Chapter 2: The Long Road

Fox felt excited. He couldn't remember the last time he'd actually been out on a mission. Of course delivering a mysterious package wasn't much to write home about on its own, but he was grateful just to be doing something besides looking at an empty contract inbox, or endlessly scouring mercenary job postings—of which there were none. Why, any mercenary would kill to get his current job.

Driving in the Landmaster gave him a sense of power. A satisfying hum massaged his ears, and he could feel the rumble of the engine reverberating through his seat. Such a powerful beast, yet it instantly reacted to every command he gave it. He felt invincible; nothing short of Andross's entire army could stop him now, and he'd already blown them to smithereens years ago.

Some of the more jealous type might try to kid him about it. For instance, Wolf "Doesn't-Believe-in-Carriers-or-Situational-Vehicles-(Except-in-Smash)" O'Donnell called it overcompensating. Fox's response was… overcompensating for what? He'd won the Lylat War. No one cared if he had a small dick anymore.

On the surface, Titania wasn't much to look at. That's because there wasn't anything to look at—at least at first glance. Just grains of sand, rolling dunes, and storm clouds as far as the eye could see. But at the same time, that's what made it so breathtaking and awe-inspiring. Now that Fox wasn't gunning down automated turrets, dodging mines, and blasting ancient superweapons, he could finally take his time to soak up the sights. The horizon was no longer full of enemies. It was… empty. With nothing obstructing the landscape, he could finally appreciate just how big the desert was.

Both Aquas and Zoness were entirely covered in a sea of water; Fichina in a sea of snow. Titania, on the other hand, had a sea of desert—and it spanned the entire globe. Everywhere Fox looked, there was nothing but sand. It reminded him of when he was a only a small kit at the beach, and the shore seemed so big and endless. It looked like the background of a virtual flight simulator, empty except for an endless checkered grid stretching to the horizon, where the lines converged to singularity. It felt like an empty game world, a sandbox before the programmer populated it with assets and characters. But what made it feel unbearably surreal was the fact Fox was experiencing it in real life. The liminal space was beginning to take its toll on his brain, seeming like an abstract nightmare.

If it wasn't for the road grounding him, or the slightly paler horizon, or the darker clouds above, Fox would've thought he was floating in a muddy red void, losing track of up and down. There was so much sand his brain began tuning it out, like it had the white noise of his humming engine. He began to pick-up on slightly smaller details hidden to the unperceptive eye—or at least, an eye that had nothing else to look at for long stretches of time. A boulder here; an alien cactus there. Stones cut in unnaturally-angular shapes. The carcass of a downed Venomian fighter, lying buried in sand from years of dust storms. If he squinted he could see mountains in the distance, but they weren't close enough for him to enjoy their beauty.

Out of curiosity, he looked down at the progress tracker on the Landmaster's heads-up display, checking how far he'd come.

Really?! He'd made that little progress? It felt like he'd been driving for ages already. Looked like this journey was going to take a lot longer than he had first assumed. Well, he better get used to it. He cracked his neck, flexed his fingers, and shifted his ass on the seat, ensuring he remained comfortable.

God, if only he had someone to talk to. He wished he'd brought another teammate along. He thought about calling one of them up and shooting the shit for a while, but Titania's perpetual cloud of ion storms prevented long-range communications from penetrating the atmosphere. He'd give anything to hear Peppy's old-fashioned drawl reminiscing about Star Fox's "golden days", or Slippy's hi-pitched, squeaky voice explaining some technical nonsense, or Falco's over-animated squawks as he complained about some argument he had with Katt. He really took his friends for granted sometimes. Sure, those particular quirks annoyed him in the present, but sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone.

How much longer of this? he asked himself, glancing back down at the tracker.

0.2% Complete

That didn't make sense. He flicked the screen a few times.

After another second it went up to 0.3%.

"ARRRRGH!" he growled, thrusting his hands in the air. That made it worse! He knew it wasn't broken now; he had actually covered that little distance since the last time he'd checked.

Frowning darkly now, he scowled at the endless landscape, looking around. He found himself wishing there was something else to the job; some other challenge besides surviving the monotony. Like the road, for instance. It was ramrod straight, with no turns whatsoever. If only the desert wasn't so flat, and he could climb up hills and swoop down valleys. If only it twisted and turned, weaving in and out of ruins or giant skeletal remains or… something. If only that Goras monster was still around. If only he accidentally drove into a minefield and had to carefully navigate his way out—or had to outrun their fuses and blast his way through, detonating explosion after explosion in his tracks. If only there were some space pirates or rogue Venomians who were out to get this mysterious box of his. Heck, he'd even settle for fighting some other mercenaries bent on completing the mission instead of him. If only.

Anything was better than this. This pointless waiting. This perpetual nothing. This frozen moment in time.

That was it; it felt like he was doing nothing but wasting time. He would've believed it too, if he wasn't getting paid for it. He wouldn't care if the general asked him to count every grain of sand on the runway; he'd do it as long as he got something as a reward.

Fox shook his head, knocking some sense into himself. That's how Andross got Star Wolf to work for him. He couldn't be too careful with this kind of thinking. He was a mercenary, but morals came first.

He literally could've been anywhere else, doing literally anything else. He could be doing chores around his house. He could be eating a meal. He could be out jogging in the wonderful weather, getting some fresh air. He could be napping. But here he was.

Here you are.

Fox yawned. His eyes were beginning to water, the lids feeling droopy. The hum of the engine and the gentle vibration in his seat were beginning to put him to sleep. With nothing else to do, he might as well get some shut eye. The road looked perfectly straight. As long as he set the Landmaster on a correct path, it wouldn't run off the street, right? No cars coming, no cars about to overtake him. He might as well give it a shot.

Setting the tank in cruise mode, he locked it into its present course. He took his hands off the steering wheel and reclined the seat back, folding his arms and settling into it. He kept one eye open for a bit, making sure everything was alright… then closed it.

The engine hummed a lullaby.

The seat rocked him like a cradle.

The warm air felt like heaven.

…But just to be safe, he popped an eye open again.

The Landmaster had driven into the oncoming lane.

Panicking, he grabbed the wheel and swung the tank back onto the right side of the faded yellow line. The drowsiness momentarily vanished from his mind, replaced by a spike of adrenaline. He realized what had happened: while he was trying to sleep, the Landmaster must have drifted off course. Had he just misaligned it? Accidentally tapped the steering wheel? Did the fault lie in the tank, or had the road actually shifted?

Putting it to the test, Fox realigned the tank and let go of the wheel again. This time he kept his eyes peeled, keeping track of the compass and the road.

Sure enough, the Landmaster began to list to the left again, with the compass indicating it was a fault in the machine—not the road changing slightly.

He released an exasperated sigh. Well that was disheartening. Something in the tank's treads or steering mechanism was wrong. He wouldn't know—Slippy was the mechanic, after all. But it meant without Slippy, he wouldn't be able to just pull over along the infinite shoulder and fix the issue himself. No, it meant he'd have to continue on for the whole eight hours, constantly nudging the tank to the right every few minutes. He couldn't just sleep through the rest of the journey. He had to stay awake the whole time.

Wait, the autopilot feature he had Slippy install!

He navigated through the menu screen, but when he tapped on the mode a big ad opened up instead.

"What? It's a premium feature?!"

Sure enough, Fox found he'd have to pay a monthly subscription to unlock the autopilot. He'd have to shell out a hefty sum each month—a luxury he couldn't afford, nor justify for a vehicle he had only found convenient to use twice before. As he looked through the autopilot features, he discovered they were installed on the unit already: the AI could trace the road, determine the speed limit, follow traffic signs, and identify pedestrians crossing the street; but to actually react to any of that he'd have to upgrade to premium.

He shook his fist at the sky.

"Curse you Elon Muskrat!"

Fox drove for many more miles, bent low over the wheel and scowling darkly. Whenever the Landmaster began to drift slightly left, he tapped the steering wheel, bringing it to bear straight ahead again.

Boy was it getting monotonous, though.

"Screw it!" he exclaimed. "It's not like any other cars are taking this god-forsaken road."

He let go of the wheel and leaned back, folding his arms behind his head. If he wanted to, he could probably get away with driving in the middle of the road the whole way there. Even if another car came (however unlikely), he could justify taking up both lanes due to the Landmaster's size. He needed both lanes; it was hard enough fitting into just one. And besides, his current package was very important. He was a military vehicle! He didn't have to obey traffic laws.

As soon as he talked himself into it, however, a tiny dot appeared on the horizon.

He squinted.

It was green.

The dot grew bigger and bigger, till it took the shape of a car rapidly approaching.

Fox shot up, grabbed the wheel, and yanked the Landmaster back into its own lane.

He was just in the nick of time, too; the green car shot past, the driver opening his window to give him an unmistakable hand gesture.

Frazzled, Fox gripped the wheel with white knuckles.

Whew, that was close. He'd almost flattened a pedestrian due to his carelessness.

…But what were the odds he'd see another car immediately after?

Shrugging, Fox let the Landmaster drift between the lanes again… only for a second car to come careening towards him, driver's middle finger already extended. Once again he jerked the tank back into its lane, narrowly missing a second collision.

Might as well hit up the lottery at this point.

Surely it wouldn't happen a third time, would it? The odds for something like that to happen would be astronomical, considering he'd never even seen another car until now.

But another part of him knew it was somehow inevitable.

Interested in testing his theory, Fox took his fingers off the steering wheel—but only barely, hovering them an inch.

He squinted, noticing an odd smudge on the horizon.

He replaced his hands, grabbing the wheel again.

That's funny… the smudge vanished. Maybe he'd just imagined it.

He lifted his hands again.

The speck returned; almost like a mirage, or a trick of the eye. This time he folded his hands in his lap.

The splotch grew bigger and bigger, resolving into a—

He grabbed the wheel a third time, and it vanished. He blinked. It was like it had never been there.

The next time he released the wheel, he folded his arms and leaned back all the way.

As each time before, the speck returned, growing until it was definitely a car.

He replaced his hands, but it was too close this time. He had to hurriedly twist the wheel to avoid hitting it, middle finger and all.

"Okay, someone out there really hates me!" he spat.

After what felt like another hour of driving, he couldn't help but glance down.

"Grrrrrrr…"

It was like waiting for toast to pop. A really, really big piece of toast that had to be cooked for eight hours. A piece of toast cooked in a toaster that kept having to be turned back on every few minutes because it inexplicably shut itself off. Because fuck you!

Like a kettle boiling water, or a game installation screen; if you watched it, it'd never finish, just seem longer. And Fox kept habitually checking the progress bar more than he used to check his Doogiecoin investment before giving up on it entirely.

Unless, there was a way to speed up the toast…

Breaking the monotony of the endless road, a rare speed limit sign passed, displaying 85 MPH.

He looked ahead.

No cars in sight, as usual.

He checked the rearview screen.

None behind him, either

No one would be the wiser.

"Eh, what the heck. It's not like anyone's watching."

Fox pushed his foot down on the gas—hard. The Landmaster leaped forward, then quickly accelerated. Soon its speed matched that of a Corneria City bullet train, the lines and specks on the street blurring together like stars in hyperspace.

He pumped his fist. "Alright! Now this is progress!"

Fox's ear twitched, for above the low hum of the tank's motor rose a wailing siren, steadily growing louder. Looking in the rear view screen, he saw red and blue flashing lights atop a police car, itself keeping pace with the Landmaster and stirring up its own cloud of dust behind it.

The todd's shoulders drooped. "I shoulda known."

He pulled the tank over to the side of the road and shut off the engine. It was relieving to hear complete silence again, and his ears relaxed. But the lack of sound left an odd vacuum. It was quiet; too quiet. The noise had been just another mask to hide the true emptiness of the desert.

Fox leaned against the steering wheel, drumming his fingers and waiting patiently. Boy this would be embarrassing to explain, and the last thing he needed was a ticket to pay—on top of every other expense he couldn't afford.

A fist tapped on the glass, and Fox looked up to see the officer. It was…

"Scarlet?"

Staring back at him with just as surprised an expression was a red-furred vixen. She wore a blue policeman's outfit—one that was a little too tight around the hips and much too tight around the bust.

Hurriedly Fox popped the canopy.

"Scars, what are you doing here?!"

She gestured to the tank. "Nevermind me—what are you doing here?"

He shrugged. "Mercenary stuff. It's just, you know, the odds of us meeting out in the middle of nowhere are incredibly unlikely! How'd you even find me?"

She gestured over her shoulder with a thumb. "Department setup a speed trap back there. You blew right through it Mister, stop sign and all. Oh, and it doesn't help that you backed up again to look at the stop sign once you'd already blitzed past it. What does that even accomplish?"

He chuckled nervously. "Guess I blinked and missed it the first time," he admitted. He looked down at her attire again, shaking his head. "Well-well-well, never guessed you'd be a cop. How patriotic of you. What is this, your next kink of the week?"

She pouted. "I thought I'd make a clean living for once. Not my fault they gave me a uniform that was several sizes too small."

"Uh-huh."

Seeing as she would never convince him otherwise, Scarlet decided to change the subject. She rested her arms on the cockpit lip and leaned in. "Well, what's the emergency? Fire? Wedding?"

"Well, I came here to—" but he cut himself off, thinking better of it. "Um, it's a strictly confidential assignment."

She grinned at him smugly. "Uh-huh, sure. Just like the last mission you instantly blabbed everything about when you met a random vixen in a taxi. I guess this mission is just more confidential than nuclear weapons, is that it?"

"Well no, maybe I just thought better of it?"

Scarlet sighed and pulled out a pen and notepad, scribbling on it.

Fox rose up in his seat, trying to see what she was writing. "Hey, uh… you're not gonna charge me with anything, are you?"

The vixen rolled her eyes, pausing to place her hands on her hips. "What, you think just because you were Lylat's big hero once that means the laws don't apply to you, huh? You think you're special, is that it? Well I got news for you: you still have to play by the same rules as the rest of us. Why if General Pepper himself sped past that stop sign, it'd be my duty to arrest him, and you can be sure as hell I'd do it."

She returned to filling out the form.

"Aww, come on now, Scars! You wouldn't give a ticket to your own cousin, would you?" He clasped his hands and fixed her with big puppy dog eyes, summoning a halo over his head from sheer innocence.

"There you go again, acknowledging we're family only when it's convenient for you!" she complained. "But as soon as you want to fuck we're not even related."

He lay his paw over hers, staring at her with bedroom eyes now. "I must confess Scarlet, earlier when you asked if it was a fire or wedding, it was… both. You lit a fire in my heart, and I can hear wedding bells chiming off in the distance… I knew you set that trap, but I sped right on through it; it was the only way I could get you to chase after me again, like the old days."

Scarlet jerked her hand out of his grasp. "Now-now Fox, you had your chance, and you blew it. Any of that mushy stuff between us is just history now."

Fox dropped his charming persona and just had out with it. "Listen, if you don't give me the ticket, I can #$%& your #$%&."

She bit her lip for a second, staring him up and down.

"Just a quickie. You. Me. No one else for miles."

"Mmmmmmmmm nah. It's more amusing giving you the ticket."

"It'd be more amusing to do it and still give me the ticket afterwards, if you think about it."

"I'd love to, but I really gotta get back to watching that speed trap. Can't leave it unattended too long, you know."

"You know you want to…" he said in a sing-song voice.

"I oughta tell ya, it's dangerous standing around here in one place. Electricity builds up real easy unless you keep moving, then before you know it, BAM! Lightning strike from the ion storm. It'd be really embarrassing if you and I were found roasted together in the tank while we were, you know..."

"Yeah, but what a way to go, right?"

"I dunno, this whole thing's kinda creepy. I mean, you didn't even get permission to use me in this fic."

He raised an eyebrow. "I never get permission to use you in my fics."

"Still, it'd be kinda inappropriate to just borrow me without asking and then—"

"Scars?"

"—Yeah?"

"Just give me the goddamn ticket."

After some intense scribbling, Scarlet tore off the paper and handed it to Fox.

"See you at the family reunion!" she waved, hopping down from the tank's hull.

"Don't count on it…" he grumbled.

While Scarlet was walking back to her car, she shivered suddenly.

"…Oh my! That felt… strangely scintillating!" she exclaimed.

Face contorting in worry, Fox quickly gunned the engine and drove off—before she decided to handcuff him and bring him in for… 'further interrogation'.

But the saddest part was the progress indicator had only increased to...

By the side of the road up ahead, Fox saw what looked like a cemetery. This time he had enough foresight to jam on the breaks, bringing the Landmaster to a screeching halt ahead of time. The tank stopped right beside the fenced-in plot of land. Sure enough, it was a cemetery—and recently constructed, too. Some of the graves seemed freshly dug; a couple looked like they had been plotted yesterday, while the oldest couldn't have been more than a few years prior.

Out of sheer boredom he decided to get out and have a look. Why were the graves so fresh? Who was there around here to bury? Unless they contained the metaphorical highway accidents of time itself...

The sun was beginning to set when the Landmaster rolled into Chogun's dusty streets. A blood red sky covered the horizon, and the shadows of the rundown buildings stretched long and black over the ruddy sands.

Fox couldn't believe it. He'd finally arrived, after hours upon hours of mind-numbing, uneventful travel. But he'd done it. He'd persevered, and he'd accomplished his task. Just a few more steps, and it'd be over...

He lifted the canopy to the Landmaster and tried to stand up, but he found his ass glued to the seat. Gritting his teeth, he placed his hands on the armrests and pushed up. Finally, after no small effort, he was able to tear himself off of the seat, regardless of how hard his sweat-soaked shorts clung to it. Then, reaching under the seat, he grabbed the package and exited the vehicle.

Chogun's civilian residents watched him from afar, peering through windows and cracked doors. Of what little he could see of their faces, they looked apprehensive and dour. None spoke a word, and once he silenced the Landmaster's engine not a sound could be heard, barring the lonely wind whistling between the rundown porches and dried bushes.

A solitary figure came to meet him; an old, weather-beaten Cornerian general by the looks of him.

"You McCloud?" he croaked in a voice that sounded like a dry breeze brushing over gravel.

"Yes sir."

"Got the package?"

Fox looked down at the large cardboard box in his arms.

"No, no I don't."

They stared each other down for a minute, with Fox wondering if he should've made that joke or not. The longer the awkward silence stretched on, the more he felt like he shouldn't have.

"Give it here," the general said, holding out his hands.

Fox did as he was told, approaching the general and placing the box in his arms... but he didn't let go. He couldn't bring himself to let it go. For some reason he felt attached to that box. He'd spent hours protecting it, driving it around the desert, and resisting the urge to open it. Now he felt like he'd miss it.

Ultimately, however, he did let go.

"Thankee," the general said. "General Gables will see that yer paid."

He blinked. "You mean... I have to drive all the way back to Sima?! Over that same god-forsaken road again?!"

The general stared at him blankly. "Yeeeeeeep. Gables didn't explain that to ya?"

Fox fell to his knees, watching the general turn and walk away with the package, still not knowing its contents. It was his last chance to see what was inside; to rush after him, rip the box from his arms, and tear it open. If he didn't, he'd have to drive all the way back wondering what was inside it, the knowledge that he'd given up his only chance to see weighing on him the entire way.

He could leave now and respect the general's wishes... or give in and see what was inside that damn box.

The choice was his.
