An Hour Later
Buffy's POV
"I am SO kicking both Faith and the Mayor's asses for this next chance I get." She said even as she continued to take in the new stretch of hallway.
Not long after the light show had stopped the room had exploded into questions and ideas but not surprisingly it'd been Giles who'd brought that to an end and restored order. However HOW he did it had raised a few eyebrows: he put two fingers into his mouth and whistled loudly. From there he'd rather candidly pointed out that before they could decide what they'd be doing next they had to first find out what they had to work with. He then told them to break into teams of two or three and begin exploring the building that was evidently supposed to be their base of operations. Once they had an accurate list on the table they could then move on to learning more about the outside world they were now in.
They might be in a different dimension but that didn't change what the Scoobies had learned early on: having the right tools and the right information kept you alive.
"You'd have to find her first." Willow said with a somewhat detached tone of voice, "If Faith's really here she's not going to show herself until she's in a position of power and I doubt Wilkins is going to just pop up in front of us for you to punch."
"Who says I'll punch him?" She asked as though that was a false assumption, "There's also shooting him or blowing him up. I'm game for either."
Indeed if there was one thing that she'd seen quite a bit of so far it was weapons and most of them were not the kind she'd trained in the use of since being Called. Guns and bombs of all sorts had been found so far some of which had felt familiar for some inexplicable reason while others felt as new things should. Whatever they felt she and Willow had used notepads and pens to jot down what they'd found as well as the location of the resources. Already they were on the third page of their notepads making her wonder if they'd really be here long enough to use it all.
"True. But kicking Faith's butt's gonna have to wait until we're back home." Willow said before writing something down on her notepad, "Remember Janus said all of us are going to need to be gassed up to open the portal out of here."
"I know that. I'm not stupid." She said before coming to a stop in front of a door.
She was about to write down the label on the door before going in to find out what was inside when the level caused her to freeze.
'Commander Elizabeth 'Buffy' Versio'
The rank and the last name should've been alien to her but instead a force within her felt as though she deserved them but also that they belonged to her. She rebelled at this idea knowing the truth and her first inclination was to just mark the location before turning away to find something else to take stock of. However even as she willed her body to move away she found she could not because an annoying part of her wanted to know more about the changes that had been done to her. Ignorance got you dead on the Hellmouth and in a new reality or whatever it'd probably get her twice as dead since the rules here would be pretty different.
With a growl of frustration she reached out and turned the doorknob and pushed the door in to reveal what lay beyond.
Well it loses points for several decoration faux pas mistakes. She thought looking about the room, Definitely someone who's been trained to travel light and has almost no life outside her career.
Functional.
Utilitarian.
A soldier's quarters where the possibility of being reassigned every other year had to be kept in mind when choosing what to take with you.
Definitely going to have to see about a few field trips into the nearest town or something. She thought walking deeper into, Some posters, some better sheets and DEFINITELY an off duty wardrobe 'cause no way am I wearing these sort of clothes twenty-four seven.
On the walls of the room there were an assortment certificates and photographs all looking quite official to her eye but she could tell that Janus had only done a half-assed job with them. How? Because the names of the places were so wordy and geeky that there was no way that a real business or government would use them. At worst they'd restrict it to some sort of alphabet combo name to make it look more impressive. Still each one had an impressive skillset attached to the same name that was on the door.
As for photographs the locations and the clothes were new but most of the faces she could recognize as identical to her own life. Mom, Dawn, Xander, Willow, Oz and the others were all there with some taking friendlier poses than others. Mom and Giles looked more the part of respectable or proud instructors whereas her friends remained that as far as this new past was concerned.
Then came the faces she'd swear she'd never seen before but caused pulses of regret, guilt and loss to spasm within her heart. They weren't overpowering or anything but it disturbed her that she'd feel such things at all for people who as far as she knew were complete strangers. An old man in a black and white uniform with a grey cap that had an air of authority about him but with the tips of a proud grin at the corner of his mouth. A young man with a tall face, black hair and a smile that made her heart feel a little bit warmer even as she thought that he belonged behind the scenes rather than on the frontline.
The last one though was what caused her to turn away from the photographs and it was of a little girl, no more than four or five years old, with a big smile on her face. She had a toy gun in her hand but was not holding it in the proper manner at all. However she didn't feel anything within her that made her think the odd source of all this cared. Instead the only sense she got was of happiness, joy, pride and the thing that scared her the most: maternal love.
This is ridiculous! I'm too young to even think about having a kid never mind already have a five year old one! She thought kneeling before a chest at the foot of her bed, Janus definitely laid it on thick when coming up with this backstory. Why'd he even bother?
It was like the deity wanted their fake identities in this new reality to be airtight in case someone ever made it into the base and had the time to look for it. If big changes were necessary to gas up the portal that'd get them home she doubted that they'd be here for more than a year if that. Whether it was ensuring that missions by the Cobra group didn't go like they were supposed to or just eliminating high value members of the organization. After all if she eliminated one of the big players then everything they would've done in the future wouldn't happen and that'd be one helluva big change.
Upon opening the chest she found only a handful of clothes with the rest of the space looking like it was a variety of maintenance kits, a spare pistol and a small box with a folded piece of paper taped to it. It had an exclamation point on it and that was enough to make her want to learn more so she picked up the box and unfolded the piece of paper.
'Destroy only when push comes to shove. There's no going back afterwards'
"Right then. YOU are staying right here." She said quickly putting the box back into the chest before shutting the lid closed.
She wondered what sort of moments fit the description of 'push come to shove' but she wasn't about to let that happen at all. When a deity thought ahead to put a warning label like that on a box it meant that whatever was inside was dangerous. Like 'Xander with one of his harebrained ideas' dangerous that was just crazy enough that it stood a chance of working. She didn't want any part of that until things really got dicy.
Like one or more of them getting caught by Cobra and they needed to use everything they had if they were going to pull off a rescue.
They were NOT going to let that happen as long as they had the strength to prevent it.
They were going to fight smart, fight hard and fight to win!
She wasn't going to settle for anything less than that.
Joyce Summers' POV
Unstable.
That one word pretty much summed up both the situation as well as what she was feeling at the moment but she suspected that she wasn't the only one.
It hadn't even been a year since she'd had the truth of Buffy's life as the Slayer and she'd done her best to adjust. It hadn't been easy to say the least especially since she refused to take the easy route of just keeping her head down and trusting in Mister Giles to protect her daughter. Fortunately Mister Giles respected this and as such did what he could to keep her in the loop especially when Buffy deliberately tried to keep things from her. Her daughter was a stubborn one and she could tell that her eldest wanted desperately to keep what small shards of normalcy she could in the face of being the Slayer. She understood this however that did not mean that she would allow herself to be shielded from the truth any longer.
Being shielded from the truth had blinded her to the horrors that her daughter had been forced to cope with in Los Angeles. Being shielded from the truth caused her to give into Hank's proposal of sending her to a psychiatric hospital for treatment like she was mentally disturbed. Being shielded from the truth had caused her to erroneously punish her daughter and had put her two daughters in harm's way far too often.
From this point further she would not allow the truth to be kept from her because only when in possession of the truth could anyone make the right decisions.
At the moment the truth that she was attempting to acquire was to take stock of what looked to be the vehicle garage for the 'team'. Arrayed out before her were a variety of vehicles that looked like they would fit just about any scenario with multiple versions of some of the vehicles being present. The main differences between the versions seemed to be the weapons attached to them or the kind of protective armour they had. She could understand the multiple copies of the smaller vehicles since there'd only be riding space for one or two people but she couldn't quite figure out why there were different versions on the larger ones. Surely it'd be more efficient to simply have one and position around it the equipment necessary to change the weapons or armour attached to it.
Oh well. At least we'll have plenty of spare parts or replacements. She thought moving towards the nearest vehicle.
She was pleased to find that sitting on a small table near the vehicle was a clipboard that upon picking up she realized was a maintenance checklist for the vehicle. A quick check showed that there were many pages on the clipboard implying that either the vehicle needed to be maintained daily or Janus believed that they'd be in this reality for awhile.
Neither was a favourable possibility in her mind.
Regardless of the circumstances she didn't want her family and their friends to remain in this reality any longer than absolutely necessary. Fighting demons and vampires in Sunnydale might've made Buffy and her friends a little more knowledgeable about war than most teenagers but there was a big difference between fighting monsters with claws and men with guns. For one thing the men with guns were far greater in number and destructive capability than demons from what she'd been told by Mister Giles. Sure some could use magic but most stuck to claws, fangs, brute strength and weapons stuck in the fifteenth century. Compared to modern weaponry it'd be a massacre for the demons if they ever went up against a dedicated force of Green Berets or Navy Seals. Giles would probably point out how bullets wouldn't mean much to a vampire and to a degree he'd be right.
What the Brit forgot though was that a vampire was essentially a corpse being puppeteered by a demonic spirit. Even if bullets couldn't do anything against the spirit in the corpse put enough holes in its ride or destroy it outright and the problem was still solved. Add explosives into the mix and the vampires would die just as quickly as a human would.
Bottom line fighting humans with state of the art weaponry and the skill to affect things on a global level was VERY different from fighting demons and vampires who mostly stuck to the old ways.
Hmmm…V-22 Osprey. American multi-mission, tilt rotor military aircraft capable of VTOL and STOL. She thought reading the summary that was included on the top of the first page, Operational range eleven hundred nautical miles and has a top speed five hundred and sixty-five kilometres per hour. Armaments can include the M240 or M2 machine guns as well as a GAU-19 three barrelled Gatling gun. Missiles also possible such as the AGM-114 Hellfire and the AGM-176 Griffin.
Not a bad choice if they were dealing with something close by but not anything further off without a reliable means of refuelling it along the way.
Moving onto the next one she could see several similar design elements to the Osprey but the vehicle was definitely a century or more ahead in terms of technology and design.
D77-TC Pelican. Primary use: medium-lift operations of personnel, vehicles and equipment. Secondary use: support gunship. She thought reading off the vehicle's clipboard, Armaments include a chin mounted auto-cannon, two ANVIL-II ASM pods containing eight missiles each and one AIE-486H heavy machine gun. Can carry up to fifteen people. Three man crew recommended. Motion trackers and capable of limited spaceflight.
Definitely sounded like something that'd have enough range to get them just about anywhere on the planet without too much trouble. There was a minimum speed necessary in order to leave Earth's atmosphere so the engines on the Pelican would need to be capable of propelling itself at that speed in order to enter space. Since she didn't foresee any trips to the final frontier in their future that speed would mean that almost any location on the planet would be within reach for them. Add to that the ability to carry vehicles and equipment they'd be more prepared for whatever mission they went on.
Deciding to skip the rest of the small fry and move onto the biggest vehicle in the room she walked over to where the large transport plane that looked ready to taxi into position and begin takeoff procedures. This without a doubt was what they'd be using when they needed to take a lot of cargo or some of the smaller vehicles or maybe bring something back.
Custom transport aircraft codenamed 'Nomad'. Primary purpose: mobile command centre. She thought after picking up the clipboard in front of the vehicle, Based on the design of the American C-17 Globemaster III. Possesses four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 turbofan engines, three crew requirement for operation, range of about twenty-nine hundred nautical miles and a cruising speed of five hundred knots. Hmmm…no armaments. That could be a problem.
Transport aircraft might just be intended to ferry people and cargo to wherever they needed to go but considering how most cartoons with armies tended to go they'd need something more. Armour of some sort would definitely be needed even if it reduced their speed and all related stats since the odds were high that they'd be shot at at some point. Also since she was pretty sure that none of her 'teammates' would like being shot at without being about to shoot back some weapons would need to be installed.
Maybe something along the lines of the Douglas AC-47 Spooky. She thought remembering her father's stories of 'Puff the Magic Dragon' saving his ass more than once.
An hour went by before she finished looking over each vehicle in the room and she had to say that as long as Buffy was never allowed behind the steering wheel they'd be quite well equipped transportation-wise for a fight no matter who their enemy was.
At least until they needed to resupply that is.
Call her crazy but she didn't think that whatever magic was used to restore the place also came with an automatic supply refill function. No she was pretty sure that once all the food, medicine, parts and ammunition were used up they'd have to either pick a side or make like the Vikings and raid locations that had what they needed.
Should they choose sides from the beginning?
Hopefully Xander'll tell us a bit more about this place later. She thought deciding to shelve the big decisions for when she knew more.
Still if there was one positive thing she could take away from this it was the fact that she felt like she was in the best shape of her entire life. It was like she was one of those professional athletes whose body was only just getting to the point where they needed to consider retirement. She made a mental note that when they got back to Sunnydale she'd get a membership at the local gym and see if she could get back to this state in her normal body.
If nothing else it'd make dealing with the weirdness of Buffy's life easier.
The C&C Room
The Next Day, Morning
Xander's POV
"Okay so we're all agreed that this place is pretty well stocked and equipped?" He asked looking at the assembled group of friends.
It'd taken most of the previous day to look over the entire facility and since everyone had been bone tired Giles had put forth the motion that they sleep on the new info before having a meeting. No one had disagreed so he'd gone to his quarters and after a brief moment seeing if he could disassemble and reassemble the handgun that'd been in the holster of the outfit he'd first woken up in he'd hit the hay. Seeing as how Janus was behind their relocation and transformations he felt it was a safe bet that it was a variation on the Halloween when Ethan Rayne came to town. As such he'd bet good money that each of the gang had an assortment of memories in their heads derived from the owners of their new combat clothes. After the infamous Halloween, when he'd realized that there were some leftovers knocking around his noggin, he'd made an effort to meld with the fragments before they could fade away completely.
They hadn't been a picnic to deal with but they'd also represented the best chance he had to get stronger so he could help the Scoobies protect Sunnydale.
It'd taken him throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the problem along with some meditation techniques he'd managed to get Giles to show him but it'd been worth it in the end. He'd been able to retain enough info to get past the guard with Cordy and acquire the rocket launcher without Uncle Sam being the wiser and he got better at dealing with monsters. Not enough to tell Buffy to take the night off or anything but enough that he could usually get one or two hits in instead of just being a distraction centred punching bag for the demon of the week.
It'd been a test, disassembling then reassembling the gun, to see if the baggage this time around was easier to access or if they'd all need to do some intensive meditation.
By the end of the first hour he could safely say that while there might be more info sticking around than last time his ability to put it to use was subpar to say the least. He'd managed to disassemble and reassemble the handgun but he didn't need to be a military drill instructor to know that it hadn't been in the preferred length of time for tests like this one. After stopping he'd thought the entire hour over and determined that the info was definitely accessible but this time the change didn't come with the muscle memory or feelings of deja vu. This disappointed him since it meant that before they could do anything in this world they'd need to do some training in order for their new skills to become a part of them.
Unless they all decided to use the 'push come to shove' boxes he suspected each member of the team received but he didn't think that they were that desperate just yet.
"Yeah I'd say we've got just about everything we need to throw a monkey wrench into things." Giles replied with only a light British accent promptly grimacing after the statement, "Bloody well wish I could do something about my manner of speech. I sound like an American."
"Speaking as an American it's not that bad." He said enjoying the Brit's discomfort caused by the new baggage on the brain, "Besides it's not exactly a priority problem at the moment G-man. If we've finished taking stock of things we should probably get down to business making plans for getting enough gas in the tank to go home. Since me and Dawn know the most we'll let you all in on what sort of world we got dumped in.
"G.I. Joe was a cartoon that was pretty popular in the eighties and took place then so expect the world to have the same fashion sense and tech level." He said spotting the grimaces on the faces of Buffy, Willow and Dawn, "The entire show centred around the battles between a terrorist organization called Cobra and an American special missions force called G.I Joe. Cobra started out in a town called Springfield that'd fallen on hard times and was home to quite a few people with an axe to grind with the government. It probably wouldn't have amounted to much if a hateful man hadn't come and begun to organize the pissed off people but once he got started they started gathering funds for what they wanted to do."
"So they had a bunch of bake sales and flea markets?" Buffy asked not sounding worried about the bad guys.
"Nope. They cranked out one pyramid scheme after another starting local before spreading them out all over the USA." He replied remembering that part of the G.I. Joe lore from the comics, "With every place they pulled their con they recruited even more people who thought like them or could be bribed into helping them with money or power. From there they started buying up the weapons they'd need and getting started with plans to knock the legs out from under the American government. By the time people figured out they should be taking the group VERY seriously they were already global in strength and reach. They made this pretty clear when they kidnapped Doctor Adele Burkhart and conventional law enforcement people couldn't make any real progress in taking them down."
"I'm guessing this is where the good guys came in?" Giles asked his accent fluctuating as he spoke.
"Yeah. Up until Cobra really started flexing its muscles G.I Joe was a special counter-terrorist group delta team. Their top leader spearheaded the group's creation when he decided that the latest round of threats needed a new approach where a team could work around the limitations that other counter-terrorist groups had to put up with." He explained remembering the comic book issues he was pulling the info from, "Their missions were highly classified and covert or at least that was the soundbite."
"What do you mean?" Willow asked sounding a little confused.
Willow despite being a member of the trio that included him and Jesse hadn't been as much into the same cartoons or comics as he and his brother had been. As such while she wasn't completely in the dark about G.I. Joe the majority of the knowledge was absent from her otherwise brilliant brain.
"The cartons and the comics I read never lined up properly info-wise. Might as well have been two different timelines." He replied a little irritated at the lack of an attempt to make the stories of the two mediums mesh, "In the cartoon they never really have a backstory to either group. It's like they skipped season one of a TV show and dove right into season two. In the cartoon Cobra was made out to be your typical bad guy group with a bunch of egomaniacs at the top looking for money or power, a few named minions below'em playing the odds on who to side with and endless nameless cannon fodder minions. Guess since it was just a cartoon for kids and a way to sell toys the people behind the show didn't figured it'd be necessary to put a lot of thought into it."
"I doubt we will be that fortunate in this world." Giles said with skepticism and a slightly strengthened British accent, "Not if Janus' warning yesterday can be taken at face value. Who are the leaders of Cobra?"
"The top guy goes by the name Cobra Commander who always wears a mask of some kind and has a flair for the dramatic. Turns out he 's a member of a group of snake-men that live in a place called Cobras-la located in the Himalayas. He was a nobleman there and got sent out by his people to raise an army to conquer the world that supposedly had once belonged to his race prior to the ice age." He explained trying to summarize the info in his head, "His favourite approach to a problem is overwhelming force against a much weaker opponent. If he's more dangerous and competent in this reality than in the cartoon he probably deals more with the battlefield of the mind than guns and bombs."
To be perfectly honest he was a little afraid of just how much more competent Cobra Commander was in this reality. It had been an unshakable truth in the cartoon that a big advantage that G.I Joe had in their fight against Cobra was that Cobra Commander was an overconfident incompetent. It'd often been an unanswered question of his why the other members of Cobra had put up with him for as long as they had before cooking up a new one. The first season of of the cartoon numbered sixty-five episodes long and even if you reduced the number to take into account multi-part stories into account that still left a high number. If every one of those episodes represented a failure on the part of Cobra Commander then the rest of the organization had more than enough reasons to remove their single biggest weakness.
"Next we've got the guy who could be considered Cobra's second in command: Destro. His real name is James McCullen the Twenty-fourth and is the owner of M.A.R.S which stands for Military Armament Research Syndicate. He's the main source of Cobra's military hardware and tech." He explained looking at each of his friends in turn, "He's got a whole 'man in an iron mask' thing going on 'cause back during the English Civil War his ancestor was caught selling weapons to both sides. They didn't kill the guy because they couldn't afford not to have his weapons so the ancestor had a metal mask permanently put on him. Every family head after him has worn a similar mask choosing to make it a sign of pride rather than shame."
"If he's the number two guy in Cobra then why hasn't his company been deep sixed yet." Buffy asked frowning with lack of comprehension, "Isn't that what normally happens when a business helps a terrorist group?"
"Yeah that's what's supposed to happen but I'm betting the Scot has a knack for keeping the burden of proof from getting to where it needs to be for something to be done." Giles replied sounding like he'd met similar people before.
"Yep! I'm thinking it's the mask." He said putting forth his own theory, "Can't really see who's wearing it with just holes for the mouth and eyes. Plus all you have to do to 'exonerate' yourself is have someone else wear the mask, have a gizmo to copy the voice and get a lot of people to see the decoy doing something for Cobra. The whole 'one person can't be in two places' thing."
"Anyone else?" Willow asked looking like she was taking in the info like she would one of the assignments at school.
"Just one more. Anastasia Cisarovna aka Anastasia DeCobray aka The Baroness." He said remembering well HER character, "She's pretty much your cliche femme fatale spy. Her, Destro and Cobra Commander represent the top three people in Cobra. She has a thing for Destro but don't think it's rock solid. She has things she wants out of life and it's anyone's guess who she'll side with if Cobra Commander and Destro butt heads over something. I'd say she's mostly in it for herself and Destro's just an interest that may or may not be passing.
"The rest of Cobra are a collection of specialists in their fields who've hitched their wagons to Cobra on promises of wealth, power and opportunities to do stuff they'd get arrested for pretty quick without the organization's backing." He said finishing the broad strokes of the terrorist organization, "Like most villain teams they aren't loyal to anyone but themselves or what they want and just see Cobra as the best way to get ahead. At least in the cartoon that's how they were. Here? They could be a lot more solid and less likely to let any of the usual reasons for villain alliances breaking up gain any traction."
"Less likely doesn't mean impossible." Willow said in a calculating tone, "Since you know so much have you managed to figure out how we can 'gas up'?"
"As a matter of fact I do. Janus gave us the first hint with the folder he told me where to find." He said picking up the folder to show them before opening it up and laying out its contents, "Based on this I'd say we've been dropped right at the beginning of the second season which was a three parter. Still if Cobra Commander does turn out to be good at his job than things might be different."
"What happens?" Oz asked speaking for the first time.
"The Cobra higher ups get pissed at their latest loss but offing Cobra Commander isn't the solution." He replied putting his own reasoning into effect, "Everyone with even a little power in Cobra is only in it for themselves and if any of them tried to replace him there'd be a power struggle that'd probably wind up destroying Cobra. They know this and don't want it to happen since it'd put them back where they started. So their science, tech and magic expert Doctor Mindbender decides that if they can't choose a replacement from their ranks then he'll make one."
"Make one?! You can't just make a person out of nowhere." Buffy said scoffing at the idea, "And this is the 80s right? They didn't manage to clone a living thing until the 90s."
"This was a cartoon. If people've thought about it or used it in sci-fi before it's fair game." He said dismissing the facts, "Mindbender and the rest of the Cobra officers that didn't like Cobra Commander decided to harvest the DNA of history's greatest conquerers then mix them together to create the ultimate conquerer. Napoleon, Ivan the Terrible, Alexander the Great are just a few they harvested. The end result was a character named Serpentor though I'd say he was only a little better than Cobra Commander."
"And you think they might not do this in this reality?" Giles asked referring to his earlier comment.
"They chose to make this new leader because Cobra Commander was incompetent and had screwed up one time too many." He replied looking at each member of the team in turn, "If he isn't an idiot here and can actually lead them then they won't need to replace him or won't be able to. Assuming they don't toss the whole cloning idea out the window they'll probably go with what the Joes thought Cobra was up to at first. The creation of super soldiers."
"If they're looking to make super soldiers instead of a new leader they might change some of their targets." Missus S said with consideration, "Sure a lot of historical conquerers were also great warriors but I doubt Cobra Commander or the others want their creation to seize the throne of Cobra. They'll want something that'll help them conquer the world but will also stay subservient. Choosing the greatest warriors who never became a king or a queen would be best."
"That'd be the smart thing to do but who says they'll do something smart." Dawn said showing her doubt, "Besides even if it's warriors they're after there's no way to know who they'll go after and that leaves us with too many bases for us to cover. We need to narrow things down somehow."
"You got an idea?" He asked knowing it wouldn't be strange if she did.
"We use the tech we've got here to tap into Joe and Cobra communications." She replied wounding confident in her proposal, "Any operation that has Cobra criss-crossing the globe robbing tombs is going to need regular calls back and forth for status updates and new orders."
"And if G.I Joe gets involved they'll need to coordinate their teams to stop Cobra and that means a lot of radio chatter." He said picking up on what Dawn was aiming for, "But there's got to be tons of frequencies both sides can use. How do we find the right ones?"
"We'll start with the ones that are known to the public and adjust as needed." Giles said putting his support behind the idea, "We'll probably need to set something up to cope if their communiques are encrypted in some way."
"I can probably put something together without too much trouble." Willow said thinking the matter over, "I…kinda looked for new challenges once I started hacking into city offices to help fight the newest big bad. I might've bumped into something a little military natured. But I didn't stick around long! As soon as I guessed what it was I backed off!"
"Well seeing as how they didn't start poking around Sunnydale they probably didn't see you as a big enough threat." He said shaking his head a bit at his best friend's reckless 'hobbies', "Plus I doubt they know how to cross realities so it's not like they can follow you here. If you think you can tap into Cobra and Joe chatter then I believe you. Just…make sure you're extra careful. If either of them find out about us changing things is going to get a LOT harder."
The element of surprise could pay them back big time if used right.
If they could pop out of nowhere, make their changes and then vanish they could do some serious damage before the locals got their acts together. After that, with a little luck, they'd only need a handful of victories to gas up and leave reality behind them. So long as neither G.I Joe or Cobra found out about this place or somehow got information on them they could probably clear this 'level' without too much difficulty.
If this place WAS attacked though…
We'd have to pick a side. He thought a light grim look on his face, G.I Joe might be the good guys in the cartoon but if this place is closer to reality than something made for kids they might be pretty grey.
All of the Joes were portrayed as being the best of their respective fields and their team was supposed to be a highly classified. Sure it'd never looked like that in the cartoons but in this reality if their existence was supposed to be secret then anyone who knew about them would need to be 'neutralized'. In his mind that meant NDAs, forced conscription, imprisonment or death.
None of those would help them get back home.
In a world where he should've had the chance to fight alongside the heroes of his youth it looked like he'd have no choice but to treat them as enemies.

Willow's POV
There's gotta be something I'm missing. She thought as she continued to make adjustments to the base's communications equipment, But what?
From the moment she'd begun her work he'd been determined not to let any detail get overlooked whether it was setting up a web of bouncing signals through several communication satellites. She also took the time to set up an encryption that hadn't been invented until the late nineties so putting the two together she hoped it'd be enough to prevent anyone from tracing her efforts. From there she'd begun sifting through the range of frequencies used by various militaries as well as few that weren't but could theoretically be used the same way.
She wouldn't be lying if she said that a lot of what she was doing was acting on instinct more than anything calculated because while computer hacking she was good at radio communication was another matter altogether. Sure she knew the basics of it from science class and had seen a bit in movies but that hardly made her an expert. Still…whoever she'd gotten her new makeover from apparently had a knack for communications or at least knew more than she did.
As a result she'd been letting her whims, urges and compelling actions guide whatever changes or adjustments she did.
Sadly she didn't have a thing to show for her efforts even after four days of efforts and she was beginning to think she might need to ask the others to get ahold of a Cobra or G. radio. If she could then she would be able to look them over and find out what frequencies they operated on completing half the job for her. After that all she'd need to do was crack whatever encryption was being used.
Yeah THAT'S all! She thought with a bit of sarcasm before making another set of adjustments before waiting to see if she got any results.
The more she thought about it the more she became convinced that they were in over their heads and maybe should consider shattering the contents of their respective little boxes. After discussing the matter with Giles she was pretty sure the items contained a spell that'd take whatever skills and memories were attached to their upgrades and bring them to the surface. If this was indeed the case then destroying the item would make things easier but it'd also dump extra baggage into their conscious mind. Looking at their quarters they were able to get the general gist of who their donors had been but Giles had pointed out that those who became specialists in combat suffered from no too little amount of trauma.
Having all that brought into their conscious mind would be a nightmare.
An option of last resort if ever there was one.
"kkkk…Cobra Command to Night Raven One…Cobra Command to Night Raven One…kkk" came a burst of talking through the speakers of the communications console.
It wasn't crystal clear but it didn't need to be since she'd heard enough to know she'd finally hit pay dirt. Immediately she went to work to clear up the signal so she didn't miss a single thing. Fortunately for her she'd gotten a lot of practice making on the spot changes during past false alarms so she was able to get rid of more than three quarters of the interfering static.
Just in time to hear the reply to the previous communique.
"Night Raven One here… go ahead…" came a voice that had an accent to it that reminded her of something from the U.S.S.R but she couldn't be sure.
"Have located target site. Sending latitude and longitude." The man from Cobra Command said with all due professionalism.
Receiving the coordinates she copied them down before listening in to see if there was anything more.
"Location received. Will proceed with full deployment upon arrival." The Night Raven voice said before taking on a tone of inquiry, "Status on other deployments?"
"Leicester and Kumamoto deployments concluded successfully." The Cobra Command voice replied promptly, "Vergina and Sihong deployments in progress. All other deployments yet to arrive at destinations."
"Understood. Will reestablish contact upon completion of deployment." The accented voice said, "Night Raven One out."
With that the signal was lost but she didn't mind. The information she'd managed to overhear was just what they needed. Immediately she brought up the longitude and latitude that'd been sent to the Night Raven revealing it to be a location north of modern day Sparta. If Xander's hunch was right then there was a corpse belonging to either a history making warrior or conquerer there that Cobra had set its sights on recovering some DNA from. Unfortunately she hadn't been as much of a history expert as she was a computer expert so there was only one thing to do.
Get the rest of the gang out of bed and get them to the C&C.
Reaching over to a nearby red button she hesitated only briefly before pressing it setting off a loud alarm klaxon as well as activating rotating red alarm lights built into the walls. It wasn't the nicest way of getting the job done but it would get the others here in a hurry.
Xander and Buffy were the first to arrive their hair in disarray since they'd no doubt been sleeping when the alarm went off. The former looked like he'd be demanding a good explanation while the latter yawned implying that she was still half asleep. When the others arrived they didn't look much better so she privately promised herself that she'd use the supplies in the kitchen to make them a broad assortment of cookies once they got back.
"I take it you found something Willow?" Giles asked looking about the room for a moment before walking over to a coffee machine.
It was only after he'd poured himself a cup that the Brit realized what he was doing and it looked like he was contemplating dumping the entire thing down the sink. It wouldn't surprise her since she'd never seen Giles drink anything other than tea but in the end her mentor simply shrugged before taking a sip.
Then he emptied two packets of sugar and poured a little cream into it.
"Yep. Cobra Command got in touch with someone on a Night Raven and gave them a location to head to. Longitude and Latitude puts it north of modern day Sparta." She replied bringing up a map on the screen hat focused on the location in question, "They also mentioned that the deployments in Leicester and Kumamoto were concluded successfully."
"Oh dear!" Giles exclaimed with increased concern.
"That's bad I take it?" Xander asked sounding like he had an idea of what was upsetting Giles.
"While Sparta has no shortage of great warriors there are two there that would represent tempting targets and only one whose grave might well be north of Sparta." Giles replied looking like his brain was going through its paces, "King Leonidas the First."
"Leonidas? As in Battle of Thermopylae Leonidas?" Missus S asked realizing the gravity of the situation.
"The same. In our world King Leonidas' remains have never been found. Many have claimed to have found them but none have been conclusively proven to be the genuine article." Giles replied nodding his head, "As for Vergina and Sihong I can only speculate that Cobra might be after the remains of Alexander the Great and the great Chinese warrior Lü Bu. It would seem that your suspicion that Cobra would choose warriors over conquerers was well founded Xander."
"Then we need to get to the location the Night Raven received as fast as we can." Buffy said in a tone she remembered all too well, "Let's gear up and move out."
"And how exactly are we supposed to get there?" Dawn asked sounding like she didn't think highly of her sister's charge in strategy, "Do we even know who they'll be sending to get the DNA?"
"We've got a hanger full of aircraft that should be able to get us there in no time at all." Buffy replied as though it was obvious, "As for who we'll be taking down once we get there I'm going to go out on a limb and say 'bad guys'."
"As much as I'd like a little more info Buffy's got the right idea." Xander said siding with the black clad Slayer, "There's no telling who Cobra will send to Sparta to get their DNA sample and if we wait until we know it might be too late. We'll just have to head there and hope for the best."
"Not exactly a recipe for success Xander." She said not liking the idea of skipping over the research part of the equation.
"We've handled worse." He said before heading for the door, "I'm gearing up."
While she couldn't dismiss the claim that they'd managed to save the day with only a little info and a seat of their pants plan the stakes were a little higher in this reality. Watching as the others followed Xander's example she sighed as she realized that it'd take more than her concerns to make them wait for better information.
She just hoped that haste didn't wind up costing them in the end.
Approaching the Coordinates
A Few Hours Later
Dawn's POV
"We've arrived at the LZ." She said letting her impulses and instincts guide her piloting of the D77-TC Pelican, "Hope we didn't give ourselves away. This thing isn't exactly quiet as a mouse."
"I hadn't noticed." Giles said with dry sarcasm from the passenger area of the craft.
She smiled at that because while she was used to the stiff upper lip Brit she definitely liked the bits of snark and sarcasm that were coming out of the librarian's mouth of late. It made him seem less like he had a stick up his ass and more like a regular person. She'd been a little concerned about bringing him into the field since despite the changes he'd undergone before they all got dropped here he hadn't really been made any younger. At best she figured he was in better shape physically than he'd been back in Sunnydale but that was about it. She'd overheard Buffy say how Giles got tossed around by demons and vamps often enough that she knew if the man didn't kill the monster before it got that close he was destined for an ice pack later on. Giles however had insisted on accompanying them and providing support pointing out that after dealing with demons and vampires fighting humans would be much easier.
For one thing bullets and grenades tended to hurt humans a lot more than they did demons and Cobra troopers were likely significantly slower than the monsters back in Sunnydale. The Brit made it clear he wouldn't relish the idea of mixing it up close quarters with the terrorists but he was confident he could keep matters from sliding into a scenario like that.
A minute later the Pelican was on the ground and she powered down the systems one by one. As an added precaution she let her instincts guide her in reaching under the dashboard of controls in front of her, find a specifically shaped item and yank it free of its port. Bringing it out for her eyes to see she was pleased that it wasn't damaged and if she was right it'd make it impossible for someone to steal the aircraft. She knew that taking it into the fight would be too risky though since a stray shot would destroy it stranding the lot of them here so she stashed it in the First Aid kit hanging on the wall behind her.
"Okay so here's the plan." Giles said after walking to the disembarkation ramp and turning around, "Buffy and Xander will head to points A and B respectively. Once there they will ready their weapons but NOT fire. Your target will be whatever device or container might contain Leonidas' DNA. Once you see it DESTROY it. Without the DNA Cobra won't have any choice but to leave empty handed."
"What's to stop them from just getting another sample?" She asked since it'd be pointless to destroy one bottle of DNA when another could be filled.
"That's be where Missus Summers and I come in." Giles replied picking up a MGL-105 grenade launcher, "It took awhile to put together but I've managed to make some ammunition that'll suit our needs. Fire two or three of these into Leonidas' grave and the DNA will be hopelessly tainted."
"And you know how to do this how?" Xander asked even as he began reconfiguring his rifle.
"Cobra is hardly the first group to consider harnessing the blood of Earth's greatest warriors." Giles replied popping open his weapon before loading it with ammunition, "Back home there were quite a few demons who thought it'd be poetic justice to use the greatest humans to bring about humanity's end. As such the Council devoted resources to devising a way to quickly and efficiently contaminate human remains so as to make them useless for such schemes. We're fortunate that Spartan's didn't believe in building tombs above or below ground for their dead even for their kings. In the case of King Leonidas and the three hundred Spartans that fought at his side only a monument was erected in their honour as well as tombstones."
"Well that'll make this a little easier." Xander said sounding reassured, "If he'd been in a tomb you'd probably have to fire quite a few shots into it to do the job and that's assuming he wasn't inside a coffin of some kind."
"Quite so. Once Cobra's sample and the source have been dealt with all of us are to return here to the Pelican and leave the area." Giles said bringing his briefing to a close.
"Wouldn't it be a good idea to try and find out what other places they plan on hitting?" Buffy asked sliding an impressive looking sci-fi pistol into her hip holster, "Maybe even find out where they're planning on making this ultimate warrior."
"She's got a point. We could be at this forever if we stick to just going from grave to grave to stop them." She said putting the assault rifle that'd been in her room on her back where built in magnets held it in place, "If we destroy the lab and make take out Doctor Mindbender then we can turn the entire operation to ash."
"Or provoke an aggressive response from Cobra." Giles pointed out in opposition to the idea, "We have no idea how long it'll take to gas up enough energy to open a portal and it'd be stupid to think they'll never find our base. Our best option is to keep the attention we draw from the locals to a minimum while gathering as much energy as we can for the portal. Killing a high ranking member of Cobra would definitely lead to them seeking us out and preparing an appropriate form of retaliation."
"In other words you want us to build up the energy we need with a hundred small changes that'll be overlooked instead of ten big things that'll have everyone looking for us." Mom said summing up the Brit's approach for everyone to understand.
"Precisely. Regardless of whatever enhancements Janus may have given us we don't have the manpower or firepower capable of defeating global organizations in a direct conflict." Giles said after finishing the loading of his weapon and clicking it shut, "More than that we're not here to win G.I Joe's war against Cobra for them. We came here by accident and our priority has to be getting what we need to leave without starting World War Three."
Right.
Looking at Buffy, Xander, Willow and Oz a silent statement was conveyed and confirmed between the four of them.
Giles might like to put it up as a form of strategy but the truth of the matter was that the real reason they were taking this approach was because it was the one with the least chance of people dying on either side. She wasn't all that concerned with the efforts to keep the 'team' alive and not exposing them to unnecessary danger but she didn't think she liked the idea of them taking the roundabout route just because the adults didn't want the 'kids' killing humans. Honestly she wasn't crazy about the idea either but if this was a closer to reality version of the G.I Joe cartoon she'd watched with Xander then Cobra had done things that'd get them charged with crimes against humanity.
In that light removing one of their higher ranked members from the world was perfectly acceptable.
For now though we'll do it Giles' way. She thought before putting her helmet on and feeling the seals lock into place, But if anyone tries to shoot Xander I'm putting a bullet through their brains.
Being the last one out she pressed the button on the right side of the ramp to close it before moving to a rear support position for the group comprised of herself, Missus S, Giles, Willow and Oz. Willow's boyfriend hadn't really said all that much since they'd arrived in this new world but that really wasn't anything too new. If there was one thing that you could say about Oz it was that the guy didn't say anything frivolous and when he did speak it was worth your while to listen. Carrying an assault rifle of an older make she could tell that nothing was missing his notice as they approached the coordinates where Cobra would be operating.
As they got closer Buffy and Xander broke off from the group to head towards their designated points while the rest of them merely did their best to manage a crouching advance while using the surrounding vegetation for cover. Oddly enough none of the people she could see were doing all that bad, not like they were professionals though, making her think that their upgrade package was coming to play. She on the other hand had to be twice as careful and go twice as low without sacrificing speed since she towered over the rest of the team and her armour wasn't exactly coloured for blending into a forest environment. Still the same instincts that'd let her pilot the Pelican here were also helping her manage her large form so she'd wait until she got spotted three missions in a row before giving up on being stealthy.
A minute later Giles thrust a hand back in a way that could only mean 'stop' and without hesitation the group froze while also dropping to one knee. Peeking up over the foliage as carefully as she could she instantly saw why since a little under a hundred yards ahead of them there was a clearing and it was occupied by somewhat familiar figures in blue, black and red. Vipers she thought they were called and if they weren't on guard they were moving equipment around diligently as though screwing up had been burned out of their souls as a possibility.
Hmmm…about twelve that I can see. She thought before thinking to check her helmet HUD, And about six more that I can't. Eighteen in total.
Based on the positions and movement patterns she was seeing it looked like half were on guard duty, no doubt to oppose G.I Joe if they showed up, while the rest were helping unearth Leonidas. Narrowing her eyes she tried to find the Cobra officer running the operation but whether it was the abundance of minions or equipment she couldn't make anything out.
"Fox one to Fox two and three. Sitrep." Giles whispered pressing the transmit button on a microphone attached to the shoulder of his vest.
"Fox two here. Count eighteen bad guys all armed." Buffy said through the team's com-gear, "No sign of a C.O but plenty of activity."
"Fox three here. Same but no way would the big shots leave the cannon fodder without a minder of some kind." Xander said his voice crisp and to the point, "Independent thought isn't exactly encouraged in—wait! I think I see…yeah…found the minder."
"Can you identify?" Giles asked wanting more info.
"Looks like we lucked out. We've got one of the top three here overseeing things." Xander said with a drop of interest, "It's the Baroness. Still wearing that black bodysuit with the heeled boots but it's definitely designed for combat instead of eye candy."
Great.
Of all the people that could've been running the operation it had to be one of the two characters whose job it was to make men think with their little heads instead of the one on their shoulders. Plus if this was a more realistic and PG-13 or higher world then it meant that the glasses wearing woman could do a helluva lot more than what was permitted for seduction in a cartoon. She'd have to make sure that Xander never got captured but at least they wouldn't be around long enough for them to need to head into a town or city. With only one viable scenario for the Cobra spy to work her wiles on him she had the advantage.
"Anything else?" Giles prompted no doubt wanting some more relevant information.
"Looks like they've found the grave and have been digging for awhile." Buffy replied pausing possibly to adjust the scope on her weapon, "Don't think it'll be much longer though. Assuming Spartans don't bury their dead any deeper than we do they should find their target any minute now."
"Any sign of the key piece of technology?" Giles asked referring to whatever means was going to be used to gain a DNA sample.
"Nothing that matches the description." Xander replied with some disappointment, "Got a table that's got some gear on it that's not meant for digging though. Probably one of them."
"Keep watch then. You know what to do." Giles said sounding half distracted with thought, "Fox One out."
"Plan?" Oz asked from his position.
"You and Willow go to a spot on the side of the clearing opposite Buffy and Xander's sniping positions. Once they open fire Cobra will likely counterattack which means the two of you will be needed to divide their attention to ensure they're not overwhelmed." Giles replied after a moment's thought, "Dawn, Missus Summers and I will remain here and once the fighting starts will push for the grave. With a little good fortune I won't have any trouble getting close enough to the grave to fire a few grenades into it."
"How many do you think you'll need?" She asked in case they could just fire all six in the general area of the grave and call it a done deal.
"Presuming I can get a stone's throw away from the grave one or two should suffice." Giles replied promptly, "Any further away and I will need to get more generous with the ammunition."
"Then let's hope they're too busy covering their own butts to bother with us." She said pulling the assault rifle off of her back.
A nice thought but she wouldn't put much hope in it.
Buffy's POV
I didn't sign up for this. She thought even as the scoped the target area, None of this.
It'd been hovering in the back of her mind ever since Janus briefed them and Xander told them what sort of world they were now in. She'd managed to distract herself up until now by exploring their base or firing off a few shots at the shooting range she found but now…now she had to face a rather unpleasant truth.
She was probably going to have to shoot people soon.
Terrorists yeah but people just the same.
If there was one thing that Giles had hammered home and that she'd been completely supportive of was that Slayers didn't kill humans. They stopped them, they beat the crap out of them but taking a human life was forbidden. It was the job of the Slayer to protect the human race against the demons and the vampires.
In this world though the only monsters that existed were the humans who didn't care what they had to do to get what they want or who suffered as a result of their efforts. In her mind that was a job for the police or the military.
Not her and not her friends.
Yet here they were.
Looking down the scope of the pistol that she'd selected from the armoury she remembered examining it as well as the attachments that'd been stored alongside it. She'd tried to tap into the same part of her that made using swords and pointy things easy but it'd still taken some experimentation to figure out what part was supposed to go where. By the time they left on this mission she'd known enough to have confidence in it and so she watched for the first sign of her target.
A piece of tech meant to pull DNA out of a corpse so some mad scientist could make a super soldier out of it.
She did her best not to let her impatience show as the minutes ticked up but she was very much a dive in and kick ass kind of Slayer. However she knew that they were in a new world with new rules plus enemies that had laser guns so she wasn't about to get Swiss cheesed if she could help it.
Almost ten minutes later though her patience paid off when the woman who could only have been the Baroness approached the table with all the gear on it. With little hesitation the woman picked up something that looked like a mechanical spider before approaching the hole her minions had dug into the ground. Without a doubt it had to be the DNA extractor so the only question she had to ask herself was when would be the best time to shoot it.
Before or after it'd done its job?
True she was fairly sure that the device was the one that needed a burning hole in it but there was always the chance that she was mistaken. Maybe it was just some sort of tester meant to confirm the ID of the body. No. Best to wait until it looked like Cobra had what it'd come for before making a move because once the shooting started getting a second chance to line up a precise shot would be much more difficult.
That plus she'd seen enough action movies to know that once a sniper started shooting it was only a matter of time before their location was determined. After that it'd all come down to what method Cobra chose to use to deal with her: send troops up to her position or just bombard her location with firepower. In either case the smart move on her part would be to change locations after the first few shots rather than overstay her welcome.
The fact that Giles hadn't designated any sniping points other than the ones she and Xander now occupied didn't really bother her. She'd seen the same map as the rest of them so she had a good idea about where all the tall spots were so if things got hot where she was she knew where to go next.
Looks like it was a DNA extractor after all. She thought as she watched the Baroness lift the device out of the hole and begin issuing orders.
Focusing at a higher level she lined up the crosshairs on her scope with the device waiting for that perfect moment to shoot. Unlike with a projectile weapon she didn't have to worry about things like range, air or anything else. All she needed was a straight line and an opportunity.
And she got one.
Beong!
In one shot a bolt of crimson energy shot through the air and gave the device a new hole with flames and smoke licking at the edges for a few seconds before tapering off.
A second later something else hit the device and she knew that Xander had added a shot from his own weapon to the initial salvo. With his shot though it compounded the damage she'd done and nearly broke the device in half pretty much confirming the uselessness of the sample inside. After that though she began the second phase of the plan: distraction. Keep Cobra focused on her to give Giles the opportunity he needed to keep the terrorists from going back for seconds. With direct hits too difficult to be precise and non-lethal she instead took aim at anything that might explode if the fuse was lit. She did her best to ensure that when the objects blew no one was close enough to be more than shook up by the blast. Assuming Cobra cared even a little about their men their uniforms should be able to keep any damage to scrapes and bruises.
"COOBBRRAAA!" The Baroness yelled before enough of her minions got their acts together and began to rain laser fire down on her position.
Seeing the shots she couldn't help but feel as though she was looking at antiques or perhaps inefficient copies of her own weapons. These weren't forearm sized bolts like what came from her weapon but rather spears of light that lingered in the air half a second longer than instinct was telling her they should. In the end though the people wielding the weapons were better than what she'd seen from sci-fi movies in the past where minions couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. A few shots went over her head while others impacted on the ground in front of her causing smoke to rise briefly. She was just about to crawl away when she got help from the opposite side of the clearing in the form of controlled weapons fire.
Didn't mean she was going to push her luck though.
Crawling a short distance before getting to her feet she began to make her way to one of the other high points in the immediate area when a sound caused her body to flatten itself against the trunk of a tree. The reason became clear a few moments later when two of the Cobra troopers came out from behind a dense collection of bushes obviously looking for her. She could try to rush them since she'd already proven to her satisfaction that she still had her Slayer powers but instead she decided to test something else out. Focusing her gaze on the trooper furthest from her she pressed a few buttons on the wrist controls portion of her armour.
"Alright…shock'em!" She whispered and just like she hoped the circular thing that'd been part of her armour woke up, detached and by some unseen means moved to do as she asked.
A second or two before the closer trooper caught sight of the UFO she darted out from behind the tree and made for his location. Like clockwork the second the robot thing caught his attention her enemy directed his focus toward it rather than the way it came making it easy for her to grab his left arm before executing a throw that slammed him into the ground. Then just for good measure she quickly knelt down and punched him in the side of the head to make sure he wouldn't be getting up anytime soon.
Hearing the sounds of crackling electricity and the sound of someone getting some current sent through them she felt confident that the robot had KOed the other one. Turning to confirm this she watched as the Cobra trooper dropped to the ground slightly smoking even as the UFO gracefully floated back over to her before reattaching itself to the back of her armour. She could still feel something so she figured it must've gone into some sort of standby mode until she told it to do something else.
It'd been two evenings ago that she'd been playing around with her armour to get a better feel for it that she'd decided to see what the forearm controls were for. When nothing aside from a few beeps and boops had happened she'd avoided getting frustrated and instead looked for some sort of users manual in her room. Some of the reading material made sense, other stuff was technical jargon that was way over her head, but eventually she found what she was after. She didn't read through the whole thing but she got most of the high points including how to control her ID10 seeker droid. It'd been an interesting read but this was the first time she'd had a chance to put it to use.
Definitely gotta find out what else it can do when we get back. She thought with a grin before getting her mind back on the job.
With a bit more caution than before she resumed moving towards the next best sniping position so she could support her team before they bugged out. Hopefully it wouldn't take long for Giles to poison Leonidas' body because she didn't want to be here if Cobra got reinforcements or G.I Joe showed up.
She wanted out of this reality as soon as possible.
