Jace dropped Bella off at her Land Rover. "I'll see you tomorrow." He smiled at her, before winking at her and walking away.
Bella smiled, watching him drive off. Jace was a character, she thought. He was a good person despite having the father he did. She was fortunate to have a wonderful father and mother. She turned to open her door, but something caught her eye. She frowned, walking towards the bushes. She slipped a couple times, but she caught herself before she could fall. When she got to the bushes, she gasped, fully seeing what it was she was looking at. It was the body of a girl, her eyes wide open and frozen. Her lips were blue, and her skin had a ghastly color. The girl was in one of her classes. She didn't realize that she had screamed when Magnus was suddenly by her side.
"Shhh. Calm down," Magnus voice was soothing. "Don't look at her." He murmured, and his arms captured her, and she buried her face in his chest. "Come…" he said and tried guiding her away from the sight, but her legs shook and buckled under her. He caught her and just swung her up into his arms and carried her towards the school. Once inside he set her down in a chair inside the theater room. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed. "Charlie, there's another dead witch." He said quickly and then was silent. "Okay. Thank you." He said and hung up. He crouched down in front of Bella. "Hey…look at me." He said gently.
Bella looked at Magnus, and suddenly she got a couple flashes of something that confused her. Did she know him from before? Why did her head hurt? "Um…she's a witch?"
"Yes."
"You said another dead witch." Bella said, her voice wavered.
"Yes, there…were three other girls. It's been a while, over a year. We thought…that they moved on. We didn't know that they were back." Magnus said softly. "Did you see anything? You're here late. Everyone else has gone home except for Clove the sanitarian, me, and Principal Aldertree."
Bella swallowed. "I rode with Jace Herondale to get coffee, and then he just dropped me off at my SUV. I saw a shoe in the bushes, so I…I walked over and….and…"
"Shhh. Okay. Let's get you home. Charlie is the police around here; he'll handle it okay?" Magnus soothed her.
Bella nodded, her legs shaking even more. "I don't…I don't know if I can drive."
"That's alright. I'll drive you." Magnus helped her up, carrying her in his arms to her SUV, looking up at Charlie has he pulled in. "Over there. I'm taking her home. Bella Cullen. You know where to find me." He said and Charlie gave a short nod, before Magnus got into the driver's seat, and started it up. "Address in the GPS?" He asked and Bella nodded silently.
Magnus pulled up at the Cullen's house, and helped Bella out. She was able to walk now, but still felt weak. She opened the door, and Jocelyn came to her immediately. "Sheriff Swan called me, said Magnus was bringing you home." Her arms enveloped her.
Bella sighed, closing her eyes. "I'm sorry."
"Why are you sorry?" Jocelyn asked softly.
"Because you worried. I'm sorry."
Magnus smiled. "Jocelyn, it's a pleasure to see you."
"Magnus thank you for bringing her home. Come in, have some tea." Jocelyn said, and Magnus stepped in, closing the door behind him.
"Are Clarissa and Alice still not home?" Bella asked.
"No, they're still shopping, I just spoke to them, told them what happened, and they said they were checking out now, and will be home shortly." Jocelyn explained, and started towards the kitchen.
Bella sat down on the couch in the front room, and Magnus came to sit next to her. She felt odd, but she knew that it had to be because of trauma.
Jocelyn returned with tea, handing Bella and Magnus tea. "I'm sorry honey, that you had to see that."
Bella nodded and lifted the tea to her lips and she sipped it, the refreshing taste kissing her tongue, and then she drunk the rest of it down. She felt her eyes droop closed and then she was out.
"How is this happening again?" Jocelyn asked. "I thought coming here would be safe."
"I'm not sure. The wards are in place. He shouldn't have been able to get in. She was with Jace Herondale before. They went and got coffee and returned to the school."
"Dear goddess," Jocelyn blew out a breath. "He knows how dangerous it can be, with his father still searching for him, and he's hanging around Bella." She brushed a hand through her hair.
"It's okay. Jocelyn, Bella will be fine. She's a strong witch. You don't have to do this."
"I have to. She can't remember what happened today." Jocelyn whispered. She looked at Bella's face. "She's not ready."
Magnus sighed. "She's cursed Jocelyn, and she's certainly not a child anymore. She's 300 years old. Let her be the witch she's supposed to be."
Jocelyn had told Carlisle that once before. But he was afraid of what could happen. He was protecting her. She was marked, and he couldn't fix that. The curse wasn't a curse that was easily lifted. It's why her magic was dampened. If they didn't suppress it like they did, then she would be a beacon, and he would return to try and take her. "I have to do this. We have to find him, make sure that she's not in danger anymore. Go find the weak point, fix it."
Magnus nodded, his eyes solemn. "Okay. Just know that Bella is stronger than you think." He said before he left, leaving Jocelyn there with Bella.
[The Next day]
Bella woke, stretching in her bed, and looked at the clock. She was up earlier than normal. She got up, dressed, and brushed through her hair, brushed her teeth, and went downstairs. Her mom sat breakfast down on the table. "Morning."
Jocelyn smiled. "Hey sweetie. Alice drove on to school with Clarissa, something about cheerleading tryouts. They took the extra car."
"Ah, got it. Oh, I signed up to be apart of the play. I'm really trying, like you said." Bella said with a smile.
"That's good honey." Jocelyn smiled. "Hurry and eat your English muffin and get to school then. I have an exhibit to plan for. Your dad got called in to the hospital super early this morning."
Bella nodded, sitting down and eating the muffin. "Mmm. Good luck with the exhibit." She said and then grabbed the togo coffee her mom fixed her and out the door she went. She pulled up at the school right at seven and got out. She slid slightly, grumbling. "Stupid ice." She muttered and walked carefully towards the sidewalk, stepping up, and slipping, losing her balance, and falling hard against someone behind her.
"I've got you," Magnus' voice sounded from behind her, his breath tickled her neck, and it sent a little thrill through her, which confused her.
"Uh, sorry. I really don't like ice and snow." She complained.
Magnus smiled. "Well, winter last until April pretty much. The snow and ice will go away by March though."
"By then I'll be used to it, only for it to go away, pity." Bella joked. "Thanks for catching me."
Magnus nodded. He could tell that the memory wipe had happened, and he wondered just how far Jocelyn and Carlisle took it this time. "So, are you ready for after school?"
"Yes, I signed up, I committed, I will be there. I have to put forward the effort so I don't disappoint my parents." She said with a sad smile.
"Well, I'll see you then. He careful of the ice now." Magnus said, and walked inside the school.
Bella smiled after him. Magnus was a great guy, she seemed to zone out momentarily, because Jace was waving a hand in front of her face. "Hmm?"
"Okay, you are here in the land of the living. You were zoned out pretty hard. Everything okay?" Jace asked.
"Yeah, just not a morning person," Bella said with a smile and started walking into the school, Jace falling into step beside her.
"So what color dress are you planning on wearing Friday, so I can coordinate." Jace asked.
Bella blinked a few times. Had she agreed to go with him and just forgot? She knew she woke up, feeling a little foggy. "Uh, not sure. Blue probably." She supplied.
Jace frowned. "What's wrong?"
"I just…" Bella had felt like this before. "Today is Wednesday, right? Because we have the play rehearsal. My phone says Wednesday, but oddly…I don't recall…." She drifted off and closed her eyes.
It dawned on Jace that she had a memory wipe done yesterday. What had happened yesterday to make Carlisle or Jocelyn do that? "Yes, today is Wednesday, and you still haven't given me your answer to Winter formal, so I'll take your dress color as a yes." He said with a smile.
"Oh," Bella thought maybe she was going crazy. "Well, I suppose since I'm going to be going anyways, why not." She said with a smile.
Jace smiled. "Right. Why not?" He said and they disappeared into the school and headed to homeroom.
After school, Bella went to the gym where they were setting up the stage for the play. Props were needing to be painted, and finished, and costumes were being done. There was lighting, and other random things that needed to be done, and they had until December 24th, to get it down, which was three weeks. Not a lot of time, but hey, they were all supernatural here, so they should be able to complete it in time.
Bella settled in, painting the scene on one of the canvases, she was really good with paint, and art in general, like her mother. It was one of the things they had in common. Bella enjoyed it, and she found it relaxing, so painting the backdrop would be sort of like therapy for her.
Magnus was doing the auditions for the main roles right now, and right now she was having to listen to Rosalie Hale sing a ballad. Her voice was very beautiful, Bella thought. Before long, Bella tuned it all out.
"Missed a spot," Jace said, coming up behind her.
"What? Where?" Bella asked.
Jace leaned forward, his body brushing hers and took the brush from her and reached up higher. "Right here." He said with a grin.
Bella smiled, stepping from out in front of him. "Well, I'm shorter than you, so." She pointed out.
"You have a lovely voice." Jace mentioned.
"Hmm?"
"You were singing, softly to yourself." Jace said, finishing up that one spot before replacing the brush.
Bella blushed. She rarely sung in front of people, and she was so zoned in on painting that she hadn't realized she was singing. "I…thank you."
"You should audition." Jace mentioned.
"Oh no. I'm not the stage kind of person. I have terrible stage fright. When I was in fourth grade, I froze during a presentation in front of the whole school, and basically barfed." Bella said, scrunching up her nose.
Jace smiled. "Got it. Well, practice makes perfect. I'm sure, with practice, you could stand up on stage. There's nothing to be embarrassed about. Just be yourself." He finished with a shrug.
"I don't know. That may be you, since you're like what, the golden boy here at school. Jace Herondale, quarterback, straight A's, and let's see, all the girls say you're gorgeous. Am I leaving anything out?" Bella asked, raising a brow.
"I'm a Herondale." Jace said with a nod.
"Right. Stuff like that is natural for you. I'm not that type of person. My sisters are the charismatic ones. I'm just Bella."
Jace shook his head. "You're more than just Bella. You'll see, one day." His phone vibrated, and he took it out of his pocket. "Ah, I've got to take this." He said and walked away.
Bella sighed, and looked up at the backdrop. She admired it for a while until Magnus wandered over. "Oh, what do you think?"
"It looks amazing. You have done such a great job." Magnus said with a nod.
Bella turned her head and looked over at Magnus. She got some sort of flash in her head, and it made her head hurt. She frowned a little, and then rubbed her temple.
"Something wrong?" Magnus asked, studying her.
"No, just a headache," She waved a hand. "I'm fine. So, tomorrow I want to finish the rest of the backdrop, this is just this section."
"Okay. Well, it's getting late, so you should leave for the night."
"Right, yeah, it's already seven, wow," Bella said, pulling her phone out.
Magnus smiled. "You were so focused."
"I guess I was."
Jace walked in. "Sorry," he said, looking at the time. "Ah, did you want to go get some dinner?"
Bella started to agree, but she stopped herself. "No, I should get home. Take a shower, and what not. I'll see you tomorrow yes?"
Jace nodded. "Okay, I'll walk you to your car then." He said and looked at Magnus. "I have the lighting program situated, shouldn't be too hard to set the timers, and make it more automatic, since we have less stage hands."
"Thank you Jace, impressive as always," Magnus said with a smile. "I'll see you both tomorrow. Have a good night." He said, dismissing them.
Jace walked with Bella to her car. "So, you're an artist."
"I am. Sort of. My mother is really the artist, I'm not as talented as she is, but I do enjoy painting. It relaxes me." She said and stopped right at her Land Rover. She looked around. It was dark in the parking lot, and it gave her an eerie feeling.
"What?" Jace said, looking around.
Bella frowned. "Do you ever just get the feeling that someone is watching you?"
"No, not really."
"I just…" She sighed. "I don't know."
"Is someone following you?" Jace asked.
Bella shook her head. "No, I'm just paranoid. I don't really care for the darkness."
Jace smiled then, took his hand out of his pocket, and reached up, and tucked a strand of her loose hair behind her ear. "I wouldn't let anything harm you." He said and then he opened her door for her. "Go on home. Get some rest. I'll see you tomorrow," He said smoothly.
Bella smiled and nodded. She shut her door, and then left, going back home.
Magnus appeared next to Jace in an instant, the purple mist dissipating. "Jocelyn knows you're hanging around Bella."
"And?"
"With your father being who he is, you really thing it's safe for you to get near a Witch of the Eclipse?"
Jace sighed. "Magnus, I'm not planning on anything."
"You shouldn't. He's back." Magnus said.
Jace frowned and looked at him. "When did this happen?"
"Yesterday. Bella found the body of Angela Weber. A girl from her class. She was a witch, and he, killed her. She's marked, and you know how difficult this makes everything."
"I wouldn't let harm befall her Magnus; you know me."
"Yes. I've known you for nearly three centuries. I know how you are with women, number one, and number two; I know that you're cursed, and no other warlock wants to touch a curse that Stephen Herondale did. That is why you will never find love. You understand that, right?" Magnus asked.
Jace sighed. "You don't have to remind me. I understand. I'm doomed to this life. I would never let a girl fall in love with me."
"Why are your befriending, Bella?" Magnus asked.
"I'm looking out for her. She's been through a lot the past three hundred years."
Magnus nodded. "She's only been through what she's been through because of him. If you get involved, not only will you have the curse of your father, but you'll have to endure the mark of him."
"I'm not afraid of him."
"You should be." Magnus said, his eyes serious. "He's dangerous, and much older than us all. You don't think that he won't try to make your life harder? He's killed within the wards. I've placed more wards, with the help of all the strongest warlocks I know. We're lucky we have Ragnor. He's the only one older than him, and the only one whose wards have been deterring him. We have to keep Bella safe, at all cost, and that means, you can't be in a relationship with her."
"I wasn't planning on it." Jace retorted.
Magnus smiled. "Oh Jace….I know you better than you know yourself sometimes. Bella is a beautiful woman. She's smart, and despite her memory blocks, she is charismatic and funny. She's a triple threat, and I know you. I know how you are about beautiful women. You're taking her to the winter formal. That will be the end of your courtship. Trust me, only Jocelyn knows of your involvement with Bella, if Carlisle finds out…he won't be so kind. He wants the best for his daughters- "
"Is that why he keeps erasing their memories?" Jace put out. "Every twenty-five years, like clockwork he erases their memories. I've stayed away for the last hundred and seventy years because I didn't want to keep watching it."
"No, you stayed away because Carlisle threatened to turn you into your father. Meddling around with his youngest daughter almost two hundred years ago almost got you killed." Magnus reminded him.
Jace looked away. "That wasn't anything serious. Clarissa knows her mind."
"Carlisle is protective of his daughters for a reason, and you are privy to that reason. Don't, fuck it up. Now go home, I've grown tired of babbling with you." Magnus said, and then he disappeared into a fog.
Jace cursed, looking up at the night sky. He knew what Magnus was saying, he knew that he couldn't do anything about it. He should have never approached her to begin with, but he couldn't believe his eyes, when he saw all three of the Cullen sisters here in Forks. It was a haven for the supernatural, so it was bound to happen, but Jace honestly thought that Carlisle would never, move so close to him ever again. Not since what happened last time. He wanted to blame it on just being young and naïve, but he was neither of those things. He grew frustrated with himself, so he resigned for the night, getting in his car, and driving off into the darkness.
