Scotty was working away on building some form of communicator by the light which flickered from the fire, the rain was still hammering down outside the cave entrance. Scotty would occasionally glance up from his work and turn his head over at McCoy to check if he was still sleeping peacefully. But the main reason was to check he was alright, Scotty was used to being accidentally beamed to strange places but McCoy wasn't. Not only that, he had not long ago escaped a pit of quicksand which wasn't exactly ideal. Just then Scotty heard McCoy mutter something as he rolled over, but thankfully he didn't wake up, instead he settled back down. Scotty was just about to return to his work when he watched the shirt he had given McCoy to use as a miniature blanket slip off the Doctor's still body, causing him to instantly shiver from the cold.
With a small smile appearing across his face, Scotty placed down the mess of parts he had been fiddling with, before standing up and walking silently over to McCoy. Scotty picked up the shirt and gently laid it back over the slumbering Doctor, who grabbed a tight hold of one of the sleeves. "He's so cute when he's asleep." Scotty said to himself. "Thanks Monty." McCoy muttered quietly, Scotty felt his cheeks slightly blush as he watched McCoy once again shuffle around to get more comfortable. It was extremely rare for the Doctor to call him Monty. "Sleep well Leonard." Scotty said as he quietly wandered back over to his work, well more like the mess which he had been trying to make work.
An hour past by and Scotty was slowly starting to create something which resembled some sort of communicator, but he still had a long way to go. Scotty knew that Kirk was most likely searching for them, so his own life and McCoy's didn't rely simply on a device he had just thrown together. Just as Scotty was tightening up a screw with the screwdriver which he had been carrying on his belt when he slipped, causing the screwdriver to stab straight into his thigh. Scotty screeched out in pain as he dropped his device, which thankfully didn't break. He pressed his hand against his thigh, tears forming in his eyes, a string of Gaelic swear words flooded out of his mouth. Scotty's destressed screeching woke McCoy up from his slumber, he span round to see his friend in pain so he sprinted over to him, dragging his red blanket with him. "What happened?" "Bloody slipped with my screwdriver in my dam hand!"
Scotty muttered through gritted teeth, his leg felt like it was on fire. McCoy quickly examined Scotty's injury, "I don't think it's hit any major blood vessels, but I am going to have to pull it out." Scotty's eyes widened which allowed for several tears to drip down his cheek. "Wait what? Do you have to?" The Scotsman stuttered. McCoy placed a hand on Scotty's arm, "I've got to, I need to wrap it up to stop it from bleeding and to prevent it from getting infected." McCoy's voice was calm and reassuring, Scotty took a second to think about what the Doctor just said before nodding slowly. McCoy smiled as he gripped a tight hold of the handle of the tool, which was impaled in the Engineers leg, he then felt something grab a hold of his other wrist. McCoy looked over to see that Scotty was clutching it tightly in one of his hands, McCoy felt his cheeks get slightly flushed as he felt the Scotsman's hand on his wrist. It was clear Scotty was already in a great deal of pain and this was going to cause even more.
"This is going to hurt like hell isn't it?" Scotty whimpered, "Do you want the answer which will make you feel better or the truth?" McCoy replied with a soft smile. "The truth would be nice…" "Yes this is going to hurt like hell, but I've got to do it. Alright? You can squeeze my wrist if that will help." Scotty slowly nodded as he tightened his grip of McCoy's wrist, "OK. One, two…" Scotty was expecting McCoy to go on three, but he didn't. On two McCoy yanked the tool out from the Scotsman's leg, causing Scotty to scream at the top of his lungs all while he gripped McCoy's wrist tightly. "Bloody hell!" Scotty muttered as he felt tears stream down his face, that really did hurt. McCoy felt terrible for causing his friend pain, but he had to do it. McCoy took one of Scotty's hands and placed it over the hole which was in the Engineers thigh, "Put pressure on it while I make a bandage, but please don't look at it. You fainting isn't what I want happening." Scotty once again just nodded as he pressed his hand hard against his thigh, while he kept his head turned away.
He could hear cloth ripping next to him, then he felt something touch his hand. "You can move your hand now Scotty." McCoy said softly, Scotty slowly moved his hand away to feel something wrap tightly around his thigh. "You can look now if you want, you can't see any blood. Just don't look at your hand." Scotty slowly turned his head to see that McCoy had used the shirt he had given him to keep him warm as a makeshift bandage, "It's going to sting for a while, but you'll live." Scotty smiled. "Thanks Leonard." "Any time Scotty." McCoy then stood up and walked over to the mouth of the cave and held his hands under the rain, to wash away the blood. He then cupped his hands to collect some of the water before walking back over to Scotty, "Give me your hands." Slightly confused Scotty moved his hands over to McCoy, who poured the water over them which in turn washed away the blood. "At least now there's no chance of you fainting because you looked at ya own blood." Scotty couldn't help but chuckle at the Doctors remark, but he also felt his cheeks start to blush, why he didn't know. Maybe he was starting to enjoy being stranded on this planet with McCoy.
