The Way You Make Me Feel
Chapter Two
Lena woke up to one of the worst sounds imaginable; the sound of an ECG machine beeping steadily and the feeling of a plastic clothes peg clamped to her finger, reading her vitals. Her mind was quiet though so that was good. Glancing around the room she was in, Lena realized that she was not in the DEO med bay but in a hospital room. A private hospital room that she assumed she had Jess to thank for and once again Alex Danvers was in the room with her.
Slowly she turned her head and took in the room seeing the darkened windows and the state Alex was in, she took it to be late at night. Alex was sitting uncomfortably on the single chair in the room, her legs pulled up to her chest and her chin resting on her knee fast asleep, it amazed Lena how small the woman could make herself, she was pretty sure that she didn't possess that level of dexterity.
Lena stared at the sleeping Agent and for now the only friend she was certain wasn't out to get her and couldn't resist her curiosity. She had conducted multiple tests over the course of the few days that she had had these powers but hadn't had the opportunity to try to test it out on a sleeping subject. Lena mentally set her parameters, accepting that while this was a gross invasion of someone's privacy she would not abuse her ability and stay away from deep and private thoughts. Only surface level stuff.
Centering herself and feeling her telepathic ability light up despite the incident with Kara, Lena slowly pushed herself into Alex's mind, expecting to hear thoughts again, only for her to be assaulted with images as the room she was laying in faded from view and she was suddenly in a room that could be something straight out of a teenagers room in a sitcom. There was a full wall poster of Linda Hamilton from Terminator 2 on the far wall across from the bed in a tank top, aviators and ponytail sitting in a badass pose, cigarette in mouth loading up a machine gun.
Looking around seeing the lack of cosmetics on the dresser and a very muted decor of the entire room and stacks of VHSs ranging from teen comedys like Ferris Beulers Day Off and The BreakFast Club to hardcore action SciFi and horror movies like Alien, A Nightmare on Elm Street and of course, Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
Realizing quickly that she must be in Alex's room back when she was a teen, especially with the view outside not obstructed by buildings, she had only a moment to wonder why Alex was dreaming of her younger years only for her vision to blurr and she was traveling out of the door, down the stairs and out the back door of what must be Alex and Kara's childhood home.
The scene she walked onto was arresting and Lena couldn't help but gasp, but the people in front of her didn't pay her any mind. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Alex as a teen walk up to the three people gathered and Lena realized that Alex's dream had suddenly switched perspectives. Now she was observing the upcoming interaction a little impersonally which told Lena that Alex didn't like what was about to happen.
Lena herself could barely believe what she was witnessing as she watched a very familiar figure walking alongside two people, one of whom she recognized as a younger Eliza Danvers and next to her, Lena was sure, was her husband Jeremiah.
The figure that she recognized was of course Superman, Kal-El as Lex called him, dressed in the garish bright blue and red that Lena always found a little too bright as opposed to Supergirls more muted colors. Speaking of Supergirl, the lost looking adolescent walking along in Kal's wake watching the three adults talk and clearly not recognizing a word they were saying was so obviously Kara.
With a thud to her heart Lena recognized what this must be. This was the moment when Kara came to live with the Danvers. She had always wondered, ever since she found out who Supergirl was, how she became part of the Danvers household, more than a couple of times speculating that the entire thing might have been a cover set up by the DEO.
Lena's heart literally broke for the young Kryptonian who was staring up at Kal with tears in her eyes as he completely ignored her and decided on her fate without once consulting her on her opinion.
Lena glanced to Alex across the yard, knowing that in times of need Alex Danvers was the one woman you could count to always be in Supergirls corner but she was surprised by the look Alex was sporting, even in her heart she could feel Alex's emotions and they were not sisterly like she had felt back in Kara's apartment towards her, instead she detected envy and anger, because obviously Alex understood what Kal, Eliza and Jeremiah were saying and she wasn't liking a single word of it.
Not even a minute later she saw Kal look down at Kara, speak something in what must have been Kryptonian but a stuttering version of it that seemed to confuse Kara even more. And then the asshole was flying away, leaving this poor girl, who had lost her whole world and was in a new place, without anyone from her world, to adjust to a new place and a new family. Just like that.
Lena watched in anguish as Kara stared up at the sky where Kal disappeared to, her eyes telling a novels worth of stories, the pain palpable.
She watched as Kara flinched away as Eliza knelt down and spoke to her and saw Eliza drop her voice to a near whisper just so Kara wouldn't feel pain at the loud voice that she could hear with her suddenly enhanced senses.
Eventually Kara seemed to accept her new reality and looked at Eliza understanding that she meant no harm, then she looked to where she was pointing and spotted a reluctant and, dare she say petulant Alex standing there.
Lena heard the word Sister as did Kara and she watched as Alex turned her nose up at the term and Kara scrunch up hers in confusion. Eliza and Jeremiah seemed to consult a book that Kal had left them for a moment before speaking a word in hesitant Kryptonian and pointing back at a still obstinate Alex who Lena did feel bad for a little since it looked like she wasn't consulted at all about this new addition to their family.
When the word finally registered Kara gave a hesitant smile at Eliza which lifted Lena's heart but when Kara turned that smile towards Alex all she met was a slammed door. The dream dissolved as Kara's smile dropped with her head as she slowly walked into the Danvers house after Eliza and Jeremiah and for once Lena was glad that in the dream she could not feel what Kara was feeling.
Alex didn't wake up. There were flashes of events, she saw Kara and her grow up and slowly grow tolerant than dependent on each other, the bond that she recognized as one of the strongest she knew slowly forming in moments of significant events.
She saw Kara lift a wing of falling plane through a window from inside the plane, Kara wasn't in her supersuit. She saw Kara and Alex fight over Kara revealing herself to the world.
She saw Kara's face drop as she realized that Alex had been lying to her about what she did and where she worked.
She saw Kara and someone with Kara's powers fight on a screen and watched as this woman almost beat Kara, reminiscent to Kara and Reigns fight a few years ago.
She saw Alex and Kara talk about Astra and realized that the woman that almost beat Kara was her aunt.
She saw Alex watch as Astra and J'onn fight and she watched in horror as Alex pushed a sword in Kara's Aunts back.
She saw Alex watch as J'onn took the blame for killing Astra and Kara be angry at him until Alex revealed that it was her. She watched confused as Kara immediately forgave Alex when she wasn't ready to forgive J'onn ever for commiting the same act.
She watched as DEO Agents including Alex clutch their heads in agony as Kara made a decision and said a heartaching goodbye and handed her the necklace her mother had given her when she was sent from Krypton.
She watched on a screen as Kara lifted a ten thousand tonne prison and flew it to space but didn't return back.
She watched as Alex opened the cockpit to Kara's Pod and launched herself after her sister. She watched with a deep sense of loss as Kara floated in front of her, unmoving, freezing in the cold of space. Lifeless. And then Alex was there.
The flashes of dreams dissolved and Lena had to take a breath, trying to deal with information and emotion overload.
But Alex still wasn't done dreaming. The scene she came into confused her. Alex and Kara were sitting next to each other, it looked like Sister Night and Kara seemed down as was Alex.
"... you know she will hate Supergirl now, right?" Alex was asking, only for Kara to look at her with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"I do. But it will be worth it, I'd rather Lena hate me than end up dead because of me."
Alex shook her head. "I know I was hard on Lena before Kara, but I think you should tell her," she said imploringly and Lena felt a dozen times lighter at the revelation that Alex eventually wanted her to know.
Kara on the other hand shook her head. "I can't tell her now, not when she needs protecting the most, especially if she's going to be making Kryptonite." the resentful tone she expected Kara to say those last few words was missing.
"I still don't understand why you blew up at her about the Kryptonite," Alex admitted and Lena wanted to kiss her, platonically of course.
Kara sighed. "It was for her protection," at Alex's disbelieving look that mirrored her own mixed with some scorn, Kara elaborated. "You know I believe it when you and Lena say that you don't need protection, but sometimes I don't think you understand how impossible I find that concept to be."
At Alex's affronted look Kara smiled and gently took Alex's hand in her own and brought it into her lap. "Do you know how many calculations I have to do in my head, just to execute this simple action and not simply rip off your arm or crush yor bones?" she asked softly as she carresed Alex's hand.
Alex shook her head at the rhetorical question. "This entire planet is basically a dollhouse to me. A dollhouse where the people are made of marshmallows and the walls are made of tissue paper." Alex's eyes rose to meets Kara's in slight understanding. "Do you know that I have to force myself to go asleep every night?" she asked, once again rhetorically. "To you four walls and a locked door are signs of safety and security, to me its like living in a room with shower curtains for walls and no lock can really hold most of my enemies back."
"So as much as I believe in your ability to survive and fight, to me humans are so fragile that I have to fight myself to not just wrap up all my loved ones and put them somewhere where nobody can hurt them. So while it might be true that you can protect yourselves from most threats, the truth is that even in the best scenarios you cannot protect yourselves from me and most of the enemies that I fight are stronger or as strong as me so I hope you can understand why I have to fight hard to accept that you can defend yourselves when needed."
Alex seems to contemplate that for a moment before nodding. "I guess I can understand that but it still doesn't explain your fight with Lena."
Kara seemed to hang her head before speaking. "Alex she's a Luthor." and Lena almost launched herself at Kara. Of course it was because of who she was, just like she suspected, she was so ready to get out of this dream, even if she did feel bad about what Kara went through all those years ago. But the dream didn't seem to want her to let go.
"Kara, you of all people…" came back Alex, surprisingly rising to Lena's defence.
"You didn't let me finish," Kara replied with a fond smile. "I couldn't give one whit about who her family is or has done, my aunt and uncle tried to take over Earth. My dad created the Medusa virus and may have had a hand in creating Reign, so you don't have to tell me not judge Lena by her family's actions. I'm the one who has been championing her to you guys all this time remember?" she asked Alex gently who nodded her head with a blush at the soft reprimand.
"Anyway because she's a Luthor who helps out at the DEO so much I was horrified at the prospect of her creating Krytonite, not because of what it could do to me, even if I did say that to her. But because of what it might do to her. Because I might work with the DEO but I know that they don't answer to you or J'onn and the minute they discover that A Luthor can create Krytonite, I only saw two scenarios playing out and both ending up worse for Lena. One where they feel threatened by a Luthor creating Kryptonite and launch a campaign to vilify her, labeling Lena as the next Lex and destroying everything that she has worked for ever since she helped put Lex away. Or they would want Lena to work with them to control me and Kal."
As Alex's went to protest Kara shook her head.
"Alex you know as well as I that the highers ups only work with me because I give them no other option. They have no means of controlling me but if they could then they want me fighting their wars for them not stopping bank robberies. Lane proved that with his stunt with the Red Tornado. You don't think that if the people who sign your paycheck found out that Lena could and has created Kryptonite that they wouldn't leap at a chance to try and leverage her to make more? To help control Kal and me? You don't think that they would try and force her to work with them when she rejects their offers? You don't think they wouldn't stoop low enough to disregard Lena's wishes and possibly harm her or her close friends or even family to get what they want. Because I do. I might act optimistic all the time Alex but I've already lost one world. I'm not prepared to lose another and if the price of that is Lena hating me, then I'd pay it every single time… "
The dream dissolved and Lena woke up to find Alex looking at her from the chair. Her feet were back on the floor and she was looking at Lena cautiously.
Lena blinked out the last vestiges of the dream from her vision and looked back at Alex.
"What?" she asked the redhead who bit her lip before steeling herself and getting up.
"Your eyes were glowing purple," she said as she walked over to her, a hand reaching down to her ever present holster as Lena cursed her new found powers for betraying her. "So I need you to confirm that you are Lena Luthor before I put a bullet through your fucking head!" Alex ordered in calm voice as she smoothly pulled out her Alien gun and aimed it right between Lena's eyes.
Fuck.
Tell me how it was! Cheers!!
