CHAPTER 2- Old habits
Harry Potter had to ruin everything. Draco had tried to avoid Potter, this task became impossible. It took all his self-control to not glare daggers into the boy's head which was growing increasingly difficult. Everything about Potter made his blood boil, but he held back. He didn't want to be his father, much less a death eater so he held back.
They hadn't even made it a week into their fifth year of school when he'd heard Potter call him a "ferret." Draco stopped dead in his tracks and cocked his head to the side. This was until Pansy Parkinson showed up with the now even taller Crabbe and Goyle. Battle commenced, however Draco didn't play a part in it. Instead, he was pulled off to the side by none other than Pansy. "Why did you just stand there like a confused child?" She mocked with her arms crossed at him.
"Bloody hell Pansy! Excuse me for having other things on my mind other than Potter." He resorted, leaning dejectedly against the castles wall. Then an exciting idea popped into his head, his frown turned into a mischievous smirk.
"When's our next potions class?"
"Monday, who cares."
"Isn't scarhead and Weasley in that class?" He asked with a comical hand placed under his chin. Pansy smirked back at him, throwing an arm around his shoulders, leading them down the corridor scheming their revenge.
Monday had finally come, Draco and Pansy waited with cunning patience until potions class. For whatever reason, Snape liked to keep Draco and Potter at an arm's length of each other. If they were to swap partners, to the torment of Potter, they'd be forced together.
Harry was minding his own business. Him and Ron had never found potions interesting so they'd either be half-asleep or trying to avoid Snape. Today they'd opted to pretend they were working. Nothing out of the ordinary until a neatly folded piece of paper dropped from the sky, landing on his head. Ron looked over Harry's shoulder as the piece of paper was unfolded to reveal an awful attempt at a portrait of Harry. He had glasses that were drawn bigger than his face and his scar looked as if it were shocking him.
Immediately, they didn't need to read the sarcastically written, "love your biggest fan, Draco Malfoy" to know exactly who it was from. In sync, both their heads whipped to the left to scowl at the two Slytherins snickers.
Class went on and students had been tasked to make a potion. Malfoy was very focused on his work, he'd sent Parkinson off to get ingredients as to not disrupt his concentration. This was the perfect time to strike. "Hand me five batwings." He ordered. All Parkinson could do is sigh and hand them to him. Then he opened his hand and saw the mistake. "Don't you have eyes, or can you just not count? This is six." Before he was finished telling her off, he was abruptly stopped as he felt a shock in his hand which made him jump; causing the batwings to fall into the cauldron.
Now it was the Gryffindors turn to snicker at their efforts. Malfoy didn't glare at Harry for long as he scrambled to save the potion. Harry and Ron saw Malfoy whisper something in Parkinson's ear, what they missed to see was him handing her something behind her back. Parkinson practically skipped over to the front of the Gryffindor's desk. Her smile was sickly sweet as she dropped something into their cauldron so quickly, they didn't have time to see what exactly had gone in.
As soon as Parkinson made her way back to stand next to Malfoy, Ron got a face full of smoke turning his skin purple. Snape had pushed his way through the sea of students to reach Harry and Ron with a sour face ready to do his seemingly favourite part of teaching -giving detentions.
Other Slytherins had huddled into a circle, laughing away at Malfoy's dramatic description of Ron's now angry purple face. As the students funnelled out of the room, Malfoy flashed Ron a wicked smile. "Looking good Weasley." Parkinson laughed loudly behind him as they left together.
A month into the terror of Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter constantly trying to foil each other, many were surprised no one had died yet. From all the pranks, insults and swearing that had been flying back and forth, both red and green houses were more than riled up.
It was dinner time at Hogwarts, the Gryffindor table was buzzing with chatter. Harry sat with Hermione and Ron like every day, casually eating. Peace was broken when Malfoy marched into the room with Parkinson behind him. "What's up with the two of you?" Hermione stated. She rolled her eyes when she was met with two shrugs. "I mean Harry and Malfoy. You guys are acting like you want to kill each other."
Harry gripped his knife at little tighter, dragging it through his poor potatoes. Progressively, over the month things had become more aggressive with the rivals. Ron spoke up for him. "I bet Malfoy is up to something but Harry, everyone's starting to think you're crazy." Dropping his knife, Harry shook his head. He'd gotten into heated arguments with a few fellow Gryffindor's over what/who killed Cedric. "We're enemies. It's always been like this." He said unconvincingly -at least not to Hermione.
Reality was he felt exhausted. Even though there were many things he could say about the situation, he didn't want to think about it. Umbridge and her dislike for him took up more of the space in his mind -he didn't need Malfoy's perfect hair distracting him.
That didn't stop his attention being pulled to the Slytherin table as Malfoy slipped away, quietly creeping out of the room. Only a few minutes later did he see Parkinson looking around calling for the missing boy, then give up slumping into the table.
Early evening, the sun was setting leaving swirls of pinks and purples in between the clouds. He'd successfully lost his friends watchful gaze and escaped the castle. The air was fresh in his lungs as he walked towards the Black Lake where Luna Lovegood was waiting for him.
Many things had changed since his fourth year. Cho's friends were nice but as they were a year older than him, they'd sometimes hangout with their older boyfriends which weren't exactly pleased to find another boy with them. Luna was a year younger, he was introduced to her by one of Cho's friend's younger sister. Although he'd admit she was a little 'loony' she had a wise, gentle soul.
Luna spotted him from behind her magazine she'd been reading upside down and waved him over. "Hello Draco, it's a lovely evening isn't it?" She said in her breathy high-pitched voice. They had a small talk about nothing, he felt himself shift away from her to investigate the depts of the Black Lake. "Are you the one who's been fighting with Harry?" At first, he didn't register what she was talking about. Harry? That name sounded so odd to him, like it was missing something.
Potter. "Do you know him?" That was a stupid question. Everyone knew Potter. "Yes, he's a friend of mine." Friends? Draco's relaxed posture straightened as he looked at her. No matter what she'd hear him say she always had this slight wonder to her face, like she had just figured something out that you'd wish to know.
"Me and HARRY have been fighting since we were eleven in case you weren't aware." He finally replied to her question truthfully. Knowing Luna for quite some time now, he knew better than to hide anything. After all, she was a Ravenclaw, she'd figure him out.
He wanted to move away from the subject of Potter, he had other things on his mind. Then, he noticed a loaf of bread next to Luna, little pieces of it had been pulled off. There was his distraction. "Why do you have a whole loaf of bread with you?" He asked as if it was the most important question in the world. Quickly, she caught on and indulged him. "The Giant Squid sometimes likes to take pieces of bread, it works better when you're alone."
Demonstrating it to him, she proceeded to pull off a piece of bread and let it float in the water. The water bubbled slightly, then a thick purple tentacle rose from out the water, wrapped around the piece of bread, and tugged it down into the water, leaving ripples splashing at the sides of the lake. "You should try it yourself."
And with that, Draco took hold of the distraction and willed it to keep his mind busy.
Great. Once again, another sleepless night. Harry had accepted this year was going to be just as eventful as the previous year at Hogwarts. Wondering around the corridors had been a dangerous habit he couldn't break. Many time's he'd been so tired he'd walk into pillars. Even under his invisibility cloak, he couldn't protect himself from that delirious clumsiness he'd undergo after wandering around for hours on end at the dead of night.
He peered out a window that overlooked the Black Lake. Sure-enough he saw Draco Malfoy. One hand was tucked away in his pocket the other holding something Harry couldn't quite make out. That's when he opened his eyes a little wider, noticing that this wasn't something his sleepy mind had constructed.
With a hurried pace, he set out to catch Malfoy in whatever he was doing. Probably something evil -that's what comforted Harry.
Just as he got outside, Malfoy had made his way to sit by the lake, his back to Harry.
Draco felt incredibly stupid with a loaf of bread keeping him company. He'd pinched it from the kitchens with his harsh glare shutting down any protests. The Great Lake looked much deeper and blacker than earlier at evening -crunch. Snapping his head behind him, something had stepped on a leaf. Then, back to silence. Narrowing his eyes, he could see the air shift as something made its way towards him. "Come for a midnight stroll?" He mocked the air.
A feeling of satisfaction filled him as a person was revealed. You couldn't sneak up on a Malfoy, they'd be the one to do the sneaking. The moonlight caught the figures glasses, making the round rim glow silver.
Potter. When Potter got closer, it was still too dark to make out every detail of his face. "What are you doing, Malfoy?" The question didn't seem hateful, just obnoxiously curious like Potter was at a zoo, seeing an animal for the first time. Something made his skin itch. "Plotting to take over the school, what about you?" Draco replied, turning away to secretly smile at his sarcasm. As Potter got closer to him, a chill ran up his spine. "And the bread?" This wasn't really the time to be having this discussion. For one, Draco wasn't in the mood.
"Don't you have something better to do than bother me, Potter? Shouldn't you be running off with your little gang of thick-headed Gryffindor's." He spat hoping his venom would rid himself of the unwanted company. Unfortunately, Potter's questions quickly turned into a heated interrogation and Draco only got more defensive.
Without warning, Draco stood up and went to grab the loaf of bread. Of course, Harry Potter and his quidditch reflexes snatched the loaf away from him. They looked in between each other at the bread and closed in. Rage hit its boiling point and Draco had about enough of this. "As much as I love spending time with you, I've actually got a life outside arguing with you. Now give it back!"
"Only when you tell me what you're doing!" Potter shouted. They couldn't get into another screaming match, so Draco decided to resolve this physically. Before he could do anything, Potter had thought the same thing and sharply ripped it from Draco's hands. The force made Draco start to fall backwards. He didn't know what was happening as Potter grabbed onto his collar and harshly brought him back onto the right side. This only changed the direction Draco fell in.
Harry's hands were in the damp grass, that rustled in the cold air. The only light being the full moon, shining directly behind him. Under him, Draco Malfoy. Hair as silver as polished cutlery and eyes as grey as smoke made Harry lean in closer. Moonlight lit half of his face, making the boys already pale skin glimmer. "Potter…" Their breath was tangled together in the cool air, much like their bodies.
"Get off…" Sighed Malfoy in a low tone, his head tilled to the side, refusing to look at Harry. Nodding, he rushed to get up whereas Malfoy just sat up; gazing at something Harry couldn't see. Against his better judgement, he offered his hand out. The moment he offered it, he'd instantly regretted it.
Malfoy focused suspiciously on the hand that he held out for him, like this was a trap. But then he flashed a smile, showing off the whites of his teeth. Harry was surprised that he could muster up something so attractive that he was unprepared for when Malfoy took his hand and tugged it down, drawing Harry back onto the grass, switching their positions.
Bellowing laughter erupted from Malfoy as his face twisted back into its usual mean smirk. As quickly as the laughter had started, it stopped. Harry got up and was about to speak until he heard the question. "I must not tell lies?" Concern washed over Malfoy's face as he continued to hold Harry's hand. One of his fingers gently traced over the scar.
Jumping away, he pulled his sleeve down to cover his injured hand once again. Not even his friends had noticed the scar yet. The only smart decision Harry made that night was to keep his mouth shut as to not give himself away. Malfoy stalked over to him and held him still by his collar. "The only person meant to torture you, is me!" He growled. And with that, Harry took off running, wind smacking him in the face and burning his lungs.
Somewhere in the distance he could just about hear Malfoy call after him. Not for him to come back but threatening him. "And don't you forget it, Potter!"
A/N- Now we are getting into their fifth year at Hogwarts. Draco Malfoy is trying to be a better person (and currently failing) and Harry Potter is doing what he does best, be a hero. I'm trying to show that the both of them are getting in the way of each others goals with a bit of romantic foreshadowing. I like the idea that Draco and Luna in another world could of been friends, I feel like their personalities compliment each other nicely. Do you agree?
