He burst through the door, the staff immediately provided a bed. "We've got a bleeder! I'm taking him to the O.R now!" He informed everyone as he put on a latex glove on one hand and he slightly straddled Blaine's legs on the bed and shoved a piece of a hemostatic agent inside the injury, holding his heart together.
When they arrived, the nurse quickly placed a latex glove on his free hand. "Okay hook him to machines-" The nurses were about halfway done putting on his surgical gown when the O.R went dark. Kurt looked around the barely lit O.R.
"What's going on?" Kurt asked.
"The power went out."
"Yeah, no shit Sherlock-"
"Hey be nice." Came a voice. Kurt looked down and saw Blaine playfully glaring at him. "Put that glare away, I am literally holding your heart together here!" Kurt said and Blaine just smiled at him.
Kurt looked up, earning some weird looks from the nurses and attendees. "What I meant is that why is the generator still not up and running, we can't operate like this."
"No monitor, no suction." A resident provided.
"No cautery." Kurt finished with a sigh.
"But you still have me right?" Kurt looked down once again and nodded with a smile.
"Oh yeah, holding firm."
"Wait." Blaine said, slightly panicking. "I haven't heard from my baby girl, where's my baby girl!"
"Okay, okay woah, I'll try to get information about her okay?" Kurt asked softly. Blaine nodded and slumped on the bed. "Duke, would you please try to find Dr. Fabray and ask how Mr. Anderson's baby is doing?" Dr. Duke nodded and left the O.R. Then the door opened, Dr. Sharpe poking her head out. "Hummel."
"It's all good Dr. Sharpe. I'm, uh, holding Blaine's heart together with my fingers. But without power we've got no cardiopulmonary bypass."
"No way to titrate amnesia." One nurse piped up and Kurt nodded in agreement.
"We can't operate without them." Kurt continued.
"Max is working on the generator."
"Alright." Kurt said with a nod. Dr. Sharp then asked how he was and Kurt returned his attention to Blaine. "You know... eh." Blaine's response made Kurt laugh and he beamed at Kurt. Dr. Sharp looked between Kurt and Blaine before she left.
After a few minutes, still without power Kurt was getting more agitated and impatient. Blaine would then place a gentle hand of his arm. Dr. Duke then came back, Kurt hoping and praying he came to bring good news.
"She has a serious case of hypothermia but the baby is fine-" Kurt let out a breath of relief. "-but she only had at least 10 minutes of warming via machine before the power went out. Now Dr. Fabray and the rest are improvising on making them warm." Kurt nodded and Blaine looked slightly relieved. After a few minutes, still with out power a voice made Kurt heart plummet to his stomach.
"His blood pressure's drop down to 90 over 60." A nurses informed him. Kurt straitened up. "Hang in there Blaine."
"Is that a fence joke?" Blaine tried to joke but for the first time Kurt didn't laugh. "Okay, make a list of what your gonna do when you take your daughter home." Kurt said, knowing that would distract him. And it did, Blaine then rambled. Kurt listened with a smile. "Then maybe when it's warmer, we could go stroll through New York, her in my arms."
"Just get a stroller. It'd be easier and convenient." Kurt quipped.
"Good point. You have to help me remember to buy one if I make it."
"You're gonna make it." Kurt knew this was wrong, first thing, never give patients or their families false hope. But he couldn't help it. He saw Blaine grin and he softened. He wasn't so sure why he was so enamored with this man. But just in a short time, he managed to disintegrate Kurt's walls, and no one has ever done that before. "BP's dropped to 82 over 40." A nurse informed. "We have to do something now." The same nurse said.
"Yes! I'm fucking well aware!" Kurt snapped. "Kurt..." Blaine warned him. "Shut up Blaine! I'm trying to think of a way to save your ass over here!"
"I know your stressed but please don't shout." Kurt scowled. "Fuck off Blaine. I just met you a few hours ago, you have no right to tell me what to do and not what to do."
There was a slight pause, the air was filled with tension. "Hypothermic coma." Kurt said. "Lower his body temp to a near freezing and slow his metabolism." The people around nodded and began doing the work.
"Wasn't I freezing outside?" Blaine asked.
"No, no, no this will be controlled. I'm afraid it's our only option."
"Not necessarily." Dr. Calendelario said as she burst through the O.R, in a surgical gown and everything.
"You brought me some power?" Kurt asked with an eyebrow raised.
"No, but we can do his surgery right now."
"With what?"
"We have all the equipment we need here. I worked in far more worse conditions in Afghanistan."
Kurt shook his head in disbelief. Does she actually really think Kurt would allow this? "Dr. Candelario, this is my patient, my O.R." Kurt said firmly. She then approached him. "Your O.R has decent lighting and electricity." Kurt bit his lip, trying to think clearly, he then looked down at Blaine. "What do you think Blaine? Are you okay with us operating you without any power or technology?"
"If I don't, I die right?"
Kurt nodded stiffly. "Okay then, I trust you Kurt." Kurt offered a smile and looked back at Dr. Candelario. "Let's do this then." She nodded and they went straight to work. They already had nurses calculating the needed amnesia. "I've never managed amnesia levels without a monitor before." The nurse said.
Kurt chuckled. "Hold my wine." He then felt vibrations. Blaine was laughing as best as he could. "I think the term is: hold my beer."
Kurt's nose scrunched up in disgust. "I know, but I don't like beer. I like wine." Blaine grinned at him and Kurt returned it.
"Though neither of you learned this techniques I'm medical school, I can assure you they've been practiced for ages." Dr. Candelario said. The amnesia was in and Blaine was now unconscious. Some other doctor closed Blaine's tears from his labour. It seemed to be fine, and he didn't loose that much blood. "You might want to step back." Kurt's eyes widened at the huge mallet and chisel she was holding.
When the metal frames were installed, they then began. After a few minutes, Kurt was still holding his heart together. "Right ventricle's exposed." Dr. Candelario said. "Lung sounds bilateral." A nurse piped up.
"I'm traditional surgery, this is where I'd stop the heart from beating." Kurt said with a sigh.
"But we can't do that." Dr. Candelario retorted.
"No we can't." Kurt shook his head and sighed again.
"But you've been holding the heart for a long time." There was a pause. She slowly lifted his head and looked at Kurt. "Perhaps you've got the rhythm down, right?"
Kurt's jaw dropped. He straightened and shook his head to focus. "You want me to time each suture to the relaxation phase?"
"Exactly."
Kurt nodded. Trying to focus, trying to ignore the fear, and the: What if I mess this up? What if I miss count? What if he dies in my hands? Kurt shook his head and concentrated. He listened and felt the rhythm of the heart. Then it began to slow.
"Time to let go." Dr. Candelario said. Kurt looked up at her, looking back and forth between her and Blaine. "Literally." And hesitantly he did. Dr. Caldelario then took over as Kurt finished to dress in his surgical gown.
"Um, can you slow him down a bit more, Alicia? Give me time to sew?" Kurt asked.
"I'll try." Came a retort. She then ordered 3.0 prolene on a needle drive. When she had it she injected it and Kurt began to work. He pushed through the needle and began closing it shut. Kurt tilted his head. He smiled, though it was hidden behind his mask. "It's not much different actually." He said as he continued sewing. "I mean, it is, but I never realized how much I relied on machines. Doing it old school like this makes me think I might be a better surgeon than I thought." Then he heard a groan. "Oh no, shit, Alicia?"
There was a moan. "What... what are you..? Then Blaine's eyes widened and he began screaming and trashing around
"Alicia get him back under, now!" Then he began to still and his eyes closed. Kurt exhaled. But amongst his trashing around he lost a shit ton of blood. "We need O neg blood."
"There isn't any. We exhausted supply earlier this evening." A nurse said. Kurt swiftly looked up and glared at him. "Then find some! We're not losing him!" The nurses swallowed, he nodded and ran out of the room. Dr. Candelario side eyed him and Kurt ignored her as he continued to work on Blaine.
"Kurt." Kurt turned to her. An eyebrow raised in question. "I think your getting attached with your patient."
Kurt straightened and looked at her, straight in her eyes. "Dr. Candelario, with all due respect, I think it's none of your business, and secondly, this man has a newborn who needs her father, a father who loves her, and if I fail and he dies, I will not only fail him but his daughter as well. She will be thrown into the system, moving from family to family. That is damaging, especially for a little child, believe me I know the the feeling all to well."
She nodded and went silent. After a few minutes there was still no blood. "What the he'll is taking so long?" He asked a nurse.
"I heard they were having problems getting people to donate blood."
A few minutes more there was still no blood. And Kurt was boiling with anger. "Why are people so selfish! They seriously can't spare some blood for a man who has an infant waiting, and bleeding to death!?" The O.R was silent, no one daring to speak or even breath loudly.
They knew Kurt was terrifying when angry, him shouting was a seldom occurrence. Kurt was usually cool headed, he wouldn't raise his voice when he was mad, that alone even made him terrifying. Kurt himself wasn't even sure why he was losing his temper today. A few minutes later a nurse burst through the door, with her was a patient hooked up to a tube.
He smiled. They quickly began transferring the blood. Something caught his eye, he looked up and saw people lined up, tubes attached to them. Kurt smiled, tears beginning to pool around his eyes. Kurt thanked the person and he waited to continue the operation.
When Blaine had enough blood, they continued working. There was still no electricity but they made it work.
"Come on Blaine, just hang in there a bit more longer." Kurt muttered. Then the electricity came back. Kurt squinted to adjust to the brightness of the room. "Okay guys, lets hook him up." Then they continued, Kurt effortlessly stitching. Then they were done.
