembered him, crawled on top of him in amusement.
"You're a natural!" Static laughed as he watched the children bond with their uncle, they hadn't seen in over a year.
"Likely, cause I've been told I'm so immature!" Randy laughed as the toddler boy and girl continued to try to wrestles him. "No doubt these little grubs, being born from my sister, could easily beat me in a spelling test even in their young year." Randy grinned at Static as he came to pick up the you boy from continuing to kick into Randy's bladder.
"I guess we are in the same boat then." Static smirked as he watched Sandy pick up Tex, their young girl, from crawling on Randy like a play structure.
"So great to see ya, Randy." Sandy smiled at her brother again as her emotions started to flow over causing Static to move over and wrap a free arm around her.
This made Randy feel great... that was until he looked to see his parents unamused and his ex-lover looking away trying to forget he existed. "They don't matter." He reminded himself in his head. "I'm here for Sandy, and da kids. Fuck anyone else... even Static if it comes down to it." He reminded himself non-verbally.
"It's nice ta see y'all again too." Randy stated less enthusiastically as he sat up while still sitting on the floor.
"We got the guest room made up for ya in the basement!" Sandy smiled down at him, likely because of the late hour.
"Oh no!" Randy let out an awkward laugh. "I'll get a room at a hotel and head back in the morning ta help set things up for da wedding. I just wanted ta greet ya all once I finally made it in town."
"There is more than enough room at my house." Proton cut in causing Randy's body to go stiff and him to struggle for his breath.
The two men hadn't spoken for 9 months. Not since it became known Proton's wife, Val, had cancer that she quickly was subdued by. The two men had been lovers for a few months after Proton met with a brush with death. Randy now saw he was Protons mid life crisis, and once his family needed him the older man had no problem pushing the young man away and blame him for all is ill willed wants and needs. Randy didn't put up a fight and let Proton condemn him and beat him for taking time away from his dying wife, and thus Randy ran away. Very far away. He missed his sister giving birth to her children and even being there for her during her divorce... but he could barely keep himself alive alone, so he knew he needed time before coming back and being able to look at his parents, or ex, in the face again. He was still alive, and he knew they all hated him for that. He wished no ill will on any of them but just wanted to stay away as he knew the negative energy would cause him to spiral out of control... He couldn't give up as it would hurt Sandy. As always... she was the only thing keeping him around over all.
"I ain't looking ta put any of y'all out. I'll just pay fer a room." Randy coughed as he held out his arms as the two children that were just put down ran back towards him.
"I insist." Proton's voice stressed causing Randy to want to tense up, but he was able to hold off due to his niece and nephew being in his arms again.
"No thank ya, sir." Randy lightly breathed as he kept playing with his sister's kid's as they started to get noticeably tired. Randy recalled how much Proton hated him calling him sir, but didn't think of it when it came out of his mouth. At this time, he just saw him as an older man, like his father, that hated him and he had to keep his temper at bay while in front of Sandy. "The Midnight Light a few miles east of here will suite me fine. Y'all have a good night!" Randy stood up and handed his sisters children back to her and her fiancée. "Night!" He called out as he left quickly before anyone could protest more.
The motel Randy had brought up was a good 37 miles away from his sister's house. It was a shit hole, but he didn't mind so much as he found himself not worth more than these slums, he always found himself in. Also, being alone was worth so much more than anyone around him could know. His solo state used to cause his demons to take over, but now, as he'd gotten older, he found most of the time he was able to fight them off to a point at least.
Randy was into his 4th beer of his 12 pack when a knock on the door caused him to look up surprised. "Fuck." He muttered under his breath as he was only in his boxers, but not giving a damn to dress up for whoever was in the mood to piss at him for nothing. He'd spend enough time in such dwellings that he was use to getting called out for someone else's bull shit. He wasn't in the mood. He only came here for his sister's wedding and had felt enough hate from onlookers that if this POS at the door really wanted to throw arms, Randy likely saw himself going to jail again.
"What?!" Randy yelled angry in an effort to scare whatever asshole dared to upset him at the moment away. Randy took at step back and calmed himself after seeing who it was. "Oh... it's you." Randy had resisted slamming the door shut in the mans face and just left it open as he walked away. "Why are ya here?"
