By lunch time, Bella was just exhausted. She hated being introduced so many times because it meant that all eyes were on her. She sat down at a table in the cafeteria with her food. She was alone until a bunch of people sat down. They were talking about the dance, and the play. She recognized one of the boys as Eric Yorkie. He was nerdy, Asian, and he talked really fast. He was a fairy. A literal fairy. The girl she recognized was Lydia Branwell. She was a Junior, but taking magical Chem this year, to advance.
Before long, Bella was just sitting there quietly eating her lunch while everyone talked around her. When she was finished eating, she just slipped away, hoping to find a quiet corner. She ran into something hard when she rounded the corner. "I'm sorry," She immediately apologized. She looked up into the dark eyes of someone she hadn't met or seen before yet. He was dressed classy, his suit was rather mystical, dark, with silver swirls or etchings in it, and a solid black tie. His hair was mohawked on top, tipped in bright green, and he wore charcoal around his eyes, and he was of Asian descent.
"It's quite alright. You're a new student." He spoke, his voice had a different drawl to it. A mixture of accents that Bella couldn't quite place.
"I am. Bella Cullen."
"Magnus Bane. Theater professor extraordinaire." He introduced, a cat-like smirk appearing on his face.
Bella blinked a few times. "Oh, The Magnus Bane. You're a warlock."
"I am. You've heard of me?"
"Yes, my father has spoke about you previously." Bella admitted.
Magnus' lips continued to curl. "You're Carlisle's daughter, that's interesting. He has three, correct?"
"Yes, my little sisters. Mary Alice and Clarissa." Bella supplied with a nod.
"Well then. I hope to see your name on the sign-up sheet for the play."
"Oh no, that's not really my thing. Thank you though." Bella said and then stepped around him.
Magnus looked back. "Tell your father I said hello." He said and watched her nod and duck around another corner, out of sight. He smiled. She was intriguing to him. The oldest of the Cullen Coven, was certainly beautiful.
After the final bell, Bella walked out towards her Land rover to wait for her sisters, and stepped off onto the parking lot, and the iciness made her slide. She flailed her arms around to try and balance herself, but that didn't work too well, and down she went. Her butt hit the ground, and the pain radiated up her back. She groaned, her hands now cold from the wetness of the pavement, and now she was going to have a bruise on her bum.
"Hello." A shy voice called to her.
Bella glanced up to see the vampire boy from this morning staring down at her. "Oh, hello again." She murmured.
He reached down, helping her to her feet, he dusted her off a little. "The ice around here is a bit tricky." He said in a light tone.
"Yeah, before coming here, we were in Texas." Bella muttered.
"I see. I'm Edward. Edward Masen." He introduced.
"Bella Cullen." She introduced back. "Thank you again. I think I need a bubble suit. I'm the least graceful thing here at this school."
Edward smiled a tight smile. "I don't believe so. It was nice meeting you Bella. Be careful." He said and then he was gone, nearly vanishing before her eyes. She sighed and started walking back towards her Land Rover, carefully, but it was Bella, and she found herself sliding forward towards the door of her SUV, and she hit it with a thump.
"Ugh." She whined a little.
"You'll get used to it." An accented voice called over to her. She turned and looked. She saw the boy from homeroom, his bright blonde hair slick back, and his golden eyes were staring at her curiously. "Jace." He said with a nod.
"Bella. Yeah, I don't know. I don't like the cold." She muttered.
Jace smiled, chuckling slightly as he walked over. When he did, the icy mess around his feet melted more.
"You're a warlock?"
"I am." Jace said with a smile. "And you're a witch. Are you from London as well?"
"My parents are. We were born here."
"Year?"
"Uh, 2003."
Jace nodded. "You're a new witch then. There are more of you?"
"Yes, my sisters. Mary Alice, and Clarissa."
Jace smiled at her. "Well, Bella, I'll be happy to meet you."
"Thanks, I don't really make friends a lot. I suppose I should." Bella tried a smile.
"Friends. Sounds nice. Friendly enough to go with me to the winter formal?"
"Oh, I don't dance." Bella said, frowning.
Jace shrugged. "I'm not much of a dancer either. Could be fun though, yes?"
Bella bit her lip a little. "Maybe. I don't know. Today's my first day and…I just don't know If I'll have time to get everything together by then. I don't want to leave you hanging. I'm sure there are a ton of other girls that would love to go."
Jace nodded. "Perhaps. You're intriguing Bella."
"You don't know me though. How could I be interesting?"
"I can see it in your eyes." Jace said, and then looked up as two others joined.
"Bella! This school is amazing!" Alice gushed.
"There are so many nice people in our class!" Clarissa said with excitement.
Bella smiled. "That's good."
Alice turned and looked at Jace. "Oh, hello. I'm Alice."
"I'm Clarissa." Clarissa introduced.
"Jace Herondale." Jace said, introducing himself. "Bella, let me know." He said with a smile and then he walked away.
Alice looked at Bella, eyes wide. "He is gorgeous." She murmured.
Bella watched Jace walk away. "Really?"
Clarissa's mouth fell open. "Are you serious?"
"I don't think I really noticed too much. Come on, let's get home." Bella said, and opened her door and sat down.
[The Next Day]
Bella was not as excited as her sisters about the school, and her parents knew. Her mom came to talk to her last night, just to alleviate things.
"Darling, just try. I know how you feel about all of this, but you cannot run from who you are. Bella, you are a powerful witch. The more you fight it, the harder it is on you. Please don't take who you are for granted."
"Mom, I'm just not that coordinated. I'm not that strong. I can barely make the lights go off, or start a flame with my hand. Alice and Clarissa are far stronger."
"Because they embrace who they are. Bella, I worry about you." Jocelyn caressed Bella's cheek. "Promise me, you'll give this a shot. Make friends, grow, explore who you are. Just take these five months to try, after that, if you still feel like you don't believe, I'll let it go."
Bella promised that she would try at least. So, she would sign up for the theater thing. She could work backstage with props or something, just to make her mom happy. She hated being a disappointment, and she could tell that her parents were disappointed in her, so she would try. Five months would go by fast.
She looked at the signup sheet and sighed, putting her name on it under the backstage and props section. She blew out a breath and turned around, and she ran into the hard chest of Jace Herondale. "Oh, I'm sorry."
"My fault, I thought you heard me walk up behind you." Jace said with a smile.
"Nope, I'm pretty oblivious to a lot of everything." Bella admitted.
Magnus walked up just then, holding a mug with coffee in it, Bella assumed. "Ah, you did sign up after all." He said, his cat-like grin on his face.
"I did." Bella said with a nod.
Jace smiled, leaning over, his body brushing against hers slightly, and penciling his name under hers.
"Really?" Bella asked, raising a brow.
"Why not, seems like it could be fun. Right Magnus?" Jace said with a wink.
Magnus smiled at Jace. "Having a Herondale on the production team for the play could be interesting. I'll see you two at rehearsal tomorrow, right?"
Bella nodded, and watched Magnus walk away. She sighed. "Well, that was on my list of things to do today."
"What was your other?" Jace asked, leaning against the wall, and looking at her.
"I promised my mom that I would try to make friends, and not be a recluse."
"What's wrong with being a recluse?" Jace asked.
Bella gave him a little smile. She admitted that Jace was funny, and would be a good first friend. "Well I have English and Lit next so, unfortunately, I don't have time to explain it all."
"Ah, I see. Perhaps, we can talk about it more after school, maybe grab some coffee at the little coffee slash book shop?"
"Well, I have to drive my sister's home." Bella started her excuse. "But I could meet you there afterwards."
Jace smiled. "Okay. Sounds like a plan. Make sure you let your mom know you're not being a recluse."
"Thanks," She said and wandered off to her class.
After school, Bella bravely took to the parking lot, and managed to get to her Land Rover without busting her butt. Alice and Clarissa rushed up a moment later.
"Bella! We're going with a new friend to go do some shopping, we already told mom and dad." Alice said, excitingly.
"Oh, who's the new friend?"
"Jessica, she's in our homeroom. We were talking about how we haven't gotten a chance to go shopping around here yet, and she said that we could go with her after school to hit a couple spots." Alice explained.
Bella nodded. "Well okay then. Have fun I suppose."
Jace walked up just then. "Ladies." He smiled.
"Ah, we can go get coffee now afterall, that is if you didn't plan something before." Bella said when he walked up.
"Nothing planned. Follow me there?" Jace motioned to his care. It was a Mercedes, and was solid black, even the windows were tinted. "Or, you could ride with me, and we could swing back by the parking lot and drop you back off at your Suv." He offered.
Bella nodded. "That's fine." She looked at her sisters. "Please don't crazy shopping a ton. Is Jessica dropping you back off at home?"
"Yessss." Clarissa said with a smile, and then looped her arm with Alice's. "We'll see you at home! Have fun!" She said before they rushed off. Somehow not slipping or sliding like Bella had issues with.
Bella looked at Jace. "Thank you for driving. I don't know the area well enough yet."
"No worries at all." Jace said and walked beside her towards his car. She slid a couple times, and his hand went to her waist. "Easy." He said with a smile. "You really don't like the ice and snow, do you?"
"I'm afraid not," Bella said with a slight smile of admission. They got to his car safely, and he opened the door for her. "Thank you." She said before she dipped down in his car.
He skated around the front of the car and got in. "I'm glad you agreed to coffee with me. I wasn't sure you would." He admitted as he drove away from the school.
"Hmm, well, I'm trying here. So, you can't make fun of me or anything because I'm not a very good conversationalist."
"I won't tease you too much," Jace said with a wide grin.
They arrived at the coffee shop a little while later, it was close to the school, so Bella made mental notes, so she could remember how to get here later. They went inside and sat down at a table together.
"So, have you ever been to London?" Jace asked, as a girl brought over their coffees.
"Yes, I have, three times. My grandmother lives in London." Bella explained.
"Ah, Cullens…let's see, the family predates the witch trials here in America." Jace supplied.
"Yes, my father was a boy when the trials began, and ended. He fled Salem with my grandmother. They moved around a lot, until they returned to London in 1716. He met my mother in 1826, and then they returned to America in 1920." Bella recalled the stories.
Jace nodded. "Intriguing. Any other siblings, or are you the oldest?"
"I'm the oldest. I know they waited so late in life to have children it seems. I always get that look when I say, yes I really am eighteen." Bella said before taking a drink of her coffee. "How about you, Jace Herondale."
"Hmm, I'm an only child. I was born in 1824 in London. My father decided to curse me, so now I am eternally eighteen it seems. I bounce around from time to time, but landed in Forks, three years ago. You'll find that Forks High school is full of people that look like teens, but a lot of us have been in our teens for a long time. Besides the wolf pack, and a few fae and the occasional witch, we just enjoy our youth a bit longer." Jace explained.
Bella frowned. "Why did your father curse you?"
"He's not a great guy. I don't talk about him too often. I tend to stay away from him. He still lives in London, as far as I know."
"I'm sorry. So you can never age? Like vampires."
"So you do know about the supernatural afterall." Jace said with a smile.
"I mean, I know enough." Bella said. "I know that Warlocks and Witches do age, albeit slowly, and magic helps keep youthful appearances, but eternal life is never in the cards for us."
Jace smiled. "I will die eventually. One day, it'll just happen. I don't know how long I actually have on Earth. It's part of that curse."
"And you can't break it?"
Jace laughed a little. "I've tried for a couple centuries. It's not easy. My father is very powerful."
"What about other Warlocks? Can any of them help?"
"Takes a lot of power to break a curse. You'll eventually figure that out. I've come to the conclusion that I can't break the curse because someone not a Herondale has to. I don't know the entirety of the curse, which makes it that much harder." Jace explained.
Bella didn't like that. "Witches can break curses."
"I know."
"So why don't you ask my dad?"
"I wouldn't ask your father…he may be powerful but-"
"What if I try? I mean, I may suck as a witch right now, but I can learn how."
"Takes a lot of power Bella, you're so new and…"
Bella saw what he was saying. "Oh."
Jace reached a hand out, laying it over hers and smiled. "Thank you for being a good person. There aren't a lot of good ones left around anymore."
"I want to help you though. Let me at least study it. Graduation is five months from now."
"Why would you want to help me. You don't know me."
"You're the first friend I have made." Bella smiled.
Jace smiled. "Hmm. Well, I might consider it if you went to winter formal with me."
Bella smiled. "You're slick. Did you know that?"
Jace shrugged. "I might have known that."
"Fine, I'll go to the winter formal. Alice has already forced me into it anyways, I might as well not go dateless."
"Wonderful." Jace said, staring at her. Bella was beautiful, more beautiful than what he remembered. It was odd that Carlisle had his daughter's memories wiped every so often. He wondered if it was because of what they were.
