Pokémon Crimson Gold

Chapter 2: An introduction to battling

Ethan and Lyra left the lab together, off to go find a wild Pokémon. Many school kids eyed them down, making ooh noises. "I hope no one gets the wrong idea, I'm only just demonstrating to you."

"You made that clear Lyra." Ethan said, walking behind her, with his Chikorita following shortly behind. "You know, if you want, you can just go, I don't need your help."

They wandered into the tall grass, shortly outside of New Bark Town. "Nope, can't let the Professor down, listen Ethan, you might not like it, but as a senior Trainer, you have to look up to me." She lectured him.

"Don't get so cocky, I'm older than you, and your new to this too, you're only now leaving to go on your own journey, even though you had your Trainer Card for a year." Ethan told the Brunette now annoyed.

"Fair enough, let's just get this over with so we can both go our separate ways." She told Ethan.

"Fine by me," Ethan said, picking his ear.

A few minutes later, the two heard a rattling in the bushes. It was a definite wild Pokémon.

"You hear that," Ethan told Lyra. "It's got to be it!"

"Good, it's good to recognize when a wild Pokémon's about. Good ears Ethan." She complimented him. "Next part's going to be a lot tougher, so pay attention."

She pulled out her Pokéball and threw it in the direction of the wild Pokémon. Out came her Marill, it was blue, round and adorable.

"Oh, so I was right, it is just your Marill!" Ethan laughed.

"Just shut up and watch!" She yelled at him. "Whoever the Pokémon is, it will be my first wild catch!"

Out from the rustling grass, came a feathered owl-like Pokémon. It was a Hoothoot, Lyra's eyes glistened at this.

"Awesome, alright Marill, let's do this!" She exclaimed excitedly.

"Marill!" Marill responded.

The Hoothoot looked angry, it must have been trying to get some sleep, and was awoke by the noise.

"Chika," Chikorita said, wanting to step in.

"Don't worry Chikorita, we'll get out opportunity to battle soon enough." He reassured his starter.

Hoothoot, came dashing at full speed, wings spread out as far as it could.

"Tackle huh, Marill dodge it accordingly, then use Aqua Tail.

Marill managed to dodge the foe's tackle, Hoothoot knocked itself on the ground hard.

Maril spun around after dodging the hit, a water like seal wrapped around its tail, with a swift turn, it smacked its tail into Hoothoot, launching it even farther back.

Hoothoot rolled over, recovering albeit slowly. It was clear it stood no chance in comparison to Lyra's Marill.

"Now Marill, bubble beam!" Lyra commanded.

Marill's bubble beam launched into Hoothoot making it crash back to the ground.

She's good, Ethan couldn't help but note.

"Now's the time you throw your Pokéball. We could damage it more, but this is good enough." Lyra made clear.

Hoothoot struggled to get back on its feet, it was clear Lyra had won this battle.

Lyra threw her Pokéball, it hit the Hoothoot on the head, and with that, the bird Pokémon was transferred inside the Pokéball.

"Woah, alright, hopefully it's not a dud." Ethan said.

"It's not, watch." Lyra said. Her eyes sparkling with excitement.

The Pokéball shook, filling the two kids with suspense.

"Come on, come on, come on." Ethan said,

The Pokéball stopped shaking; the ball had successfully caught the Hoothoot.

"Good job, Lyra." Ethan told her. "Got me pumped to catch a Pokémon of my own."

Chikorita jumped up cheerfully.

"Good job, Marill, you're amazing." Lyra said, kneeling to pet her Pokémon.

"Hey, so what do you say we have that battle you were talking about earlier." Ethan suggested.

"Chika Chika!" Chikorita jolly fully remarked.

"No way, you only just got it. Don't forget, I've had this Marill ever since I was a little kid. Type advantage alone won't be enough for you to pull a win here." Lyra explained to Ethan.

"It's not just type advantage, me and Chikorita are partners, this is the next step to becoming a Pokémon Master," Ethan replied.

"Well fine, you're on, maybe humbling you wouldn't be so bad, would it now?" Lyra said, Marill once again got ready to battle.

"Marill huh," Ethan said, preparing his Pokéball to scan Marill down.

"Marill, the Aqua Mouse Pokémon. The tip of its tail, which contains oil that is lighter than water, lets it swim without drowning." Scanned Ethan's Pokédex.

"Cool, what is that thing?" Lyra asked, in awe.

"Don't worry about it, you should be concerned over what nearest Pokémon center is there." Ethan said, confident in his Chikorita's abilities.

"Just drop that stupid smirk from your face Ethan. You always acted like you were the best in class, that you were the upcoming champion. But then you go and flunk the graduation." Lyra said, cracking down on him. "You act like you're Mr. Big Shot, when you're really nothing, nothing compared to that dad of yours."

Ethan didn't expect her to go that far, even Chikorita was angered now.

"You shouldn't have said that." Ethan said, not playing around. "Alright Chikorita! Let's win this, start with tackle!"

Chikorita charged with all her might towards Marill, it was enough to surprise both Marill and even Lyra.

"Marill! Use quick attack and strike first!" Lyra commanded.

In a quick blitz, Marill out sped Chikorita, striking the Leaf Pokémon first, causing her to be knocked back.

"Chikorita, use razor leaf and strike Marill down!" Ethan yelled.

Chikorita swung its long leaf, sending tons of miniature blades of leaves towards Marill. Fortunately, Marill was able to dodge it, even without Lyra's command.

"Now, Marill, bubble beam, quick!" Lyra said.

Although it wasn't very effective, the level gap between Chikorita and Marill was clear, and Chikorita was easily strike with the bubbles. It took a while for Chikorita to recover after that last hit, but it was still prepared to continue.

"You okay, Chikorita? If you are, use tackle once again." Ethan told it.

Chikorita charged once again, trying to land a hit on the foe's Marill.

"Alright, I don't want to hurt your Chikorita too badly after all, it is on its last legs. So, we'll end this gently. Marill, time for attract!"

Marill blushed and winked towards Chikorita, sending real sized pink hearts towards it. However, the hearts barely even scuffed dirt on the charging Chikorita. Chikorita, ran past this, and slammed Marill down with a tackle.

"Oh man! I had no clue Chikorita was a girl!?" Lyra said surprised.

Wow, Chikorita's really a girl, and I had no idea? Ethan realized.

"Chikorita! Now use Solar Beam, t-that is a move you know right." Ethan asked, hoping for the best.

Chikorita stopped in motion, she had no clue what kind of move her trainer was talking about, so instead she randomly used Poison Powder, which sent a gas that almost hit Marill, but Marill managed to dodge in time.

"Marill, now finish her with quick attack, once again. Marill used her swift speed to dance around the Chikorita, who couldn't keep up, although Marill was much less of a heavy hitter, she was much faster.

And boom, Marill dashed once again into Chikorita, sending her flying back. And just like that, Chikorita was defeated.

"Chikorita!" Ethan yelled as he came by his Pokémon's side. He stood by her and helped her up. "That was really awesome Chikorita, I'm so happy I choose you as my starter."

"Chika," She happily exclaimed, even after losing, she still managed to get back up.

"See what I mean, you shouldn't have picked fights with me, not yet at least. Now you'll have to live with the fact that you lost your first battle with me for the rest of your life!" Lyra boasted. "You're still a failure, Ethan!"

Ethan, despite losing wasn't sad, he was used to failure, however he would not fail Chikorita. He held his starter in his arms.

"Chikorita, I promise I won't fail you; I just know we'll become an excellent pair. A trainer and his Pokémon young trainers will be inspired by, I swear." Ethan said, smiling.

"That's nice, focus on that, get stronger, we can fight again when your more prepared. Well, if that's all, I think I'll head, I'll be heading to Violet city, and past it for my first gym battle." She said, setting out along with her Marill. "Later."

"Awe, just had your first battle, did you?" Said Professor Elm, who had startled Ethan.

"Oh, hey Professor. Yeah, and Chikorita got hurt, I need a Pokémon center.

"There's one in Cherrygrove, you should go there, get Chikorita healed up some." Elm suggested. "But while, your there, could you do me a favor."

"Well, I guess, what is it?" Ethan asked.

"I have this friend that lives outside Cherrygrove city, he keeps raveling about his discoveries and wants me to look at one of his more recent ones, his house is straight north past Cherrygrove, can't miss it."

"Alright, I'll be back in a sec," Ethan said, Chikorita in hands as he prepared to head off. "Thanks again, Professor, for the Pokémon."

Hey hey, time for some words from the author, in case some are annoyed I decided to give Ethan Chikorita for three reasons. Firstly, the obvious choice Cyndaquil is most often given to him in official media and fanfics so I got to switch it up a bit, two, Chikorita has the worst type match ups against the Gym leaders, so I figure it would make things less easy for him and you guys would have to see more of Ethan's mind in battle more, and three, most importantly, Chikorita is my favorite of the three, so yeah, hope you guys enjoy it.
