Chapter 2, enjoy!
Thank you all for the reviews/favs/follows it all means so much! Coming from a less popular fandom it was crazy to get that much attention within an hour of posting!
"The M.E. completed the autopsy and ruled the cause of death blunt force trauma to the head. There were signs of sexual assault and she had traces of Rohypnol in her blood," Kevin reported after walking up the steps to the bullpen from his trip to the medical examiner's office. A lump formed in Hailey's throat, how could someone do this to her? Jay sent her a reassuring look.
"Has anyone contacted her parents?" Hailey finally gain up the courage to ask, keeping the fact that this girl's dad was her brother to herself.
"Not yet, but I'm getting their info now," Kim responded, viciously typing on her computer. "Looks like mom and dad are separated," Kim announced. They never were together, Hailey thought to herself. "I have an address for both parents-"
"Jay and I will notify her dad," Hailey cut Kim off.
"Kev and I will do mom," Adam added. The two sets of partners made their way to their respective vehicles in the parking lot. Jay got in the driver seat as Hailey slid into the passenger seat.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Jay asked. "It's hard enough doing it when it isn't your family."
"Yeah," She replied. "I need to do this, and I need to help find the person who did this to her."
"You need to tell Voight she's your niece."
"No, you know better than I do that he'll kick me off the case," Hailey shot back.
"Hails..."
"Let's just focus on telling my brother his daughter is dead, and then we can go from there," Hailey suggested. Jay pulled his truck up to the curb in front of Hailey's brother's home. They both exited the truck and made their way to his front door. Hailey took one last deep breath before ringing the doorbell. She finally rang the doorbell. A tall woman with long red hair opened the door.
"Derrick, your sister is here," The woman shouted back into the house. "Good to see you, Hailey! Come inside." Jay and Hailey followed the woman, Hailey's sister-in-law, into their home.
"Hailey!" Derrick greeted. Jay noticed how similar Hailey and Derrick were, and how much their victim resembled Derrick. Derrick was just a few inch shorter than Jay and had dusty blonde hair similar to his daughter and sister's. He smiled as he hugged his sister which revealed dimples exactly like Hailey's. It hurt Jay's heart to think about the fact that they were about to tell him his daughter had been killed.
"Aunt Hey Hey!" Two redheads, not much older than five or six, squealed as they raced down the stairs.
"Hi girls," Hailey greeted with a fake smile to mask her sadness for the visit.
"Girls, why don't you go back up to the playroom and drawl Aunt Hailey a picture?" The redheaded woman suggested, picking up on Hailey's body language.
"Derrick, Sarah, it's good to see you both," Hailey stated with another fake smile. "This is my partner Jay," She introduced as Derrick and Jay shook hands. Hailey decided to leave the fact that she and Jay were now dating unsaid until they were under less sorrowful circumstances. "Derrick, I don't want to dance around why we're here," Hailey started. "I think we should sit down," she suggested as they all four took a seat on Derrick and Sarah Upton's couch. This was a strategy Hailey had learned long ago, you never know how the family of a victim will react. Jay noticed as Hailey became teary eyed, so he sent her a supportive look as to say 'I can do it.'
"My unit got called to a scene this morning where we found Alana's body," Hailey told him before bursting into sobs. Shock and sadness crossed over both Derrick and Sarah's faces. Alana wasn't Sarah's biological daughter, but that didn't cause her to think of her as anything less than a daughter. "I'm so sorry," Hailey added as she choked on her sobs. Hailey's outburst of tears cause Sarah to begin to bawl. Derrick sat there in shock with teary eyes.
"Who did it?" Derrick finally asked. It was a common question from the victim's family.
"We don't know yet. We are in the process of finding out," Jay answered.
"We won't give up until we find out who did it," Hailey promised with teary eyes. Derrick and Hailey got up from their seats and embraced each other in a hug.
"Here is our card, take some time to grieve and then we need you to answer some questions. Take all the time you need, but know that the sooner you can answer those questions, the sooner we can find the person who did this to her," Jay stated as he handed Derrick his business card. Hailey wrapped Sarah up in a comforting hug. She then called the twins down to see their Aunt Hailey.
"Aunt Hey Hey, I drew you a picture!" One of the little redheads excitedly announced as they ran down the stairs once again. They were both sporting huge, bright smiles and were laughing and giggling. They were completely oblivious to the metaphorical bomb Hailey had just dropped on their family. Hailey gave each of the girls a hug and they presented their colorful, childish drawings to their beloved aunt. Hailey and Jay said their good byes and returned to Jay's truck.
"Are you ok?" Jay asked as he started the engine.
"I don't know..." Hailey replied. "It's different when you know the victim. She was my niece, she made me an aunt. We were so close." Jay supportively rubbed her hand as he began to drive back to the district. "Derrick and her mom dated in college, when they had her. Her mom went off the rails after she as born, she ended up using drugs. Derrick took Alana and moved back in with my parents. I was a senior in high school so I helped Derrick raise her. It was the craziest thing, my dad wouldn't hesitate to lay a hand on my mom, my brothers or I, but he never once touched Alana. She was the only reason I would come back for family gathering after I graduated because I knew my dad wouldn't start anything with Alana around. Then her mom got clean and got into a custody battle with Derrick and won. I feel bad because we kind of lost touch after I went to New York and worked with the FBI," Hailey told Jay. She looked down at the floorboard with a sad look in her eye. Her and Alana hadn't talked in over two months and now she's dead.
"I still think you need to tell Voight," Jay finally responded.
"I guess I will," Hailey decided. When they returned to the district, Hailey ventured into Voight's office and pulled the door shut behind her.
"Everything alright Upton?" Hank asked.
"There's something you need to know," Hailey confessed, grabbing all of Voight's attention.
"Ok," He replied leaning back in his office chair.
"Our victim, Alana, is my niece. She is my brother's oldest daughter, but she took her mom's last name," Hailey informed. "Please don't take me off the case, I want to work. I need to work."
"If you can keep your head straight, you can keep working the case."
